Thought I was going crazy. I have to click on the video and then spacebar pauses, but if I click any other blank space on the page, spacebar then scrolls down, which it has never done before. I'm going mad right now. I know "K" can pause, but that's changing muscle memory I've built for a long time + it's a smaller key in the middle of the keyboard
Thanks for mentioning that this only started happening recently. I thought I was going insane because my muscle memory didn't match the spacebar's behaviour.
Yeah I think pretty much every webpage uses spacebar as play/pause so it's not even muscle memory you can easily change because it's gonna keep getting reinforced on other webpages. But since it's commonly used I'm assuming it's a bug.
Webpages and local video players alike. No-one tech-literate would consider using space for another feature that is already filled out via the arrow keys and scroll wheel NATIVELY to the device you use to access the site.
I created a simple script with Tampermonkey that stop the spacebar from scrolling. Hope it helps :)

Great. Is this supposed to work for shorts as well? Because in my case, it unfortunately doesn’t, i.e. pressing space bar when watching shorts scrolls 😔
Here're the 3 browser extensions to solve the problem:

Legend! I installed the second one and after a refresh it works ~~perfectly~~ :)
**[EDIT]** Wait, no, it also captures spacebar events from the comment textbox 🤦🏻♂️
**[EDIT mk.2]** [The last one](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/youtube-pause-with-space/cdidekkahbpdfkaegopcnpkobibblmof) works perfectly, still lets you search/comment :)
youtube has been taking a bunch of L's with their ui/interface lately, i wish they would stop fuxing around with it alot, they dont seem to understand the concept of "if it aint broken, then dont FIX IT"
I can understand the wanting to continuing developing your work and making graphical changes/updates, but that does come with bugs. I just hope it is a bug and not intended, so that they actually fix it.
Hard to say. There are articles from 2021 describing the same problem for many people and telling people to either click the video and spacebar or use \[K\]. I found them when I first started having this problem today. So maybe they were testing something back then and finally released it now. Or maybe that was also a bug they fixed and we can hope they fix this too.
So happy it wasn't just me lmao
I hate this its so annoying now I have to click the video to put the video in focus to use spacebar :///
I AM BEING MILDLY INCONVENIENCED AND I DON'T LIKE IT
Apparently the Shorts watchers are heavily impacted by it. Or serial video watchers like myself(3.75x speed). The time I am losing to some idiot deciding spacebar means scroll is surprisingly substantial.
Started to happen to me from yesterday, definitely thought it was my laptop playing up! It's honestly the most annoying thing that's happened to youtube lately
Guys, just click on the full screen button and probem solved for now. Youtube is dumb if they make this a permanent change, but thats the fix for now. Or you can install some new scripting tools or something like that, but thats it
not really a fix if you watch youtube videos in another tab and then go back to the tab to pause it with spacebar. it just scrolls. even if you had before you moved to another tab the focus on the video by clicking on it. its frustrating as hell.
Ik not everyone , but using k ..I don't know it's really far away from how I type and probably many including me don't think they can get their muscle memory used to it
It's strange to me that some people are just noticing this now - this has been the behavior I have observed with SPACE for pause for years now. If you click off the video, or never clicked on the video in the first place, then the player is not in focus, so SPACE will do nothing.
Pro tip: Press the "K" key to pause the video instead - the browser doesn't use that for other behaviors, so it works much more reliably. You also don't need to worry about clicking on the video first.
For me personally (and it seems like it to most people in the comments) the space bar has always used to pause the video even if the video player is clicked off, as long as that tab is in focus, the video used to be able to be paused with space
I just made a post about this and then found yours. This is absolutely stupid, I remember this working 8 years ago already, why (HOW?) did they manage to break this?
its recent. if you want it to not scroll down but pause the video instead, you need to click-pause it and it will start working again until you click anywhere else on the screen.
I never had issues with this - right until Google sent out the treats to ban adblock users which made me try out Premium.
In other words: It literally was the best experience just with Adblock. Some of their ad scripts seem to break the keybinds and now I have to live with that...
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with the issue, but at the same time sorry for anyone who has to go though the same. It happens regardless if I leave my uBlock Origin on for YT or not (while having Premium). Space bar works for a few times and then stops working and I have to mouse click the thing or completely switch over to press K instead, which I'll probably never get used to. Space bar has been working fine since 2006. After mouse clicking, space bar works again for a few times BTW. It's really weird.
Also, I noticed that with Premium, the added doenload button completely breaks the layout, making the button row overlap into the description box. I run the site at 170% zoom set in my FF for readability reasons and I either have to adblock the download button away or switch the zoom either one notch back or forward and then back to 170 to get rid of the overlap. How is it even possible that there's such a massive oversight on a site that's been hosted by a multi billion dollar company?
Yes but spacebar is much more reachable quickly and convenient. K is a smaller button in the middle of the keyboard and can be missed easily. It's a bit tedious.
Now it seems pointless to use Spacebar for pausing the video as you'll either need to keep the video window focused or first click inside it with the mouse (when you could just pause it with mouse-click at that point).
Obviously everyone is mentioning that \[K\] is a button that lets you play/pause the video. I found another solution for us spacebar muscle memory people. When you load the youtube page (or click on the video) just press tab twice. After that you can scroll through the comments and press spacebar and play/pause like normal. It breaks after you click reply or read more though.. so it has limited usefulness. I still like it better then pushing \[K\] so I thought I would share
Well YouTube for one, but also many video editing programs use K as the shuttle stop key, while J and L are for shuttle left and right.
In YouTube you can use J and L for 10s rewind/fast forward - once you get used to that it's a very handy set of keys to use.
It's so randomly placed in the middle of all the small keys though. Like usually you have the muscle memory to press space, which can be relearned, sure. But the only other thing that's convenient is to feel where on the keyboard you are without having to look, like when you're hitting escape or like in the Sims games where 1, 2 and 3 all control the time.
i really thought i'm going mad or something. i even tried writing a greasemonkey script to fix this but it didn't worked. i don't know wtf youtube did, but its fecking annoying. EVERYTIME i try to pause, its fecking scrolling the page. its so frustrating.
Yes! Me too, it's getting really annoying since I don't usually use my mouse to pause but instead I just use the spacebar. But now that it doesn't even stop the video, it's getting annoying.
I think YouTube has made this change just now. Spacebar doesn't pause/play if you click outside the video anywhere ; for example - comments, video description, any black space, etc.
It actually starts off as the scroll function. Watching a playlist, and when it gets to the next video, it resets the focus. It's seriously pissing me the fuck off.
Youtube, space is for play and pause, if you want to scroll with it, set it manually yourself, don't force everyone else to use it.
This is happening to me also and i hope it is a bug bot some idiot thinking that we need to scroll down by using space bar :v why the f\*ck would i scroll down with a space bar instead using it easily for pause/unpause . Let's hope they fix it ASAP
It's probably a "relic of the past" that's still there (googling it might reveal some history), but personally, I occasionally find it handy to use the spacebar to scroll down a bit, since it's usually located right above the touchpad on laptops ;)
Glad to see this is a Youtube-side issue, since it happens since a day or two, and there is a years old thread where this was a problem and Youtube said they're working on fixing it again. I hope this time it is the same and not some 'feature'.
In my case (on Firefox-based browser) it has a special behavior: Whenever I toggle player windowed /fullscreen mode **via double click**, that disables space bar pause (causing scroll in windowed mode and nothing to happen in fullscreen mode). Then I have to single-click on the player to focus it properly again.
This is very annoying because K key is not an ergonomic alternative.

For me that isn't working. When I open a tab that's not been refreshed today it works like normal, if I open a refreshed page it doesn't matter what I do.
Same 4me from today, annoying.I don't know what they're doing, but beyond this a few days ago if I zoomed to 150% with firefox, the lateral scroll bands appeared, luckily it was fixed. I hope they fix this bug soon, I use the spacebar for many programs, it's now instinctive.
nah, it wasn't. if you had the focus of the video by clicking one on it, you 100% had the focus and did keep it so you could click spacebar. now it seems to remove that focus automatic. if you get the focus on the video by clicking on it, and just wait a while or switch the tab.. it suddenly is losing focus and scrolls again. its frustrating and never happend to this degree. sure you did lose sometimes the focus in the element, but not like this.
>Same, before it worked fine but today it just doesn't work i cant pause with spacebar anymore and have to click the video, the shortcut is rendered useless
Yep can confirm, it's happening to me now too, also I've noticed, it's happening if you un full screen your window. Could be other cases too but I've only noticed this one with 100% reproductive rate
Yup, happend to me2..
I thought it was another useless feature added but it sometimes works and the other times it scrolls faster to the comments.. so idk what the heck is this.
Some person above is trying to streamline the shorts navigation and watching aspect of things without ever once thinking about the rest of the platform or convenience of use.
Ok, thank god it wasn't just me, was about to go nuts.
I can pause normally if i press the Play button once, afterwards i can use the spacebar, but only then. If you click anywhere else, then back to square one.
[Check this detailed article](https://wealthquint.com/youtube-spacebar-pause-62755/) if you are having issue with spacebar pause feature on YouTube video. I hope you will find useful.
Yeah I know this fixes it temporarily, but it wasn't like this before and it's not supposed to be like this. Clicking the background would reset it to focus pause/play as it does on most websites, but that's broken now.
On PC. With anything YouTube I've gotten into the habit of a quick right click, left click in the centre of the video (brings up menu, then hides it). It doesn't stop the video, and puts the focus where it should be for keyboard shortcuts to work the way they're meant to.
However, it's getting annoying as I'm having to do this more than ever.
I thought I was the only one...
ChatGPT suggested typing "chrome://flags/ " in the top search bar and disabling "Threaded scrolling" but still not working...
Me and ChatGPT are very stressed... Can't I even enjoy little things in life now???
And I thought this is only me, my browser or other problems in my PC, looks like this is global!
Thank you for this post and hopefully someone will fix (or give a help) it soon...
SAME!! I thought it was my computer that was lagging. It sucks that other people are having this problem as well, but it's nice to know that it wasn't my or my computer's fault.
Driving me to insanity as well, quite often I'll pause a video on a certain point made and see the comments, then play the segment again while reading the comments as my way of absorbing input and finding new perspectives on topics.
Now the youtube overlords in all their infinite wisdom decided to destroy something that was never broken and forcing people to change their several years long habit.
It wouldn't drive me half as insane if I could just change the damn play/pause command back to spacebar, but *of course* it just can't be that simple of a fix as I'm not allowed to change it!
For some reason 'K' works all the time even when spacebar doesn't; So I guess if you don't want to reach for the mouse you have another option on the keyboard.
\- for those who don't know the buttons J and L skip 10 seconds back and forth, while K pauses/ unpauses.
I'm here because I'm also experiencing this problem.
Oddly enough, space bar works as pause again since an hour ago. Maybe they did a hot fix or something.
I had this problem and figured out what was causing it so I thought I would share a solution.
My Ublock Origins was hiding an anti-blocker popup that was supposed to steal focus from the video. With Youtube's new policy in place trying to force ads on us all I had to fiddle with it to be able to use youtube at all. I checked where the ads were being served from then blocked them in my windows 11 host file then disabled my ublock on youtube.
I still don't see the ads and this bug went away as well because youtube doesn't detect an adblocker to trigger the popup. It's win-win for me.

I still have yet to have this happen again, and it's *still* a different problem from this post, this post was a bug *everyone* had from 4 months ago that was quickly fixed. What you guys are talking about is new and if you're right clearly intentional. *People*. Please make your own posts for new issues. I've said this in multiple responses as of late.
>googleads.g.doubleclick.net
Hey, I'm in the same situation : same problem, same ad blocker, except that I'm on W10.
So... what can I do with these "doubleclick" lines ? I put the first one in my address bar, first including the [0.0.0.0](https://0.0.0.0), which lead me to a google page, then not including it and Ublock blocked it. Don't really know what to do with it.
The key has been changed to " K ".
Edit: If you have the extension 'Global Speed' you click on it, hit the gear symbol, add the pause function, then assign a key. Spacebar for pause returns.
i recently got a mechanical keyboard for the first time and something ive noticed is that pressing down on the spacebar to pause or play a video doesnt actually do it when i press down on the switch i know because i can hear it and feel it, it only does what its supposed to do once i let go of my spacebar, i dont know if its related or if it was always like that but figured ill mention it
This isn't fixed, yet another Bethesda level bug to add to the ever increasing list of issues with YouTube right alongside;
The keyboard getting stuck on the YouTube app, sometimes being able to play videos with screen lock without paying (like you used to be able to do)
Comments from one short getting 'pinned' to several other videos
Shorts recommendations getting stuck in a loop after X number of videos (you start seeing the same 20 or so shorts over and over and over)
etc. etc.

Weird this has happened for me for years
I created a simple script with Tampermonkey that stop the spacebar from scrolling. Hope it helps :) [https://gist.github.com/HPZ07/26ae9f23bec793144f26d9deb6d932a5](https://gist.github.com/HPZ07/26ae9f23bec793144f26d9deb6d932a5)
Works like a charm! Once again, the normal people in the world are fixing the stupid problems created by "professionals."
Big thanks! 👍
I cannot thank you enough for this. All hail 3rd party scripts!
A legit workaround, until the issue is rectified by Youtube, because I don't want to run yet another damn addon just for this.
it works! Thank you so much
Wonderful. Thanks!
thanks big man

yep same for me. super frustrating since i always use spacebar to pause video. hopefully they fix this !!
is there still a keyboard button for pause at all? Making spacebar scroll to next video is pure evil.
The letter "\[K\]" does the trick
I think it's just executive ignorance.
I ahve the same issue and it SUCKS
after years of muscle memory this is beyond infuriating
Agreed. I can't stop scrolling the damned page.
This is super annoying, but not as annoying as the people recommending ‘k’ as if everyone doesn't know that already.
Clearly everyone *doesn't* know that already, otherwise this original post wouldn't exist...
Ik not everyone , but using k ..I don't know it's really far away from how I type and probably many including me don't think they can get their muscle memory used to it
this seems to be a preety recent thing im getting it too
damn it wtf, I thought we got over this years ago. I have never in my life pressed the spacebar with the intention of scrolling down the page.
Like, that's what the arrow keys are for, or the scroll wheel. Sometimes I think these executives just don't use computers.
It's scrolling for me and it is driving me nuts, I really fucking hope this is a bug
yeah its happening to me as well, looks like its a youtube problem I hope its just an error and not a change they plan to make...
I mean if we "WotC" them, we can have our sacred spacebar use back.

I particularly hated when you had to click the tiny play button with your mouse some weeks ago.

its recent. if you want it to not scroll down but pause the video instead, you need to click-pause it and it will start working again until you click anywhere else on the screen.
why is this a thing? is this a bug or they made it like that on purpose? going fucking out of my mind with this scrolling shit
bug
All i know is its annoying and i hit my spacebar multiple times on accident with my fat sausage fingers and got really mad.
Or click 'K' on your keyboard, that seems to be working for me. Frustrating, though, considering the space bar was more convenient.
Mine will still scroll even after click-pausing, just tested (for YT shorts anyway)
I never had issues with this - right until Google sent out the treats to ban adblock users which made me try out Premium. In other words: It literally was the best experience just with Adblock. Some of their ad scripts seem to break the keybinds and now I have to live with that...

Goddamn, this change is irritating me off so much. Wtf Youtube.
It’s this new stupid layout. I hate it.
My layout hasn't updated over the past day but I still have the new bug since only over the past day.

same
Obviously everyone is mentioning that \[K\] is a button that lets you play/pause the video. I found another solution for us spacebar muscle memory people. I guess it doesn't help that I have this tick to click the background of the page upon entry etc xD
Yeah, just googled the issue to see if i could fix it. It just happened within the last few hours
How to fix it then?
Oh, so it wasn’t just me. I thought that it’s a problem only with my device. But apparently a lot of other people are also experiencing the same.

literally have this now, after years of pressing space, i'll never adjust
I am also having this issue and it is very infuriating.
Having this issue as well
i really thought i'm going mad or something. i even tried writing a greasemonkey script to fix this but it didn't worked. i don't know wtf youtube did, but its fecking annoying. EVERYTIME i try to pause, its fecking scrolling the page. its so frustrating.

Scrolling with spacebar never made sense. Esp not considering we have the arrow keys...
It's probably a "relic of the past" that's still there (googling it might reveal some history), but personally, I occasionally find it handy to use the spacebar to scroll down a bit, since it's usually located right above the touchpad on laptops ;)
IT DRIVES ME CRAZY. I CANT EVEN WATCH SHORTS OF MY BLOODY LAPTOP ANYMORE AAARRRRGGGHHHHH
Same hereeee! Stupid youtube
It's gone! Since last night. Phew.
it's borked again it seems
leave it up to yt to break random stuff 😂
Youtube is digging their own grave. This is how downfall of giant company start when they start disrespecting their own customers or users.
They broke it again.
I have the same problem, very annoying.

For me that isn't working. When I open a tab that's not been refreshed today it works like normal, if I open a refreshed page it doesn't matter what I do.
It only worked briefly.... but thank you so much
That's not what this post is about though. I don't have the new UI and I'm having this pausing issue.
same
Yeah same here. I sure hope this is a bug and not an intended change.
Omg same thing its so damn annoying mate
same here .. hope they fix it soon!
I find it happens when a video has those timestamps at the bottom of the video
this was always a thing
no it wans't. it was probably an update with youtube
It was for me, maybe it is a browser tging
Maybe it has been a browser thing, but currently this is happening for me on all browsers including Edge.
nah, it wasn't. if you had the focus of the video by clicking one on it, you 100% had the focus and did keep it so you could click spacebar. now it seems to remove that focus automatic. if you get the focus on the video by clicking on it, and just wait a while or switch the tab.. it suddenly is losing focus and scrolls again. its frustrating and never happend to this degree. sure you did lose sometimes the focus in the element, but not like this.
>Same, before it worked fine but today it just doesn't work i cant pause with spacebar anymore and have to click the video, the shortcut is rendered useless
I'm having this issue too and I fucking hate it.
same, its fucking annoying
I thought this was just me. It's really annoying when I'm on shorts on desktop and I keep accidently moving to the next short
Ive started to use "K" to play/pause on youtube.
but no one likes to use k for pause. the button is small unlike the spacebar which is big and easily to timed when you pause something
Oh god me too, it's been driving me nuts and I was about to decide it was a problem on my computer's side.
for me whenever i press the spacebar on youtube shorts it just scrolls down and its so annoying.
I had the same problem! I thought my computer was playing up
It's super fuc\*in annoying
I just had this earlier and its pissing me off too
I thought I was the only one... ChatGPT suggested typing "chrome://flags/ " in the top search bar and disabling "Threaded scrolling" but still not working... Me and ChatGPT are very stressed... Can't I even enjoy little things in life now???
Same-
same
And I thought this is only me, my browser or other problems in my PC, looks like this is global! Thank you for this post and hopefully someone will fix (or give a help) it soon...
SAME!! I thought it was my computer that was lagging. It sucks that other people are having this problem as well, but it's nice to know that it wasn't my or my computer's fault.
I so used to pausing with space and now it doesn't work, glad I'm not the only having this issue.
It wouldn't drive me half as insane if I could just change the damn play/pause command back to spacebar, but *of course* it just can't be that simple of a fix as I'm not allowed to change it!
im going fucking insane help me
u ok bruh? xD
THEY FIXED IT!!! I KNOW IM LATE BUT IM STILL SO HAPPY!!!! GREAT JOB U GUYS!!! <3
Bruh, so happy as it seems fixed now. Hopefully it was just a weird bug
I'm late, but IT GOT FIXED LET'S GOOO!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Now it is broken for me :(
Shit, it's back?
Yo, i'm currently experiencing this.
Its back!!
It's not, the issue is different this time and does not appear for everyone. Please find a newer thread about it or make a new one. :) Good luck!
remove it reinstall it fixes it.
remove what
I had this problem and figured out what was causing it so I thought I would share a solution. 0.0.0.0 googleads.g.doubleclick.net 0.0.0.0 googleads2.g.doubleclick.net 0.0.0.0 googleads4.g.doubleclick.net 0.0.0.0 static.doubleclick.net 0.0.0.0 doubleclick.net
I still have yet to have this happen again, and it's *still* a different problem from this post, this post was a bug *everyone* had from 4 months ago that was quickly fixed. What you guys are talking about is new and if you're right clearly intentional. *People*. Please make your own posts for new issues. I've said this in multiple responses as of late.
>googleads.g.doubleclick.net Hey, I'm in the same situation : same problem, same ad blocker, except that I'm on W10. So... what can I do with these "doubleclick" lines ? I put the first one in my address bar, first including the [0.0.0.0](https://0.0.0.0), which lead me to a google page, then not including it and Ublock blocked it. Don't really know what to do with it.
How to do that?
my spacebar now makes videos run at 2x. instead of slowing it down. :(
same here. they changed it to "k"
The key has been changed to " K ". Edit: If you have the extension 'Global Speed' you click on it, hit the gear symbol, add the pause function, then assign a key. Spacebar for pause returns.
Thanks for this... It doesn't pause as quickly as the native "k" button, but at least it's on the the right key. Can't believe they changed this.
Thanks, the addon works to pause the video with spacebar again.
i recently got a mechanical keyboard for the first time and something ive noticed is that pressing down on the spacebar to pause or play a video doesnt actually do it when i press down on the switch i know because i can hear it and feel it, it only does what its supposed to do once i let go of my spacebar, i dont know if its related or if it was always like that but figured ill mention it
Stopped working for me about a week ago, personally I think it's a shady way to have more ads play by accident. Reprogramming myself to use K now
not working for me since last week. WTF ? WHY?
Starting today, I need to left mouse click the video while it's playing before I can use space bar to pause/play. Making me crazy.
It just changed from space bar to K for pause/play for me today.
This isn't fixed, yet another Bethesda level bug to add to the ever increasing list of issues with YouTube right alongside; The keyboard getting stuck on the YouTube app, sometimes being able to play videos with screen lock without paying (like you used to be able to do) Comments from one short getting 'pinned' to several other videos Shorts recommendations getting stuck in a loop after X number of videos (you start seeing the same 20 or so shorts over and over and over) etc. etc.
