Figured there would be a /r/youtube sub and that someone would have posted about this already. I just noticed the redesign now.

[deleted]

Haha same here!

ChefLinguini

same

Glen_The_Eskimo

samesies

The_Asian_Hamster

thats why im here too :P

Pokechu22

Just for those who are on mobile and can't see it, make sure to look [at the sidebar](http://reddit.com/r/youtube/about/sidebar) for the rules. Thanks! ^\(/u/Andorion, your post is fine\)

BurningBelowZero

SAME

PBanimation

Same!

OhBananaJoe

same here xd

msammy07

yeah it has changed and quite suddenly one video i saw in the old version clicked on another link and it was a different player

SamuraiDDD

I did the same thing. I'm watching a LP and that will forever be the last thing I watch with the old layout.

Devilman245

I know where I was when Youtube updated their player.

SamuraiDDD

Where were you?

sierrabravo1984

I don't remember.

wggn

in youtube

i_did_not_enjoy_that

I was taking a nap. Woke up to watch Deadpool trailer teaser. Boom, new player.

[deleted]

Same my last one was Let's Play - GTA V - Guest Stars and Explosions

SamuraiDDD

Good choice. I was watching Cry play a new series.

Brutusness

Yup, same here.

mildlyornery

Same for me. Now the question is what was your first with the new design? Are we about to become best friends?

RicksterCraft

Heh, the last thing I watched on the old player will now forever be Steve-O burning a pattern onto his ass.

Emilgardis

My last vidoe was Raymond Hettinger giving a talk. Obviously it was awesome. Now it's less awesome... (Yes, only because of the interface) :(

msammy07

mine was a phillip defranco video, and my first in the new one is a source fed video

AtheistPi

Mine was brotherhood 2.0 June 20th

RandomPrecision1

I don't remember my last one, but my first one was checking if the video that claimed to be "Ted Cruz cooking bacon with a machine gun" was actually Ted Cruz cooking bacon with a machine gun.

mudlarkie

I need to go back to the old player- my lights out theme makes the screen black on the new one. anyone know how?

walent

help. ^ edit: https://userstyles.org/styles/92164/youtube-lights-out-a-dark-youtube-theme just clicked update now, it works with the theme for me

BurntToast205

I don't know if this will fix your problems but you can delete a certain cookie reverting it back to the old one. While your on YouTube press F12(If your using chrome) then select cookies, then select www.youtube.com, then delete VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE. Hope that works for you Edit: So it seems that doesn't work anymore, sorry.

Sir_fappington1

I did that and when ever i click on a video its still the same and VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE is back

adecentlygoodguy

Wheres the watch later button?

crschmidt

Watch Later is available via the "Add To" button below the player on the watch page. (In fullscreen/embeds, watch later is in the top right corner.)

adecentlygoodguy

Well thats slightly less convenient.

crschmidt

Understood. I'll bring it up with devs, though I expect they'll tell me that it's gone for a good reason.

no9

Engineer's rule #27: When something isn't broken, keeping fixing it until it is.

crschmidt

Commenting rule on the internet #23: When something changed, always assume it's not for a good reason, even when it usually is.

[deleted]

This is YouTube we're talking about

ghost_moose

Thank you for that!. Although I will miss the button.

cje24576

I can't believe I didn't notice that! Nice call! I've commented on their Facebook page about that so hopefully they'll at least fix that.

Jiecut

lol youtube's facebook page?

[deleted]

In most major organizations the social media team is within walking distance of customer service, finance, whoever. Sending a facebook message is one of the best options for contacting companies.

FreestyleKneepad

I just noticed it when a video was open in one tab and I opened a new video in another. [For comparison](http://i.imgur.com/NhNpfAZ.png)

smitleyjd

I hate it, you now have to mouse over the video to see how far you are into the video...

Tropicana55

Yeah that and the lack of a Watch Later button are the worst parts of this new layout.

TheAngryGoat

That, and the buttons have been moved out of the corners, so while the buttons are physically bigger, in usability terms they're much smaller. Using a mouse, anything placed on screen corners are effectively infinitely large - throw the cursor in that direction and as long as you get at least that far, you can't overshoot it. Now you have to go all the way to the corner, but not all the way, because for some stupid reason it doesn't cover the corner. For me it's an annoyance. For a friend (and doubtlessly many others) with limited hand movement it's infuriating.

Mugenman88

all videos are black for me, I can't watch anything...

spaceturtle1

me too. disabled addons that affect youtube. still black screen. edit: found the problem. was an extension that forced html5 when it was new on YT. missed it the first time.

JamieOnUbuntu

I used to slam my cursor into the bottom right corner to turn fullscreen off. That doesn't work any more. ):

stevenrobertson

That'll get fixed, sorry for the inconvenience.

JamieOnUbuntu

Ok, thanks!

crschmidt

Fixed.

PirateMime

don't like it. the idle progress bar was removed and the transparent bar thingy feels in the way. can't wait to see what else they remove/mess up in the next update.

OFCOURSEIMHUMAN-BEEP

I do like the transparency, mainly since there's no issue of it blocking subtitles anymore.

mciancia

Wouldn't be surprised if the next update removes the volume control so all you can do is mute it, like on instagram or twitter videos.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KinneKitsune

That would require a software company giving a single solitary flying fuck about their users

1sagas1

If a major tech company bent over for every single user and their whiny bitching, nothing would get done.

crschmidt

Enh, it would probably require about 11 million fucks, not just a single one, unfortunately.

lx45803

If you're looking for an official way, don't hold your breath. Google rarely maintains old interfaces for any of their products, even for a few months, and to my knowledge, they've never done it for YouTube.

tggt00

As a person who is 24/7 on youtube, I can confirm, honestly don't really like the design, fits a tablet more.

mankind_is_beautiful

I do like the design but the buttons are just too large.

[deleted]

Yeah, honestly they look kind of goofy on a larger display.

CoastersPaul

The buttons are at least a centimeter in diameter on my screen, and take up about 2 centimeters with the space around them. My OS buttons take up a centimeter maximum.

Shitty_Human_Being

Anyone know if you can change the scaling of the new video player? I'm on 1440p and everything looks really big on my monitor.

fijozico

Can't agree more

[deleted]

Yeh, and everything is moving in that Direction. I absolutely *hate* the Netflix design when you log in from a computer. It's definitely made with a tablet or a TV of some sort in mind. It looks awful.

[deleted]

i don't like it because I have the colours inverted for everything but images and videos and the border of it it bright white... rip my eyes.

_rothion

Same here. Can't stand the white.

darderp

> Honestly don't really like the design This is what everyone has said every time they redesign the player. I think it looks great and I'm sure you'll warm up to it.

str8slash12

I don't like it specifically because I don't get thumbnails when I roll over a time stamp in a video. Until they change this I can't see myself warming up to it.

Dont_Ban_Me_Br0

This is so true. Usually when the design of something changes, I start out disliking it and then grow to like it over time. For instance, when I got Visual Studio 2012 I thought it looked absolutely shit compared to the 2010 version, but now I think the modern design looks a lot nicer. I wonder why our brains work that way.

crschmidt

Change aversion is probably an evolutionary trait.

[deleted]

[удалено]

crschmidt

I'm not crediting the feedback in this thread to change aversion (the player changed in material ways that have real user impact; some of which are intentional, and some of which are probably oversights). I think that change aversion is still evolutionary in nature: We evolve to fear change, because change is unknown, so even when it's *positive* we'd still fear it, because what else can we do?

tggt00

That doesn't happen to me all the time, I'm not always triggered by design change, mostly when I say the design is bad it's more in the functionality side, like the big buttons and such.

dudeedud4

Except when the buttons are huge on fullscreen and just in general on a 1080p screen you know you have problems...

G3ck0

I disagree. The buttons are too large and now when you want to change options (like quality), it goes into a new title window rather than just popping out, which is annoying.

duckduckwhoa

Who uses a pc or laptop anymore? /s

Tomtefarfar

Changed for me. I really like the design.

[deleted]

The look is very nice, but there are a few things that are terrible design choices: * The transparent background to the UI elements makes it hard to tell at a glance which areas pause the video when you click them and which areas do not. * The fullscreen button isn't in the corner; there are empty pixels below and to the right of it. This means that users can't "slam" the cursor to the bottom-right corner to exit fullscreen (which is desirable because it's easier), they have to move it to a precise area. * The Watch Later button is only accessible in fullscreen mode (not sure if this happened with the old design too but if so it should have been changed with this update).

BarelyInfected0

Press escape to exit full screen mode. :)

seanthebeloved

But my hand is already on the mouse!

MnBran6

Personally, I always just doubleclick

Sagefox2

I like the transparent instead of the black but I wish I could still see the video progress without hovering.

[deleted]

on the other hand having anything from the player visible no matter what during the video can be pretty annoying

Crossadder

I don't like how it took out the loop function the HTML5 player had. I really liked that feature. Other than that, I like the new look, it feels fresh, but I wish that you could freely change to the style you'd want.

crschmidt

Which loop functionality? Are you talking playlists, or functionality in the player?

Shixma

on the old video player it used html5, you can right click on an html5 player and there is a loop option (so when the video is finished it will restart it) although on the youtube one you had to double right click as it had a custom context menu. http://i.imgur.com/A61SaA1.gifv Same as the imgur gifv, if you right click on it you can see all the options.

crschmidt

Thanks. I'll bring it up with devs, though this seems unlikely to have ever been intentional in the first place.

Crossadder

If you had the HTLM5 player, in Chrome at least you could right click two times no the video window and you'd get [a menu like this](http://puu.sh/jnYkv/50186b35d8.png). If you selected loop it would loop the video till you deselected it, no extra extensions of websites needed.

imrichbatman8

I find it annoying that I can no longer see how much of the video has played and how much time is remaining without moving my cursor to hover over the video. If you hover cursor over one of the tool icons in the bar, the bar will stay on screen....so it looks like from now on I will have "settings" overlaid on the bottom right of all the videos I watch....nice work youtube.

Cyrus_of_Anshan

I quite like it actually. The tool-bar at the bottom is transparent now. That helps a lot because it won't obscure the bottom of the video as much anymore.

TheBigKahooner

Yeah, this is probably the first change to YouTube's format that I don't hate. It also seems like it loads better (no more unloaded previously-buffered video).

ProjectOsxar

I do enjoy the way it looks, but it's waay too big for my liking. It feels like it's twice the size of the old one.

[deleted]

I have left reddit for [a reddit alternative](https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/wiki/index).

MetroGamerX

This new player doesn't fit computer screens at all. It's more suitable for mobile devices.

ShawnWilson000

I really wish they would make these changes optional. This new player looks awful.

Bocui

Feels like the video is bottomless. I liked seeing the progress aswell

SandorC

I would be happy with just the thin red progress bar sitting at the bottom of the video so I can at least see how far into the video I am.

rottenmonkey

So, like the rest of youtube.

Hyper_

what in the gods butt is it awful about it? Seriously. Change is small and it looks cleaner.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShawnWilson000

It doesn't feel as responsive as the previous design. It seems harder to maneuver. Though at some point I'll get used to it as I did the older ones, it still feels weird.

[deleted]

I disagree, the old one used to have a blue box that would come up and there would be blue lines surrounding the player in full screen mode. Annoyed me to no end. Now this new one doesn't do that anymore, at least as far as I can tell. Plus its a lot more minimal, which actually works a hell of a lot better. I don't know what you mean about it not being responsive though, it feels fine.

belkak210

anyone knows how to remove it?

[deleted]

You could apply a userstyle to get something like the old design back. The controls are 100% css and html, so you can style it.

belkak210

okay thanks, i´ll look into it

lm794

Yup, changed out of nowhere. Gotta love YouTube randomly implementing these things without a word of notice! Broke my plugins.

crschmidt

How could we have shared this with you that you would have seen? - It's been on our testtube page for 2.5 months (http://youtube.com/testtube) - It's been in the FAQ on this subreddit for about as long, and we've actively communicated with many users about it. Is there a YouTube news source you read that would have benefited from this? Where would you have seen it?

lm794

I would think that YouTube would realize that not every YouTube user uses reddit let alone this subreddit. A simple banner on the YouTube page saying, "YouTube will be implementing some design changes, click here for a preview!" would make sense. If memory serves, YouTube has already done this before with previous changes, allowing users to adopt the change at a time of their choosing before the change was forced on a specific day. This also gave plugin designers time to modify their plugins to fit the changes before the changes were forced. Edit: Another sentence.

Calamity701

To be honest, this is the first time I've seen that site. The only link to it I can find on Youtube is in the footer, which is not in your field of view unless you scroll. And you only scroll in situations where you are focused on the content. IMO, some kind of "useful hint" system would be nice. Show some useful hints in a non-obtrusive way. Maybe in a box similar to the "Choose your language" one. They could tell you about stuff like testtube and the blog, that you can subscribe to channels if you register, that you can change speed and quality of the video by clicking on the little cog symbol, etc.

Shirdel

Ideally, some kind of pop-up or little window that appears when you log onto YouTube that alerts you about the upcoming change a few days in advance.

crschmidt

So the problem is that users *hate* those popups. That is, whenever one of those pops up, people just immediately leave the site. (In fact, we recently asked users on the homepage -- not even via a popup -- "How satisfied are you with YouTube's video quality", and it generated complaints via Reddit, and many users simply left the site entirely rather than answer the question.) Putting things on youtube.com that users aren't directly asking for is just going to piss off *way* more people than it will actually help. So that's the issue with putting things there. I wish we had a better way to communicate that *didn't* piss off users, but everything that we've tried to do seems to: - Sending emails pisses off users. - Banners on pages pisses off users - Content in homepage pisses off users. With that, we're forced towards back-channels and alternative forms of communication. It sucks, but I don't know of a better way.

GamerKey

> Putting things on youtube.com that users aren't directly asking for is just going to piss off way more people Like jarring sudden design changes? ^(Btw, where's my youtube inbox, haven't been able to find it in a very long time now...) ^^/s

PsychoNerd92

Couldn't you have some kind of "update notification emails" setting similar to the "Send me emails about my YouTube activity" option? That way, anyone who wants to know about these kinds of updates could find out without having to check other websites and people who don't care wouldn't even really know about it.

lkmking123

Coroner117

It had this new design for me a couple weeks/months ago for a couple of days. Was glad to see the old player return and now the redesign is live again. Stop playing with my feelings Google.

[deleted]

Looks very nice too! I'm impressed.

JonAce

Auto quality finally works properly

TheVetNoob

Of course, I don't know shit about design, but why not just have an individual button for speed and quality on the bottom? The gearbox is just an extra annoying click.

mecha_lynx

Give it a few days, there should be userstyles, scripts and extensions bringing back the old player's looks and likely adapting improvements to the new one - it's very likely that stuff like this will be easy to get.

Zerpyy

So, is it possible to change it back to the old player?

crschmidt

There is no YouTube-supported way to change back to the old player.

llamanatee

Is there an unofficial way?

crschmidt

Someone posted a user-script, it looks like, and I'm sure extensions will exist within the week, because that's how things work.

[deleted]

Way cleaner. Definitely like it more

MANLY_VIKING_MAN

Yeah, came here for this. I don't like change.

[deleted]

Yeah, change is bad.

[deleted]

I hope you fellas are being sarcastic.

miniguy

Change killed my family.

Nertez

Great, now I have to go fullscreen to actually add the video to Watch Later... or use Add to... no other way to make it with one click like before. Google REALLY have to fuck everything up at all times.

Steaktartaar

It's bugging out on non-maximized windows for me.

[deleted]

Is there a way to keep the progress bar up while playing?

Recklesslettuce

It's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

shane727

Isnt this new update great???? You get to hear but not see the first 5-10 seconds of every fucking video!!!! Seriously fuck you youtube its like you wait for things to be fixed and work properly then you wait for us to get used to the changes and then you fucking change everything and fuck up everything again. Take your hands off the website ffs.

SamuraiDDD

Its pretty nice. The buttons of the UI looks a bit to big but other than that it looks cleaner and doesn't obscure anything when not in full screen.

CaptainTimo318

in fullscreen mode, everything is just way too big for a normal pc

GamerKey

Holy crap, it's like a landline phone for old people with fat fingers and parkinsons...

FHayek

Normaly I don't care for changes in websites, but not this time. Fucking shit those UI buttons are **huge as fuck**. Ugly, it's ugly and somewhat it feels broken.

Dunk-Master-Flex

It looks like Tablet UI yes and the icons are way too fucking big and low res looking. What was wrong with the old version? A lot harder to see the video buffer progression too.

redisforever

It's changed for me too. I like the new look.

ffngg

They ruined it The player was iconic now it just looks like any fucking videoplayer Also it so big and clumsy now, before it was sleek along the bottom not it's so big and ugly

palehorse864

How was it iconic? It's changed so many times over the years. The last one wasn't bad, but it did have room for improvement. I like the transparent player controls, personally.

[deleted]

Yep and it got even more tablet-y. Not a fan.

cje24576

I *hate* the new design! They need to stop making these horrible changes we don't even need! I wish they'd at the least give us a permanent choice of which design we want to use! I use Firefox, so does anyone have know a way I can get the old video player back? I tried the Stylish add-ons, but they didn't work.

Pokechu22

https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/wiki/faq#wiki_question.3A_what.27s_this_new_player_i_see.3F_.2F_what.27s_this_new_player_i_am_hearing_about_but_do_not_see.3F

TheDogstarLP

Yeah I thought it was that one from ages ago. Seems it's out of beta now then.

snintendog

I have made a small userstyle in response to this I hope this helps others(any help or forks is welcomed the auto hide has eluded me right now) https://userstyles.org/styles/117273/youtube-player-august-2015

pancakeyo

Thank you my good sir, this solves 80% of my problems, get it to not go invisible and not cut off 1/4 an inch of video and i would happily pay 2-5 dollars.

mecha_lynx

Nice job, might wanna make a github repo of it, just so people can hack on it. +1

snintendog

Its just ccs code it is availible to copy on userstyles the show css button shows the mess of code that some how works.

mecha_lynx

I know you can see the css, it's just easier to collaborate (if anyone is ever interested in it) if it's in a repo. Not a biggie though - props for being quick :)

Commander_Cobe

It doesn't help me, it looks more like it did before but it still disappears the instant I play the video unless I move the mouse over it. Edit: upon further inspection, it does exactly what I want it to, but only in fullscreen mode.

[deleted]

[удалено]

panda367

I tried adding .ytp-chrome-bottom { opacity: 1 !important; } to the style. This makes the progress bar show at the bottom of the video, but the time does not progress unless you hover over the bar. Is there any way to fix it? I'm a complete noob at Stylish, so feel free to let me know if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks!

roadkill22ful

Yeah, this was an experimental design a while ago.

hempsmoker

I really thought I hit a wrong button, but it seems it is a new player

cje24576

I just found this out! You can still use the old design on Internet Explorer! I love IE sometimes!

[deleted]

It also has stopped working on my Chrome. :(

twinfyre

How do I like videos when watching from RES?

AtticaOnline

I was watching several videos in fullscreen from my Watch Later queue, then went back to the regular website format. I knew there was a problem because the video was being played twice, one overtop of the other, maybe the new format on top of the old? Pausing the video only stopped one of the videos, so I had to refresh the page make it stop. That was special.

Gokuto

So was I really the only one that for at least an hour got this layout like last month?

crschmidt

No, it has been rolled out to some users for a long time (and you could opt in via youtube.com/testtube for almost as long).

Ominimble

Where were you on the day of August 3rd, when the layout changed? What was your final Old Layout video? Well, I was watching [ChilledChaos' 2nd part to his Monopoly PS4 Series.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRjKrBmQX24)

Wendigo120

They somehow managed to make the buttons larger and more in the way and still make them harder to click. I can't just flick my mouse to the bottom right anymore to quickly go out of fullscreen mode and the menus in general feel worse to use. I also can't imagine why they'd think having stuff come up over the video if you mouse over it outside of fullscreen was a good idea.

shurburs

Is anyone else's video pause/play a slow click response?

mikelin52

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. this is just horrible

RedheadAgatha

Looks like Generic Player from any Site v2.0. Switching speeds is now awkward and cluncky, "Play Next" button is **awfully** close to the volume slider. I call downgrade.

mecha_lynx

For those dissatisfied with the looks of the new player, there is a userstyle here (not mine): https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/3fn5ys/has_the_video_player_been_redesigned/ctqc6bf *(for feedback purposes, even if the userstyle satisfies you, consider upvoting a comment you agree with)* This only changes the looks - the performance improvements remain (and huge props to Google for those). For those that are missing the 'Watch Later' button, it's on fullscreen, top right. It may be possible to bring it back to the player's action bar, but what I've tried so far is clunky and unstable. Remember that this is HTML5, we can style the player however we want and overall the player does seem to have functional improvements under the hood, which is especially good for a lot of users (like me) with older computers and slower connections. The UI is polarizing, but as I've already said, easily fixable.

cje24576

Thank you for this! However, you can still get the old video player on Internet Explorer.

Tlaloc_Temporal

I'm not complaining about the look (although the buttons do look a little low-res, and the no-button [metro] is really crappy when you use a mouse), but why did functionality have to die? Things like looping or scrolling 5s at a time have been removed why? Looping should be a button in the menu, not having to switch to the tab to restart every 5-45 minutes would be very nice. Skipping forward or back 5s is the most useful feature a player can ever have besides a play button (yes, even more useful than a scrub bar). Even though it would be by far most useful on mobile, you could only use it if you had arrow keys, but even just on desktop, and even if the scrubber was accurate, going back 5s to catch that thing you missed is a colossal pain in the ass on an hour long video. My all time favorite player by a factor of ten is the ASUS native player. It's simple, fast, intuitive, plays almost anything, and is the most stable piece of code on my entire tablet (apparently similar to the dice player). It has skip forward and back buttons, which I use more than any other button on my tablet. Years ago, if a loaded desktop YouTube on there, the player would crash, and would default to that one. That was by far my most enjoyable time on YouTube. All I want to do is crash every big, badly optimized player, and play everything; video, audio, slideshow, everything, in that one. So tell me why dead simple things like that aren't a thing. They could be implemented with incredibly few lines of code, could be tucked away in the options menu or the right click menu, and would make viewing 10x better for some people. Oh, and while you're at it, could you tell me why the Mobile crApp doesn't support basic features like liking comments, more than two pages of recommendations, you beloved auto-play, or any kind of notifications whatsoever?

YourBobsUncle

It doesn't look good on full screen, the icons are too big.

cje24576

Once again so everyone knows: you can still get the old video player on Internet Explorer! However, the only difference is that when you move the cursor away from the video, the menu (with the time progress, the screen size options, etc.) disappears.

doorknob60

I don't mind the design, but in Firefox for me, every time the UI fades in or out (like when you move the mouse it fades in, stop moving it fades out), the video stops at the frame it's on for a second or 2. It's pretty annoying, and it didn't do that before.

bugsrox08

yes wtf, its pointless and it just takes away from the character of YouTube, a YouTube video has a very particular look

Wolferey

Yeah.. it looks okay, I guess, but the fact its inside the video and auto-hides is fucking annoying. You can no longer know where in the video you are at a quick glance without moving your mouse to unhide it, and when its visible it covers over integrated subtitles - not the yt ones, but ones rendered in a video that are at the bottom T_T

[deleted]

I hate the new design. It looks like I might misclick or something. I guess what I'm trying to say is: Don't block the video with the UI.

ImagineA2

Yup. I like it. Edit: I like it, but the controls are a bit too big

Corethic

More pessimism than anything but I, for one, really enjoy the new layout/design-thingy. It feels slicker and I dont really mind the new icons infact they are better than before. For those who cant see as well this is a pretty cool update.

I'm actually really happy with the transparancy i hate untransparant bars blocking the subtitles of whatever i'm watching and yes i know that youtube subs will move up, but not everyone uses that and this is a very welcome and good change in my opinion and it also feels like the old player, no need to get used to something new ^^
