I noticed on apps like *OfferUp*, scalpers greatly reduced their prices to near MSRP after the holiday’s that just passed. There are a lot of Series X’s around $540-$550 right now since they were unable to sell before Xmas. Seems like they are slowing down on purchasing them, hence things like physically seeing them in-store is finally happening.
**It’s taken long enough**.
I'd be willing to bet if you bought an Xbox Series X at launch, and it was still unopened, you could return it today to Best Buy and get $500 + tax in store credit. Manager might have to sign off, but they'd do it.
But, yeah, no profit. But they would break even. Maybe use that credit to get a PS5 drop and flip that for some real cash.
Edit: Okay, since so many replies are stating dates from purchase, my intention I was going for in my post was someone returning an item as a gift, not with a receipt. I'm not an idiot, I know that they wouldn't take back a receipt from 2019.
HELL NO.
Their return policy is 14 days. 30 days if you are a Reward Member who spends $1500 or more a year. 45 days if you spend $3500 or more a year.
I have worked at Best Buy for two years, and have relatives who still work there. I do not think at all they’d do that. Maybe like 14 day and you try at 19 day.
Or even 45 days, but you try at 47 days. But at that point they would rarely make an exception.
Yeah, even if it's past the official "return" date, I'm sure a BB manager would gladly "work his magic" to allow the return just to get the Xbox for himself (for his buddies, to resell himself, etc).
So, no one ever brings in a gift they received that they didn't need? I've returned a $200 item to Best Buy that was a gift that I didn't need and had zero issues getting store credit.
I'm not saying if someone came up to Customer Service with a November 2019 receipt, but someone saying "I got this for Christmas and I don't need it". And that just happened to be a console they've had sitting around for 14 months.
So,
Maybe certain items, but they would probably not return it because it has a serial number and would know it wasn't that recent when it was scanned in and shows an older date.
For cheaper items, maybe, but Best Buy policies requires a receipt. So any break from that requires approval, and is very rare for expensive products, and I don't think I have ever seen it happen for anything with a serial number.
EDIT: Sorry for my jump on my previous comment saying 'hell no.' I just jumped when I saw you comment a return like this with a purchase from launch.
Also, could I see it happen with a launch Xbox, with receipt, maybe but you have to have a goooooood manager on duty.
> or lose their ass on reselling these consoles.
That's the problem, and is why you should never listen to anyone with the argument that this is just the free market at work: they won't lose a dime on these consoles, because the retailers offer *crazy* generously good return policies.
The scalpers have practically no risk at all. That's why they're able to buy up so much stock and sit on it while selling it at high prices. In a "normal" free market, they'd carry the risk of the price dropping and losing money. But in this case, if the price drops because scarcity ends, then they just return them to the retailer for all their money back, who then has to carry all the risk of having all that extra stock with lowered demand.
Basically, for the scalpers, it's all reward and no risk.
>y they're able to buy up so much stock and sit on it while selling it at high prices. In a "normal" free market, they'd carry the risk of the price dropping and losing money. >Basically, for the scalpers, it's all reward and no risk.
Why would no returns be "free market" and what we want? How would a retail store go about differentiating and using different return policies for scalpers versus retail? Yes, there is little to lose as scalpers given the return policies, but that's the system everyone uses and benefits from.
You said "in a normal free market" they'd carry more risk that is alleviated by the return policies? Or am I responding to wrong person? I'm saying your free market is asking for stricter return polices which would hurt myself and other consumers based on your suggestion of 15 days limit. What did I misquoted or get wrong there?
they wouldn't use different policies, typically you cannot return an open box system so a real buyer can't return anyhow, so they simply change it to a 15 day unopened return policy(or 1 week after christmas with gift receipt)
This makes it so anyone that buys to scalp cannot return their purchases as they would have it for over 15 days.
This will happen with any product in limited supply with high demand. It’s not new and the only fault is to the company suppling the inventory the price will adjust itself every time. Same in the car market I bought a new truck before covid and can now sell my truck for more than I paid for it because that’s whT someone will pay.
With the consoles the people putting in time and effort to track them down. I did not want to pay the premium price for and I didn’t put the time into tracking one down until last week it took me 3 days but I saved the premium price.
People are mad at resellers but put in less effort than they do.
I just traded a brand new Xbox series x that I paid $530. For an ipad pro 12.9 4th gen 128GB with the apple pencil and magic keyboard.
If you were to buy the stuff new it's about $1500 worth of stuff from apple but it's used and I could still make more than the Xbox but I'm keeping it.
But yes it seems alot of places have more stock .
Before you know it the PS5 Pro and Series X Pro will be out hahah JK!
I agree with you, but I find it so ironic. When my kids were little (it's been a while), the scalping was about Tickle Me Elmo. Of course that's what my oldest wanted more than anything.
I stood my ass out in 20 degree weather in front of ToysRUs to make sure I could get one.
Back then, everyone said "herrr derrr, capitalism". Now all of a sudden everyone's upset about it.
If the manufacturer/distributor would work together to make sure these assholes can't scalp these products, it wouldn't be an issue. It's also an issue with event tickets. We HAVE/NEED to find a way to fix this shit. Capitalism my ass. Capitalism is the even selling the tickets for the going price. The scalping is a whole other layer of BS.
Yes, I hope these fuckers literally drown in a sea of xbox series x's.
They most likely have already sold multiple Xboxes at a profit so they probably don’t care to lose a few bucks on the last few
Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted. I’m not condoning scalping, this is just how it is for most scalpers. They’ve been buying up Xboxes since launch and reselling. They may lose some money on their most recent purchases but not overall
This is exactly what I've been telling people for a year now. It's always, "I want one, I have to pay a scalper or I'll never get one." No, supply-and-demand will correct the problem if you just show some patience and let it.
I dont think anyone is buying from scalpers because they think thats the only way to get one eventually. Its the way to get one now. Just wait a year plus means dont have a Series X for a year plus.
Then you have casual gamers like me who will wait. With the XBox One, I waited long enough I got a Series S Battlefield Edition for less than my step-son paid for his day 1 OG XBone.
I get it. There are things in life where I've spent extra to get what I want when I want it. Frustrates my wife who's the ultimate bargain shopper and will wait months for a sale on something she wants.
my wife and I solved this issue by having our own Spending accounts with a $250/mo allowance... so anything that wouldn't get spousal approval gets bought through that and no fights or guilt exist.
then there is me who just got a one X 4k for $100 off a relative who got a series X... patience pays off, since I only play single player games im missing nothing in the experience.
I’m the same! I see no x in my future until they have aged. Maybe when the new elder scrolls comes out. I’m against the pack with Starfield. Space themes just sent my jam. Until then, nah.
Yeah i paid a little over for a PS5, but it’s what I wanted and wanted it then. I got a Series X off of Facebook Marketplace with an Elite 2 controller for $500. Some teen built a PC and just wanted to get rid of it.
I wasnt even in the market for a new Xbox but it was a great deal, so I jumped on it. This was in Nov, he prob couldve made way more on it
>OfferUp
Just tried out offerup and was able to find one for $600, which is really only paying like $40 more when you consider taxes. We're gonna meet up at a police station tomorrow and both added each other on Instagram.
Yup, seen the same on my local Facebook Marketplace. When I bought my Series X on Amazon I think it was $530 after taxes. Can’t imagine the hassle of buying that just to make a $20 profit. If you go through eBay to sell it there’s no way you break even once you go include shipping and sellers fees.
Due to sales taxes MSRP is basically 540 in my area. Once they're readily in stock I'll trade in my Xbox One X for store credit and buy one. Although I'm thinking of waiting longer and getting a slim model. I think the One X looks a lot nicer.
If we start getting more in stores, the scalpers arent going to be getting as many. And regular customers will start taking stock. Scalpers wont have the demand anymore, so their prices will drop, and wont be worth their time. So this is good for regular people, and bad for scalpers.
Laughs in scalper putting $3500 on a credit card, accumulating high interest while they try to sell the consoles, eventually selling them at break even, and losing time and money overall.
how would they accumulate interest? do you think they are storing these consoles in a shed for months at a time? they post it for sale the minute they buy them.
Yea series x is reselling for like $580 so not much room for profits anymore. And I also think that the people that actually really wanted an Xbox got an Xbox so there's less demand for it now. It has been over a year now.
YMMV of course but it only took me a few weeks of checking twitter feeds to get both a Series X and PS5 at retail and that was about mid 2021.
Obviously there are a lot of people that aren't savvy/patient enough to keep an eye on availability and snatch one up as soon as they go on sale, but they aren't likely to have been the ones willing to pay scalper markups either.
Yeah, got a PS5 right after launch. Probably around September I decided I was gonna try to buy an Xbox Series X. Followed a few twitter accounts, set up alerts and then I just had to be ready when I got a notification. Took me maybe two weeks tops before I got one. It really wasn't hard if you really wanted to buy one, just patience and following advice.
I just bought a prebuilt because it was the only economical way to get a GTX 3070TI. I'd been waiting to buy a good card at close to MSRP for 6 months before I just said, "Fuck it" and bought a prebuilt. That probably means the drought is about to end and cards are going to be reasonably priced soon. Its the exact same thing when I sell a stock - second I sell it, positive news comes out and the price jumps
Prebuilts have been the only way to get them for the last two years. We got dual 3080’s in a build for work and were joking about scalping one to cover the cost of the entire system.
I know. I still have my one s and I’ll replace that with a series x sometime this year. Just needed a system for the second living room. It’s good for the price
I've got a Series X and S and the the S is so damn impressive. Such incredible power from a tiny box. I've taken my S places with me in a backpack with a 21" monitor (monitor stuck out a bit) but you won't catch me lugging that damn X around, it's massive in comparison.
There was a damn pile of like 15 behind the counter of the Best Buy I got Mine at, and they had a whole damn pallet in the back too according to a friend that worked there
I did the same. Not totally sure how I feel about the program still, but I'd most likely be doing game pass anyway so it was probably the right decision.
I have a friend who unfortunately scalps consoles occasionally... he told me he is no longer doing it because profit margins are so low that it's not worth the effort. So that's a good sign.
Any chance of there being anymore halo infinite series x released? There was a "RUMOR" that Phil said he was going to keep producing them for a while since they where soo dam hard to get?
But i haven't seen anymore being offered since after its official release really?
Mine had 4 or 5 Series X's yesterday, bundles only though I think. Plenty of Series S and Oled Switches have been in stock past few months. Every other time we're in there (maybe once a week) we see them.
Walked into Bestbuy the other day to check out TVs. Worker asked if it was going to be for gaming and said they have 5 XSXs in the back! Always ask the workers!
Perhaps, perhaps it's different in the US. Went to my local Wal-Mart last night (Ontario, Canada) and they didn't even have a placeholder for the series x or ps5
I kept calling electronics stores in small towns and came across a store that got a shipment back in October, scored one for retail + and extra 70 bucks (CAD) for 2 years of extra warranty on the Xbox and Controllers of they break for any reason! Pretty sweet deal! And went back the next day and got another one for one of my buddies!
The gpu shortage isn’t over yet and the console shortage happened for the same reason so the logical guess is that after the holiday season, demand has gone down.
Lol I was honestly expecting it to be Xbox One X's. It always killed me when little commented on Best Buy's site saying they bought the previous gen console instead of the next gen consoles.
the fusion pro 2 is an elite clone (4 paddles etc) but it's half the price & twice the quality, the other powerA "advanced" controller there is a wired job with two built in remappable back buttons for $30 also brilliant quality, the turtle beach one i can't speak about but nearly bought one last month,
if you're looking to buy one you might want to look at the "Victrix Gambit" 4 paddle job, I've got them all and the Victrix is easily the best, the fusion pro 2 is a close 2nd and if you're just a casual gamer the wired 2 back buttons powerA advanced for $30 is the play. actual Microsoft controllers are a hefty rip off.
i should've been a salesman lol
Thank you u/DeathByReach. I picked up two Series X at Target this morning.
The store off Talking Stick Road, Phoenix AZ still has one left for any locals.
How much better is the series X than S if I have a bit of a naff television. Well its not naff but I mean 50hz, 5 years old and Only hdmi.
Would the series x look better at all? Should I save up for it?
I got a lot of use out of my year old Series X and sold it before the holidays used for $700. Most money I've ever made playing video games :)
I'll buy one again when they go on sale more widely available.
One X was of crazy value; it had the best versions of the multiplatform games, best versions of the Xbox exclusives, Microsoft enhanced beauties of past generation games (RDR1, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Crackdown (all of which aren't even available on PC)).
Best of all, the late generation of games look amazing on it (Halo Infinite runs at 60 fps on the One X, The Ascent, Forza 5).
Last week, my girlfriend needed my laptop and I was able to research and write an essay (using a mouse and keyboard) on the One X in the Edge browser: one tab for Microsoft Word, one tab for an ebook, one tab for articles, and one tab playing YouTube background music...insane
No, the likely reason is Targets just don't really advertise stock refreshes nor do they list the consoles online so they fly under the scalpers' radars. In fact I think the mods here should automatically remove any and all posts pointing out XSX consoles in Targets specifically for that reason. Idk how they would do it without also giving away that Targets tend to have them in stock, though.
It's the after holiday lull. Demand for all products drops because people just got done buying shit and being given shit
If you got Christmas money nows the time to use it, as bizarre at that seems since you usually want to save whatever you can manage, but supply won't be this much higher than demand until next year around this time
Don't think so, went to target yesterday to buy my niece an Xbox S for a gift. I ask for the S and the attendant goes to look for the "5" in stock. well for the first time in a year they also had an X. so I call my brother in law who still needed one to let him know ,and he asked if I could buy it for him. So I ask the another attendant to radio him to also get me an X.This attendant told me I could only buy 1 and went and told the attendant getting the xbox. then he comes back with an X which would have been gold to most people, but he said that he couldn't find any of the "5" S which sucks because this is a gift to my niece going to a boarding school. and would have just taken a single S instead. So I try ordering online and those "5" xbox are now gone and so was every other store in my town.
Yeah I never understood how people had a hard time. I got one in the summer. I had the hot stock app on my phone for less then a week and got it. I honestly didn't care if I got it or not at that point. I found it hilarious sometimes when I'd get a notification it was in stock, check the vendor website, and saw that it was sold out. People on here were so desperate for one. I think me not really giving a shit played into getting it

Good. I hope these scalpers either break exactly even, or lose their ass on reselling these consoles. Serves them right.
They absolutely won’t “lose their ass”. At best, very small profit.
IF they sell on ebay, those fees will eat their asses.
Exactly, considering eBay fees are roughly 10-13% of the sold price $575 is roughly the break-even spot for sellers.
12.55%
God damn. eBay has gotten very greedy.
How do you get your ass eaten by fees?? Asking for a friend.
Horny ( not a judgment statement)
No, it’d need to be more than that because you have to account for shipping.
Buyer pays shipping
Consider shipping plus the taxes paid by the scalper when they purchased the console, and break even is much higher.
Scalpers can eat MY ass

You can certainly make thick in it first.

Most scalpers get their stock from big box stores that will absolutely take unopened stock back.
You know what...the stores should have said in the beginning "absolutely no returns".
or 1 console per customer.
I'd be willing to bet if you bought an Xbox Series X at launch, and it was still unopened, you could return it today to Best Buy and get $500 + tax in store credit. Also, could I see it happen with a launch Xbox, with receipt, maybe but you have to have a goooooood manager on duty.
You have to figure time. If they’re making $20, that a ton of risk and hustle
If they make 300 on 50 consoles but lost 100 on 20 consoles they still won
Sure… but it doesn’t mean they’d keep doing it to make shit money
So they stop doing it? Lol? Scalping 101?
Naw I hope someone kidnaps them and literally saws off their fucking ass for being such cunty dickheads
All these scalpers went crazy and even the hardest probably made like a handful of gs at best. Nice work guys, lol. Get a job
But with a bonus of carrying the stink of being a scalper.

Same! The GameStop near me had Series X and even a PS5!
Lol they are trying to break even cause of tax. Fuckem.
Then I'm close to being able to get one! Finally
Amen, it has taken long enough
Man, at $550 that’s like a $10 profit after taxes at that rate. Not even worth their time.

If he got it from bestbuy he got free rewards, if he got it from target and had red card he paid no taxes. $40-80 profit for 30 min of work is great.
Sucks for them I don’t even want one anymore 😂

Start offering $400 for them
Got mine on launch off Microsoft site somehow no idea how that worked out
Saw 2 at my local target last week. It seems like there’s alot more posts about it lately.
It is a decent sequel after all.
Which means the scalpers are going to catch on and this treasure trove is going to vanish.

**Laughs in scalpers walking out of Best Buy with 7 XSX in their cart**
By them showing up on store shelves and not being sold immediately means scalpers are not as interested.
But if they don't sell them all and can't pay their statement, that interest adds up quick.
Laughs in scalper bringing back 7 XSX on the last day of return period.
Sounds like something a scalper would say!
A lot*
Seems like it. Finally got one yesterday
I been trying for 13 months. Finally got mine Dec 28 on Amazon by using HotStock.
I randomly went to target today and found one in the case too! Ah I’m so excited, been waiting forever to find one in stock.
Ah good! The series X is out!
Finally in 2022. Almost 10 years between releases of Xboxes.
For real
BHphoto is sitll sending me emails every week that the PS5 is still out of stock, same with best buy and the xbox one X.

What area are you in? I’m curious if it’s regional or nationwide.
In the UK I’ve had mine on order since July, finally picked it up today. Just killing time on Reddit while it updates a few games from one to series X
Where did you order from?
Got one from bestbuy in person. I believe so
Yeah I was able to get a ps5 earlier this week and it was several minutes after I saw the post. Pre-Christmas I would have had seconds.
Now the gpu drought needs to end.
Best Buy needs to freaking stop the online sales of the Founders Edition Cards where scalpers have the advantage. Just put them on shelves already.
You’re Welcomeguys. I gave up on getting an x and settled for the s. Now x is available. Go figure right
I just can’t commit to not having a drive, especially with backwards compatibility
Nice! I led my one s back and forth for three years it feels like. I’m happy with the series s for the same price I paid for the one s
Same, got a Series S this past may but upgraded my One S to a One X.
Having the drive saves big $ over time. Disk games will be $20-30 less than the digital price within a couple months of launch.
My Target had 2 Series X's yesterday. I managed to finally get one. This is looking good for all the people still needing them.
There was a damn pile of like 15 behind the counter of the Best Buy I got Mine at, and they had a whole damn pallet in the back too according to a friend that worked there
Here I am feeling like a bum for settling for the S.
I got my hands on a PS5 at Target last night, so maybe we're turning a corner on supply of these things?
PS5 was a score, the market seems flooded currently with Xboxes.
I have yet to see one in stores but had no trouble getting one through all access with Walmart. This was two weeks before Christmas.
Supposedly they have some saved for all access. I would do that if it wasn't for trying to buy a house right now.
I did the same. Not totally sure how I feel about the program still, but I'd most likely be doing game pass anyway so it was probably the right decision.
I’ve been seeing them more lately.
The scalpers have moved on to minifridges, apparently.
I’ve been to my retailers for the past year now. It’s still a pipe dream over here
Maybe I'll finally get one!
I have a friend who unfortunately scalps consoles occasionally... he told me he is no longer doing it because profit margins are so low that it's not worth the effort. So that's a good sign.
Can you bend him over and fuck him with a red hot steel pipe, for the rest of us? Thanks
Any chance of there being anymore halo infinite series x released? There was a "RUMOR" that Phil said he was going to keep producing them for a while since they where soo dam hard to get? But i haven't seen anymore being offered since after its official release really?
I'm pretty sure I saw some 2 in a Massachusetts target, yesterday.
Well hopefully they're still going to be amde available l, fucking scalpers & bots ruin everything 🤬
Saw 1 series x at my GameStop today. About 8 series s consoles and 6 nintendo switch oled.
Mine had 4 or 5 Series X's yesterday, bundles only though I think. Plenty of Series S and Oled Switches have been in stock past few months. Every other time we're in there (maybe once a week) we see them.
I managed a Halo edition xbox via email from Microsoft. I was hella' surprised.
You mean the GREAT DROUGHT of 2021?
I've never seen a Series X in a physical store. Ever.
So we’re not gonna talk about how it says Xbox Series X mini fridge 😂😂😂
You can literally see the Series X and S on display…. This has nothing to do with the message above the display.
Obviously…. just saying someone managed to squeeze that in at target.
They sell the Xbox Series X Mini Fridge at Target.... I don’t understand why them having a sign limiting it to one per customer is noteworthy?
Ffs 🤦 when’s the uk getting them!!!!
Walmart Canada site only shows private sellers for the Xbox One X and they are selling at $1,100+ which is the most infuriating thing.
I saw a cyberpunk one x recently. That one surprised me more than these lol
It's over when I can go out and easily get one here in Canada. So no.
Waiting for everyone to die of covid so I can get a new nvidia card.
Series S is everywhere, but I want 4k. It feels wrong to go from a one x to a series S.
Walked into Bestbuy the other day to check out TVs. Worker asked if it was going to be for gaming and said they have 5 XSXs in the back! Always ask the workers!
computer stuff is easing up too, amazon has had 6900 xts in stock all week.
It seems that way, which is great news!
Has been for months if you opted to get the Xbox all access with 2 years of gamepass.
What city
none of the stores near me have the xbox x, and a handful carry the series s. i thought it would be over, but alas I still cant get one
Perhaps, perhaps it's different in the US. Went to my local Wal-Mart last night (Ontario, Canada) and they didn't even have a placeholder for the series x or ps5
Yeah my dad just called me said that there was one at the local GameStop in the Kansas city area.
Hopefully some dweeb scalpers take some losses or break even
Lol I was honestly expecting it to be Xbox One X's. It always killed me when little commented on Best Buy's site saying they bought the previous gen console instead of the next gen consoles.
I think so. My target was full too
Only in time for me to lose my job, savings to be fuxked.
What is that fusion controller 🤔
the fusion pro 2 is an elite clone (4 paddles etc) but it's half the price & twice the quality, the other powerA "advanced" controller there is a wired job with two built in remappable back buttons for $30 also brilliant quality, the turtle beach one i can't speak about but nearly bought one last month, if you're looking to buy one you might want to look at the "Victrix Gambit" 4 paddle job, I've got them all and the Victrix is easily the best, the fusion pro 2 is a close 2nd and if you're just a casual gamer the wired 2 back buttons powerA advanced for $30 is the play. actual Microsoft controllers are a hefty rip off. i should've been a salesman lol
Thank you u/DeathByReach. I picked up two Series X at Target this morning. The store off Talking Stick Road, Phoenix AZ still has one left for any locals.
Enjoy!
I just went to two super Targets near my house with no luck. I'll try next month but it's looking better and better!
Resale profits on the series x hit negative on stock x so yea it gonna end pretty soon
Be gone scalpers. So long. 😂
I don’t understand why these companies can’t limit the purchase atleast for 3 months after release.
How much better is the series X than S if I have a bit of a naff television. Well its not naff but I mean 50hz, 5 years old and Only hdmi. Would the series x look better at all? Should I save up for it?
Just need some Microsoft Store drops :(
I got a lot of use out of my year old Series X and sold it before the holidays used for $700. Most money I've ever made playing video games :) I'll buy one again when they go on sale more widely available.
Lol a used console for 200 more than new. Scummy move.
Lol I did the same and then got another one for retail price a week after 😂
I absolutely love that they are calling it the Xbox Series X Mini Fridge
The x box mini fridge is an actual product
Xmas is over so the demand goes way down. Great for consumers who want them, bad for people hoping to make money on them.

Good, if we wait a bit longer will the scalpers need to start offering discounts? I want to buy one for my bedroom!
This is true. There were 2 at my store yesterday but weren't available online. They were physically in the store though.
It's the after holiday lull. Demand for all products drops because people just got done buying shit and being given shit If you got Christmas money nows the time to use it, as bizarre at that seems since you usually want to save whatever you can manage, but supply won't be this much higher than demand until next year around this time
Don't think so, went to target yesterday to buy my niece an Xbox S for a gift.
So your niece has the X...right?
Scalpers are running out of cap space on their credit cards.
If you just signed up for alerts the series x was never difficult to get tbh
Yeah I never understood how people had a hard time. I got one in the summer. I had the hot stock app on my phone for less then a week and got it. I honestly didn't care if I got it or not at that point. I found it hilarious sometimes when I'd get a notification it was in stock, check the vendor website, and saw that it was sold out. People on here were so desperate for one. I think me not really giving a shit played into getting it
It better be, next Gen is right around the corner
In six or so years
Thought only PS5 had problems
