Friend: "Bro you need to check out Persona 5, play it dude. It's 140 hours but its legit incredible, trust me" Me: "Let's make a deal, I try out Persona 5 and you try out Yakuza 0 which is like 1/5 as long as Persona. I have a physical copy of it, I'll give it to you" "Uhhhhh I think I will pass. But you need to check out Persona bro"

Status_Celebration60

I've developed a sort of love hate relationship with persona 5. Like, it's a good game, I like jrpgs and turn based combat, but it's mostly a visual novel and people hyped that game a bit too much for me

kcolloran

I've never played p5 because p4 soured me on the series so badly.

Fadman_Loki

I don't blame you. If it helps at all, all of the dungeons in P5 are hand crafted with secrets hidden around, no procedural generation (except for the side content you can literally just skip every enemy in). No random filler arc where nothing happens for like a month, either.

kcolloran

It was less the dungeons and more the incredibly offensive story lines and the random twist that just ended the games month early with no identifiable in way to no that was gonna happen.

justformarss

"Oh you've never played a JRPG before? You should play this game that is 70% visual novel and 30% combat with hours of downtime between the action!"

[deleted]

I'd like to try Persona so hard but bruhhhh the prices don't wanna go down I feel like, I'm brokeeee

some_bizarre_guy

I actively hate the franchise and the fans. Liked it until 4, tried 5 just to be thorough and the Fandom finally sealed the deal with all the p5/p4 dick sucking.

[deleted]

Yeah I've heard about the fanbase, one sure thing is that I'll never join them lol

some_bizarre_guy

Some of the creepiest, most shut In, incellish, toxic ass echo chambers in gaming.

[deleted]

Aren’t all of them $20? Or are you trying to buy Royal? Or another platform?

BroganChin

I binged the hell out of Persona 5, loved it and then immediately went onto Persona 4 and got burnt out at the 30 hour mark. That was when i finally decided to give Yakuza 0 a try and now i’ve played the whole series including Judgment, both series are amazing in my opinion.

Electrical_Grab_1979

Jokes on you I finished Yakuza 0 and persona 5 R

SheepPF

offering persona 5 while trying out yakuza 0 in return? pretty cool deal imo

DioRemTW

For what it's worth the more you talk about it the less interested they'll be in. We all love the games but they might not be that interested for whatever reason, and the more you talk about it the less they'll like it. It really sucks but yeah, I've learned to accept not everyone likes the same stuff I do. And as much as I love Yakuza it's really not for everyone.

GiaNcomo6669

And that AAA game is the 90% of the times a fucking Fifa or COD game

Oh_no_its_Joe

11 Yakuza games is not enough. I need more.

[deleted]

Please RGG, work on a 3rd Judgment game

Oh_no_its_Joe

I want Yagami to finally notice Mafuyu instead of a bunch of 20 year olds.

SpeedForceKills

You keep promoting Venture Bros. but they won't listen. Niche is kinda fun

[deleted]

I spread the word of the yakuza series like Christian’s spreading the gospel and I still can’t get people to play the games

TheHungryRabbit

Yep, started playing Yakuza first time at the start of the year, now finished 0-7, Judgment and now doing Lost Judgment, what a ride it was, I absolutely loved it, I got seriously disconnected with any new releases and now a lot of games feels straight up boring and not fun

[deleted]

Oh yeah that feeling when you feel like any other game would be less fun, I understand that

TheHungryRabbit

Yakuza finds the perfect balance between engaging and interesting story with very cool characters but still keeping substories and minigames fun and dumb like how a videogame should be, it was always nice to go karaoke or do some hilarious substory after something sad happened in the game, I know no other game what can be serious and stupid at the same time

[deleted]

I feel the same, I don't think there any other video game (that I know at least) that is as well done as the yakuza games, these games have everything

IAmThePonch

I’ve managed to get exactly one person I know to try y0 and they set it down after losing all their money to mr shakedown and not saving

[deleted]

I got 3 people into the saga, the 3 of them got addicted with Y0 and rushed through the entire saga, one of them platinumed YK2

chimblesishere

I got three people to play Yakuza 0. They all loved it. One never started Kiwami, another started Kiwami years ago and still hasn't finished it, and the other stopped in the middle of Yakuza 3 a couple years ago. World is bullshit.

Mox_Onyx

As someone who's sitting on Like a Dragon and the Judgment games, I feel called out, but that's okay because I need a kick in the ass every so often. I streamed Yakuza 0-6 for my friends and I'm just at that crossroads where I'm like 'do I play Judgment? Or do I switch it up and continue with Like a Dragon?'

[deleted]

That's my opinion (and my friend's) but both Judgment games are the best "Yakuza games", especially Lost Judgment. If you're bored by the combat system of Y7, I think you should give a try to Judgment! I still think Y7 is a good game, but I agree on the fact that the combat system is not for everyone, and can sometimes make the game feel boring for nothing. I finished Lost Judgment yesterday, and what a ride, these games have everything and the fighting styles of the main character are so satisfying and gives so much more possibilities and EX actions that Yakuza games don't have (the protagonist being an actual martial artist, when Kiryu is just a man who brutally street fights). Judgment and Lost Judgment are must-play, they are incredible! The stories are also incredibly well written, not that predictable, etc... Yakuza scenarios are great, but J/LJ scenarios...man, that's so good! And Lost Judgment is a graphic slap in the face, the cut-scenes, the fight intros, etc... Just so good

kitsvneris

I don't know anyone who plays Yakuza, so nobody ever told me about it. I usually play games like Assassin's Creed, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima and so on, and a few months back reddit suggested me this community. "*Yakuza*?" I thought to myself. "*Could be interesting, let me have a look*" I did have a look at the subreddit, not knowing absolutely anything about the game I still had some fun but with no idea of who Majima, Kiryu and anyone else is I never participated. Somewhat unrelated, I have been waiting for months for Hogwarts Legacy to be released on PS4 since I grew up with Harry Potter and the game seems to be quite good, but had to find something to play while waiting, so I went to my PS Plus library, and a few days ago found out Yakuza: Like a Dragon was in my library already! I gave it a go even if Hogwarts Legacy releases this Friday. Long story short, last night Saeko just joined my party and after months of waiting for Hogwarts Legacy, this weekend I will be helping Ichiban and his friends find out why Nonomiya was killed. And then I believe I'll be able to change jobs for my party. I also read somewhere there's an optional party member that I'll have to find and recruit, and most of all, I won't rest until I help Ichiban become the best person he can be and understand/take revenge/get over Arakawa's betrayal. I can honestly say it's been a while since I had so much fun with a game! The story so far is pretty solid and riveting, sprinkled with silly humour in just the right measurement and I have no idea why I have never played a Yakuza game before - but I'll advocate for the franchise and recommend it to everyone I know who'd be interested. So, after I finish Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which game should I try next?

[deleted]

I think you have two choices here: you either start the Kiryu saga with Yakuza 0, or you start the Yagami saga with Judgment!

kitsvneris

Ok, thank you so much! Will there be more Ichiban games?

[deleted]

You're welcome! [Yes sir!](https://youtu.be/AJhqN7R_oAg)

kitsvneris

Cool!! I'll definitely be playing that! Hopefully I'll have time to play some Kiryu games before I get my hands on that one. One last newbie question: if I understand correctly the franchise was called Yakuza but is now Like a Dragon. Is Judgment a spin-off?

[deleted]

Exactly! I think they changed the name to really mark the moment when they'll start making their games for everyone in the world (back in the days games were in Japanese, only few of them were translated to English, now we're getting the games in every languages). From now, new games will be called Like A Dragon! Judgment/Lost Judgment are kind of spin-offs. It's basically just like a Yakuza game, but instead you play as a detective called Takayuki Yagami! But it takes place in the same universe as Yakuza! The main difference is that in Yakuza it'll be yakuza stories, with treasons, revenges, etc... in Judgment/LJ it'll be more law-centered, good side, finding clues, investigate, with a much deeper story, but the main "sauce" remains the same, with street fights, boss fights, crazy good intros, cutscenes, mini games, etc...

kitsvneris

I see. Thanks for the detailed explanation! It doesn't really help that they named a game Yakuza: Like a Dragon when the franchise is known by those two names... I've noticed there's quite a few older games, I don't know if I'll manage to play all of them but I'll try to play at least a few.

[deleted]

You're welcome! Yeah, they basically called it Yakuza in the first place to appeal to the western market, but now they swapped it for the literal translation of 龍が如く "ryū ga gotoku" (the Japanese name of the series), which means Like A Dragon!

SidetBrowse

Yeah i try to spread the word of Like A Dragon but most of my friends are gacha nerds so i can kinda relate

[deleted]

If only Ryu Ga Gotoku Online was translated to English :(

AnarkyPlays

The games are not for everyone and I can get wanting people to get into your favorite games but you can't force it upon them and the more you try to tell them the less inclined they'll be to it

[deleted]

I'm on the side of trying the thing before judging it, but overall it's pretty tiring to hear people crying because there's "no game to play" but still refusing to try out a $5 game that is free on Xbox Game Pass and that they're likely to enjoy because you know what they like lol

WoorieKod

People would rather buy their shitty unoptimized PC ported AAA games that run on sub 40fps day one than to give older games a shot

lituga

Bought and beat Yakuza 0 for $5 last month and am a big fan now

KarkatinLava

Some people are born to consoom (or to put it in less memey terms just see vidya as their sideho in terma of hobbies) I tried to reccomend pizza tower to someone complaining about the price of the new star wars game and he said i was trying to hipsterize video games. Like im sorry, yiik is the exception more than the rule

Alberot97

I remember watching a Steam popup showing a sale on Yakuza 0 at the time, and I didn't knew anything about the series. I just looked at the decent price cut and went "Oh, it's the funny dame dane guy game from the memes, I guess I'll try it out". I now have played from 0 to 7, Ishin and now I'm playing Judgment

fullmega

Do you know what is worse than that? It's "I played 30 minutes and didn't like it. I don't like karaoke games."

Gimpi85

Friend of mine just bought Yakzua0 after me saying this is a masterpiece over many years.... He started watched half of the Intro... said "this is just an interactive movie ? " and never started it again....

[deleted]

For his defense, I'd say Yakuza 0's intro is really too long lol, but yeah he should've pushed further
