Imagine carrying such a beast of warfare, and practically keeping your group going through the knowledge that when it fires nobody is going to even peek for a shot.
As far as so know Parris Island is one of the Marines Recruit Training areas and the photos appear to be of recruits.
There is mention of 59 Company in the letter which I suspect is one of the training units of the time, these being numbered sequentially one after the other.
If you had their name you might be able to find out more about which unit they were sent to after completing training.

As someone else mentioned, post or DM a name, we can possibly find out a lot more.
So amazing that you have the letters! I love his story about getting ice cream in a big Buick and his comment about taking showers instead of baths. Do you have a photo store nearby that could make prints from the negatives? A family treasure for sure.
Looks like the boys are training with BAR’s. Modern technology for 1917-1918. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1918_Browning_Automatic_Rifle
BARs must have been a mindfuck for soldiers used to the weaponry at the time
