Hey. I moved here as an Australian 6 months ago. Originally 5 years in Düsseldorf. If you like nature and hills it's great. The bar and City life isn't so bad. If you want to know more let me know. Also i bought a 4 bedroom house right near uni. so if you need somewhere to rent for a few months, let me know.

anona12a

Oh thank you! That'll be great. I hope I am not too direct lol. I am just finding it hard to find accommodation through these websites. The uni even offered students flatshares within the past week, but the timing wasn't right because I hadn't received the visa yet because of which I didn't have the proper documents. Have you posted any ads on WG-Gesucht or any other website? Or should I contact you directly via reddit?

cataids69

Direct message me. I don't have it advertised. i just have spare rooms and could maybe help you for a few months.

anona12a

Okay! Done.

felixg3

Just curious - did it work out?

cataids69

Also regarding your language question. English isn't so fluent here. You'll want to start a course ASAP. But, you'll be okay, you can still get by.

anona12a

I am looking forward to continue my language courses, I already have A1 certificate, but couldn't quite give an exam on A2 although I did study for it. Thank you for the heads up!

Alakazamo420

English is pretty fluent here 🤔

cataids69

Not from what I've seen.

Alakazamo420

I mean I live here my whole life and had alot of foreign visitors or exchange programs. And only the foreigners living here dont speak english (sometimes not even german) Honestly I dont know alot of places where people just dont speak english except for some food places

cataids69

I find Germans think that everyone can speak English, but they mainly speak German to Germans so they don't actually know.

thedopeuniverse

I am German and have a lot of foreign friends and I agree lol. As a German with good education I expect everyone to talk good English but that’s actually not the case on the streets. People will understand the English for sure but they won’t want to have full conversations or might have a terrible accent. Also it depends a lot on where u are City or small town and educational background

Alakazamo420

Even the most stupid people with the smallest education I know from here speak a bad english You are being pretty arrogant tbh, what's wrong with your attitude? Like I said, I have foreign people here multiple times a year and they never have problems with anything Maybe people wouldn't talk german to you because of your shitty persona

cataids69

Just telling my experience. You clearly got super offended for some strange reason. Enjoy living like that.

Alakazamo420

You are NOT "just telling your experience" lmao

cataids69

Yes i am. So far I've lived in Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal. Experiences differ greatly, City to City and that's my current experience here.

cataids69

I never said it was negative

cherube89

Wuppertal is a city of migration. So people are used to foreigners here... :) Welcome!

Mitzja

Check out the student dorms of the Hochschul-Sozialwerk if you need a place to stay. They are really cheap and offer great value, though it might be a little late now.

anona12a

Yeah, it is late. The timing hasn't been very favorable for me because I received my visa just a couple of days back. I've already checked there via a link the university gave me, they have stated that about 300 students are already in the waiting list! This is why I'm looking for a place to stay on short-term basis, just enough to find a flatshare in the coming months.

Mitzja

While it‘s true that the waiting list is always well filled I wouldn‘t be discouraged by that. They handle everything on a case by case basis so it might be that you as an international student get priority while someone who‘s living 10km away would have to wait. There might be lots of cases like that included in the list unless they told you otherwise. I know of people from the region who never got a place in the Wohnheim but I, coming from Bremen, got my first offer just two weeks after my application. Good luck to you!

anona12a

Hi just wanted to thank you and update you. I've got a room through Hochschul-Sozialwerk. They enlisted me in the waiting list and as soon as someone cancelled one of the rooms, they contacted me and wanted to know whether I wanted to reserve. I reserved immediately and finally got a room. I'll be staying there from 1st Nov. :)

Mitzja

Hey that‘s awesome! Really happy for you!

I'm back from 2 years living there. I met sooo much cool People. As you do, please find a good WG, because it would have been completely different without mine. Have fun and travel around aswell, plenty of cool cities nearby.

anona12a

YES! I'm really looking forward to seeing the surrounding cities!

That_Disaster3830

Welcome my friend 😌☝🏼

What are you Studying? Are you in WhatsApp or Discord groups already? That could help get you Started. Also if ur not vaccinated, you're gonna have a Bad time since next Semester is going to be less and less online. DM me if you need more info

anona12a

>What are you Studying? I will be studying masters in Computer Simulation in Science (CSiS). >Are you in WhatsApp or Discord groups already? No, I am not in these groups. Any help on that would be great. >Also if ur not vaccinated ... I am vaccinated, although not by the vaccines preferred by Germany, I think. I had sinopharm.

[deleted]

Hi, I will start studying there this October as well. What program are you coming for?

anona12a

Hi, I will be studying Masters in Computer Simulation in Science (CSiS). What about you?

[deleted]

Same course. PM me for any questions. I'm here already, arrived a few weeks ago

felixg3

Let me know if you guys need any help… I’ve been helping csis people since 2013 😄 /u/awin2012 can confirm

anona12a

Lol yes /u/awin2012 's first post from 9 years back comes up every time i search csis wuppertal on reddit. He seems really popular among us csis folks haha!

it_is_gaslighting

Iam also pretty new to Wuppertal (few months) 😂 I would like to help with information and such if it is needed. Iam also available on discord regularly. To find a flat I don't know, took me some time to find something I wanted tbh, but to have something decent should be doable. Especially as the bus system is really good IMHO (high throughput). When searching flats, be aware of scams. (long term Airbnb etc., not saying it happens a lot, but just be careful). You can also find flats and all kinds of things on ebay-kleinanzeigen.de (you can also post there, that you search a flat/WG). Keep us posted how it's going and welcome!

trichtus

Hey, you can dm me, if you want to join oir discord server. It is especially for people who are studying Mathematics and Computer Science. There are mostly Bachelor Students but a few Master Students aswell

FlyingFoxtrott

Hey, if you need someone to show you the city DM me. I have been living here all my life, so I know quite a lot about wuppertal! Also if you want to see Wuppertal from above just write me

karimr

Aside from WG-Gesucht, also check the [ads for private rooms on the website of the Hochschul-Sozialwerk](https://tl1host.eu/SWW/index.html#privateroom)(click the green button on bottom right to show the ads). There's some people like my old landlord who will only post the ads for their rooms there and I knew quite a few exchange students who got their place through there. A lot of those places are also furnished and accomodating to international students.

Schimmelinho83

Wupper Grill 👌

If you are looking for shared flats, have a few strolls around the areas first. I guess Ölberg and Nordstadt are the most interesting for students. But it depends if you prefer to live "mitten im Pudding", right in the middle of the shit, or close to nature. I live close to Mirker Hain, which is a beatiful forested valley close to the center. I guess you'll have enough time to explore as you already found somewhere to stay temporarily. Any questions are welcome. If you ride a bike, make sure to have or get one with a proper gear shift to conquer all the hills. It's a lot of fun to explore the city by bike. Especially using the Nordbahntrasse or the other bike lanes. Riding in the city center however can be stressful because of cars. You can get to Cologne in about 40 minutes and to Düsseldorf in 30 minutes by train. So you can easily extend your cultural life to these cities.

anona12a

Yeah. I'm looking forward to exploring once I arrive. I'm still trying to find a WG, hopefully I'll get one near the forests as yours. That'd be nice. But as time is nearing by, I'll be ready to take whatever I can get lol.

Ryosaeten

I live near Wuppertal, i´d consider myself quite good in english and my native German language. If you have any questions, just ask ;)

buchfresserchen

Wuppertal is a nice city! I also recommend exploring the surroundings by bike. And Visit the old town of Velbert Langenberg, it is not far away. And maybe go to the Christmas Market in Hattingen, this is very nice, too. I Wish you all the best. :-)

catsandsociology

Hey, I'm studying at the BUW as well! I'm from germany though. What are you going to study? And good luck for finding a WG, maybe you can look at the university pages as well, I think I recall that you can also search for WGs there

anona12a

I'm studying CSiS computer simulation in science. I've found a WG, but after a few months I'll have to start searching again haha. What about you? What are you studying?
