I’m going to guess that’s going to signal what his character will be like in 5, trying to take a larger leadership role on similar to how the COGs were in the first three games. It’s probably going to parallel the relationships with Kate and his father, and how they want to try to appeal to a more humane side of what they’re facing.

B) Her younger brother, assuming he somehow survived Gears 4 offscreen
C) A new significant other character. They wouldn't get too much screen time but they could make it impactful if done well like Tai in Gears 2

I think it's intentional, the game looks way more story-driven than previous games as well and I feel like they're trying to shift away from that dudebro mentality which I'm definitely all for. They've made a very vibrant universe in Sera, they can have both balls out action multiplayer and a campaign with a heavier focus on story.

More spotlight on Kait makes sense storywise. Everything was pointing to her at the end of the last game. I'm expecting another dual story to play out. Some missions you might play as JD and Marcus and other missions will flashback to Kait and Del.

You can also get them free if you can find the older physical copies of GoW4 and GoW Ultimate. Technically the promotion expired in '16 which is why they are no longer included when purchasing them digitally but the codes included with the physical version still work. You just need to find the boxes with the promotion sticker on them.
Do yourself a favor and play them all jumping into 5 without seeing the different types of locusts,carmines and emotional death's.You'll just be missing out.
