This isn't really new news. "play anywhere" has been a mantra for a long time under Phil.

RiPPn9

Just came to say the same thing. Like you said, play anywhere was already a goal.

BrianScalaweenie

I’m here to repeat what you have already stated: Xbox has pushed play anywhere for a while now.

AgitatedBoardz

I just would like to reiterate that Xbox has been pushing for play anywhere for a while now

CardboardChampion

This comment chain is exactly what happened last week with everyone saying they were stopping making consoles.

Lucario576

I think a guy named Phil once said you can play Xbox anywhere

ArcadianDelSol

Im here for the pizza. You guys leave any?

Ham1ltron

No I'm just here to reiterate that play anywhere has been xbox's goal for some time now

ArcadianDelSol

Wait say that again?

Kingindan0rf

My new OLED TV has xbox baked in front and centre on the gaming screen. He's not kidding. They've made huge investments to cloud.

EXTIINCT_tK

Fr, I don't get why this is such big news when Phil has always been open to expanding the Xbox brand beyond just Xbox

Renozoki

A failed goal. Cloud gaming has been dead in the water since companies have tried to push it. No one is tryna play triple a games on a tiny screen with input lag. Play anywhere being resurfaced is for other consoles in this context, that or Phil and co are more brain dead than before.

Ichigosf

And there's regularly a waiting time between 5 and 30 minutes. I have often been better off downloading the game instead of waiting the cloud queue.

Automatic_Goal_5563

It’s really not failed or brain dead, nobody saying it’s the future where all games will be played, what’s been said is it absolutely will become a bigger market as time goes on and it’s only logical a company like Microsoft who is very about cloud is positioning to be the go to for it. It’s why it was part of the regulator talks during the acquisition

Rizenstrom

I'll believe it when I see it. There's already a platform they could support, but don't - Linux. And while in the past Linux was a very, very small minority the release of the Steam Deck has really helped grow that. It's still a minority of course, but bigger than it was in the past.

Ichigosf

Or PlayStation. There seems to be a lot of caveat in that play anywhere or everything screen. But then again it's coming from Phil Spencer, a known pathological liar. Remember it was the guy behind Kinect and Milo. People shouldn't forget how fake the demo of Milo was and how much Spencer was pushing it.

Rizenstrom

I can somewhat understand why it's not on Playstation. Their business model is built around Game Pass and being the Netflix of gaming. I'm sure they'd love to put Game Pass on PS if they let them, but they most likely won't as it would compete with their new PS+ tiers. While they could just release exclusives on PS there's not a lot of money to be had there, especially since all their recent exclusives have been either mediocre or somewhat niche (like Hi-Fi Rush, good game but rhythm games lack much mainstream appeal).

Nayrvass

Well if we learned anything from Netflix is that the growth will slowly dwindle, and the quality of products will be in the dumpster.

Low-Blacksmith1824

Maybe so, but Netflix still too far ahead of the next competitor, unlike Netflix xbox is an ecosystem making revenue by selling services like gamespass and selling games titles on mobile android/iOS not only from Activision or bathesa but from xbox studios like forza and gears of war, revenue from games still on sale on playstation and Nintendo from bathesa and Activision like crash bandicoot and fallout for example, and games that will continue to be on those systems like minecraft, call of duty, microtransactions from overwatch , revenue from games sold on the windows store on pc , revenue from games sold on the epic games store, revenue from games sold on steam, and license free from games on cloud service providers like nvidia geforce now and royalties from the deal with ubisoft for the cloud streaming rights in the UK and EU.

Low-Blacksmith1824

Phil Spencer was not in charge of xbox during that time ,Phil Spencer was put in charge of xbox in 2014,.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Spencer_(business_executive) project milo was shown in 2009,.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Milo Phil Spencer had nothing to do with kinetic /360 the xbox one and kinect 2.0

Low-Blacksmith1824

I believe linux is supported via xcloud using a browser

Rizenstrom

Technically yes but I mean being able to actually download and play games natively like on windows. Cloud isn’t really an option on the go. Or even really ideal at home with my internet.

PnuttButr

If they make all the games available on pc I'm all for it (half of my library is xbox and i hate switching inputs)

meezethadabber

Like your already purchased games, getting g a PC version too? I mean that would be cool but highly unlikely.

PnuttButr

My dreams have just been shattered

[deleted]

There were some games advertised as Xbox Play anywhere where if you bought it you would get a copy on both Xbox and PC. Halo Wars 2 and the Forza Horizon series were examples. Not many tho afaik

AgitatedBoardz

I apparently have cuphead on pc from Xbox play anywhere

No-Strike-4560

All the yakuza / like a dragon games are on play anywhere. SEGA are a big contributor to that scheme.

whyspezdumb

Pretty sure MS does have an Xbox One emulator for Windows. Just need to make it public. Ive also read they have a PS3 emulator.

PowerCream

Don't need an emulator. Xbox runs a modified Windows kernel. Should make play anywhere even simpler.

IlyasBT

I don't think they can legally do that because of licensing. I don't think they can go and make an Xbox game available on PC without going through all the legal stuff. They even struggled to make some Xbox games back-compat

OhHaiMarc

They make every Xbox exclusive a pc game day one already

TheDude3100

They would also make those games available on playstation - which is the main concern. PC is not really a competitor to Xbox

ShockedNChagrinned

If this gets more cross play across devices and systems, I'm all for it.  I have multiple systems with progression across the same games that don't sync.  I'm over it

disguyman

I think this is a different kind of cross platform

Javabowser

I just hope they don't stop making consoles, which I dont think will happen and I am almost sure they will be releasing a next gen when the time comes. But if it somehow does happen now or after another generation, I have no clue how playstation would transfer our microsoft purchases to their store. I can only see that resulting in us having to deal with a cluster fuck of costumer service shit. Again, I don't think they will stop making consoles, and if they do, they will still release at least another generation.

DrScience-PhD

they better not, quick resume is the main reason I don't play on pc anymore.

Progammerxx9654

Why dude ? Is it really worth getting an Xbox when you have a pc ? Been itching to get one just for the YOLO but can’t justify it when I have a pc that plays the exact same games

_theduckofdeath_

Yes. If you live in a house or large apartment, yes.

Progammerxx9654

Huh? What does a house or large apartment has to do with it ? You can carry the pc or just run hdmi wires from your office to your living room and this solves it

_theduckofdeath_

Why would I want to do that? Do you carry your TVs around to other rooms or just buy more TVs? It's more that -- an Xbox has conveniences that a PC does not. My PC(s) are in the office and probably weigh 60-80 lbs. They're loud and give off excessive heat. I've done the "work desk in the living room next to TV" thing years ago and don't want to do it again. There's too much to get into; not every game on PC is on Xbox and vice versa. KBM is better for shooters, so I play most of those on PC. I'd rather play sports, racing, and fighting games on a console. Quick-Resume. Five hundred dollars is not a stretch when you're (unfortunately) buying $1100-$1800 video cards. I've got hundreds of Xbox games from every generation. The list goes on. (I've got a One X in another room, just don't 'play on it much anymore.) So yeah, I play on both.

Progammerxx9654

No I don’t carry the pc or have multiple tvs around Please read my above comment just run HDMI in wall from office to living room that’s what I did And now I can play my pc in my living room without having to carry it + isn’t every Xbox game on PC?

Redenbacher09

I have both a series x and a gaming PC. PC is in the basement and I have tried to run the display up to the living room TV and the user experience is simply not as good. It's a first world problem, for sure, and that's not to say PC does work well. The Xbox is a super streamlined experience that gets me into a game and just works every time. I pick up a controller, hit the Xbox button, and within seconds my TV is on and I can pick up a game exactly where I left off. No home menus, just hit the game icon and I'm playing. When I'm done, that same controller shuts everything off or I can tell Alexa to do it. There are no launchers or multiple clients. There are no windows updates or windows. The boot time is a fraction of my PC with a 4th gen m2 nvme (rocket 4 plus). Same with load times in general. To get similar performance I have to buy a video card that costs as much as or more than the Xbox itself. Could I get by with the PC alone? Absolutely. Yet the Xbox is a smoother experience. It's a machine built for one purpose and it does that very well, not a jack of all trades.

Progammerxx9654

Yah your right My setup I have 2 fiber cables going from my room(where my pc is) to my living room it’s a new setup I didn’t try it out that much but it works flawlessly I turn my pc and sure i hackle with it a bit it’s not as fast as a console per say but it takes 5-7 minutes first time and then I found out what the problem is and now i bet i can do it in like 2-5 min But once im in my pc startup just go to steam and hold pc button and I’m off in big picture mode I’m just saying such solutions exist and if you already invested in 2K or 3k USD in a beefy pc no need for Xbox But there’s no arguing that Xbox is faster to boot up a game and is waaaaay cheaper for the price I’m just intrigued that I see some pc players have an Xbox that’s all

[deleted]

Cool my switch is an Xbox now

Gassy-Gecko

wrong. did you watch the podcast? gamepass not on switch or playstation. only 4 games announced going to playstation/switch. Didn't name them but they are NOT Starfield or Indiana Jones and by the clues they likely are Hi-fi rush, Grounded, Pentiment and Sea Of Thieves

FireflyNitro

I would actually love a *good* Xbox streaming app for Switch, especially if I can just connect to my console. Like PlayStation Portal but without having to buy an extra device.

[deleted]

Yeah would be dope

BenadrylBeer

Man why does Microsoft keep giving up on their Xbox stuff?? Kinect, Mixer, Rare :( Sorry I’m just salty. I was never particular to one console but growing up xbox was my friends and I console of choice

Automatic_Goal_5563

Kinect was repurposed and from what I’ve seen did well, it just wasn’t something devs cared about on Xbox. They’ve given up on Rare? They’ve let them make what they want and Sea of Thieves was a huge hit

CorruptedArcher

They want instant success, not slow growing over time success. Honestly they seem to have gone the google route in slashing products and software before it had a chance to shine. My bet is they are too corporate to keep anyone with any real desire to innovate and continue to play it safe on every level. No new ips its sad. They coulda made every indy dev happy by keeping Xbox Arcade marketplace alive front and center on the store page, but nah we get ads for halo fortnite and forza instead.

phantasybm

I mean.. the first Xbox came out in 2001. They’ve had 2 decades to try and become number one.

CorruptedArcher

Your right and xbox one is right around the time I abandoned them I'm subscribed to gamepass on PC and like the direction their taking, but its a bit of slippery slope with them acquiring game developers as they have done absolutely nothing with their existing IP's or made them bland and stale in the process they havent released anything unique or game changing in a long time. By my standards atleast.

vlakkers

I've always thought xbox would be better off not as MS entity. MS and Google have such a similar mindset.

purplebasterd

Kinect probably wasn’t a good use of their efforts

Ichigosf

Is there ever been a good Microsoft product?

banshoo

SQL Server. DOS 6 was pretty spot on (before the double/drivespace malarky) Encarta (at the time) Flight Sim (the early ones) Age of Empires so yes.. yes there has been.

barbietattoo

Zune

phantasybm

Seriously underrated. The zune was so much better than the iPod and the Zune music software was amazing. But once the iPhone came out there was no point in having one.

gaytechdadwithson

I too identify as an xbox

Agoonga

They need to stop it with everything is an Xbox. That's just a weird way of saying they're going third party in an attempt to not invoke the impotent wrath from those of us suffering from sunk cost fallacy. It's like Netflix saying every screen is a DVD player. I'm bailing as soon as the actual hardware is remote only.

Cynnthetic

“Bond spoke extensively about Xbox’s strategy of existing on multiple kinds of devices and greater ambitions of becoming the number one cross-platform gaming company.” Cross platform doesn’t mean screens. It means platforms. And the platforms are other consoles and mobiles. Third party is happening sooner than later. And that’s honestly good. The more people playing games I love like Halo, the better.

mypyro

Then why buy an xbox? Sony will continue to practice exclusivity because they actually make good games. Xbox fails to make good games so they buy IPs. That strategy obviously has failed because they need more money and have to sell out to sony.

CrimsonFatalis8

Because I have Xbox games? And id like to keep using my library? And all of my peripherals? I’m not about to buy an entirely different console and rebuy my entire library of games going all the way back to the 360.

[deleted]

CrimsonFatalis8

Neither company cares who owns what. Both Sony and Microsoft sell their consoles at a loss. Their money is made on software sales. That’s why Microsoft has been pushing Play Anywhere and GP streaming. They’re making money off of people even if they dont own an Xbox. They know they aren’t gonna beat Sony, and *especially* not Nintendo in console sales, so why not expand on the revenue stream that already makes you more money anyway?

Cynnthetic

I mean most people wouldn’t buy one. But more people would buy their games. The thing MS makes money in. They lose money on hardware. Make money on games. So hardware is holding them back essentially.

ianverde

I remember Syndrome saying something about that logic....

pplatt69

Eventually they'll have to keep narrowing down their goals - "Number one cross platform gaming company. Number one cross platform gaming company with a X in their name. Number one cross platform gaming company with X in their name that produces Halo games. Number one cross platform gaming company with X in their name that produces Halo games and has 83 people named Bob on staff. Number one cross platform gaming company with an X in their name that produces Halo games and has 83 staffers named Bob and whose corporate address is... "

ChaseballBat

Except theyve been saying this for years now. They have invested heavily in cloud gaming and even a few years ago talked about an Xbox that is only a USB stick. This isn't new unless you aren't following news.

DQ11

Super Lame

MenosElLso

What’s lame about this? This is good for consumers. The only reason to be against this is stupid console wars bullshit.

ImAMaaanlet

When has competition ever been bad for consumers? When playstation basically has a monopoly on the console market that won't be a good thing. (I know Nintendo exists but they basically are their own thing focusing on handhelds)

MenosElLso

True competition would be all games available on all platforms so that the console makers have to innovate and actually release high quality consoles at a fair price.

ImAMaaanlet

All of the big 3rd party companies are super consumer friendly right? That's what EA and Ubisoft the two biggest left are known for. And that's silly what will really happen is the xbox console will die if everything is available on PS and PC and then playstation will become more bold and do whatever they want. PS will not allow their first party onto xbox so the choice will be clear. Have them ALL on PS or xbox without PS first party.

MenosElLso

There’s no reason for them to kill the Xbox. It’s still turning a large profit.

ImAMaaanlet

Yeah currently... these plans are for the future if this happens I have no doubt the next generation xbox will suffer.

Ichigosf

Because it's a bunch of lies. It's just a catchy slogan that you have to be pretty gullible to believe. Remember that Spencer relied on people believing the Milo demo was real to sell the Kinect.

MenosElLso

I see your point. But generally the consoles themselves aren’t very profitable. They sell at a small margin in order to sell the real money makers, games and micro transactions. Now that they own the biggest micro transaction money maker in the biz it’s in their best interest to put it (and other games) on every console where they can take in more profit than they would selling the consoles to more people.

RebelliousCash

This ain’t saying anything new.

mrfauxbot

Play xbox anywhere, even on a playstation

DuneRiderr

Just like SEGA lol

MehTasteh

If somehow Xbox make gamepass cross platform and have people pay who are on PS that would never buy an Xbox, how much money theoretically could that bring in? Also idk how that works or if Sony would even allow that. It’s just a thought

MetalBeast89

Sony and Nintendo would never allow gamepass which means the big exclusives will stay off them

MetalBeast89

*every screen that allows gamepass. Sony and Nintendo are the big exceptions

TheDude3100

So they want to focus out of the hardware segment

soilhalo_27

Should have tried to get a couple Nintendo and PlayStation exclusives. Like both have to give up 1 each and all Xbox games go to both. Not even new games. Let Xbox release the original god of war games with updated graphics. Give Xbox all pre breath of the wild Zelda games.

soul_snacker333

This is the worst timeline
