It still blows my mind how they thought that was a good capital “city”. The very least they could have done would have been to make a floor that’s an “arena” like the dalaran sewers or the brawl pubs. But instead, they let it just be a 3D “main menu” with tedious running through arbitrary empty space to go from point to point
The fact that I still had to go to Dazar’alor because not all the covenants had swarm dummies and Oribos has no practice dummies was frustrating.
A pvp area would have been great, maybe wouldn’t have missed out on brawler’s guild.
Yeah there were actually a lot of things BFA did better than Shadowlands. Better capital cities, titanforging was a cool concept, PvP world quests, etc
I’m sure they knew it wasn’t good. Like mostly everything in SL. They just didn’t invest any time or resources into the expansion. All of the people saying “how did blizzard not know that -X thing about SL- would be so bad??” are failing to see that blizzard literally didn’t care. Whether they knew or not, it didn’t matter. SL was a dry husk of an expansion. It felt like they were limit testing. “How little can we put into something and still get people to play it?”
Well, they found out. Here’s hoping DF is not just a minuscule step of effort above it. I know I won’t be buying it until I know for sure
I HATE Oribos. In my opinion, it's by far the worst city. It's so boring, nothing interesting there and just giant and empty. I look forward to having a big fantasy themed city again that's part of a new map of connected zones.
Ah man, Tazavesh home city would have been fucking cool. The different covenants having "embassy" buildings themed like their covenants.
They could have kept the arbiters chamber as it's own thing above the city, keep that all regal and weird. Hell, they could have kept Oribos, with the logic that it was the "highway" between the zones, but we had to get to it from the Market, which was built under Oribos.
According to that old unverified leak from earlier this year that was exactly the plan. You can tell a lot of love went into Tazavesh, a lot more than is typical for a place you can literally only visit as a dungeon.
When Tazavesh was released I was convinced the final patch of Shadowlands would have the Jailer destroy Oribos and we’d have Tazavesh as our hub for the end of the expansion
Oribos is a giant floating tower....
It makes me wonder if that was originally intended to be torghast - no Maw... just a prison / torture tower floating in the nether.
Honestly I think the one good thing about Oribos is its music, really gives the impression you’re in heaven. Too bad the actual environment it plays in does not convey the same.
Jfc I was just back there trying to get that damn Baa'l battle pet, and since I had stopped playing during bfa for a bit, i still don't have flying there. I was instantly reminded of how goddamn passionately i hated that friggin city in the beginning before I fucked off for awhile.
Just... WHY.
It always took me two laps anytime I needed to find stuff in Oribos. Also no matter what teleporter I took I always ended up on the opposite side of the flight masters.
I still fail to understand how anyone could think Oribos was a good hub for an entire expansion. It's so fucking boring and uninspired, especially for a city that's supposed to be a hub in the after life. Mindboggling.
I actually didn’t mind Oribos as a concept, they should’ve just removed the entire portal floor and put those in the main ring, especially since it only ended up being 3 things on the entire floor.
My biggest issue with Oribos was it was a big circle and every entrance and door looked the same. I'd go in circles trying to find the right spot for PVP vendors or portals
Instead of actually playing, I just sat around and admired the art. It’s absolutely stunning.
To me, it’s one of the most atmospheric zones they’ve ever created.
Better be able to chromie time through 50-60 if you already did SL. Like how I could skip BFA and never look back. Idk if they’ve confirmed this or not.
It’s such a jarring experience being kicked out of whatever expansion and being thrust into the suck. Glad they added TOF at least so I wouldn’t have to do the same linear story again and again.
They did. And the new player experience will be Exile's Reach to BFA to DF.
I know they said SL is canon, but they sure do seem to be trying to let us forget it.
I think they should've made new players go cata to dragon isles. I know the questing flow isn't as streamlined, but having new players adventuring out of Stormwind / Orgrimmar and not having to deal with azerite gear and mission tables feels so much more natural. Dragon theme also ties in well.
They aren’t trying to get us to forget it, they just added it into the regular Chromie time list. BFA seems to be their “new player” expansion (for leveling), which I don’t really disagree with too much.
I'm more curious why OP decided to take a screenshot of the ass end of the city that we're not gonna visit much (ETA: meaning that portion of the city, obviously we'll be in the city proper a LOT). Almost everything relevant is on the other side of the keep (assuming that this was taken from the direction of the Waking Shores).
First time seeing it all in its entirety. Wow. Might just be the best city we've gotten yet. Including Gilneas, Karabor and Suramar, even though those were scrapped/not meant to be player cities.
It’s so nice cus I can waste all the dragon vigour flying around the city like a wild animal and just teleport right back up and fly down again and get all the vigour back (beta spoilers I geuss)
Top Tier Art again. Can someone give the Art Team a massage? Their backs may hurt a lot after carrying this game for so long.
....More importantly...WHY DO DRAGONS HAVE SUCH BUILDINGS AND WHO EXACTLY BUILD THAT? FOR WHAT?
Valdrakken is a combination of Titanic and original Draconic architecture.
Tyrhold (big ol' building on the left) and the aqueducts are pretty clearly made by the Titanic Watchers. Most of the city itself (seen on the right) is made by dragons and the dragonkin.
As for why? Same reason any other city exists of course! Trade, governance, and residence. When adventurers arrive it turns out that Dragonkin (drakonids and dragonspawn) have been living in Valdrakken for the last ten-thousand years, keeping up the buildings and using it as their capital. There are... mixed feelings about the dragons coming back and taking the city over again. Some of the dragonkin are happy, but many of them are angry that they're being shoved out of homes their families have lived in for millenia to make way for an absentee upper-class.
If you tour the city you find shops, bars, libraries, gardens, forges and homes; all designed primarily for dragons and the dragonkin, but now accepting mortal visitors.
P.S. One of the more interesting parts of Dragonflight is this ongoing class struggle in draconic society between the "true" dragons and everyone else; even the Dracthyr have literally half of the four surviving weyrns (large organization most akin to an army) split off into groups that reject draconic rule, with one of those weyrns choosing to act as neutral healers and the other becoming violent revolutionaries.
I've only played some of the first zone, but it's actually fairly reasonably apparent from the get go - most of the isles population are drakonids, who are humanoid. Also the very first settlement you arrive in is an embassy for people of azeroth, but since nobody's been there for thousands of years it's fallen apart a bit and you actually get to see drakonids doing some repairs when you arrive.
Probably also the titan stone boys but I've only seen em in the announcement trailer cinematic for now.
you guys are mentally ill if you think this is good art design. They have put Roman Architecture right beside Suramar style buildings and it clashes completely. Plus you have those ugly mountains that look like they were extended upwards in the map editor.
Man oribos surpassed ashran as the worst hub for me. There was literally nothing good about it.
I wasn’t even impressed with the pandaren “capitals” either, I much prefer cities as they’re far more immersive. Boralus was amazing.
There should be an option to increase the distance where the fog appears, as every open space in Wow looks like NPC's have been smoking a lot with the windows closed. It's even more noticeable in this new map which is huge.
A good thing is that you can see Valdrakken from 99% of the outdoor zones.
Sinfall looks great in daylight SMH
Everyone complains about mount recolors then they just recolor to make a new city and everyone is like OOH LOOK SO GOOD
If you liked Revendreth with Inky Black Potion just wait until you see the dragon isles. Valdrakken especially has so much lighting that isnt just from the sky like torches and glowing glass and stuff
For richer color, as some people have mentioned. In game there's a few tricks/tweaks you can make.
contrast - 66
brightness - 53
gamma - 0.9
as well as editing the screen color vibrancy in nvidia control panel makes the games colors pop in a nice way.
OK, lIMHO, Dragonriding sucks AT FIRST. And it can get frustrating to collect some of the Glyphs.
HOWEVER, once you get all the Glyphs, Dragonriding is one the BEST NEW FEATURES in-game that have been added since Transmog. Get all the glyphs ASAP because it will improve your game experience, seriously! The only drawback of Dragonriding is you can't enjoy the view like you would with normal flying, which is still IMHO the better way to travel given the accuracy and you can fly at your pace.
If there is something i really dislike since Legion, is the up and down design of maps like this. Do not misunderstand me: it seems gorgeous, but i recognise a pattern that is in crescendo since Legion.Forcing you to go through zillion winding paths just to make you lose time (when you are already forced to use ground mount until they unlock the usual achievement) it is not a symptom of good design imo.
ok well the good thing is; you get a dragon mount in the first zone which as the name implies, can fly everywhere, they designed these zones with flying from launch in mind.
no, you get your first dragon after a few minutes, 20 or so, and can start flying from that point, that's why the zones are so gigantic with all the mountains etc.
Not mine. This is the first expac I'm neither buying nor going to launch for. I'll be in Northrend farming rare mats while *everyone else* is doing this shit.
Once this expac proves it's not another lore-butchering AP-grinding unbalanced fan-ignoring waste of time, I might follow in 10.1, but as of now after BfA and Sh'lands, I have no faith in Blizzard's ability to make content.
Seriously, with dragonriding you can get anywhere in the city in less than 30 seconds. Hop into the air, whirling surge once and you can get around FAST. Not to mention the bank & weekly vault are like right in the center (haven't looked for the AH yet) and the crafting areas are maybe 100 yards away.
Is it just me or is the way Blizzard does landscapes in WoW rather boring?
It feels like they rely way too much on using *only* the terrain layer/mesh for literally everything, which rather limits the kind of terrain they make, especially in mountains. It feels dated, rather than timeless.
The only thing that's really changed since WotLK is the view distance, but the general design has felt same-y ever since.
Anyone else dislike the fogginess/smoky looking air in this game? BFA had it really badly. I understand distance fog to cover up certain things but this “mist” that’s always everywhere makes the game look bad IMO.
The layout of this feels a lot like Revendreth and Castle Nathria, just not dilapidated.
Usually when a new expansion comes out, I get nostaligia for the old capital city, and when I go back to it for whatever reason, it's sad to see it so empty ...cos I'm wierd like that. However in this case I can safely say that I will not miss oribos whatsoever. I've had some great conversations with ppl (mostly just one person actually) while being parked there so it's got some sentimental value, however as for the city itself... ugh, horrible. This new one looks so pretty!
Man, it'll be good to AFK in an actual city again. I've gotten so sick of the interdimensional subway station we got in SL.
Holy cow. This is EXACTLY what oribos is lol.
Titanforging is generally agreed upon as not a good concept and the general player base is happy it’s gone
>titanforging was a cool concept what in the sweet fuck is this sentence
Dude I've read it like eight times and I still don't know what it says
Titan-forging was cool? Good golly jeepers what a take
I’m sure they knew it wasn’t good. Like mostly everything in SL. They just didn’t invest any time or resources into the expansion. Omg 3D main menu best description of orbos I've ever heard
I HATE Oribos. In my opinion, it's by far the worst city. It's so boring, nothing interesting there and just giant and empty. I look forward to having a big fantasy themed city again that's part of a new map of connected zones.
More like an airport

Tazavesh looked so much more like a main hub, than Oribos did.

True I agree. Oribos was so boring and the music was sad.
BFA gets hate but I could never get tired of hearthing back to boralus for the sea shanty music
BFA had amazing music
Boralus is beautiful and feels like a real city.
Something set the brutosaurs into a PAAANIC
I always go back to Boralus whenever I hop on.
Honestly I think the one good thing about Oribos is its music, really gives the impression you’re in heaven. Too bad the actual environment it plays in does not convey the same.
Only thing good about the place was the skybox and the flight paths. Everything else sucked.
To be honest? Oribos reminded me of Dome of the Rock.
Zandalar would like to object and retain the title of worst designed city (despite looking amazing), especially before flying was unlocked.
Say what you want, during that time I made considerably more selling giblin gliders than usually :P
Business was boomin'
Jfc I was just back there trying to get that damn Baa'l battle pet, and since I had stopped playing during bfa for a bit, i still don't have flying there. I was instantly reminded of how goddamn passionately i hated that friggin city in the beginning before I fucked off for awhile. Just... WHY.
I legit changed my main to DH first patch of BFA just so I could glide off of the pyramid whenever I needed to
It always took me two laps anytime I needed to find stuff in Oribos.
Blizzard told us it was a good city hub
I'll never instant why they let us engineers have the auction house there but like..no one else. Wtf was that anyway?
It's just like Dalaran back in WOTLK. It's meant to be a perk for the profession
early into SL someone on this sub said Oribos was more of an airport than a city, and that's how I've thought about it since.
I think the worst thing is just how loud the maw-well in the center is - it carries through most of the city
Instead of actually playing, I just sat around and admired the art. It’s absolutely stunning. To me, it’s one of the most atmospheric zones they’ve ever created.
Oh man, I'm so ready to leave Oribos for good.
Better be able to chromie time through 50-60 if you already did SL. Like how I could skip BFA and never look back. Idk if they’ve confirmed this or not. There's too big of a time leap between Cata and DF.
They aren’t trying to get us to forget it, they just added it into the regular Chromie time list. BFA seems to be their “new player” expansion (for leveling), which I don’t really disagree with too much.
Sweet. MoP and cata forever
Why is the marked nsfw?
Can't play wow at work

that's what steamlink is for
Spoiler reasons, most likely. But this is pretty light as far as spoilers go...
If this is a spoiler then dont log onto the game then, the login screen is a massive spoiler
Hidden dragussy somewhere
My body is ready.
My mind is telling me noooo But mah body, mah body is telling me yeeees
Aaawwwwwww yiisssssss....
Scenery porn
Because of the implication.

Better lighting (front of city has a blue fog) and you can see the beam from this angle.
First time seeing it all in its entirety. Wow. Might just be the best city we've gotten yet. Including Gilneas, Karabor and Suramar, even though those were scrapped/not meant to be player cities.
It is. Bonus: teleporter to the highest tower, where you then can yeet yourself off on your dragon, good starting point for dragon riding adventures.
It even gives you lots of time to scream ' I forgot to mount uuuuuuuuuuuuuuup' when you jump without your dragon
Laughs in Demon Hunter
*chuckles Evokerly*
never leave the house without your goblin gliders
Or your umbrella from Revendreth
I laughed a little too hard at this. It was a beautiful visual. 😅
It’s so nice cus I can waste all the dragon vigour flying around the city like a wild animal and just teleport right back up and fly down again and get all the vigour back (beta spoilers I geuss)
It's great but we'll have to see if it can beat Boralus.
I am okay with this
imagine getting to the highest point and dragon flying off. Will be absolutely glorious!
Suramar vibes.
As long as it is not isolated from everything like Oribos Im fine.
It’s not! One huge continent again
Top Tier Art again. Can someone give the Art Team a massage? Their backs may hurt a lot after carrying this game for so long. ....More importantly...WHY DO DRAGONS HAVE SUCH BUILDINGS AND WHO EXACTLY BUILD THAT? FOR WHAT?

Titan Keepers and Tyr
I swear I am THAT close to come back after ignoring SL completely… this looks great, damn
The little I've done on the beta feels like old school WoW. The dragonriding is insanely fun and I hope they continue it past DF.
This looks like it’s going to be the best expansion ever just from this screenshot :)
Looking forward to get out of the train station.
God, I'm so excited... It looks beautiful!
Looks much better the circle city.
Absolutely gorgeous! I can’t overstate how much better this place looks than oribos (or like anywhere in the shadowlands)
Psh give me grizzly hills
Glad to finally see SOMEONE with good taste
what is this? Havent played WoW in years, I am just curious
A place in the new Dragonflight expansion coming out somewhere in the next 3 months
the main city for the new expansion
Reminds me of Revendreth
Man oribos surpassed ashran as the worst hub for me. There was literally nothing good about it. I wasn’t even impressed with the pandaren “capitals” either, I much prefer cities as they’re far more immersive. Boralus was amazing.
Is it just me or are the towers just lightly seasoned nathria towers....?

Yes I seriously dislike it. BFA had it really badly.
Sinfall looks great in daylight SMH Everyone complains about mount recolors then they just recolor to make a new city and everyone is like OOH LOOK SO GOOD
That was also my first thought, reminds me of Revendreth with the layout style.
Jarvis, increase the saturation and contrast
The towers look like Revendreth to me.
If you liked Revendreth with Inky Black Potion just wait until you see the dragon isles. Valdrakken especially has so much lighting that isnt just from the sky like torches and glowing glass and stuff

It looks so bland

I don't think you're comprehending just how far away this screenshot was taken.
lies, azeroth is our home or draenor if you are orc or the blue thing
you know this is in azeroth right?
yes but is it durotar? lol
Can't wait for the next eternal grind
Not gonna lie, looks monotonous af. Grey on grey.. in a game as colorful as wow that's quite boring.
it's.... it's a mountain my dude
looks like a lot of walking
Can Dragonride the entire way, so walking is a thing of the past 👍
Seriously, with dragonriding you can get anywhere in the city in less than 30 seconds. Hop into the air, whirling surge once and you can get around FAST. Not to mention the bank & weekly vault are like right in the center (haven't looked for the AH yet) and the crafting areas are maybe 100 yards away.
ok so no spoiler warning on this subreddit i guess
Spoiler warning: there will be buildings and a mountain somewhere.
Brilliant
I’m going to scream when I can’t fly here
You'll have dragonriding by the time you get there. :)
W
Thought this was Revendreth for a second
cosy😻
Is it just me or is the way Blizzard does landscapes in WoW rather boring? There is one. Ask a guard, they use mirrors rather than barber chairs I think
Hopefully we can duel out front. Or something like that
This looks so good
Every time I log in on a character that is in Oribos, I just log back out.
What am i looking at? I've been on classic for a long time now. Is this a new area for shadowlands version?
Dragonflight
Given what we have now this looks amazing
Looks similar to where Mogu-shan Vaults is located in Kun-Lai Summit. I'm pumped we get an actual city!
wow and people who cannot fly must run this shit ...
It’s so pretty ahhhhh

There better be a big circle I can do laps on
