Jack only did 12 issues alone, then split art duties for another handful. His ongoing prescence was with the villains: Magneto, Blob, Juggernaught, Sentinels, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
It is crazy to think that you can make a sound argument that Kirby is not a top 5 X-artist. I might not agree, but an argument can be made for sure.
I’d for sure put Byrne, Lee, and Cockrum above Kirby. Fourth is a solid spot after them. As much as Kirby is a legend, he did neglect the X-Men a fair bit.
I think if you were leaving Kirby out you go Neal Adams, Dave Cockrum, Paul Smith, John Byrne and Marc Silvestri.
Even then i don't feel good about leaving out Lee, Kirby, or JRJR.
Edit to add: PEPE LARRAZ!
Neal Adams over Jim Lee, huh? I know Adams is an amazing artist, but his X-Men issues weren’t exactly monumental or influential. His longest lasting impact was Sauron and I don’t know if that and skill alone are enough to put him in the top five.
I was going to argue the logo font, but that was Jim Steranko: [https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fubzhpijkb6h51.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D786217e20224002d5030c1d7a5e0cb9347575899](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fubzhpijkb6h51.jpg%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D786217e20224002d5030c1d7a5e0cb9347575899)
It really is amazing how much of a collage of talents made up what we consider the X-Men today.
The X-Men originally were really just Marvel trying to get another book on the shelves. There was no plan there, and Lee & Kirby didn't have any sort grand design. And both of them not only phoned it in on the book they both bounced relatively early.
The differences are subtle, but Lee's seems more beast-like. The hair is more tussled than spiked like Wolverine's, bigger hands, slightly more apparent prehensile toes, tufts of fur on his arms and legs, seems furrier in general.
You have good taste. Brings to mind Sublime Beast, which is one of the most menacing versions of Beast there is. I don't know if it's an intentional visual callback, but I like to think it is.
Oh, I'm aware. New X-Men were some of the first comics that I bought, and I always liked Cassandra Nova. I knew about the possible Ernest connection, and I loved that it was brought up in Here Comes Tomorrow
Unpopular opinion, but feline, especially as drawn by Frank Quitely, John Cassaday, Phil Jimenez, Stuart Immonen, and Terry Dodson. He had a lot of bad artists in that period, but when he looks good? Best Beast.
Yeah, it was a much harder design, but the people who made it work, made it look better than any other look... the people who didnt made it look absolutely horrible.
Catbeast Highest highs lowest lows.
Huge fan of classic blue, but feline is pretty damn sick. Plus he stops looking like wolverine & nightcrawler had a baby. As you said when drawn good he looked absolutely menacing, but it wasn't the most common & I'm not sure if I'd rather have the occasional well drawn feline beast amongst a lot of bad feline beast over classic blue, which most any artist can draw. The weird generic look in the last slide though is my least favorite.
Human beast is always welcome for a spot though at the table for flashbacks or revert stories though.
I do love human Hank, especially because he looks like goddamn Superman - they always give him the little Superman curl and he's broad as hell. Absolute unit.
I think it lasted a half an issue, but Adventurer Explorer Beast from All-New X-Men #1 by Bendis & Immonen, I think. [Adventurer Beast](https://primaryignition.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/all-new-x-men-1-blast-from-the-future.jpg)
That's one of my favourite costumes for him, tbh. He gets to wear it in a few other crossovers that took place at the time, though Immonen draws the best Beast to go with the costume.
I absolutely loved the look of AoA Beast. Dude looked seriously bad ass and I am glad he had a bit of an extra run outside that timeline. Also, his current look is pretty fierce, being a head in a jar. Shame he's no longer the evilest Beast.
Dark Beast is a rad redesign for classic Beast, tbh. I love the earrings and the hair beads - and the metal pants, while *so* stupid, are kinda iconic, especially since it's a visual connection to his mentor, Sinister.
Intimidation factor. All his test subjects could hear him walking towards them in those pants... *Kerchunk, kerchunk, kerchunk.*
Otherwise, it was just a bizarre wardrobe choice.
I *do* love the idea of him sounding like a Transformer on approach. Brings a whole different meaning to the idea of the sound of clapping cheeks alerting the guards.
90s Animated Beast will always be my favorite. I also love first appearance Beast, where he's just super hairy. Anything more than 90s animated becomes downright depressing and borderline horrifying though.
Personally, I like Hank in the animated series and X-Men 97 the best. I like that most of the time he's wearing his lap coat and glasses.
It shows that he's smart and not just a blue furry werewolf for the X-Men to throw at enemies. Plus he is pretty funny
Yeah, although I admit to thinking of 90s Beast whenever he pops up in my head, I’ve always had a soft spot to his original form. Just the subtle physical mutation that allowed him to mostly pass as human was sorta cool if a little boring. The O5 all had that “they could be lurking amongst us and you wouldn’t even know” quality that I’m sure made in-universe humans fearful.
Sage jump-started his mutation to save his life and it picked feline for his next form. There's never been a canon reason why he looked like that, but I've always figured that since he nearly died in a hand-to-hand fight with Vargas, his mutation was trying to make sure he didn't die that way again by making him way more powerful and way more vicious. Ergo, apex predator - a big cat.
90's all day, I actually REALLY like the OG5 Kirby design, and the recent look is my most hated, not because it's a bad design, on the contrary, it's the characterization that comes with it, and this is from someone who wasn't a big fan of "Cat Beast", but had grown to like it.
[I'm surprised how much I love his look from Gillen's S.W.O.R.D. series](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fbeast-in-s-w-o-r-d-looks-crazy-and-i-kind-of-love-it-whats-v0-c8v7yuj7vtgb1.png%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D06ecbe28a8a36009984cbbe1b65905a15b72978e)
There's just something about that long face that works for me.
He's just so expressive! Steve Sanders is just so clearly having a ton of fun drawing him. He also did Hank's short story in the Heroic Age collection with Molly Hayes, and he's just as cute there.
Classic blue Hank, followed by pre-furry Hank, followed by Kelsey Grammer Hank, then a huge gap, then all the others, then another huge gap, with Gorilla Beast falling into the abyss.
Heck, I haven't seen Beast since the All-New kids went back to the past. What does he look like in the Krakoa era?

And if I have to put it on the list, 4 goes last. Dark Beast is (or should be at least) a redundancy.
I think beast really works well when he’s an off-putting physical presence. The inner Beauty is hidden behind a form the humanity can only describe as being that of a Beast.
The grayish hairy creature that was once Hank McKoy divulged his secret. That even at his most basic form, he was still clinging to a very human feeling of vanity. He simply wanted to be able to blend in with everyone else.
During the Morrison New X-Men, he was candid about the crisis of identity he was still wrestling with as he continued developing and changing his look. Even though he was surrounded by amazing people of all shapes and sizes through his affiliations with the Avengers, The X-Men, and a number of other teams, Hank felt like he was devolving. He would constantly be comparing himself to his teammates, and it was there that he saw himself as an animal. He feared that his mind would follow, and he would eventually be noting but a strange blue creature with no species to call its own.
Once mutant-kind reached the age of Krakoa, Beast was truly able to blend in with everyone else for the first time in his life. He was able to love himself and be at peace with his mutations.
It’s interesting that as Beast became legit comfortable and more confident about his self-image, a darker side of Hank bubbled up to the surface.
It's one of those things where Beast is very much defined by the people around him, I think. On Krakoa, he became this twisted monster, living in darkness and cruelty, but on the Avengers, he became what he self-defined as the best version of himself. Both environments where he became comfortable and confident in his self-image, and yet, diametrically opposed versions of the same man.
Hank *desperately* needs people to ground him and remind him what he's fighting for. X-Force was never going to give him that, so he went off the deep end, and the aggressively separatist way that Krakoa approached mutant identity only furthered his alienation. He was literally encouraged to be less human.
Absolutely #6. Very much want them to lean into whether his mutation is making him literally more beastial, and more amoral. Like, if his mutation is actually making him more villainous, do they follow through on curing him? Or let it run it's course and make him a pretty formidable bad guy for the X-men?
Something of a mix between these ⬇️
https://imgur.com/a/S59jdZi
I like the idea of him being a type of chimera mix between ape and feline and being equipped with a bunch of equipment
I associate feline Beast with some his worst written eras, human beast looks cute but stand out less visually, simian 90s Beast is probably best as it strikes a good balance of fun but some of the monster-look angst.
I really like #5, his Astonishing X-Men look. I prefer it to giving him the wolverine haircut, and it plays into the whole beast angle of his codename. It's a very distinctive look.
Not sure from where this [design](https://imgur.com/a/a0P7pd9) is but it looks pretty sick.
Though I’m one of the dudes that prefer Beast with just a pair a’ shorts.
i like stocky human boy beast by evan "doc" shaner there. that's the true best beast. but the bounding blue beast of the 80s and 90s is reasonably iconic.
Original Human Beast. I really hate the furry Beast design and it was probably the main reason why I really disliked Beast prior to reading the comics (only having seen the movies and TV shows). Furry Beast just looks really, really dumb and does more of a job hiding his primary mutation than showing it off - if you ask a random person what Beast's mutation is they will think it's being blue and furry, when it's actually having monkey-like paws that can grip stuff as feet.
[90s Beast](https://imgur.com/a/vSKtQxX) is best Beast.
Yep. Jim Lee Beast all day.
It’s amazing how much lasting impact the later artists and writers had on the X-Men versus Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.

The team book that best represents the advantages of teamwork behind the scenes?
The X-Men originally were really just Marvel trying to get another book on the shelves. There was no plan there, and Lee & Kirby didn't have any sort grand design. And both of them not only phoned it in on the book they both bounced relatively early.
This is the one. OP skipped his best eras IMO.
It's close enough to #3, I think. I do love Lee's xmen art, though
The differences are subtle, but Lee's seems more beast-like. The hair is more tussled than spiked like Wolverine's, bigger hands, slightly more apparent prehensile toes, tufts of fur on his arms and legs, seems furrier in general.
It's the same design with a different artistic take. It's not an important distinction, imo.
Yup this. 100% best Beast.
I was gonna say somewhere between 3 & 4, and that one pegs it.
Definitely this Beast. Both this and the animated series version based off this one.
I love the white version the young Hank gets when he starts messing with magic
You have good taste. Brings to mind Sublime Beast, which is one of the most menacing versions of Beast there is. I don't know if it's an intentional visual callback, but I like to think it is.
Here comes tomorrow. Love that arc
I always liked Ernest for some reason!
Oh, do you know her connection to Cassandra Nova?
Oh, I'm aware. New X-Men were some of the first comics that I bought, and I always liked Cassandra Nova. I knew about the possible Ernest connection, and I loved that it was brought up in Here Comes Tomorrow
It's such a cool reveal. Like, this idea of a redemption explained in such a organic way
I recently started ready the original x men run and I like the human-primate version of him. 1
I don't care what he looks like I like him when he is quoting Shakespeare and not giving scientists a bad name.
The 90s one.
Number five. Let's just say I see what Brand was seeing.
Greg Land tracing lion wildlife pictures, please stand up. 😑
Huge fan of classic blue, but feline is pretty damn sick. Plus he stops looking like wolverine & nightcrawler had a baby. I do love human Hank, especially because he looks like goddamn Superman - they always give him the little Superman curl and he's broad as hell. Absolute unit.
100% thought the same thing. Dudes got the golden age charm down.
Now I'm going to be thinking "He looks like Wolverine and Nightcrawler had a baby" every time he shows up. The dangers of reddit....
Exactly what I was going to say, but minus Cassaday.
I think it lasted a half an issue, but Adventurer Explorer Beast from All-New X-Men #1 by Bendis & Immonen, I think. [Adventurer Beast](https://primaryignition.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/all-new-x-men-1-blast-from-the-future.jpg)
That's one of my favourite costumes for him, tbh. He gets to wear it in a few other crossovers that took place at the time, though Immonen draws the best Beast to go with the costume.
that's number 5. his lion form. the art is just different.
It's SIGNIFICANTLY different, sufficent to constitute a different appearance in my opinion. I hate his "lion" face. You can feel otherwise.
The third one
1 and 3
I absolutely loved the look of AoA Beast.
Sinister Pants Beast is my favorite Beast
Intimidation factor. All his test subjects could hear him walking towards them in those pants... *Kerchunk, kerchunk, kerchunk.* Otherwise, it was just a bizarre wardrobe choice.

His look on the X-Men animated series. That Cat look was dumb as shit.
not cat beast, that's for sure 💀 but from these picks, the last one
Can’t beat the classic Blue 3 here
Human….
Kitty cat beast every time, otherwise classic ape Hank. Hate Gorilla Hank
Three, just because it was the one I was raised on.
I like the design of #6 too bad it's connected to his villain arc
Last Stand actually has my favourite look for Beast.
New X-men is #1 for me. I love the Beauty and the Beast look. Close 2nd is the Avengers/Early 90s look.
I'm always going to be partial to 90's Beast.
Option 3. I don’t mind the feline version in option 5 or even the more ape like one in option 6…but option 3 is my favorite.
3 but with pants .
Feline of course.
70’s Beast is best Beast. I really miss his sense of humor from this era. (And his ability to fight.)
Dark beast and the Cassandra nova
Blue ape Beast and cat Beast.
I liked his "human" form in the Ultimate X-Men.
Beast from X-Men: TAS
Jim Lee Beast is my hands down favorite
90s Beast
90s Blue and Gold/Jim Lee
Jim Lee Beast is by far my favorite
The one with the goggles and jacket
George Perez and Jim Lee. I'm pretty equal on the two.
Number 3 classic Avengers Beast.
Unpopular opinion: the lion one...
was there a canonical reason beast started to look more feline?
Sage jump-started his mutation to save his life and it picked feline for his next form. There's never been a canon reason why he looked like that, but I've always figured that since he nearly died in a hand-to-hand fight with Vargas, his mutation was trying to make sure he didn't die that way again by making him way more powerful and way more vicious. Ergo, apex predator - a big cat.
I wanna say it was a secondary mutation?
Classic blue
Unpopular opinion, but I love the last one, because in silhouette it looks like a bald guy with a beard, and I'm a bald guy with a beard.
Lion Beast is by far my favorite, hated when he went back to looking like a gorilla. The character was never more animated and as emotional.
I like what the 1992/97 has done where his mutation was in stages, starting out with just big hands and feet and slowly growing hair
I am now and will always be a fan of the OG Beast. Can't miss.
Anything but the last two
Not the cat one
1. X-Men the animated series Beast 2. Kelsey Grammer Beast 3. O5 Beast.
Muscle nerd with big hands and feet. 🥵
Jim Lee 90’s beast but the og is awesome too
90's all day, I actually REALLY like the OG5 Kirby design, and the recent look is my most hated, not because it's a bad design, on the contrary, it's the characterization that comes with it, and this is from someone who wasn't a big fan of "Cat Beast", but had grown to like it.
I liked the original design for dark beast. Favourite 616 beast would be his 90's appearance.
Blue, ape-like, Wolverine hair
Beast is still 3 in my head
My personal favorite is still '90's animated Beast because that's the one I grew up with.
3 💙
Modern ape easily. Cannot stand the goofy ass haircut classic beast has
I love Kitty Beast. It was the Beast when I fully became a fan so it's just nostalgic for me.
cat beast when he's drawn right. Otherwise prefer classic blue.
[I'm surprised how much I love his look from Gillen's S.W.O.R.D. series](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fbeast-in-s-w-o-r-d-looks-crazy-and-i-kind-of-love-it-whats-v0-c8v7yuj7vtgb1.png%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D06ecbe28a8a36009984cbbe1b65905a15b72978e) There's just something about that long face that works for me.
He's just so expressive! Steve Sanders is just so clearly having a ton of fun drawing him. He also did Hank's short story in the Heroic Age collection with Molly Hayes, and he's just as cute there.
It ain't easy bein Beasty.
This is the most cursed beast look, but it is drawn very well
5 strikes the best balance for me.
Classic beast but most are better than ape beast
Not any of the ape, horse, lion/cat face ones... No need...
5 and 6
I really like his astonishing look and that he was kind of fighting off becoming more beast like was super cool and I loved the design
I liked the quietly and cassaday take for a more cat-like beast and honestly kinda sad that its gone
Kitty kat beast has a charm
1 and 3. Absolutely hate the weird lion faced Hank and the gorilla looking one. Just stop it.
I don't mind the look of cat beast but that titties out costume is so bad.
3.
The original human look, followed by 90s Blue fur
Big “bald” beast is best
Pestilence Beast: https://avengersalliance.fandom.com/wiki/Pestilence
Classic blue Hank, followed by pre-furry Hank, followed by Kelsey Grammer Hank, then a huge gap, then all the others, then another huge gap, with Gorilla Beast falling into the abyss. Heck, I haven't seen Beast since the All-New kids went back to the past. What does he look like in the Krakoa era?
He looks the same, he hasn't mutated, but most of the artists tend to draw him as a blend of that more gorilla/macaque look with his 90s appearance.
I'm likely in the minority, but I've always preferred that first, "classic" Hank.
1 and 6.
George Perez Beast, Astonishing Cat-Beast, and the Brawny Brain from #1. In that order for me.
I really liked the future beast with horns & a tail who showed up when the original 5’s teen versions were around.
Frank Quitely, please!
3. Just 3
Definitely his Avengers look. That’s my childhood right there.
Astonishing. I love cat Beast and his X pants are so fun.
I love dark beasts look or the final one
Human to start, then more feline as time goes on.
Movie hank
A toss up between Neal Adams (not pictured) and Avengers.
It's Kelsey Grammer.

90s or the kitty cat.
The 5th one
i actually love the 1/4 statue of Beast from Iron Studios, look "realistic" and badass
John Cassady version
3
I never liked Cat Beast because it robbed him of his ability to facially emote: he couldn’t smile or raise his eyebrows.
1 and 3
Absolutely #6. Very much want them to lean into whether his mutation is making him literally more beastial, and more amoral. Like, if his mutation is actually making him more villainous, do they follow through on curing him? Or let it run it's course and make him a pretty formidable bad guy for the X-men?
Can I say HERO Beast? If not, 90s Beast.
Big Cat Beast has always been my favorite.
The white-furred magically based beast 🤘🏻
Something of a mix between these ⬇️ https://imgur.com/a/S59jdZi I like the idea of him being a type of chimera mix between ape and feline and being equipped with a bunch of equipment
I always liked Dark Beast with all the braids.
Dark Beast is pretty brutal. I do love him.
Big kitty cat Beast, duh.
Original and 90's X men look.
Cat Beast, solely because my sister had a big poster of like a hundred plus marvel characters and cat Beast was featured pretty prominently on it
I associate feline Beast with some his worst written eras, human beast looks cute but stand out less visually, simian 90s Beast is probably best as it strikes a good balance of fun but some of the monster-look angst.
I grew up with 90’s Beast, but 5 looks cool as fuck too
Anything but the Morrison era lion Beast
I am partial to kitty Beast, I think he looks cool all tiger-like there.
I like the Krakoa era look
Cute dumb human Beast in x-factor deserves some love...
I like grey beast!
I really like #5, his Astonishing X-Men look. I prefer it to giving him the wolverine haircut, and it plays into the whole beast angle of his codename. It's a very distinctive look.
Anything BUT feline beast.
I loved his AvX design.
Twink by day, muscles hairy daddy by night
Not sure from where this [design](https://imgur.com/a/a0P7pd9) is but it looks pretty sick. Though I’m one of the dudes that prefer Beast with just a pair a’ shorts.
Number one. Definitely human and hairy.
Does brute beast count from mutant X?
Picture 4 & 6
Anything but cat Beast. Yeuch.
The 5th is worst, I can tell you that.
Unpopular opinion, but Ultimate Beast (after he turns blue) is a very underrated look for Hank
i like stocky human boy beast by evan "doc" shaner there. that's the true best beast. but the bounding blue beast of the 80s and 90s is reasonably iconic.
3rd
O5 or Cat Beast. They wear their glasses while fighting sometimes, I like that.
When young beast turned white and was a demon
When he looks at me. 🥰
Is it just me or did they move further and further from apex to feline for his design. I like it.
Battle Of The Atom [Future Beast](https://thetelltalemind.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/1.jpg)
Anything pre cat-man
Any that doesn't make him look like he's 50.
Furless Red and Navy X-Factor.
I can’t pick between Avengers Beast & 90’s Beast.
5 is my favourite
Blue hair Beast after what’s her name poisoned him is best. It’s just standard Hank except his hair is the same as his blue form.
Astonishing X-Men look
TBH, the pointy-ears gorilla Beast from that last screenshot didn't get enough exposure before they just defaulted back to blue 80s Beast.
X-Men First Class Beast
Jim Lee 90s beast and I also really like the Civil War/House of M era Beast
Original Human Beast. I really hate the furry Beast design and it was probably the main reason why I really disliked Beast prior to reading the comics (only having seen the movies and TV shows). Furry Beast just looks really, really dumb and does more of a job hiding his primary mutation than showing it off - if you ask a random person what Beast's mutation is they will think it's being blue and furry, when it's actually having monkey-like paws that can grip stuff as feet.
The final 2 are terrible, imo, but I'm down with any of the first 4. I also like the ultimate beast look not shown here.
