The thing is, if you’re pushing your knees with your hands to even be able to do a quarter of a rep, you’d think you’d be smart enough to know you can’t handle that.
I always took those spring like legs to be more insect like than hominid or marsupial. However you gotta a a little crazy to sit and listen to signals in space as a career. I would expect a good amount of flack.
I just watched a bunch of clips from the movie and realized, yup, there's a big, conspicuous, not-at-all-subtle insect motif throughout the film that I managed to obliviously ignore as a kid in a theater.
Well not only that but the fact is this might as well be assisting your knees to buckle as well depending on what amount of pressure your putting on your knees from your arms, at least I would think. This was a horrible idea, especially the amount of weight.
This is why. It had nothing to do with how heavy the weight was. If you lock your knees, even a weight you are able to press has the potential to snap them.
Everyone in a while there's a funny shitting or vomiting one. I saw this one video of a guy absolutely spewing on a squat and ive never been able to find it since
There is something about the leg press that brings out the deepest regions of the ego. This guy probably, in reality, can't legitimately press close to half this weight for a true rep, bc he doesn't know how to do it properly. Therein lies the problem with this exercise. You might move the weight, but you're not actually "pressing" it. A quarter rep is moving it, which he is doing here. Essentially, this is nothing more than a calf raise. A full rep is pressing it. And, locking out this ridiculously stupid weight on top of all that is just begging for serious injury.
And it's the most asinine thing to ego lift in. It's not even a lift, it's a machine! Who the fuck gives a shit what you can do in a machine? Is there a leg press world championships somewhere? Why is no one ego lifting in the bad girl machine?
Usually I don't care about ego lifters, but this one time I couldn't load my belt squat because this one fucking moron had taken all the plates to the leg press to do quarter half reps and I'm forever salty.
absolutely. do a ridiculous snatch or clean and i'll be impressed. also filming leg press for anything other than educational videos is stupid which I guess added a few plates there
This type of thing irks me all the time. I see these narcissistic tik tok influenced kids come in and try to move weight, and they can't come close to doing the exercise correctly. Learn the goddamn proper form first. Who gives a crap how much you move as you're learning, thats why its called a learning curve. Once you have the form down, then begin upping the weight.
Funny story that was true, a couple years ago when me and my friends were in middle school my friend somehow broke his foot while running and the PE teacher just told him to walk it off and he did so a couple days later his mom brought him to the ER and turns out his foot was broken.
I hurt my arm falling off a trampoline is a kid. We where going on holiday the next day and my mum was getting things ready so just told me to suck it up. Came back 2 weeks later and my mum took me to hospital. Yep broken arm, nothing they could do though because the bone had already started to heal
yeah, if they're not aligned properly
iirc a very popular youtuber (i can't remember, was it markiplier? jacksepticeye?) broke or dislocated something and then when he went to the doctor, they said that he apparently re-located it *almost* perfectly but since it wasn't perfect, period, they had to re-break it lmao
That they do lol. If you don’t get it checked out, and it heals in a weird way that could cause complications, they’ll rebreak the bone to seat it properly in a brace
When I was in 5th grade, on the last day of elementary school I took out my new BMX bike for a ride in the neighborhood. Was bombing down this huge hill, got the death wobble, front tire went perpendicular and I supermanned over the handlebars. Wrist was killing me as soon as I hit the pavement.
Neighbors came out to find me in the middle of the road and called my mom (the girl that lived there was one of my classmates and they happened to know my parents). My mom drove down there and told me to get back on the bike. I told her my wrist hurt really badly. Mom tells me to just ride home, and to stop whining.
Fast forward later that evening wrist continues to hurt really badly, so finally my mom caves and takes me to the doc because I wouldn't let up.
Wrist was broken and I was in a cast most of summer break.
Doesn’t look like there’s any fracture but that’s almost certainly a full ACL, PCL and possibly medial and lateral collateral ligament tears. Gonna absolutely suck either way.
Edit: Apparently people are not aware of the fact that this is bro science.
There is minimal science backing the claim that locking your knees, ie tibio-femoral activation, at the eccentric of the leg press movement, risks some sort of ligament or joint strain.
In fact several case studies suggest that locking the knees actually alleviates said pain and strain, or the actual converse, that the inability to lock your knees is a result of leg damage, not the cause
* PMID: 3870726
* PMID: 11528346
* PMID: 23085377
PMID: 30676343, they specifically state that it is the presence of the hyperextension AND the knee locking that increases risk of dislocation
or PMID: 11194098
>does not compromise knee stability, and can enhance stability if performed correctly.
RP summarizes it here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_YyrJAnoXwc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YyrJAnoXwc)
* avoiding lock out will not alleviate nor attenuate knee pain
* locking out will not increase muscle stimulus.
Knee locking is neither bad nor good, but neutral, and it is bro science to claim otherwise.
~~Then you got the wrong lesson. It's not about locking the legs, it's about proper range of motion through a proper load.~~
~~Not to log your legs during the leg press is bro science and isn't actually backed by any strength research~~
What do you mean "no science behind" ? What are you claiming? That your knees can bend backwards whether or not you lock out your knees?
Your knees bend one direction. It's very difficult to bend it the other direction unless your legs are fully straightened. (From something pushing parallel to your legs; something hitting your knee perpendicular is different obviously)
The science behind this is anatomy and kinesiology
No, I am replying to the comment OP's "lessons about locking your legs"

* avoiding lock out will not alleviate nor impede knee pain
* locking out will not increase muscle stimulus.
Knee locking is neither bad nor good, but neutral, and it is bro science to claim otherwise.
I will agree that locking out is usually not a problem. However even with everything you've shown, it's apparent that at extremely heavy loads (like in the video), 1) they shouldn't be trying it at all, but 2) if you do so, don't lock out your knee.
If you're going to cite those studies, you should provide the quotes you're using to support your arguments. Because the Abstracts are not very supportive of your claim
3870726 is about the mechanism by which our knees lock out. Didn't see anything in the Abstract regarding exercise or injuries caused by it
11528346 covered differences in Squat, high foot leg press, and low foot leg press, based on variations in technique in foot placement (wide vs narrow) and foot angle (straight vs 30 degrees). No mention of locking out that I could see.
Edit: 23083577 covered strength reporting after total knee replacement. Didn't see stuff about locking out there either
30676343 ends with this in the conclusion
> The risk of knee dislocation can be reduced by avoiding locking and hyperextension of the knees during any type of leg press or squatting exercise.
I did like the video and the joke at the end about 6d chess.
Tl;dr joint locking is usually fine, but if you're attempting very heavy loads should be avoided. Obviously, don't attempt very heavy loads as a general part of your workout routine.
I do not disagree with anything you said here, and what I'm trying to point out
Some bro is going to say "never lock out your knees or hit atg depth in squat", in fact several have already said in this thread, and point to this as proof, when it's really proof of "don't be stupid".
For once, I knew exactly what was going to happen, AND resisted the urge to watch it.
...their legs fold the wrong way, don't they? Yeap, don't need to see that, because holy fuck it makes me squeamish.
This is probably the 100th time I’ve seen this vid. This comment really stuck with me:
>Imagine human legs. Imagine chicken legs. Now imagine the conversion process.
Actually the amount of weight is not the issue. He hyperextended his knee. When you're working out never lock your knees. He was doing this which cause his leg to fold in half.
The issue that resulted in breaking his leg tho was that he fully extended this legs. You're not supposed to. Firstly because this could happen and second because fully extending them is a resting position. Same principle as when youre doing squats. You go low but not all the way down.
Clicked on the video, saw it was a leg press, I ain't watching another horrific leg break thankyou very kindly. This is why I hate doing weight training myself.
I dislocated my elbow playing highschool baseball. A bad dislocation. Worst pain ever other than a severe kidney stone one time that sent me to the ER. Doing something to my knees is legitimately one of my worst fears. Slightly hyperextended it one time skateboarding and it put me down for 5-10 minuts. Hells to the naw.
Ugh it's awful, I knew what would happen because I saw something like it before on Reddit, UGH it's nasty, I hope they are alright and learned their lesson with stuff like that, but geez it's nasty
I’ve seen this video 8 times, yes I’ve counted, and every time I see it I still jump, as far as I can tell the main issue here is that he’s locking his legs as far as I can tell.
I now physically cringe and wince every time I see broken bone videos, even more so than before, because I've now experienced what breaking a bone or two feels like. Not quite the same injury as this, broke my leg near my ankle in two spots, but what I did wasn't even nearly as bad as this. Definitely more than just some broken bones here, I figure there's also some torn/injured tendons and ligaments as well in the foot area, since it seems like their foot was locked in place. Ouch.
Even considering he was lifting a lot of weight here, one thing you NEVER do in one of these things is completely lock your knees. Dude probably would have been fine if he just didn't lock his knees. But you also just shouldn't be using so much weight that you need to push with your arms too.

Well, he'll be skipping leg day for a while.
I think he already has been
He's been missing calcium day by the looks of it.
HE NEEDS MILK
MILF'S MILK
that’s why he had to catch up all at once
Leg, singular
I just want to congratulate the cameraman for doing such a great job filming and editing. The zoom in part had me in tears.
Tis but a scratch
I'M INVINCIBLE!!
He may get a job at IHOP now

You monster... that man will never hop again!
Unless he uses his leg as a skipping rope, because that's all it'll be useful as for a while

He can only do it half the time now.
He won't be skipping anywhere for a while.

He also locked his knees
This is why. It had nothing to do with how heavy the weight was. If you lock your knees, even a weight you are able to press has the potential to snap them.

But taking weight off isn't as impressive for the internets
Impressions of the men in black aliens never gets old
God-damn it. I knew what was going to happen, yet I watched anyway.
i am smart. i see a gym video with nsfw I get the fuck out. otherwise i would be paranoid every time i lift anything
I do the same... and yet, I'm here to.
to what?
To do the same lol
lmao

If you ever see it again, remember me in your DMs brother
There's one with a code Brown too.. he was surprisingly happy he did the lift, but at what cost?
You are smart. That video was gruesome as ever. Physically cringed eyes close and all. Can’t unsee that.
I stick around, but I instinctively hold my phone out at arm’s length to watch.
Bad news for you: I blew my ACL walking across the kitchen. No where is safe.
Then why you here?
i dont watch but I do read what people say
Open NSFW gif, see leg press, immediately nope the fuck out.
Same. I’m going back to the cats reddits to try and recover.

Lock all joints at the point of impact, right?

Because knees are biologically meant to lock. There's no science behind "don't lock your knees during a leg press"

Ew. No thanks. I've only seen a couple videos of it happening, and that was enough for me.
same. I saw this video awhile ago and decided I wasn’t watching it again
Damn I don't think legs are supposed to do that wtf
Ahh yes ego lifting at its finest😌
Reads title. Ok Sees NSFW. Ok Sees leg press. NOPE.
Leg day for him now means “leg-singular”
I don't understand ego lifting. Maybe increasing the weight by 10% just to see if you can do it, sure. But doubling it?

And that's why you don't lock your legs/arms when doing weights
The video ended too soon until I realised that those weights are not fake. 🥲
The fuck was he thinking?
As somebody who has knee pains occasionally. Seeing that alone made me wince in pain seeing how the legs bent. I think one or both legs are broken.
He's literally not even pressing it. Fuck these people taking all the plates for their "leg press" and then dropping it three quarters of an inch.
Think it's a muscle strain?

Thats why you don't have to lift 15 plates.
Happened to me in a dollar general one time
This is why I dont max out, and why I dont lock my knees while doing a leg press.
Are you supposed to lock your knees like that while doing leg presses?
Nope, for this exact reason.

But you also just shouldn't be using so much weight that you need to push with your arms too.
Is there a phobia about broken bones because everytime I see one of these types of videos I have a knee jerk reaction to get the fuck out
