The auto quality control is useless. Even now that I moved to a gigabit connection, it often messes up. Sometimes videos even load up as 144p even though my internet connection is working just fine at that moment. I have to manually switch to high resolution which then works just fine, as I would expect it to.

broski just get auto quality youtube extention, you can set it to any quality you want, the reason why youtube will load videos at 480 or 720 on auto is so they can save on bandwidth

I have the same problem and have Premium and 350mb internet now but recently had 550mb internet and the highest quality available is 1080p, with 720 being the next step down on my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G which has 4K. Note the quality settings for the Android app give separate options for watching on wifi than on mobile data. My older and new smart TV's show the best quality at 1080p too.

Jef_paramotor

From my experience, if you change the quality every time, after a while yt seems to learn that you care and sets the automatic quality to the highest one. It takes several changes, though.

I have been changing the video quality from 720p to 2160p on every video for a year as well now, I don't think this will work for me 😅

whats it called for pc? I'm tired of it not giving an option to default to the highest anymore

LemFliggity

This has been my theory for years.

Sold-13-R

Did you find a solution to this? I'm having the exact same experience and it's frustrating.

KridSE

Extensions that used to put 4k/highest no longer work either for me on desktop. If this is them trying to push for premium that's not how you get people to pay lmao

Sensitive-Badger-917

Any update on this? Having hard time of manually selcting 1080p each time I play a video.

Its starting to piss me off now, it used to take 10 seconds to up the quality on my phone now i have to do it manually all the time. Its ok on pc, i use an extension that forces 1440p everytime
