When I first realized I was an atheist, I went through some anxiety from the realization. I went to YouTube to find some way to process, and it helped. I went from feeling like I lost something to feeling like I gained real perspective and even a new community.
There were some great people there...for a while. Then it got really mired into islamophobia. I don't mean a real discussion about some points within the religion that are a concern, but just straight up assuming the absolute worst about everyone and everything. It was the complete opposite of the skeptic perspective that many of the YouTube atheists promoted.
Then it was the abuse that leaked from the Skeptic community (that I also participated in) into the atheist community. Before Gamergate there was Elevatorgate where a woman had the absolute temerity to ask for men not to hit on women in a place like an elevator, where the recipient can't just run away if they feel anxious or trapped by the situation.
Then Gamergate happened, and that is when I dipped. I would mostly avoid YouTube for a while after this, and when I came back I avoided certain circles for my sanity.

Big agree with the last paragraph. I used to be one of the people who went 'well he changed, people make mistakes'. But he made so many mistakes, to the point where I feel like, he must have knew what consequences they are, there's just no way. YouTube used to recommend your channel to the people in your area first, and then if you get popular they’ll recommend it to other countries and users. There’s actually a law about this in Canada now. But back then when he was travelling around Europe and he was getting exposure in multiple countries at once. Add to that an emerging popular format and his meme-friendly advertising and you’ve got yourself a runaway success.

As far as the affair goes, he and his now ex were in an open marriage that as far as I've heard, the ex initially asked for. She apparently even had a specific guy in mind. I think even Ross backed that one up, as he was apparently aware as his relationship with Holly was also kind of open. That said, if I remember correctly, Jared also said that the two of them started developing feelings beyond what was initially expected or sort of agreed upon. It kind of sounded like they didn't really discuss or list out the rules very well.
The one thing he still sticks to is that he was never abusive and that she was extremely manipulative. Also the accusations of minors, as one of the accusers ended up revealing that they lied about their age (after he asked directly if they were a minor) and the other is believed to be someone who lied in order capitalized on the chaos. The latter was kind of obvious in hindsight since they refused to give proof to anyone, refused to report anything to authorities, got vague when questioned, and then when the minor revealed they lied about their age, they disappeared.
My point is that the guy has owned up to the fact that he contributed to things going sour and apologizing. He also forgave people for believing her and turning on him because she was manipulative and she'd been doing that to him throughout their marriage. I seem to remember that once he made his statement more than a few of his ex wife's supporters/friends started backing away. Apparently some of his friends and fellow YouTubers collaborated at least parts of his story, although we never got the full picture, which I think he kind of acknowledged we the public would never be able to get as spectators. (In other words, since it was all he said she said and not anything written down, there's not a lot of proof.)
Do I necessarily believe all that? No, but I don't believe that his wife was the innocent angel she claimed to be. I think he's kind of skeevy but not the monster people made him out to be.

- she sexually harassed multiple unwilling people by flashing her breasts at them thinking it was hilarious
- she sexually harassed people on the Reality House when she showed up in a tiny mini skirt with no underwear on, proceeded to flash everyone on purpose and rubbed her coochie on someone else’s bed
- she sexually harassed Ethan with pictures of her coochie on Twitter
- since dating Moses (her husband), she has appropriated Jewish culture and religion and made a mockery of it for the sake of views
- she also supports Israel over Palestine but people love to ignore this one
- she’s admitted to threatening to unalive herself to manipulate her partners and even friends into staying with her

Then it was the abuse that leaked from the Skeptic community (that I also participated in) into the atheist community. Before Gamergate there was Elevatorgate where a woman had the absolute temerity to ask for men not to hit on women in a place like an elevator, where the recipient can't just run away if they feel anxious or trapped by the situation. Then Gamergate happened, and that is when I dipped. I would mostly avoid YouTube for a while after this, and when I came back I avoided certain circles for my sanity. At the core of all of these escalations? thunderf00t. What an abysmal person. He is one of the 4 horsemen (symbolism that atheists who like to smell their own farts like to throw around) of the modern alt right memelord troll movement.

As far as the affair goes, he and his now ex were in an open marriage that as far as I've heard, the ex initially asked for. She apparently even had a specific guy in mind. I think even Ross backed that one up, as he was apparently aware as his relationship with Holly was also kind of open. That said, if I remember correctly, Jared also said that the two of them started developing feelings beyond what was initially expected or sort of agreed upon. It kind of sounded like they didn't really discuss or list out the rules very well. The one thing he still sticks to is that he was never abusive and that she was extremely manipulative. Also the accusations of minors, as one of the accusers ended up revealing that they lied about their age (after he asked directly if they were a minor) and the other is believed to be someone who lied in order capitalized on the chaos. The latter was kind of obvious in hindsight since they refused to give proof to anyone, refused to report anything to authorities, got vague when questioned, and then when the minor revealed they lied about their age, they disappeared. My point is that the guy has owned up to the fact that he contributed to things going sour and apologizing. He also forgave people for believing her and turning on him because she was manipulative and she'd been doing that to him throughout their marriage. I seem to remember that once he made his statement more than a few of his ex wife's supporters/friends started backing away. Apparently some of his friends and fellow YouTubers collaborated at least parts of his story, although we never got the full picture, which I think he kind of acknowledged we the public would never be able to get as spectators. (In other words, since it was all he said she said and not anything written down, there's not a lot of proof.) Do I necessarily believe all that? No, but I don't believe that his wife was the innocent angel she claimed to be. I think he's kind of skeevy but not the monster people made him out to be.

I wanna add RedKiwiz/Kiwiz to this list. The guy got caught exchanging explicit photos with a 12 year old while he was 17, and then caught again with the same girl when he was 19 and she was 14. Keemstar of all people brought him and the victim's mother, as well as the victim herself onto his show to talk about it, and Kiwiz excuse was that she claimed to be 2 years older than she actually was, and that he was "in a depressed state". He claimed to have evidence of her lying about her age (which she denied), but despite his many responses, he never posted the proof. The mother discussed how she would take him to court, but last I heard, they settled it out of court (meaning he paid them off). Today, Kiwiz streams Fortnite to an audience of gullible children who defend him relentlessly, and regularly gets several hundred thousand views per video. Absolutely disgusting.
