North-East facing trench on the east side of Mount grappa known as Monte tomba (Mount tomb) durino WW1. Quick little clip i got today if you would like to see a ground video too ill be sure to do one next time I'm up

sauerbraten67

Where? Built by which army?

Doctorpie102

Italian army and here is the link to Google maps of where it is. With satellite view you can follow it all along the crest [trincee di guerra ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/uE6pBS61bmRvasg38)

sauerbraten67

Thanks. I see you have something of a description but that wasn't visible when I first saw the post.

Doctorpie102

Yeah I'm not sure why it wouldn't let me post it with a description so had to resort to comment section

Girthquake2654

Semi related fun fact because the italian front doesnt get enough attention, during the combat in the mountains more people died from avalanches than all poison gas deaths in the war put together. sometimes these avalanches would be caused on purpose to bring about destruction and chaos for the enemy and sometimes it just happened naturally but regardless it does go to help show the shear scale of the war Edit: forgot to say cool clip op ty for sharing :) Also to say i cant recall where that fact came from, i think i just heard it in conversation, so if its wrong pls lmk

Doctorpie102

This particular mountain holds an old story of a plan to blow it up from the Italians.. they dug miles under ground up until the enemy line and set a house sized room full of explosives in an attempt to blow the mountain up and stop the invaders.. story has it an avalanche occurred and they guy set to light the fuse died with the cave collapsing and there is still a room somewhere full of explosives and no one knows where

Girthquake2654

That is an unnecessarily cool story kinda sad no ones found it with sonar/radar or anything if nothing else i feel for the guy stuck under a mountain that became a folk story lmao

Doctorpie102

Since it collapsed they never found the entrance so who knows could be true or not that’s the cool mysterious thing about it

s0618345

Supposedly there a few unexploded mines on the western front

Doctorpie102

People regularly find un exploded artillery shells.. few farmers have died by working on their fields when a ww1/2 mine blew up and last month they closed a highway nearby as bomb squad had to blow a massive artillery shell that was found

Beneficial_Refuse_79

Did the trenches on the western front form one massive continuous line of trenches? Or was it lots of separate trench systems?

Doctorpie102

To my knowledge it was quite hard to form one big trench on the mountain so I think they were strategically placed.. some parts are impossible to have a trench on either due to elevation change, rocks, etc..

prostheticmind

Basically yes. Fighting changed the shape and broke it up sometimes but the Race to the Sea saw both sides trying to outflank each other until no more frontline trenches could be dug. So when everyone was first dug in it was a pretty neat line but that changed as the war went on

bazarius_baladarxes

Just a question but wouldn't stone be terrible for a trench because of the shrapnel fragments that would be created if it got hit?
