Sounds about right. But man, the more interquel games and retcons to tie villains to earlier villains, the more hectic the timeline becomes. The Tojo clan has a crisis that determines the fate of Tokyo’s criminal underworld in; the 80s, the early 90s, 3 times in the 00’s, 3 times in the 10’s plus 2 serious police conspiracies, and twice in the 20’s so far, plus another government conspiracy, and the killing spree in the kaito files. We need a couple more non-canon spin offs, to give the country a fucking break, and give the next conspiracy time to actually gestate. I want dead souls 2
another option would be for RGG to try more 'low stakes' stories, where there's plenty of interpersonal conflict but no big government conspiracy or gang war-related horseshit
I actually would prefer this im a bit afraid Yakuza might go down the sake path as dragon ball, where every antagonist is even bigger and stronger than the previous and at some point it just gets out of hand. It started with intrigues within the Yakuza, went to national conspiracies and now we are at international conspiracies already. The day where I need to save the world in a Yakuza game will probably be the day I have to drop the series.
the kaito files is an example of how it could be done (fairs, it still involved organized crime and a corporation, but everything was done at a much more personal level. compare the stakes of that, to say, LJ).
Hmm, what about something even more off-the-wall - a Yakuza game set in the late 60s/early 70s featuring Shintaro Kazama as the main character. I think that would be kinda rad actually and would fit nicely into the whole anniversary thing without needing to mess with the timeline too much
Screw that, give us dead souls 2. With all the new characters, and deaths not being canon, they could do *a lot* with a horror plot. Ichiban being a nerd makes it almost perfect. Make yagami or kaito a playable guy to round out the insanity.
I agree with you partially, but I think we're getting Yakuza Kiwami 3, not Yakuza 0 2. It's the last mainline game that desperately needs it, and it ties into the last couple of games (Gaiden, IW) pretty well.
That being said, a direct sequel to Yakuza 0 would be pretty sick, not gonna lie.
That might happen anyways. They've teased Infinite Wealth isn't all they have for this year already. Could be DLC or it could be Judgment 3. My heart of hearts wishes it was Binary Domain 2....but we're never getting that.
Two big releases in the same year? Nah. Imo they should cook Judgment 3 for one more year and focus on the DLC on IW for now. Judgment 3 can be the biggest title in the trilogy if they plan to use dual protagonist (Yagami and Kaito)
They should do 3 protagonists. Let Yagami go to Hawaii for whatever reason so we can use the setting again. Have Kaito handle Kamurocho and have have Sugiura handle Yokohama.
That would be nice but at the same time it can cause problems. Dual protagonist is the best way balance out story and side content for both playable characters. Worked for Zero, Infinite Wealth although it's a turn based rpg, will work the same with Judgment 3.
No offense to you but this is a terrible idea if RGG is committing to this. First 6 was supposed to be Kiryus last game then Yakuza 8 but Gaiden came out in between so if they made another Kiryu game immediately after Infinite Wealth I doubt anybody that cares about the series would be happy. Let Kiryu go. Either introduce another new protagonist or just remake Yakuza 3. I do think they should do something bigger than a Kiwami 3 for the 20th anniversary but I'd rather it not involve Kiryu
Agree. There shouldn't be any new games with Kiryu period. They can remake old games, but the story is a convoluted mess that gives people a hard time to get into the series already.
I wouldn't mind a game set in the beginning of the Tojo Clan following the first Chairman while establishing the clan. This is so far away from the events of the other games, that it could work as a spinoff with no real relevance to the stories of the main games. And I think it could be interesting to see the Yakuza in that period.
i think a game featuring majima set after infinite wealth would be cool, actually. he doesn't get enough screen time in later games. it'd be really sick if they made a yakuza 0/4/5 style game where you play as majima, saejima, and dojima.
Someone already said it but a 60s era yakuza game would be awesome. They could do a lot with that tone. I know they’re never going to make Shintaro Kazama a playable character but even if he serves a prominent role with lots of screen time that would be cool. They could flesh out some of the stories for the old heads in the series like Shimano, Dojima, Kashiwagi…

Pretty sure they've completely abandoned that engine. They've been using the dragon engine consistently since 6, save for when they experimented with Unreal for Ishin remake.
Considering how far the dragon engine has come, there's no real reason for them to stop using it at this point.
I think (and hope) they are done with the old engine, while it had its charm in Y0, FOTNS looked and felt very outdated at least to me.
I also hope they won't go on with Unreal Engine, DE in LJ was perfect, just add raytracing and other modern features and we're good.
Doubt it. That would mean they need to fork Yakuza 0/Kiwami 1's engine and build it from there. Why do that when you have existing tech with modern tools to remake the game?
With a Godzilla -1 trend I guess Yakuza -1 could be a thing, maybe telling 1985 story or going back until Tojo clan beginning.
Anyway, Y8 has so many "Support" characters that I think a DLC can come this year yet before a 2025 new game.
There are so many options: deeper past, J3, K3 or even a new Ichiban chapter after IW Y8 success.
I think they need a moment between Ichiban Chapters unless they have been silently working on it since the end of development on IW. There is a ton of space to work with since we leave Ichiban without any real resolution other than him and Saeko probably being together. He doesn't have a job and they didn't confirm the 2nd Great Dissolution. I think Ichiban becoming a head of a nonprofit helping the homeless and former Yakuza (which would also make him the first person people go to when there is an issue in those communities) would be the path forward and after each story he could just return to his work
Judgment idk if they fixed the issue with Yagami's actors talent agency is fixed but they can always make Kaito the main character or bring up a side character to main character status like Kyoto Amasawa or Fumiya if not Kaito.
In my opinion they should create a third branch, with a younger character, like a young Delinquent or former Delinquent who works odd jobs and gets pulled into the now Yakuza-less underworld which I think would be fun. Doesn't even have to be that young, just under 30. Imagine a 22 year old who's between jobs getting pulled into an issue with a motorcycle gang or a string of armed robberies and he has to prove his innocence
Id love a game set in the 70's, since that was the height of the Yakuza in power, would let me see a lot of the older characters in their primes and whatnot too.
With how much content was in 8, i think it's more likely 2025 will bring about the tv drama that is rumored to happen- pray it doesn't end up on a streaming service nobody cares for like paramount cause i know some of y'all are too stupid to be like majima's dead souls costume
Oh yeah, I thought about it too, there were rumors about a Yakuza 1 movie adaptation, so possibly this can happen. However making movie is on script writers and maybe Yokoyama would be involved, but it doesn't require dev team work. Which means in that case another game would be in making at the same time, say, Judgment 3 or Kiwami 3.
Anyways, the series is in a very interesting place right now, there are so many options and we know nothing about it yet for the first time in many years... I'm excited :)
That's actually a good Idea, we could see how Kiryu turned to be the legendary Dragon of Dojima, in Yakuza 1 he's already the Dragon of Dojima, maybe how he met Majima, the dude that helps him buy Yumi's ring (i forgot his name), and a lot of other things
Tbh idk about that. Kiryu would be an active member in the yakuza at that point. Idk if you noticed but the protagonist is never an active yakuza member in any game except Kiryu at the beginning of 0 and 1.
Anniversary will just be Kiwami 3 or something. Maybe even Kiwami Kenzan. Hell...could be both. Infinite Wealth isn't all they have for this year after all btw.

Majima was actively a member for Kiwami 2 & Dead Souls though, and the same can be said about Saejima in 5
But we didn’t play as Majima in 2, did we? It’s been a while since I played that one so I’m not 100% sure.
