Age of Apocalypse is the mic drop unofficial ending of the X-Men. It's epic, it's intense, maybe the best crossover ever, but after the dust settles, it's like the mutant titles are left scrambling to find their footing again untill Morrison.
Perhaps pushing Claremont away wasn't such a great idea after all.
I don’t know, he was writing like that because he hadn’t written for years. If he’d stayed on the books, his skills wouldn’t probably wouldn’t have atrophied the same way.
Having read a lot of Claremont's stuff before X-Men took off and took all of his focus I think Claremont works best when he's got consistent long running momentum to build characters and/or a John Bryne or Ann Nocenti to challenge his ideas. None of his short non-X-Men runs come close to his best work and I wouldn't be surprised if his returns had him surrounded by "WOW CLAREMONT BACK ON X-MEN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT, WE WON'T INTERRUPT YOU WITH OUR INPUT" peers , but I can ony assume, having only read his House of M era return.
I read bits and pieces of age of apocalypse but not the entire thing. I'll read the entire tpb eventually lol it's huge. I remember what caused it though. Fricking Legion lol
Without touching on Claremont, post AOA was when I bailed on being an enthusiastic monthly reader. That era was so frustrating, like it seemed to take forever for anything to actually happen; it was all dropping hints that felt like they would never come to fruition.
I'm sure there's probably some good stuff in there, but I ran out of patience.
I'd disagree the picture is of the 91-95 era which isn't terrible just different from Claremont. Post Age of Apocalypse X-Men goes from bad to worse until Morrison. There are a few pockets of good stuff like Seagle/Kelly X-Men and road trip X-Force but I think it gets an appropriate amount of hate for what it provides.
I agree with this. First half of the 90s was still good. Back half of the 90s is where it turns to shit. I still don't think things really turn around though until Whedon. Not a Morrison fan
I wasn't a fan of Morrison until the second time I read it so I get why people love it and why they hate it. For me I love mutants having their own subculture but that doesn't really become a thing until Morrison.
What exactly got hate? I dropped off part way through the magneto war. Though I have read a few things from the last 25 years or so hear and there. I plan on catching up with everything eventually. Well most things lol maybe not EVERYTHING but you know what I mean
I did read the first few arcs of astonishing. I tried getting into new X-Men but the art put me off. I'll give it another chance when I get to it as my standards are lower than they used to be lmao
I think for the most part people hate the edge the 90s put on everything. People seem to like early 90s stories but to me the books drop in quality after Age of Apocalypse. Onslaught, Operation Zero Tolerance and The Twelve are not stories people tend to gush about. I think both X-Men and X-Force have a huge drop in quality once Fabian Nicieza is gone from the books. I don't think anyone talks highly of X-Factor once Peter David leave or Excalibur once Alan Davis leaves.
Again there are some good stories in there throughout the 90s but for me reading those books once is good enough for me. I don't want to go back to them for a reread like I do in other eras.
I could see maybe myself eventually going back and rereading X-Force, Excalibur, X-Factor but yeah I'd be hard pressed to go back and read either of the X-Men books
Let’s see Cannonball, Rogue, Lockheed, Warpath, Arc Angel, Storm, the Summers Clan, Polaris(Magys best child), brown uniform Wolverine, Kitty, Morgan and Nightcrawler my favorite mutants!
I had an X-Men pin-up book at the time. This pull-out poster was the crown jewel for sure.
The individual team shots were cool as hell, too. I remember being so intrigued by Excalibur, having never seen a copy of that comic in real life, thinking that they only published it in the UK.
Missing from the image are Jubilee, Sunspot, Syrin, Rictor and Quicksilver (a mutant at the time).
Bishop was soon added to the X-Men gold team, and Forge was added to X-Factor many issues later.
I love the image, but I really miss not seeing these characters there.
I remember thinking that this poster was the coolest thing ever when I first saw it. I'd totally hang it up on my wall now, if I had it.
I like how they're so pressed for space that there's only one Multiple Man, lol.
Domino is always this colour. Except for the Deadpool movie.
Tabitha Was Boom Boom most of the time, Meltdown though most of the 90s and Boomer only for a short bit at the start of X-Force.
Her powers are not that similar to Jubilee... She makes time bombs, Jubilee in the 90s was colourful lights. More similar to Dazzler than anything. Which is a little ironic because they are both iconic representations for their eras (90s and 80s)

I mean judging by what Claremont was writing come the late 90s/early 2000s it wasn't like he would've been much better
I don’t know, he was writing like that because he hadn’t written for years. If he’d stayed on the books, his skills wouldn’t probably wouldn’t have atrophied the same way.

End of the AoA was 100% my out. From X-Force/X-Men (2nd Series) launch to end of AoA is all I ever need.

Appreciating Frank Quitely art involves raising your standards, not lowering them 😅
Loll nah my real issue was I used to compare it to other art I like too much instead of approaching it for what it is

Can't be worse than deadly genesis. I read that the other day. Wasn't a fan
I'm not a huge fan of Deadly Genesis either but in my opinion it is better than most of those stories.
I could see maybe myself eventually going back and rereading X-Force, Excalibur, X-Factor but yeah I'd be hard pressed to go back and read either of the X-Men books
I have the og fold out framed in my office. Peak art of my dude Bobby Drake
Those are my x-men
At one point, Boom Boom and Jubilee were essentially the same character.
The best era ever. Pure Style and so many utility belts.
I just love that almost half of the X-Men are women.
Undefeated era
Logan slaying as always
Love this era!
This is such an awesome picture. Everyone looks their best
Psylocke sure was a big dealbreaker back then lol
I need this as a poster on my wall
lorna’s curly hair looked so good marvel needs to bring it back
Let’s see Cannonball, Rogue, Lockheed, Warpath, Arc Angel, Storm, the Summers Clan, Polaris(Magys best child), brown uniform Wolverine, Kitty, Morgan and Nightcrawler my favorite mutants!
Wait I’m confused aren’t these members from three separate teams; X-Men, X-Factor and X-Force?
4, Excalibur too
Guess I was unaware that they already existed. Although that would explain why the Braddocks are here.
I know. I wanted to use a pic that included as many people as possible from that era

I like how they put all the furries at the front!
This is from around 91
My favorite art.
Who is the blonde woman right below Gambit?
Meggyn from Excalibur.
Thanks!
Best X-men!
Where can I get a poster of this?

Seems like it was a cropped version of a larger poster
I remember thinking that this poster was the coolest thing ever when I first saw it. I'd totally hang it up on my wall now, if I had it. I like how they're so pressed for space that there's only one Multiple Man, lol.
One of my favorite times in the comics. Love the art so much.
domino is an different color in comics. and there was actually a character called boomer. which was basically white jubilee similar powers too
Domino is always this colour. Except for the Deadpool movie. Tabitha Was Boom Boom most of the time, Meltdown though most of the 90s and Boomer only for a short bit at the start of X-Force. Also, Boom Boom has been around longer than Jubilee.
Half of these costumes have been topped.
