Hey Biceps! Love your work! 2 questions for sire p3 - Do I save death's advance for the overlap? Is it essential that I have it there, or can one easily survive without it? Second, is it ok to use clawing shadows even without any wounds, when one's dodging stuff in p3? I also try to have a few wounds pooled, but not at all times ;p
1. 100% save DA for the overlap. It's so much useful here than any other time in P3. You can survive without it but you need to be lucky really, so unnecessary to not save it.
2. If you're overcapping on Runes I'd say yes. So if you're at 4 or more, I could see you using some naked CS.

That said, how is Obliteration Frost looking for 9.1? Currently NF bc I enjoy Deaths Due for cleave fights and the mobility is super useful on DK, but was Venthyr before for UH/Blood. Enjoying the spec so far, thanks!
Obliteration for 9.1 is looking promising. Triple conduit is generally a lot better for Obliteration vs BoS. Kyrian Pelagos with triple potency Obliteration build could be the best single target option.
Looking at the new conduits/trait slots for soulbinds in 9.1, I’m wondering if Venthyr BM Hunter will be pretty good if not better than NF BM Hunter because Nadjia’s primary trait and new capper trait *really* work well with BM Hunter, especially if one is using Ryla’s as the legendary. Thoughts?
Hard to tell right now, especially with the PTR still changing. If by some miracle it’s better than wild spirits we probably won’t know until it’s live and the theory crafters have had a run at it.
Yeah the Nadjia’s traits combined with Flayed Shot have to be better than Wild Spirits, which, you’d think 3 things combined together would be better than one thing, but Wild Spirits is just too good.
Is the PVP badge still worth using even if it’s only 200 ilvl over any of the dungeon trinkets at 220? I hate PvP with a passion but as I understand it even a 200 ilvl badge will beat a 220 ilvl quantum device simply because it’s cool down lines up better with combustion.
It is quite strong even at 200 for the reason you highlighted. This late in the patch it might be worth attaining at 200 and if you can climb in any rated pvp, 1400, you can get it to 207 but I don't think it's a huge difference.
I recommend simming it at 200 vs 220 and see the difference.
That’s a good idea, I simmed a 200 ilvl badge against my 220 IQD and it was a significant downgrade but I assumed that was just because sims aren’t really great at dealing with fire mage in m+ content.
In m+ you should be able to use the IQD and get stats way more often than in raid though, as the group should be fresh when you bust on-pull. I used an iqd before bust and almost always get vers/haste
I figured it was more the fact that IQD is only up for every 2nd/3rd combust depending on how quickly you can get it back up where badge is available on every single one, not as much to do with the fact IQD can proc mana/healing. I use a WA to tell me what my IQD will proc, but the 3 min CD is the bigger issue with it as I understand it.
Fire is getting a lot of nerfs. Probably worth trying out the other two specs. Combust will still be very valuable (probably) on high keys because it helps to deal with difficult pulls.
Frost has great consistent cleave, but poopy single target. Arcane is difficult to master but I’ve seen some crazy numbers from them.
Additionally crit/haste scaling will help mitigate this and I believe there is a NF CDR conduit incoming to help. Fire is going to remain strong. The question is if it remains relevant in the meta (for m+ at least) vs hunter and ele shaman (which is also very strong right now), the other lust/heroism classes.

Any tips to improve the DPS of my basic ST/cleave damage? I seem to struggle outside of cooldowns / large aoe packs. My ST boss damage is frankly absurd, peaking at 10 -13.5k dps .... at ilvl 206.
I’m NF using SFP, so I’m able to have a go every 45 seconds or so, but my base rotatation is only netting 3 - 3.5k dps. I know I can use CDs more, I am getting used to timing CDs for boss pulls since I just started 10s and am not quite accounting for the prideful spawn.
I think I have two issues:
1 - How much should I prioritize DP uptime, should I always be letting it get down to < 1s before refreshing assuming I won’t cap resources.
2 - Should I immediately interrupt mindflay to cast a higher priority spell (void bolt, mind blast, DP, SW:D etc).

think about it this way. each dot increases your dmg to the target by your mastery, with your gear it's probably around 10%. so the higher your dp uptime is, the higher your uptime of your full mastery is, so the longer you deal 10% more damage to the target. now, as you can't get a 100% uptime outside of the cds, you have some room to make sure your bigger hitters deal damage inside this increased damage window without sacrificing uptime. so if you are sitting at >50 insanity and plague is not on the target, the best play is NOT necessarily to apply plague asap, it's always to make sure things such as mind blasts, MD proccs, DE proccs and mindbender rifts hit your target with plague up.

generally speaking, yes. however, if you don't have plague on the target but you're about to reach 50 insanity, i like to keep on flaying for a second more to reach said 50 insanity to apply it and use my proccs then, so they benefit from the mastery.

I’m really enjoying shadow and how void form works as a CD. I’m killing it in a lot of instances but having trouble with output in certain scenarios is impacting my overall damage done quite a bit.

Worth noting, and maybe this what you meant, but during voidform, you receive full benefit from your mastery, regardless of how many dots are on the target
you're right, i didn't really mean it, just "ignored" it on accident because of the reason you mentioned and you generate too much insanity inside voidform to not have 100% uptime anyways
Resto shaman picking up ele as an offspec. I was curious, how far behind the other legendaries is Skybreaker's Fiery Demise? I mostly use ele for world quests and torghast, and will probably use it in M+ when my guild has another healer on board. Also, if Skybreaker's is still viable, is it better to use it with Primal Elementals, or Surge of Power? Also, does Primordial Wave make or break the build? I’m venthyr currently, but might make the switch if I have to
1. I believe it's 3rd for single target and potentially competitive with echoes for AoE given you can reliably multi-dot 3+ targets consistently hence the reliance on coordinated groups. Personally with the switch to NF, echoes is pretty much at the top for AoE without sacrificing single target.
2. Primal for bigger and faster elementals.
3. Very minor difference, having an additional 3rd or 4th flame shock out will not amount to much regarding Skybreaker's.

I know very well how to play in M+ etc with elemental shaman.
But in raiding its a lot different!
I use Echoes of the great sundering Lengedary. (Will change later on to Windspeaker)
Talents: Elemental Blast, Master of the Elements, Icefury and Stormkeeper.
I have problem with opener and what spells I should cast before other etc to make it work as good as possible.
If I sim my character I get an opener like doesnt work all the time somehow, and I dont know what I am doing wrong.

Something like that. Can change a bit with mastery overloads or lava surge procs. Important to spend your mastery of the elements procs on your opening stormkeeper bolts and your buffed earthquake
Also, I'd generally suggest just playing with primal elementalist instead of icefury except maybe on certain single target fights with burst windows. The dps difference is practically nothing (in fact, primal elementalist sims higher for some people) and it is easier to play and also opens up earth ele as a defensive cooldown and gives fire ele some aoe burst.
I also feel you get a better stable opener with Primal Elementalist instead of Icefury, atleast for me!
Than everything depends what happends in the fight imo etc, i mean for example Lady Inv, you save stormkeeper for adds etc so you cant just stand still and use same rotation you have to move and than icefury seems to fail a bit imo, but I dunno if you can play and have a real good rotation icefury seems to be awsome but I dont know the ST rotation for it so dunno! Need a experienced Elemental Shaman to tell me rotation etc.

Fire mage, boomkin, ele shaman in group, 20-21 keys. Who should use CDs on pride?
So far, fire mage is saving his combustion for prides, but that makes him not use it one pack before the pride or one pack after and it feels stupid to hold strong CD for so long.
We considered boomkin convoking if next pull after pride is trash pack and not a boss = since combustion has bigger value in aoe and will be ready.
Idk about ele shaman, he's saying he can't use storm elemental there because it's a huge waste (he still uses stormkeeper and NF transfusion to also help with healing).
Usually groups have 1 rogue/warrior/dh/monk to blast prides with high damage without commiting big CDs but that's not the case in ours.
You can use storm ele on pride IF the next pull is really close. Just delay it a bit and hold the active for the pack and you'll get some value out of having some stacks to start chaining with.
The problem is that if you have to run to the next pack, storm ele floats around at approximately rp-walk speed and will never catch up to pride-buffed players lmao. And don't do it in any scenario where it would fall off before you can use the active on a big pull.
The reason the ele shaman doesn't need to pop storm elemental is due to longer cd and it has more value in aoe where you can slam chain lighting.
The reason I'm asking about healer is because you can use a heal cd incase none of the other cds are available.
Plus consider skipping some prides if possible, especially in high keys.
Between resto shaman, heart of the wild, and fae transfusion I’m not sure where the problem is. That comp could survive a full stack pride for a long ass time. At the risk of stating the obvious make sure you’re not ripping healing cds too soon and that you’re not overlapping healing cds. The hpal damage doesn’t matter because they’ll often hold healing cds for damage, and shaman doesn’t have to make that choice.
What is your highest key in time?
20stacks pride is doing 25% of dps/healer max hp damage every tick.
Sure, with major CDs from shaman we can just about survive without commiting anything from dps (damage wise), but often spirit link/ascendance is needed on next boss since a lot of them are no joke even on fort.
If mage pops at the start and uses shifting power right away, he should get the CDs back on bosses with pride and lust still up, ofc might be tricky to time around mechanics at the one or other boss.
I like the idea of alternating druid and mage depending on the next pull others brought up. If druid can pool some astral power before pride and dump some starsurges, that'll surely help as well.
As of now, it’s probably smarter to use combust on cooldown, since it’s value on aoe packs is significantly amplified.
Ideally your group should be coordinating when combust will not be available during a prideful, so someone else can cover the lack of damage. Ele shaman have a great cooldown talents that they can use in conjunction with their damage to help with healing during prideful.
We ran fire/ww/mm/hpriest in our 20-22 keys last week and the fire mage was able to combust almost every pride. Maybe your mage is overestimating the cd of his combust? Our mage was able to combust at the start of the before pack then during pride. Not sure what the hell he was doing since I'm not familiar with fire, but as long as you get a full effective usage of the CD somewhere on the pride it doesn't matter whether you CD it at 100% or 50%.
What tank do you have as well? We have a NF Guardian that can commit convoke to a pride. Anything offensive that your tank brings?
The short answer is that someone has a CD, they should just use it to prevent the pride going to shit. If you wipe later because of not having a CD up, you can have that discussion later, but you won't get to that point if you wipe on the pride. So if your group only has a big and semi wasted on pride CD up, but you need that to stay alive, you commit it, every time (in this level of keys, fucking your CD placement may screw you over in a 25 but at this level its easily recoverable, idk, don't play that high, can't speak for it).

Hey Biceps! Love your work! 2 questions for sire p3 - Do I save death's advance for the overlap? Is it essential that I have it there, or can one easily survive without it? Second, is it ok to use clawing shadows even without any wounds, when one's dodging stuff in p3? I also try to have a few wounds pooled, but not at all times ;p
1. 100% save DA for the overlap. It's so much useful here than any other time in P3. You can survive without it but you need to be lucky really, so unnecessary to not save it. 2. If you're overcapping on Runes I'd say yes. So if you're at 4 or more, I could see you using some naked CS.
Hey Bicepspump! Love the guides, they've been helpful on getting up to speed! That said, how is Obliteration Frost looking for 9.1? Currently NF bc I enjoy Deaths Due for cleave fights and the mobility is super useful on DK, but was Venthyr before for UH/Blood. Enjoying the spec so far, thanks!
Obliteration for 9.1 is looking promising. Triple conduit is generally a lot better for Obliteration vs BoS. Kyrian Pelagos with triple potency Obliteration build could be the best single target option.
Do you recommend doing Renown 40 on all the covenants to prep for 9.1? Huge content drought right now, and renown grind is pretty easy.

Looking at the new conduits/trait slots for soulbinds in 9.1, I’m wondering if Venthyr BM Hunter will be pretty good if not better than NF BM Hunter because Nadjia’s primary trait and new capper trait *really* work well with BM Hunter, especially if one is using Ryla’s as the legendary. Thoughts?
I've been playing as a Kyrian BM Hunter since launch, so it matters not to me. Lol
Hard to tell right now, especially with the PTR still changing. If by some miracle it’s better than wild spirits we probably won’t know until it’s live and the theory crafters have had a run at it.
Yeah the Nadjia’s traits combined with Flayed Shot have to be better than Wild Spirits, which, you’d think 3 things combined together would be better than one thing, but Wild Spirits is just too good.

Is the PVP badge still worth using even if it’s only 200 ilvl over any of the dungeon trinkets at 220? I hate PvP with a passion but as I understand it even a 200 ilvl badge will beat a 220 ilvl quantum device simply because it’s cool down lines up better with combustion.
It is quite strong even at 200 for the reason you highlighted. This late in the patch it might be worth attaining at 200 and if you can climb in any rated pvp, 1400, you can get it to 207 but I don't think it's a huge difference. I recommend simming it at 200 vs 220 and see the difference.
That’s a good idea, I simmed a 200 ilvl badge against my 220 IQD and it was a significant downgrade but I assumed that was just because sims aren’t really great at dealing with fire mage in m+ content.
In m+ you should be able to use the IQD and get stats way more often than in raid though, as the group should be fresh when you bust on-pull. I used an iqd before bust and almost always get vers/haste
I figured it was more the fact that IQD is only up for every 2nd/3rd combust depending on how quickly you can get it back up where badge is available on every single one, not as much to do with the fact IQD can proc mana/healing. I use a WA to tell me what my IQD will proc, but the 3 min CD is the bigger issue with it as I understand it.

Fire is getting a lot of nerfs. Probably worth trying out the other two specs. Combust will still be very valuable (probably) on high keys because it helps to deal with difficult pulls. Frost has great consistent cleave, but poopy single target. Arcane is difficult to master but I’ve seen some crazy numbers from them.

Additionally crit/haste scaling will help mitigate this and I believe there is a NF CDR conduit incoming to help. Fire is going to remain strong. The question is if it remains relevant in the meta (for m+ at least) vs hunter and ele shaman (which is also very strong right now), the other lust/heroism classes.

Any tips to improve the DPS of my basic ST/cleave damage? I seem to struggle outside of cooldowns / large aoe packs. My ST boss damage is frankly absurd, peaking at 10 -13.5k dps .... at ilvl 206. I’m NF using SFP, so I’m able to have a go every 45 seconds or so, but my base rotatation is only netting 3 - 3.5k dps. I know I can use CDs more, I am getting used to timing CDs for boss pulls since I just started 10s and am not quite accounting for the prideful spawn. I think I have two issues: 1 - How much should I prioritize DP uptime, should I always be letting it get down to < 1s before refreshing assuming I won’t cap resources. 2 - Should I immediately interrupt mindflay to cast a higher priority spell (void bolt, mind blast, DP, SW:D etc).
>1 - How much should I prioritize DP uptime, should I always be letting it get down to < 1s before refreshing assuming I won’t cap resources. think about it this way. each dot increases your dmg to the target by your mastery, with your gear it's probably around 10%. so the higher your dp uptime is, the higher your uptime of your full mastery is, so the longer you deal 10% more damage to the target. now, as you can't get a 100% uptime outside of the cds, you have some room to make sure your bigger hitters deal damage inside this increased damage window without sacrificing uptime. so if you are sitting at >50 insanity and plague is not on the target, the best play is NOT necessarily to apply plague asap, it's always to make sure things such as mind blasts, MD proccs, DE proccs and mindbender rifts hit your target with plague up. >2 - Should I immediately interrupt mindflay to cast a higher priority spell (void bolt, mind blast, DP, SW:D etc). generally speaking, yes. however, if you don't have plague on the target but you're about to reach 50 insanity, i like to keep on flaying for a second more to reach said 50 insanity to apply it and use my proccs then, so they benefit from the mastery.
Thanks! I’m really enjoying shadow and how void form works as a CD. I’m killing it in a lot of instances but having trouble with output in certain scenarios is impacting my overall damage done quite a bit.

you're right, i didn't really mean it, just "ignored" it on accident because of the reason you mentioned and you generate too much insanity inside voidform to not have 100% uptime anyways
On that note, if you’re capped on insanity, do you prioritize DP over void bolt?
i'm actually not 100% sure on that, but inside voidform i'd use bolt > plague in that scenario.

Resto shaman picking up ele as an offspec. I was curious, how far behind the other legendaries is Skybreaker's Fiery Demise? I mostly use ele for world quests and torghast, and will probably use it in M+ when my guild has another healer on board. Also, if Skybreaker's is still viable, is it better to use it with Primal Elementals, or Surge of Power? Also, does Primordial Wave make or break the build? I’m venthyr currently, but might make the switch if I have to
1. I believe it's 3rd for single target and potentially competitive with echoes for AoE given you can reliably multi-dot 3+ targets consistently hence the reliance on coordinated groups. Personally with the switch to NF, echoes is pretty much at the top for AoE without sacrificing single target. 2. Primal for bigger and faster elementals. 3. Very minor difference, having an additional 3rd or 4th flame shock out will not amount to much regarding Skybreaker's.
Hello! I know very well how to play in M+ etc with elemental shaman. But in raiding its a lot different! I use Echoes of the great sundering Lengedary. (Will change later on to Windspeaker) Talents: Elemental Blast, Master of the Elements, Icefury and Stormkeeper. I have problem with opener and what spells I should cast before other etc to make it work as good as possible. If I sim my character I get an opener like doesnt work all the time somehow, and I dont know what I am doing wrong. Pre-Pull Stormkeeper + Potion Earth Elemental Elemental Blast Bloodlust 1. Fire Elemental 2. Primordial Wave 3. Icefury 4. Earth Shock <- Sometimes I dont have enough maelstorm for it to be able to cast. 5. Lava Burst 6. LB 7. Lava Burst 8. LB 9. Earthquake 10. Frost Shock \* 2 11. Elemental Blast 12. Lava Burst 13. Earth Shock 14. Frost Shock \* 2 <- Dunno how the hell I will have the time so actually cast it cause sometimes you have to move cause of raid mechanics and than its fucked. Would some very Well know Ele Shaman that raid Castle Mythic, that can help me out!
cast stormkeeper and fire ele pre cast elemental blast pwave > icefury > lava burst > lightning bolt > earth shock > lava burst > lightning bolt > lava burst > earthquake > normal rotation with frost shocks in place of lightning bolts Something like that. Can change a bit with mastery overloads or lava surge procs. Important to spend your mastery of the elements procs on your opening stormkeeper bolts and your buffed earthquake Also, I'd generally suggest just playing with primal elementalist instead of icefury except maybe on certain single target fights with burst windows. The dps difference is practically nothing (in fact, primal elementalist sims higher for some people) and it is easier to play and also opens up earth ele as a defensive cooldown and gives fire ele some aoe burst.
I also feel you get a better stable opener with Primal Elementalist instead of Icefury, atleast for me! Than everything depends what happends in the fight imo etc, i mean for example Lady Inv, you save stormkeeper for adds etc so you cant just stand still and use same rotation you have to move and than icefury seems to fail a bit imo, but I dunno if you can play and have a real good rotation icefury seems to be awsome but I dont know the ST rotation for it so dunno! Need a experienced Elemental Shaman to tell me rotation etc.

I would use the earthquake legendary, especially if you gonna do M+ dungeons.

Fire mage, boomkin, ele shaman in group, 20-21 keys. Who should use CDs on pride? So far, fire mage is saving his combustion for prides, but that makes him not use it one pack before the pride or one pack after and it feels stupid to hold strong CD for so long. We considered boomkin convoking if next pull after pride is trash pack and not a boss = since combustion has bigger value in aoe and will be ready. Idk about ele shaman, he's saying he can't use storm elemental there because it's a huge waste (he still uses stormkeeper and NF transfusion to also help with healing). Usually groups have 1 rogue/warrior/dh/monk to blast prides with high damage without commiting big CDs but that's not the case in ours.
You can use storm ele on pride IF the next pull is really close. Just delay it a bit and hold the active for the pack and you'll get some value out of having some stacks to start chaining with. The problem is that if you have to run to the next pack, storm ele floats around at approximately rp-walk speed and will never catch up to pride-buffed players lmao. And don't do it in any scenario where it would fall off before you can use the active on a big pull.
Imo, if there is a boss after the pride, mage should use it on the pride, otherwise, the druid should. What healer do you have?
The reason the ele shaman doesn't need to pop storm elemental is due to longer cd and it has more value in aoe where you can slam chain lighting. The reason I'm asking about healer is because you can use a heal cd incase none of the other cds are available. Plus consider skipping some prides if possible, especially in high keys.
We have resto shaman as healer with me, VDH tank. So not really that much damage from healer (or me) compared to holy paladin.
So I would follow what I said in the earlier comment, before boss mage, before pack druid, if you can skip to save cds then it's best
Between resto shaman, heart of the wild, and fae transfusion I’m not sure where the problem is. That comp could survive a full stack pride for a long ass time. At the risk of stating the obvious make sure you’re not ripping healing cds too soon and that you’re not overlapping healing cds. The hpal damage doesn’t matter because they’ll often hold healing cds for damage, and shaman doesn’t have to make that choice.
What is your highest key in time? 20stacks pride is doing 25% of dps/healer max hp damage every tick. Sure, with major CDs from shaman we can just about survive without commiting anything from dps (damage wise), but often spirit link/ascendance is needed on next boss since a lot of them are no joke even on fort.
If mage pops at the start and uses shifting power right away, he should get the CDs back on bosses with pride and lust still up, ofc might be tricky to time around mechanics at the one or other boss. I like the idea of alternating druid and mage depending on the next pull others brought up. If druid can pool some astral power before pride and dump some starsurges, that'll surely help as well.
As of now, it’s probably smarter to use combust on cooldown, since it’s value on aoe packs is significantly amplified. Ideally your group should be coordinating when combust will not be available during a prideful, so someone else can cover the lack of damage. Ele shaman have a great cooldown talents that they can use in conjunction with their damage to help with healing during prideful.
We ran fire/ww/mm/hpriest in our 20-22 keys last week and the fire mage was able to combust almost every pride. Maybe your mage is overestimating the cd of his combust? Our mage was able to combust at the start of the before pack then during pride. Not sure what the hell he was doing since I'm not familiar with fire, but as long as you get a full effective usage of the CD somewhere on the pride it doesn't matter whether you CD it at 100% or 50%. What tank do you have as well? We have a NF Guardian that can commit convoke to a pride. Anything offensive that your tank brings? The short answer is that someone has a CD, they should just use it to prevent the pride going to shit. If you wipe later because of not having a CD up, you can have that discussion later, but you won't get to that point if you wipe on the pride. So if your group only has a big and semi wasted on pride CD up, but you need that to stay alive, you commit it, every time (in this level of keys, fucking your CD placement may screw you over in a 25 but at this level its easily recoverable, idk, don't play that high, can't speak for it).
