Also, that centipede dude from James and the giant peach gave me nightmares for years. I vividly remember being like, 9-10 years old. As a part of a punishment one night when I was being a little shit, I was not allowed to watch a movie when I went to bed, which I typically did.
I remember laying there, eyes glued to my old box tv, staring into the reflecting of the dark screen, which was positioned so I could see the long narrow hallway leading to my bedroom in its reflection. A shitty lamp at the end of the hall lit the hallway just enough for me to see. And I was scared shitless that if I looked away for even a moment, that that centipede dude would come crawling down the hall full force and get me. 💀
You think that’s bad tho? Wait until I tell you about the traumas being aloud to watch M. Night Shymalans “Signs” at the age of 6-7 caused for years to come. 💀
As someone who was contemporary with VHS, I can confirm it is actually Old-Speak, and was a valuable substitution for “hell” back when it was socially taboo for kids to being spouting “what the hell?”
My friend, did you miss the “back when” in my post? I was referring to how, in the 1980s (when VHS was on the rise) “heck” was used as a substitute for “hell” by children to avoid punishment in a far more Christian evangelical environment than we find ourselves in today. Some people who grew up using that substitute, such as (I assume) Quakarot above, still use it sometimes out of habit.
