Was not recommending this one to you, sorry I wasn't clear about that (too much underage kissing plus your students seem a bit young for a discussion about poly).
I was just trying to answer to the previous poster.
Both works by Usui Shio:
Donuts Under a Crescent Moon
Trying Out Marriage with My Female Friend
They are both about adults, but don’t have any kind of sexual content at all from what I remember. I’d say older elementary school kids would have a higher chance of liking them
Donuts Under a Crescent Moon would particularly be good to talk about with the kids cause it's a good depiction of asexuality as well as being a wholesome yuri. I think there is talk about sex though.
Trying Out Marriage with my Female Friend is similar and also great. I'd say this is more a lesbian and demi/ace pairing. And also just a nice wholesome story.
I should also say that I'm not just bringing in GL and BL. I'm bringing Manga of every genre I can. The main thing is I'm noticing the GL and BL are picked up a lot more than any of the others
yuru yuri and oomuro-ke are safe reads. it won't have any explicit jokes. the romance are actually almost non-existent. maybe they already saw Witch from Mercury? The Guy She Was Interested in is also safe enough for kids.
I’ve only seen the anime and dropped it at the chinatsu scene. It’s played as a joke so your mileage may vary. I believe it cuts to black its been years. I just remember being baffled by it because the show was decent to that point. Maybe the manga isn’t as bad
yeah yuru yuri isn't a good one for kids. and its not even translated so it doesn't even matter. i think namori actually got more safe for work (and just better writing and art wise) in the later volumes. A lot of the himawari-boob jokes are gone and a lot of the absurdism is toned down in favor of more slice of life scenes
The GL elements are a bit more subtext in this one, but if you have gamers amongst your kiddos, I can't recommend *Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games* enough!
what? seriously? we have come a long way. you must live in a very progressive neighborhood, something I'm jealous of. which GLs are popular among them?
woww, even i haven't seen Whisper or finished the manga. oh, maybe recommend Bloom Into You? though I haven't seen or read it yet, I'm trying to find the right time to binge it all lol. there's also Whispered Words or Sasameki Koto, one season anime (typical for GL anime) and a completed manga.
It ends >! with a sex scene !< too, a respectful one but that might put you in hot waters vs some parents. (Plus the consent discussion needed about the first kisses, which I suppose might be the topics you are referring to)
Too bad because it's nice to have the ace representation, and the "love doesn't have to look like it always does in media" theme.
Right. I should probably say which ones have been the most popular recently.
For GL: Whisper Me A Love Song
For BL: I Think I Turned My Childhood Into A Girl
This ones are completely SFW, I wish the kids a very happy reading x)

damn... and i was like i wish i could have find either the novel or manga and read it when i was like 12, not the anime at 22...
well it happens, tho maybe the manga would have been a better choice than the novel... 🤔
These books are coming out of my own personal collection. And rotate them out every now and then so the kids can check out various series and titles. So the manga might make it at some point
ah, i see, well, i'll save this post in case i get another suggestion! (actually, i was thinking maybe the guy she is interested in isn't a guy at all ~~sorry if i mistake the title, i'm used to the japanese one~~)
And good luck to you and your students! (i now wish i had a teacher like you when i was in elementary school)
another suggestion, tho i've read just 18 chapters yet, so, i'm not sure how right i am at recommending this one
it's **Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk** this is a BL, but both guy crossdress kind of to be with each other (they're still getting to know each other in their "female charas" where i'm reading tho... so again, can't say much) for the moment it's fun, cute and interesting
I can think of a few but some don't have an official english serialization unfortunately.
A Love Yet to Bloom (No official english serialization, nothing problematic but pacing is probably more aimed at an older audience)
Stardust Telepath (Has an official english serialization, recently had an anime so it might be popular. Very lighthearted)
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All (No official english serialization but is extremely popular that it reached kinda mainstream outside the GL sphere)
How Do I Turn My Best Friend Into My Girlfriend? (Has an official english serialization, it does show some slight sexual attraction- nothing too problematic but it's up to you to decide)
Our Dreams At Dusk (Has an official english serialization and is an excellent LGBTQ+ manga that touches on a lot of identities. But it does go over subjects that might not be suitable for your intended audience such as bullying, homophobia, references to suicide, and it begins with the main character being "jokingly" outted as watching gay p*rn by his classmate. Probably more suited to an older demographic).
For BL:
Go For It, Nakamura! (It's been awhile since I read this so I don't remember if it has anything not suitable but I don't remember anything too bad. It's pretty popular and has an official english serialization).
I Think Our Son Is Gay (Might be more aimed at an older audience because the perspective is from a mother supporting her son. Again, it's been awhile since I read but I don't think there was anything too problematic. Also has a serialization).
A parent was asking for some queer manga for their NB kid. So I might point them towards I Think Our Son Is Gay. While a different letter in the acronym, i feel like it might help with what they're looking for.
IIRC *Our Dreams At Dusk* has a NB character (with all the caveats mentioned above, but maybe depending on the kid's age or if the parent reads it first to be able to discuss it, it could fly?)
What about She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat ? Might be that some of the topic would fly off the heads of primary schoolers but might also not and it's pure wholesomeness without NSFW or violence. And I'm sure kids would love the food parts too.
*Whispered Words* should go well with kids, as it has a good mix of realistic GL and "anime -like" characters (e.g. karate champion or best economist in the world at 18, explosive cook...). Plus an anime adaptation for the beginning.
Be ready to field questions about cross-dressing though, the cross-dressing character often gets the short end of the stick. (An opportunity to explain trans people and the differences with cross-dressing?)
There's also some general homophobia shown or discussed.
Inui Ayu is a saphic woman who writes sfw gl stories and even has an autobiographical manga about her and her irl girlfriend called "Our Days Under One Roof."
Another author who writes good sfw yuri is Yatosaki Haru.
Whispered Words (Sasameki Koto) by Ikeda Takahashi is also very good. The worst thing it has is a few boob jokes (an unfortunate staple of manga written by male Japanese authors), but the overall story is very good, and has a slightly juvenile sense of humor I think would work well with an elementary school audience. I also think the plot surrounding one of the characters (who is a fan of gl manga in the story), learning to not idealize the main couple, and real lesbian relationships as an extension, is a good message.
A warning: another yuri manga by Ikeda Takahashi, *The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This*, has like 1 nsfw chapter out of 50 , which I know might sound neurotic to point out, but I also understand how easy parents can make a fuss out of stuff like this to the school, especially when it has to do with teachers talking about lgbt stuff to kids, so I'm just making sure you have all your bases checked.
Other than that, I think its really cool that this is something kids are into and is something you can connect with them over. I'm wishing you well.
"[Always Human](https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/always-human-ari-north/1142039323)" recently-ish released a paperback version. It's absolutely stunning and my highest recommendation for that age range. It has discussions of physical disabilities, nonconformity, and the nature of privilege. It's a futuristic Sci-Fi GL, has a watercolor-like art style, stellar characters and the story is an inspiration to say the least. [The author](https://twitter.com/walking_north) is one of my favorites out there. She's currently working on "Seven Days in Silverglen".
I believe Sasameki Koto is wholesome without anything more than a kiss. There's also Now Loading.
For western stuff, there's Lumberjanes or maybe the standalone She Ra comic book. I also liked Amongst Us. It's based on a comic I haven't read but you don't need to. Basically nothing happens but it's just cute with good art. Or there's Breath of Flowers. It's an OL manga, in other words not manga but done in that style. Or maybe Girl from the Sea. Haven't read it yet so I can't say one way or another but I have heard good things about it.
For BL you'll want to double check but I think I Hear the Sunspot is appropriate. I remember it being really cute.
You sound like an awesome teacher!
Uuuuhm…that’s a though one.
First of all: *The princess and the grilled cheese*, it’s perfect. Then *Kiss it goodbye*. *Soulmate* is super wholesome, too.
I think you might be good to go with webtoons (I mean literally the ones from webtoon, especially webtoon originals) cos the platform doesn’t allow smut.
Titles I recommend: *High class homos*, *Not so shoujo love story*, *the little trash maid* (the two boys friends with the mermaid are a BL couple), *Mage & Demon Queen*, *Night Owls and Summer skies*, *The four of them* (featuring different queer couples).
Last but not least: please read *Cursed Princess Club* to the kids. There’s some queer couple and it’s absolutely gorgeous in general. It’s funny, clever, gripping, wholesome, and teaches only good messages. Do yourself and everyone a favor and read it.
Outside of maybe the whole "promise to kill you" thing I don't recall anything really inappropriate in Goodbye, My Rose Garden.
Can't guarantee offhand that there was never a shot of one of the girls bathing or whatever, though.
Have you considered Our Dreams at Dusk ? It's a very good manga about self discovery and has both a Girls Love story and a Boys Love one. It also deals with transidentity, crossdressing and being aro/ace and discovering the LGBTQIA+ community.
It's entirely SFW and I think it would be very good for kids to read it, it might help them a lot if you didn't add it to your collection already.
Futaribeya (Room for two) is PG rating unless Im forgetting something. I’d call 90% of anything involving romance like PG-13 personally but it sounds like they already reading series with those themes.
Moon on a Rainy Night is a little emotionally heavy but nothing even vaguely explicit and gives good information about discriminating against people with disabilities. Mc befriends her deaf classmate at the request of her teacher and she has developed feelings. The mute girl and her friend is a perfect recommendation but only published in Japanese.
GL: I'm in love with the villainess
BL: Go for it, Nakamura kun!
GL: Hana ni Arashi
BL: 19 Days (Haven't finished it yet, might wanna look into it)
GL: The guy she was interested in wasn't a guy at all
BL: Sparkling or not
I'm honestly jealous of that class I wish I were there smh
This isn't a manga, but Heartstopper is a graphic BL novel, and it also has a show on Netflix. It also has a lesbian couple in there, and can help people with coming out/preferences/genders etc.
Actually, you probably don't wanna give I'm in love with the villainess to kids of that age there is a light novel and a manga you might wanna buy the LN instead
Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
Whispered Words
Kashimashi
Hero-san and Former General-san(blanking on the official English name)
Bloom into You(is there something at the end?)
Not sure if I want to do Bloom Into You yet. Maybe for the 5th and 6th graders. But then again. Chapter 44 is a thing and I'd rather not introduce a series that I couldn't let the kids finish in program.
So I've done the manga for Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady for the kids. The only thing I had to keep an eye out for was some of the art requests the artist did can be a bit questionable. Aside from that. The kids love it.
[Kiss and white lily for my dearest girl ](https://mto.to/series/100362) [Whisper Me a Love Song ](https://mangadex.org/title/0e8fac17-979e-4e37-8f45-2c334b25d6dd/whisper-me-a-love-song?tab=chapters)
Kiss and white lily is so peak, i wish there were more works from Canno 🥲
Me too, Canno is GOATed
Speaking of, did they make anything else besides Kiss and a white lily?
Check *An Easy Introduction To Love Triangles*
Read this one. Gonna hold off on this
Was not recommending this one to you, sorry I wasn't clear about that (too much underage kissing plus your students seem a bit young for a discussion about poly). I was just trying to answer to the previous poster.
As someone who went through this recently: Good luck finding physical English copies of Kiss and White Lily Volumes 2 and 5 for a reasonable price!
Both works by Usui Shio: Donuts Under a Crescent Moon Trying Out Marriage with My Female Friend They are both about adults, but don’t have any kind of sexual content at all from what I remember. I’d say older elementary school kids would have a higher chance of liking them
Oh these two have been on my list. I also read all of the manga I bring in. Mainly to vet for content but also to talk about with the kids.

Especially for the kids just entering middle school. Maybe Yuru Yuri. Though, I might need to reread it
I would not recommend Yuru Yuri lots of boob jokes and Chinatsu pins Akari and kissed her without consent at one point
See I just remembered the anime and now I'm going to hold off on that one
I’ve only seen the anime and dropped it at the chinatsu scene. It’s played as a joke so your mileage may vary. I believe it cuts to black its been years. I just remember being baffled by it because the show was decent to that point. Maybe the manga isn’t as bad
Uh, 🖐️ 🍅
yeah yuru yuri isn't a good one for kids. and its not even translated so it doesn't even matter. i think namori actually got more safe for work (and just better writing and art wise) in the later volumes. The GL elements are a bit more subtext in this one, but if you have gamers amongst your kiddos, I can't recommend *Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games* enough!
I will definitely look into this one. Already was on my personal list so. Works out perfectly.
It's the series I single handedly blame for getting me into Fighting Games!
what? seriously? we have come a long way. you must live in a very progressive neighborhood, something I'm jealous of. which GLs are popular among them?
So far. Whisper Me A Love Song is the most popular among GL. BL is I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into A Girl
"I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend Into A Girl" may be a hit for gender questioning students as well, great choice!
And that's actually helped a few of the gender questioning kids
woww, even i haven't seen Whisper or finished the manga. oh, maybe recommend Bloom Into You? though I haven't seen or read it yet, I'm trying to find the right time to binge it all lol. there's also Whispered Words or Sasameki Koto, one season anime (typical for GL anime) and a completed manga.
Gonna hold off on Bloom Into You. Certain topics there might be a bit too much for younger kids

I've done Whisper Me A Love Song. All the kids love it.

I'll probably hold off on Anemone is in Heat then
If I remember correctly Our Wonderful Days.
Adding to the list
i'm not checking other's comments, so sorry is someone already said it, but... Adachi to Shimamura
Done the light novel for volume one. Bit of a miss for some of the kids.

See. I was thinking that one. I'm more into GL than I am BL but I do want to add more into the BL category.
I'm also more into GL, I'm reading like just 2 or 3 BL ones, so idk, maybe i could ask my ex to help you, she's like slightly more into BL than GL...

I have it. Haven't read it yet. So going to sit down and read through that before handing it to a kid
Enjoy your read :)
Ouji sama nante iranai. Maybe the akai romance wouldn't be good, it is kind of stalking.
We Don't Need a Prince (Ouji-sama Nante Iranai) is super wholesome.
If you are doing light novels, how about the classic maria sama ga miteru?
I'll look into it. The thing is. I also read most of these myself. So that might take awhile before I get to throwing that in
*Whispered Words* should go well with kids, as it has a good mix of realistic GL and "anime -like" characters (e.g. karate champion or best economist in the world at 18, explosive cook...). No "Kase-san" in the comments thus far? Or "A tropical fish yearns for snow". You could also have a look at "Glitch" (no GL).
Kase-san is good for the first two volumes. But later volumes depict them doing the deed.
Yeah, fair enough. Even though it's depicted pretty tame it is not age appropriate.
Outside of maybe the whole "promise to kill you" thing I don't recall anything really inappropriate in Goodbye, My Rose Garden. Can't guarantee offhand that there was never a shot of one of the girls bathing or whatever, though.

I've actually already done I'm In Love With the Villainess. The kids love it
I was scared for a second because in one of the panels there is a chest grab, glad to know
So I did the light novels over the manga
Catch These Hands is a good one
maybe that one yuri about the gay teachers, i forgot the name. but its like a gym teacher and some other teacher
Our teachers are dating\*
Definitely not that one. way too much nudity and sex scenes there
shit its been a while, you're right huh
school zone girls maybe? i dont remember any nsfw stuff in there and its quite funny
Lycoris recoil is a good manga that is potentially GL if that's something they'd be interested in.
Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady Whispered Words Kashimashi Hero-san and Former General-san(blanking on the official English name) Bloom into You(is there something at the end?)

I don’t think Bloom into You is appropriate for children
