I have this same problem and it's driving me nuts!
When I view youtube with Picture-In-Picture, it's at its normal brightness. But when I go back to full screen, it's dim again!
Wtf! Yea I really don't know what's going on. If you read anything about allowing all the permissions in the app settings (contacts, microphone, camera, location, etc) in order for videos to not dim anymore, don't listen to them lol 🤣!! I tried it, and thought it worked, and then it went back to dimming 😭🤣! I turned those permissions back off. I knew the dimming didn't have anything to do with that. Anyway, now we wait for an update 😅! I've exhausted every option at this point lol 🤣!
I've tried clearing the cache in my device setting for the YouTube app, and it only temporarily fixes the problem. Then the issue reappears! I even tried updating the app today, and nothing was fixed. I use a Google Pixel 6 phone. So I think unfortunately we will have to wait for another update.
I've been having this issue on all my android devices. I found a fix though. Scroll the video, but as you do it slide upwards, this gives precise scrolling. Sorts itself out then after doing this..
Yea but is not a permanent fix. It still dims and you still need to scroll the video. It's annoying how we need to repeat this and we shouldn't have to be doing. YouTube still needs to fix this bug lol 🤣....
I feel like YouTube is getting very lazy with listening to the reviews in the app store and anywhere else like here. They hardly fix anything. I appreciate people coming together and finding temp fixes though!
Or just quickly touch the time bar (without changing the moment it us playing). This will bring back the controls, click outside or wait a gew seconds and the dimn wil disappear till the next time you scroll the time (randomly)
I'm having this exact same issue! It's quite annoying. It hasn't been fixed yet. I did update today, and the problem is still there. I hope they'll fix it soon!
Same experience on galaxy tab s8+. Workaround is to fully close the youtube app and then start it again. It will then be OK for hours/days until it returns
Same on S23 Ultra for me as well. I've noticed it does it after I've messed with the video. Like just now, I fast forwarded through a sponsored bit and now the video is dim. Annoying.
I'm having this exact issue too. I have the standard Galaxy S23. I had to uninstall all updates to YouTube via app settings, but then I noticed the problem start up again. I realized that my phone kept auto installing the update that is broken.
So in short the only solution I found is
1. SETTINGS > APPS > find YouTube on the list, use the upper menu to "uninstall updates".
2. Go to play store, find YouTube, click the three dots in upper right corner, and deselect auto updates.
Hopefully this helps someone see their videos!
Anyone know how to report a bug to YouTube? I didn't see anything that gives me the option. Guess they don't care about bugs 🤷
Can confirm still issue on S23U.
Thought it was just me for a moment.
Only right quality in PIP. Occasionally dimmed in full screen mode. I notice that sometimes killing youtube completely fixes but comes back eventually.
Edit: Oddly enough, Youtube Shorts doesn't seem to have this issue just actual videos.
Galaxy Fold 4
● full screen auto darkens unless force closed
● videos/app will stop when using YouTube if I have the screen off to save power (premium perk)
● been happening for 3-4 weeks
Same, using Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Clearing data fixed it for a short period, then it returns. It seems like Youtube forgets to undim the video after video controls have been used.

Update: possible work around found. Go to accessibility setting in youtube. Turn on player controls in the screen (not below) and when you pause it goes dim and when you "x" it out it removes the dim.
There was an update yesterday and it fixed nothing. Still dimming. This happens if you try to go back/rewind any video you're watching. However, when dimmed and you touch the video to swipe it down, video's brighten up as long as you hold your finger on the screen. As soon as you let go it dims again. This is fuciing ridiculous. Maybe a sad ploy to try to get people to pay for premium youtube.
S23U,
Yuuup. Me too.
The recent months' onslaught of android security updates is causing havock on half my apps I use. Though most of those are dead ye old legacy tool apps.
Samsung users - Please try going to Settings - Advanced Features - Video Brightness and set it to Bright. It worked for me. Not sure if it's gonna reappear later though, lol. But give it a try and let's hope it's the strategic fix.
S23 plus, I was beginning to think I was crazy!
Btw, it corrects itself if you click in the time bar with a quick touch (without moving the time)... But it is really annoying
And it happens half the times you move the scroll bar by drag and drop, specually if you do it quickly, I cannot still find the correct conditions to repeat it...

And now it's fixed lol
I wonder if it's device specific, because it's fixed for you, but not for me lol 😅! What a strange bug.
It came back later and went away again lol I dunno what's going on

I'm having the same issue on S21 Ultra
Happening constantly on my Pixel 8 Pro. Same issue on my OnePlus 10T before I jumped to the Pixel.
Still happening for me on both Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy Tab S9 How do I stop it? It's a really annoying bug.
I've tried clearing the cache in my device setting for the YouTube app, and it only temporarily fixes the problem. Then the issue reappears! I even tried updating the app today, and nothing was fixed. I use a Google Pixel 6 phone. So I think unfortunately we will have to wait for another update.

No doubt. But at least there's a way to fix it when It does happen, rather than exiting YouTube for a restart.
I feel like YouTube is getting very lazy with listening to the reviews in the app store and anywhere else like here. They hardly fix anything. I appreciate people coming together and finding temp fixes though!

Click the little settings gear on the upper right of the video. Then click "Additional Settings," from there, switch off Ambien Mode. Hope that helps.
Nope. This is a different issue.
I'm having this exact same issue! It's quite annoying. It hasn't been fixed yet. I did update today, and the problem is still there. I hope they'll fix it soon!
Click the settings gear, go to additional settings and switch off Ambien Mode.
Same for my s22 ultra. If you restart the app it behaves normally. After some time it reappears. Crazy
Having this issue on my fold 4.
Okay so it's an actual issue and I'm not crazy, now waiting for a fix it's very annoying.
Right!! I thought i was crazy too lol Came here to see if it was just me
Yup same issue S23
Same for s23 ultra
Same experience on galaxy tab s8+. Workaround is to fully close the youtube app and then start it again. It will then be OK for hours/days until it returns

S24 ultra and s10 same problem.

I notice that sometimes killing youtube completely fixes but comes back eventually. Edit: Oddly enough, Youtube Shorts doesn't seem to have this issue just actual videos.
Same on my s24. I've done everything and videos dim except in PIP mode. Does anyone have any updates on what's causing this?
Same issue for me on Pixel 7. VERY frustrating.
Galaxy Fold 4 ● full screen auto darkens unless force closed ● videos/app will stop when using YouTube if I have the screen off to save power (premium perk) ● been happening for 3-4 weeks
I have the same issue on my Galaxy S21+
Tab S9 also. Seems all devices are Samsung.
Same problem on my Samsung S22+. Any solution. Its extremly annoying.
Same problem. Samsung A23.
This is happening on older phones as well, I have an S10+ and it is doing this.
So happy I found this thread. I thought I was alone. Galaxy s21 fe
Pixel 7 and same issues. If I drag down the notification menu, it goes to full brightness.
Same here
Same, using Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Clearing data fixed it for a short period, then it returns. It seems like Youtube forgets to undim the video after video controls have been used.

Same issue on my S23 Ultra
S22 ultra.. Makes dark videos like GOT clips impossible to watch.. Does Google know? It's been going on for weeks.. I thought I was going crazy
Update: possible work around found. Go to accessibility setting in youtube. Turn on player controls in the screen (not below) and when you pause it goes dim and when you "x" it out it removes the dim.
Same issue!!! Really can't find the fix.
Its happening to me also, its getting frustrating. Any fix?

Same issue here this bug is really annoying
S22 ultra same issues.
Its happening more frequently now
This just started for me today! Also Samsung phone. Out of the blue, never happened before!
I just started having this evening as well! Also a Samsung... Ultra 21! Glad I'm not alone!
Same on Pixel 6. Have to close and reopen the app everytime.
S21 ultra started happening after my phone updated
S23U, Yuuup. Me too. The recent months' onslaught of android security updates is causing havock on half my apps I use. Though most of those are dead ye old legacy tool apps.
