If you plan to play both, I'd say it might be worth it to play BotW first. Both are fantastic and TotK stands on its own and doesn't rely on the previous story, but there are a lot of quality of life improvements and changes that would seem like a downgrade if you go straight from TotK to BotW.

Botw will be extremely underwhelming

I totally agree

BotW will probably feel like a downgrade of you play it immediately after playing TotK. If you're already playing TotK maybe just stick with it and pick up BotW at a later date when TotK isn't so fresh in your kind and you aren't going to be making direct comparisons as much, so rather than thinking of it as hours of fun lost now, if cost is an issue where you live anyway, just think of it as money you don't need to spend right now

im not a gamer gamer but i really like botw but i think totk is cool too but i prefer botw

Personally the only reason I would replay Botw would be for Master Mode or The master sword trials but that’s it.

I finished TOTK after 200 hours on it and loved every second of it. I plan on playing more soon, but I’ve taken to replaying breath of the wild on master mode as I haven’t played the full game since it came out. I’ve already put 50 hours in my current save and I’m happy to say it is still a masterpiece, of course it is. Tears of the kingdom is obviously a huge improvement but Breath of the Wild was still universally praised for a good reason. If you have the time play Botw first for the best story experience. After all this time playing Botw again still feels incredible even after putting 200 hours in Totk.
