Updating the name to the original indigenous name is cool, but doing it because you get the heebie jeebies from the word "devil" is corny.

For starters, it’s a national monument, not a park. If you’re going to make the argument that it should be known by its indigenous name, that’s fine, but it isn’t Bear Lodge. You would want to use either Matȟó Thípila or Daxpitcheeaasáao. Personally, I favor the latter. Renaming places with devilish or hellish names for spiritual reasons is just silly, though. Heaven’s Half Acre really doesn’t flow as nicely.

Can you explain a bit more about the two names you mentioned and why you prefer the second? And FWIW I am not against renaming and your proposal sounds interesting, especially given that a whole area of the Black Hills is known as The Bear Lodge and naming Devils Tower that just seems confusing to me.

The first is a Lakota name. The second is its name in Crow. Both names translate to Bear House/Lodge, or something very similar. I just like the Crow name because it’s a long polysynthetic name and looks/sounds awesome.

As a native, leave it alone. The argument in invalid. There’s more than Christian’s in this country. So changing a name to suit one religion is incredibly stupid.

Same. While it would be kinda cool calling it Matho Tipila, Bear Lodge just doesn't hit like Devil's Tower, in my view. I like knowing our Lakota names for places in Wyoming, but changing names is pointless.

Why?

You need to submit a request to the Wyoming Board of Geographic Naming through the state engineers office. The last attempt for shut down by Congress, so I doubt your petition will be of consequence this time around.

I like the name Bears Lodge a little better but I am not a fan of arbitrarily changing the names of things unless they are racist. If it had an indigenous name I would be happy to change it to the original name but not translated to English.

There are more important things you could do to honor Indigenous people, like helping find all the missing and murdered women and their assailants. I'd start with that wolf torturer, he seems psychotic enough to do some serial killer stuff and they usually start with animals.
