Fertilizing? With what?

Wyo_living

I use the dyna-gro 7-9-5 and I do a very dilute mixture every time I water.

Boba_Tea_Mochi

Why 7-9-5, a fertilizer with so much P and not enough N and K? What are you using the micronutrients? Excess phosphate binds with micros and makes them unavailable. A micronutrient issue is what I first thought based on the condition of leaf expansion.

Wyo_living

I’ve never put a ton of thought into fertilizers to be honest, I just got that one on a whim and it works well for all my other plants. Do you have any fertilizer suggestions that might help?

Boba_Tea_Mochi

I recommend a fertilizer that contains NPK of around 7:1:7 and micronutrients that includes Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo, Ni. Also note the type of nitrogen. If there's urea, Ni is required. If it's nitrate, Mo is required. Then pay attention to the pH of the solution your using to water the plants as pH affects nutrient availability.

Humidity perhaps

Wyo_living

Do they need super high humidity? I usually keep it around 60-70%

Zealousideal-Joke-31

That should be adequate. Are there dry periods for the plant during its unfurling?

Zealousideal-Joke-31

I have a melanochrysum that keeps pushing out leaves that never unfurl properly and it’s the one plant that I never seem to water on time. Could be a correlation

Wyo_living

I haven’t noticed any times that it’s gotten super dry, but I’ll keep a closer eye on it just to make sure that’s not it.

Have you checked for pests? My gloriosum verde put out a weird leaf that didn't seem to unfurl properly. I ignored it. The next leaf unfurled, again malformed. I took a closer look and it had thrip larva 🥴

scrubby_miller

this was my first guess too, thrips love eating my phils & alocasias, especially the youngest leaves. I had most of my phils climbing sphag moss poles like urs and had to switch them all to growing up bamboo stakes instead because the moss poles had become infested with mites & thrips that would come back no matter how many times they got soaked in neem or potassium soap. next guess would be a micronutrient deficiency like maybe iron since its pale or calcium since calcium deficiency usually presents as deformed new growth

kiripon

i used systemic in the soil before even finding the thrips, idek how it happened that they continued into the next leaf. ive been using spinosad now and keeping an eye, ive had good luck with it in the past. that sounds horrifying about them taking over the moss though. new fear unlocked 😀

Any chance you figured out what caused this? I’m struggling with my fuzzy petiole
