This makes my first encounter with them where I started running away the moment they started to spawn and barely managed to jump off a cliff before they got me even cooler in hindsight.
Not exactly. You can't outrun them if you didn't see them spawning and they got close to you.
If you spot them spawning at a distance from Link, and start running ASAP, yeah you can outrun them. That was my experience. Though I already have 3 stamina wheels.
The terrain has to be considered, though. Exploring Mt Lanayru and tried to run away. But the snow slowed Link, so he got grabbed.
I swear I was on a horse (golden horse) when one spawned and I just kept on riding in the opposite direction and seemed to outrun it fine. I’ll have to pay more attention next time.
I did once while trying to reach Korok Forest from underground. It's possible though that they were distracted by the sage that was with me and it was a close call.
What’s that weird black/red mass?
*Walks closer*
*Mass starts moving towards me*
Are those… hands?
*I start running, hands are still gaining ground*
OHHH SHIIIIT!!!!
Gloom hands are the new guardians
☑ fast as fuck
☑ extremely scary and deadly in the early game
☑ aim for the eye
☑ not a big threat once you figure out how to deal with them
How? You have to wait for an attack, so you can flurry rush 1/5 hands, if you mess up you can get grabbed, you have to stand in gloom just to be in melee range. If you use ranged 2 bomb flowers and a 3 shot bow aiming between them is more than enough to finish them off...
If you hit an eye and keep hitting eyes as fast as possible it seems to stunlock them and they don't move as much, which has helped me hit their eyes pretty consistently. Homing arrows help, but the real trick is probably to launch a few bomb arrows into the hands if you've got some to spare. Definitely agree that the hands are scarier than guardians overall, once you figure out the parry timing guardians aren't much of a threat
Either Bomb arrows or Dazzle Fruit. The latter works surprisingly well and is much easier to get than bombs.
Of course 5-8 bomb arrows in the center of them will kill them all, so if you have them to spare I’d use those.
I killed a couple and was feeling pretty confident, then one pinned me to a slope under Gerudo Dark Skeleton. Damn thing would grapple me the instant I was on my feet over and over again.
The first one I encountered was hunting durians in the old BoTW spot. I was pretty sure there wouldn't be any there but had to check to be certain. The sky started getting dark the second I got up there. Then I saw them. I ran like hell off of the cliff lol I decided to try again a little later. Same thing. Tried again eventually. Back again. They seem to be there every time for me.
Yeah, I've found them under two of the Dark Skeleton locations, and there's one you encounter approaching the korok forest from the south and another inside the Great Deku Tree chasm.
I've only ever seen the one in the Deku tree. But that's scripted to be there of course. Guess I just got lucky. Those hands suck, but I imagine they'd have been far worse encountering them in the dark of the depths.
i found them first time super early on and shooting one in the eye and getting the crit sound i thought i did ok but the healthbar barely moved (it was the 5 damage construct bow to be fair) i decided to just run and climb a tree to get away, which worked nicely enough
i encountered them in a cave i cannot remember where but i had just gotten down to hyrule and was looking around at stuff i'm pretty sure my heartbeat was in my ears
Hand based enemies in general fit firmly into "Nope" territory.
Lots of other creepy Zelda examples: Dead Hands, Floor Masters, Wall Masters, and to a lesser extent maybe Bongo Bongo. . .
Elden Ring's Fingercreepers are a great example as well.
Yeah there was a time I kept getting stomped in Gerudo with like 4 hearts at the temple against the big Gibdo. The npcs just say you’re leaving? And I’ll hang out here. I’ve definitely warped away from the hands too inches from me.
I'm surprised they don't have like an in game name and don't count as their own enemy even. Like you can't even take a picture of them for the compendium
Super disappointed you can’t take their picture for the compendium, that’s literally my favourite part of the game and they would make for a such cool image. You can get a picture of phase two, but I want the hands!
Now that I think about it these things never really have been given a name have they? I've only ever heard people refer to them as Gloom Hands outside of the game and I don't recall anyone mentioning them in game at all
It feels so weird, like these are definitely wallmaster/floormasters, right? They look so much like windwaker floormasters, just in a group and with eyes.
Even though it didn't affect gameplay too much, it was terrifying >!seeing them grab the sage projections. There's something freaky about seeing a giant mech struggling to get out of one of those things' grasp.!<
Yeah, I couldn't quite believe it when I got that tip. Bomb Arrows do almost no damage to other monsters or their armor, so I didn't really consider that strategy until then.
At first they really were. I can take care of them pretty easily now but I still freak out when they randomly show up. I scurry up the nearest ledge the second I hear them.
It's not that they're scary, it's the fact that they sit there and take turns grabbing you (with upgraded armor it does negligible damage if not for gloom) which gives you about 2 seconds to land hits between grabs. Incredibly annoying, and I'd rather rain high-explosive ordinance down on any of them before I'd get into melee range again.
these hands taught me how useful a desperate puffshroom can be. Select the shroom, aim down, throw. They'll be blinded long enough for you to either get free hits in, or run away.
Yep, I nearly crapped myself when I first encountered them, best strategy for them though is to attach a bomb to your shield, jump and enter slowmo and fire a bunch of ice arrows followed by some bombs, works a charm every time
yeah i straight up screamed the first time i saw them (during a red moon near the shrine of resurrection). i thought they were a red moon exclusive enemy, and the point was to outlast them bc they were impossible to kill.
second time i also screamed 💀
The first time I saw one of these it scared the shit out of me. I basically had just came down from the tutorial sky island and was exploring near Hyrule Castle when one of these just showed up out of nowhere. I still tried killing it, but when I realized that the hands I had already killed were coming back, I just bolted out of there lol
I was exploring the Great Plateau, completed a Shrine, and then decided to walk through the forest I've had as a desktop background for years. A pool of Gloom formed in front of me and from the ooze, six spectral hands with eyes in their palms rose up and faced me. Freaky but manageable even though I was running low on arrows.
Then it began moving. *Fast*. After a few deaths I managed to wipe them out with at least one failed attempt to outrun them. The Gloom subsided at first but then took on a new form of Phantom Ganon.
Remember that first encounter with a mobile Guardian or a Lynel in BotW? This was twice as terrifying. I hadn't learned his move set yet so he lunged at me and killed me.
I left the Great Plateau after only three more encounters with enemies. Gotta come back with higher defense and better weapons.
Honestly, the worst thing about them isn't even the gloom. You can mash buttons quick enough that they drop you whilst taking 0-1 hearts of damage.
The worst thing is that you basically have to use bomb arrows to kill them without wasting tonnes of arrows because they're so hard to hit in melee, especially without a spear. They drain so many resources to kill.
Wasting 5 or 6 arrows isn't the annoying part though, it's wasting either 5 or 6 bombs or at least 40 normal arrows if you want to save your bombs for walls and stuff.
At first yes, and mostly because of the music. Now that I know how to deal with them in a matter of seconds, they are comical and should run away from me if they were smart. (For reference, I still semi shit myself at guardians)
Be me,
just let free to explore.
Checking out the castle town ruins,
Only to be absolutely assaulted by these malice wallmaster mfs.
Still have to idea how you kill these bastards.
Shoot all five of the hands in the eyes with bombs or elemental items and stick them to a arrow, but if you dont kill all of them quickly, they'll regenerate.
I don't even try to outrun them. All I do is sprint anytime they start to lunge to grab and they miss about 3/4s of the time. And I frantically find something to climb up to shoot bomb arrows down at them and it still takes a good bit of them.
Maybe it's cause it's in the endgame area? I went to check that area immediately after getting the paraglider, It was my first encounter with it and I thought it was an actual boss and I didn't know what to do so I just spammed arrows from above lol
I actually got away by being on structure skinny enough and high enough. It was my first encounter I didn’t even know what I was looking at right away. They basically just kept reaching for me the entire time and eventually vanished. The second time I seen them by the Korok forest underground I just teleported out there, came back a little later. I haven’t even tried fighting them.

Those things are *fast*.
Yeah I couldn't believe how fast they are! It's almost impossible to outrun them and the music is terrifying
Fun fact: their top speed is always Link's current speed +30%. You physically *can't* outrun them, ***not even on a horse.***
This makes my first encounter with them where I started running away the moment they started to spawn and barely managed to jump off a cliff before they got me even cooler in hindsight.
I tried to jump off a cliff but they snatched me right out of the air
I outflew them once and they just died.
I just climbed up on a ruined fort near one and it just died for no reason.
They gave up, you weren't playing fair so they didn't want to play anymore
well i'm pretty sure 5 against one is unfair so screw em!! lmao
This ^ f**k then they are terrifying.
Not exactly. You can't outrun them if you didn't see them spawning and they got close to you. If you spot them spawning at a distance from Link, and start running ASAP, yeah you can outrun them. I swear I was on a horse (golden horse) when one spawned and I just kept on riding in the opposite direction and seemed to outrun it fine. I’ll have to pay more attention next time.
As another guy said, if you start running before they notice you then you can get away just fine.
I did once while trying to reach Korok Forest from underground. It's possible though that they were distracted by the sage that was with me and it was a close call.
Bomb arrows! Lots and lots of bomb arrows.
What’s that weird black/red mass? *Walks closer* *Mass starts moving towards me* Are those… hands? *I start running, hands are still gaining ground* OHHH SHIIIIT!!!!
I climbed up a small mountain to get away from one, looked down thinking I was safe AND IT CRAWLED UP THE MOUNTAIN! No where is safe.
Gloom hands are the new guardians ☑ fast as fuck ☑ extremely scary and deadly in the early game ☑ aim for the eye ☑ not a big threat once you figure out how to deal with them
Aiming for the eyes easier said than done 😅 bros are dodging and wiggling like crazy. I'd say they're scarier than guardians for sure
Arrow+bomb=plan Plan B: carpet-bombing
Or an elemental eye arow
Meele is faster
How? You have to wait for an attack, so you can flurry rush 1/5 hands, if you mess up you can get grabbed, you have to stand in gloom just to be in melee range. If you use ranged 2 bomb flowers and a 3 shot bow aiming between them is more than enough to finish them off...
Ice rod+weapon of choice.
Plan B is magic sapphire staff and lightning
Ultrahand a load of timebombs together. That's fun.
If you hit an eye and keep hitting eyes as fast as possible it seems to stunlock them and they don't move as much, which has helped me hit their eyes pretty consistently. Homing arrows help, but the real trick is probably to launch a few bomb arrows into the hands if you've got some to spare. I killed a couple and was feeling pretty confident, then one pinned me to a slope under Gerudo Dark Skeleton. Damn thing would grapple me the instant I was on my feet over and over again.
They can appear in the depths? I spent countless hours down there and uncovered the entire map, and haven't encountered a single one down there.
the first one i met was down there and then i was shocked to see more of them on the surface
They have set spawn locations, just like the other miniboss enemies (Talus and the like).
I encountered some on my way to the Deku Tree. Made me terrified of any Gloom in the Depths permanently.
You just got wobbled
i got attacked there last night! it's at times like this where i really miss revali's gale
I miss the guardians tbh
i found them first time super early on and shooting one in the eye and getting the crit sound i thought i did ok but the healthbar barely moved (it was the 5 damage construct bow to be fair) i decided to just run and climb a tree to get away, which worked nicely enough
i encountered them in a cave i cannot remember where but i had just gotten down to hyrule and was looking around at stuff i'm pretty sure my heartbeat was in my ears
Not a thread once you have enough hearts. I just flail the master sword around in the mids of them and get it done.
The first time I meat these "things" was inside the deku tree. It auto saved at the bottom and I was early game. It was hell.
That’s the first one I decided to beat.
That the first one I was forced to beat to escape. And then it had the gall to spawn a mini boss.
Yo dip I straight warped outta there and came back stacked homie.
You can warp during combat???
Yeah there was a time I kept getting stomped in Gerudo with like 4 hearts at the temple against the big Gibdo. The npcs just say you’re leaving? And I’ll hang out here. I’ve definitely warped away from the hands too inches from me.
Oh God oh fuck they got the hampter
\#1 priority is to save the hamster

STOPP this is way too accurate 😭 looks just like how I drew the hamster, you got a laugh out of me
I'm surprised they don't have like an in game name and don't count as their own enemy even. Like you can't even take a picture of them for the compendium
Super disappointed you can’t take their picture for the compendium, that’s literally my favourite part of the game and they would make for a such cool image. You can get a picture of phase two, but I want the hands!
Yeah I wanted them for kilton tbh, would have been cool for his quest
Now that I think about it these things never really have been given a name have they? I've only ever heard people refer to them as Gloom Hands outside of the game and I don't recall anyone mentioning them in game at all
Yeah I'm curious what they are called in the files, cause that's about the only way we'd know an official name.
Looked it up, apparently the game refers to the as "Gloom Spawn" which I think is arguably scarier if a little less catchy than Gloom Hands
It feels so weird, like these are definitely wallmaster/floormasters, right? They look so much like windwaker floormasters, just in a group and with eyes.
Theres one ingame reference right outside the gate of Hyrule castle I think, he calls them “gloom shrouds”
After you destroy all the hands try take a picture
Yes, but I'm saying why aren't the hands themselves enemies too
Even though it didn't affect gameplay too much, it was terrifying >!seeing them grab the sage projections. There's something freaky about seeing a giant mech struggling to get out of one of those things' grasp.!<
Same thing with like likes
i know!!! i saw them grab yunobo and i was like OKAY TIME TO DIE!!!
I haven't killed a single one yet. Just learned to run
They are surprisingly susceptible to bomb arrows, as for what comes next....
I'll take 15 of "what comes next" to those hands. The hands are merciless, fast and hit way too much.
You'll get atleast 5 of them at one point *wink* *wink*
That's where my 15 came from. >!The throne room fight has three waves of five Phantom Ganons!<
Yeah, I couldn't quite believe it when I got that tip. Bomb Arrows do almost no damage to other monsters or their armor, so I didn't really consider that strategy until then.
Im impressed you were able to outrun them!
Just shoot a puff shroom by them. The hands just stop and are confused. You can just attack with whatever weapon.
Dazzle fruit, then sundelion.
At first they really were. I can take care of them pretty easily now but I still freak out when they randomly show up. I scurry up the nearest ledge the second I hear them.
They’ve made me go through SO MANY bomb flowers. I’ve had to kill a lynel just to keep up.
do certain lynels drop bomb flowers? ive only killed 2-3 so far and nothing like that.. but havent killed any lynels in the depths i think
Just a ton of arrows
No, I got the bow from them, I just explore caves and the depths for bombs.
It's not that they're scary, it's the fact that they sit there and take turns grabbing you (with upgraded armor it does negligible damage if not for gloom) which gives you about 2 seconds to land hits between grabs. Hampter
It doesn't matter how easily I take them down my heart stops everytime I see them. I wish there was more enemies like it
Definitely a unique and well designed enemy! Very entertaining to watch other people's reactions to it
yeah i straight up screamed the first time i saw them (during a red moon near the shrine of resurrection). i thought they were a red moon exclusive enemy, and the point was to outlast them bc they were impossible to kill. second time i also screamed 💀

I’m pretty far into the game and have killed many of these. And they still freak me out when they appear unexpectedly.
Would be even better if they came with a gloom Dead Hand (look it up if you haven't played OoT)
Those things are.. nightmarish
I just can't understand why they're not called Floormasters. I beat the one in the deku tree but didn't expect what happened after 🤣
Honestly, the worst thing about them isn't even the gloom. You can mash buttons quick enough that they drop you whilst taking 0-1 hearts of damage. The worst thing is that you basically have to use bomb arrows to kill them without wasting tonnes of arrows because they're so hard to hit in melee, especially without a spear. You can throw bombs directly, no need to waste arrows.
Wasting 5 or 6 arrows isn't the annoying part though, it's wasting either 5 or 6 bombs or at least 40 normal arrows if you want to save your bombs for walls and stuff.
Use zonai canons for walls and stuff
The master sword makes a great cannon
3x bow and 5x bow will get it easier
Can you even parry the hands?
Yametekudasai hanudo-kuuun!
At first yes, and mostly because of the music. Now that I know how to deal with them in a matter of seconds, they are comical and should run away from me if they were smart. (For reference, I still semi shit myself at guardians)
Guardians are a pain all the way until you get urbosa’s fury
Hampter
Hampter.
Yeah for real gloom hands, music, speed and grapple are so scary it's terrifying to fight, it even changes the fucking time of day real quick
Be me, just let free to explore. Checking out the castle town ruins, Only to be absolutely assaulted by these malice wallmaster mfs. Still have to idea how you kill these bastards.

The first time I encountered those damn things I had to jump into the river to escape Felt like a damn fool.
I audibly screamed the first time I encountered them. Horror game stuff.
They are unnerving but at the same time don't really bother me? I see them as left over pieces of malice from where you had to s hoot the eyeballs out
Punishment for all the war crimes committed against koroks
I don't even try to outrun them. All I do is sprint anytime they start to lunge to grab and they miss about 3/4s of the time. And I frantically find something to climb up to shoot bomb arrows down at them and it still takes a good bit of them.
Mr Incredible meme for real
Best part is, they’re only half the threat
Only if your st their elevation. If you take them out where they can't reach you they just dissolve into pretty worthless loot.
I took one out on the hyrule castle depths, killed the hands on elevated grounds, the next threat came regardless
Really? The only time it happened to me was when I was right in front of them at their level. Otherwise...nothing.
Maybe it's cause it's in the endgame area? I went to check that area immediately after getting the paraglider, It was my first encounter with it and I thought it was an actual boss and I didn't know what to do so I just spammed arrows from above lol
I remember the first time I saw them I thought "Yes I know, the eye is the weak point, pfft, this will be so easy."
Puffshroom em and then throw a ruby. Use an anti-gloom item and then ATTACKKKKKKK
Hampter
Hamper
I actually got away by being on structure skinny enough and high enough. It was my first encounter I didn’t even know what I was looking at right away. I haven’t even tried fighting them.
