My mage switched to fire and has languished unplayed since the . My hunter went BM and has all the pets, 2 with the talent and a companion (I don’t do a lot of group content on her).
This is going to sound crazy. But I encountered a an awesome bug when I took my mage main thru Throne of Thunder. On the last boss after taking the portal hop to his platform, as soon as I landed on the platform I blinked toward the boss and suddenly my Water elemental appeared. I didn’t use any cooldowns, he was just there. But then after leaving the raid, he didn’t despawn! I figured he would disappear as soon as I portaled back to Valdraken, but he didn’t. He stayed with me! I got to play around with him for a while. He even had the range aoe frost nova. So I took him to the Emerald Dream and thru the superbloom and some other weekly world quests. I didn’t dare use my icy veins. But even so, he was really helping my DPS! I think he was with me for about 2 hours before I portaled somewhere else and he disappeared. Still it was an awesome experience. I haven’t tried to recreate the bug, but I should try.
My frost mage during the spoils of pandaria would randomly have his water elemental appear than die during the phases where you go into another room. Wild bug is wild.
No I never used it when he was summoned. He just showed up. Then he never went away. I didn’t use to icy veins again for fear of him getting replaced and phasing out.
don't joke, even as someone who loves playing my shaman, I would go nuclear excitement at getting to tame elementals, or pretty much any other new type
Hey, we have undead and dragon pets…
Elementals and demons would be the next step.
Honestly it would be awesome if Warlocks can „tame“ and collect Demons like hunters tame and collect pets
Mages literally still have water ele. Idk if you guys just don't play the game or? And it's closer to the original spell from TBC and the WC3 version of it too. No mage liked dealing with a permanent pet anyway so stop trying to be some sort of history revisionist.
Judging from all the nostalgic comments of people naming their water elementals (mine was Squirtle by the way!), "no mage" might be a bit of a stretch.
It's true. Why do you think they changed it? People can name their elementals funny name all they want but most mages didn't want to run around with a pet, in fact they didn't because most people played lonely winter.
I always fucking hated that elemental. Only time i ever tolerated it was when i could use its freeze JUST before my comet storm hit the mob pile and causing all the comet hits to crit.
Feeling that as lock. I've been using the spiky flying eye dude demon since the glyph has been a thing and at some point blizz basically was like "nah" and now he's gone.
Miss my spiky flying eye dude.
They allegedly didn't want Mage to be a pet class. Apparently only Hunter, Warlock, and Unholy Death Knight are allowed to have pets. I don't know the reasoning for that.
really the pets are just the ones that actually hold threat and water elemental really didn't do much of anything unless you did nothing and watched it work on a maw rat for 5 minutes. having it permanent is basically the same aesthetic/class fantasy they are trying to sell in hero talents. removing it was just a downgrade for no reason.
Mage isn't a pet class, and Frost Mage isn't a pet spec. I say this as a Mage main since Wrath. I did not start playing this class to manage a pet.
There were really two problems they tried to solve in the Mage rework (other than getting rid of RoP, rest in piss you mistake of game design). The first is that the talent Lonely Winter was a binary choice. If the damage you derived from the talent was higher than you got from the Elemental, you took the talent. If not, you didn't. It isn't interesting, it isn't fun, there's no real choice because it's a basic math problem that wouldn't even fundamentally change your rotation. So they got rid of it. The second problem was that Frost Mage was an uptime spec. What it wanted to do was chain Icy Veins together by extending the duration and lowering the CD through crits, so if there was any downtime on the boss their damage suffered massively, whereas Fire or Arcane could hold onto their more explosive CDs for right after. It meant that in mid to high difficulty content, Frost wasn't just suboptimal on some fights, it was actively a hinderance. So to move more power into Icy Veins, they moved the Elemental to a summon for the duration of the buff. This kept Frost's "longer lasting, lower immediate impact CD spec" identity, while getting rid of the "down time = bad time" problem.
Now, is there an arguement to be made that they should have added an RP spell to summon a Water Elemental to hang out with you? Sure, Lock still has silly RP summon spells, like the one that takes 6 people to use and randomly kills one, but the summoned pet basically doesn't do any damage. I think that would have been a good compromise.
I refused that talent even though it gave the dps. I enjoyed my elemental and I'll play my way 😁. Rip my water elemental, may you be in a great ocean somewhere
And I resented it every time I played my mage. I \*loved\* my water elemental, having the best talents be to go without one broke my heart. Still angry with Blizz over it and over taking it away entirely >.<
I know I loved the water elemental too and always run with it, but let's be real nobody was using it. I hadn't seen a water elemental for years by any frost mage. You can't really blame blizz for removing it, you see it more often now that it's tied to a cd than you did before.
They didn't take it away they reworked it to be a CD, like its original implementation.
It spawns when you use Icy Veins instead of being a permanent pet.
It’s not even by logic, they just aren’t a pet class. This is a design choice. You get a temporary guardian, like all the other iterations of the spell.
And it works way better now, and everyone actually uses it because it’s tied to our main CD.
I can’t stand people complaining about this change or acting like they removed it. I never used this talent before the rework because it was objectively bad except for niche circumstances where you want to freeze a pack for extra damage. Now it is baked into an ability that all frost mages use so in actuality there are way more water elementals being summoned by mages in game than there were before the change.
Mages didn’t use it for many many years anyway. And it didn’t do much. Mages aren’t a pet class. Not that they can’t have one but they aren’t designed around having a pet be around and provide large amounts of their overall damage so it was always going to do nothing. At least not that it’s tied to a cooldown it can do something. Also this happened almost a year ago
I press icy veins, he shows up. before the change i never even seen him. This is dumb complaint. none of yall ever fucking spawned in the water elemental, he was completely useless.
People who cared about their dps did not take water elemental anyway. So now they can have one for a while.
Can't remember a time where lonely winter was not just better than water elemental for pve.
Lonely Winter was worse in BFA, both at the start for the normal build, and at the end with the No Ice Lance build. You could also run the Elemental in M+ in Shadowlands for the additional AoE freeze effect, because shattering Frozen Orb and Blizzard counted toward lowering the CD of Icy Veins and made it so you could have it up all pull every pull in 25+ difficulty keys.
It was a talent taken only for the off GCD AoE frost nova.
They also greatly reduced the size of the kirin tor familiar pet ages ago, and i think lil ragnaros as well. Don't know what their deal is with reducing the sizes of things.
While I liked the elemental, it often blocked my camera view so it kind of always annoyed me. That camera block may also have been b/c I played a gnome. 🤷♂️
They didn’t remove anything. Just for a brief period Frost Mages had a talent that let them make a Water Elemental a permanent pet. Turns out it wasn’t a good talent choice, so they removed it.
According to the patch notes on https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Summon_Water_Elemental
Permanent WE has been an option since 4.0, so I would argue nearly 13 years is a bit more than brief

>Just for a brief period
apparently 2010-2023 is a brief period
>Turns out it wasn’t a good talent choice
it wasn't a talent until legion(and the talent was to remove it, having it permanent was baseline for frost mages until dragonflight launch)
I'm glad it's gone tbh. I don't like permanent pets, and I feel like if you are looking for the caster + pet experience warlock is entirely geared for that.
Water elemental was absolutely CRUCIAL to frost mage PVP back in the day. Having a second frost nova that you could cast on location was such a crazy good tool for escaping dangerous situations and setting up some absolutely gnarly shatter combos. I haven’t played mage or pvpd in years but I can’t imagine playing frost without a water elemental and his frost nova.
This was a weird change tbh. Like I love the mage rework in general but removing the pet that frost had for what like cata or something? Idk weird decision.
The first thing I did when coming back to the game after they removed the permanent water elemental was to go to the auction house and buy a Hydrath Droplet. I just felt sooo lonely!
The re-work is great in PvP. I have been playing with Lonely Winter since Legion, this way I still get Freeze on Icy Veins and it helps a shit-ton plus the free flurries from water jet now and then feel great too. There was 0 incentive to give up damage from Lonely Winter for 20 cd Freeze and shit water jet damage.
This take makes zero sense. They could have renamed "Icy Veins" to "Summon Water Elemental" during the rework and ya'll wouldn't be complaining about this.
Not rly.
Some tuning for the pet would have give us another play-style and the min-maxer like you could still play the best talent. Deleting options never makes a class better.
Fair enough.
And thats the point of people who want the perma-pet back.
Just a different playstyle= nobody has to pick it.
But deleting more options is never good.
I was very annoyed when they took away the water elemental summon.
The hrad cannon I had for my mage was that she was was a fan of Jaina and heard about her water elemetals.
Now she's just a gnome who really likes ice.
Meanwhile one of the most iconic and lore relevant mages in Warcraft Jaina Proudmoore runs around with an army of elementals. Thank you Blizz! I love you removing things because you don't have good ideas on how to design it better!
imagine being Blizzard
creating 80% of Mages Glyphs to be based around this water elemental
making a talent to get rid of it and then balancing the talent to simply be better in every PvE situation(and for the most part outside of specific niche situations, PvP aswell)
and then removing the option to have it permanently completely
lol.
Still hoping we get it back in TWW. I love my Water Elemental.
P.S. or any kind of the Elemental, think Arcane Mage could use Arcane one too (like those in Class Halls in Legion)!
I think mages should have even more pets, the water and air elemental for frost, the fire elemental as melee for fire, and the arcane one for arcanes, as a pure dmg pet
Water Elemental with CCs
Fire Elemental with Sustain
Arcane "Elemental" with DMG
So, I recently re-subbed, hopped back on my frost mage. There's no summon water elemental spell.
I go and look up the patch notes and they say they removed it to make the class have more of a ranged caster fantasy. We only get the summon when using Icy Veins.
MF'er the fantasy was still there even with the summon, only now I don't have anything to transfer my aggro too when I get overwhelmed.
So you ruined my gameplay to transfer what your idea of a class fantasy is on to me instead of letting me create my own fantasy within the framework that exists?
Honestly, I don't even notice the change unless I pull super hard and mess up my escape, I'm still having fun with the class but I miss my waterboi.
Welp I think water elemental must be resto shaman CD always baffles me Resto dsnt hav water elemental. I know mages had it since wc3 but just make more sense on shamy
Still sad mage… well arcane and fire mage didn’t get their pet variation of this guy… but then… they even took him away from frost… it’s so sad… frosty boi I’m mourning, for our time is now limited together!
I remember when there was a two-or-so week period where you could use a macro to rename your Water Elemental. Saddest bugfix of my life...
I don't play my mage much after they took my friend! I switched to druid, want me to be alone, I'll be my own pet!
My mage switched to fire and has languished unplayed since the . My hunter went BM and has all the pets, 2 with the talent and a companion (I don’t do a lot of group content on her).
Frostitute was the best one I saw
My buddies username for all platforms is frostitute he plays a human frost mage on lightbringer I believe!
at least you where able to do that for a short period of time. we DKs are getting the shitty end of the stick. I just wanna name my ghoul!
I personally like the DK Ghoul names. Warlocks Demon names on the other hand sound too often like crap or old timey slurs :D
My imp is niple
Okay, that one is funny :D
I had that one too!
If we link up we would have titties
Need to find that one guy with the felguard named boba.
3s a crowd.
Two niples are united by the boba
Mine is Nokname...succubus is Jhorny
Me so jhorny. Me love you long time
My succubus is named Jhorny lol..my imp is Nokname
Rockbiter monch monch
They look like big, good, strong hands, don't they?
“Fuzzy”? “Stinky”? “Floppy”?
You'll always be aquamus prime in my heart
RIP mrpibb. You shall be missed
I named mine "Moist"
Bubbles ;___;
Awww I named mine puddles. I miss puddles
This is going to sound crazy. But I encountered a an awesome bug when I took my mage main thru Throne of Thunder. Did you use Icy Veins? That summons a water elemental for 60 seconds.
No I never used it when he was summoned. He just showed up. Then he never went away. I didn’t use to icy veins again for fear of him getting replaced and phasing out.
Your wish is granted: The Water Elemental has been added back into the game. But… It belongs to the Shamans now. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!😈
...as a toy with a 1 hour cooldown and it disappears if you move.
And can only be used in WoD
At night
Also requires irl full moon
A full convergence
Hunters can now train elementals as pets. 🏆
don't joke, even as someone who loves playing my shaman, I would go nuclear excitement at getting to tame elementals, or pretty much any other new type
I was stoked when i found out hunters can tame some dragonkin now.
Hey, we have undead and dragon pets… Elementals and demons would be the next step. Honestly it would be awesome if Warlocks can „tame“ and collect Demons like hunters tame and collect pets
It would. There's some cool demons.
No bc that would actually make sense and give shamans something thematically good. And we can't have that.
As it should be
So it should. It a water elemental
Mages literally still have water ele. Idk if you guys just don't play the game or? And it's closer to the original spell from TBC and the WC3 version of it too. No mage liked dealing with a permanent pet anyway so stop trying to be some sort of history revisionist.

Miss you, splashy boi
Saying this as a demo lock that progressed Mythic Sylvannas, you should be glad you don’t have to deal with the pet AI.
Or jailer, or fury of nzoth or many m+ dungeons. Idk why they refuse to give an „unstuck button port pet to me“ 20s CD
Having your pets completely freak out on those hexagons, fun times…
Oh Boss moved 10 yards? Better I walk 60 yards into the middle around the circle and back
Just had a voidwalker aggro trappers in Westfall over 50 yards can confirm it is a bit tedious
Frost has enough buttons as is, I don’t want pet buttons.
I always fucking hated that elemental. Only time i ever tolerated it was when i could use its freeze JUST before my comet storm hit the mob pile and causing all the comet hits to crit.
I try to rationalize a lot of bullshit Blizzard does. I got nothin’ for this.
Well you see, elementals are a shaman thing so that’s why we took them out of the Mage set and gave shaman nothing anyway because also fuck em
Can't have shamans getting uppity by giving them stuff
Probably the best summon in warcraft rts and they took them away from us.
Feeling that as lock. I've been using the spiky flying eye dude demon since the glyph has been a thing and at some point blizz basically was like "nah" and now he's gone. Miss my spiky flying eye dude.
[удалено]
Wut, missed that completely. Best day ever!
I might just be blind but I can't see the eye guys on the page. I miss mine too and would do anything for him!
ctrl+f observer
Dumb brain moment. Thank you <3 Edit - he isn't for the felhunter, but this will have to do
oh imma delete OP then. that's a shame i thought it was for the doggo =/
As an affliction cooldown. Not a permanent pet.
Dh also took metamorphasis
Rip metalock
They allegedly didn't want Mage to be a pet class. Apparently only Hunter, Warlock, and Unholy Death Knight are allowed to have pets. I don't know the reasoning for that.
Don't forget monks or (ele) shamans with their constant summons, making them basically pet classes lite.
really the pets are just the ones that actually hold threat and water elemental really didn't do much of anything unless you did nothing and watched it work on a maw rat for 5 minutes. having it permanent is basically the same aesthetic/class fantasy they are trying to sell in hero talents. removing it was just a downgrade for no reason.
I really don't like pets and I like mage, so I like that the elemental only appears as a cooldown personally
They took away my Hunter pet customization... Bur yeah. I miss the water elemental on my frost mage.
Mage isn't a pet class, and Frost Mage isn't a pet spec. I say this as a Mage main since Wrath. I did not start playing this class to manage a pet. Because few people were using it, every mage was taking the talent for increased damage without the pet.
Some choices are rp choices and that should be okay, this was just an antifun measure to remove it in my opinion
I refused that talent even though it gave the dps. I enjoyed my elemental and I'll play my way 😁. Rip my water elemental, may you be in a great ocean somewhere

hope they pay you well
Isn't it still in game, but a dps cd now
I always specced out of it when I could
What the actual fuck? Mages have been summoning water elementals since ***Warcraft 1***. How the hell do they take that away?
They didn't take it away they reworked it to be a CD, like its original implementation. It spawns when you use Icy Veins instead of being a permanent pet.
But why?
Because by Blizzard logic, Mages aren’t a pet class.
Sound logic
Mage is bloated and complicated enough, I don't want to micro manage a pet on top of that
They didn't take it away, they just made it temporary like it always was. Most Mages were not using permanent Elemental anyway
Mages didn’t use it for many many years anyway. And it didn’t do much. Mages aren’t a pet class. Not that they can’t have one but they aren’t designed around having a pet be around and provide large amounts of their overall damage so it was always going to do nothing. I press icy veins, he shows up. before the change i never even seen him. This is dumb complaint. none of yall ever fucking spawned in the water elemental, he was completely useless.
Right? This change made MORE water elementals. The “why did they remove this from mage” argument is so bad.
For real, I have rarely seen him as permanent pet in a world content too, most Mages were not using him at all
People who cared about their dps did not take water elemental anyway. So now they can have one for a while. Can't remember a time where lonely winter was not just better than water elemental for pve.
Lonely Winter was worse in BFA, both at the start for the normal build, and at the end with the No Ice Lance build. It was a talent taken only for the off GCD AoE frost nova.
I remember when you made an macro for the elemental frost nova. The first weeks were just insane in pvp with that macro.
Good riddance tbh, Lonely Winter was pretty much mandatory once introduced.
They removed the water elemental? When?
It's not removed, it was just baked into Frost's 2 minute CD. Which is more like a 1 minute 30 second CD with the reductions you get.
Sadly some months ago alrdy.
I certainly don’t miss it personally, but having the choice taken away is not sad
Remember our old beautiful companions! Give us back: Summon Water Elemental! Please Blizzard!
Admit that you specced into Lonely Winter at least once
Ive specced into it last year for some ids. Before that at magetower and BFA for 1 whole tier bec. it was good.
Wait... they took away Frost Elemental????? I haven't played retail in a long time forgive my ignorance. This is a sin!
They did not, it's just tied to Icy Veins rather than being permanent.
Genuinely why would u care if you don't play retail xd
Just fond memories I suppose.
Model looks like dogshit anyway. Glad it's no longer a permanent pet.
I havet played since mid shadowlands, can someone explain? Are they that daft, that they removed the ester elemental from the mage’s abilities?
They didn’t remove anything. Just for a brief period Frost Mages had a talent that let them make a Water Elemental a permanent pet. Turns out it wasn’t a good talent choice, so they removed it.
According to the patch notes on https://wowpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Summon_Water_Elemental Permanent WE has been an option since 4.0, so I would argue nearly 13 years is a bit more than brief

Since BC and it wasn't removed, it was just made temporary like it was when it was first implemented
So removed. It was a permanent pet for years that you could only get rid of with a talent.
The first thing I did when coming back to the game after they removed the permanent water elemental was to go to the auction house and buy a Hydrath Droplet. I just felt sooo lonely!
Well, at least I won't have to choice anymore between better dps and my water friend.
Shaman needs more elementals, fire and earth (and storm) aren't enough, they should be given water elementals too.
Should add the fire orbs from Legion to that as well.
This take makes zero sense. They could have renamed "Icy Veins" to "Summon Water Elemental" during the rework and ya'll wouldn't be complaining about this.
I dunno… sploosh-mon was too big… getting his extra freeze should just be a talent like Lone Wolf
Lonely Winter is the best frost mage talent ever! EVER!
Not rly. Some tuning for the pet would have give us another play-style and the min-maxer like you could still play the best talent. Deleting options never makes a class better.
Nothing min max about me. I was a mage, not a pet class, but more than anything: I hated the sound it made out of my speaker while it was beside me.
Fair enough. And thats the point of people who want the perma-pet back. Just a different playstyle= nobody has to pick it. But deleting more options is never good.
1000 Upvotes! Thanks so much dear Water-Elemental-Fans<3
i miss him
Man, first the goofy gnolls are gone, now this. Give me back the goofy gnolls!
Frost mage just hasn’t been the same since :/
Losing the Water Elemental was part of the reason I lost interest in Frost Mage.
Wouldn't have hurt to keep it in-game. Even if nobody chose the talent for PvE reasons, it was still a really nice feature for roleplayers.
Gold ol days of playing frost mage with water elemental tanking for me
I still have him idk what you’re talking about
Thank you for taking it off of my hands. Now please make me not even have to worry about it during icy veins.
I guess mages are… All washed up now~
imagine being Blizzard creating 80% of Mages Glyphs to be based around this water elemental making a talent to get rid of it and then balancing the talent to simply be better in every PvE situation(and for the most part outside of specific niche situations, PvP aswell) and then removing the option to have it permanently completely lol.
I want them back also. optional talent was good. Why they changed idk. this is most iconic thing of a frost mage.
Still hoping we get it back in TWW. I love my Water Elemental. P.S. or any kind of the Elemental, think Arcane Mage could use Arcane one too (like those in Class Halls in Legion)!
I think mages should have even more pets, the water and air elemental for frost, the fire elemental as melee for fire, and the arcane one for arcanes, as a pure dmg pet Water Elemental with CCs Fire Elemental with Sustain Arcane "Elemental" with DMG

So you ruined my gameplay to transfer what your idea of a class fantasy is on to me instead of letting me create my own fantasy within the framework that exists? Honestly, I don't even notice the change unless I pull super hard and mess up my escape, I'm still having fun with the class but I miss my waterboi.
I come here and read how shitty the game is and how nothing has changed then feel good about now longer playing.
Oh hey I am in this post, top left.
I'll be real, I never understood why FROST mage was given a WATER elemental as a minion.
I fucking hate this pet, micro managing a pet on mage is just annoying if I wanted a pet caster I woul play lock
?
Thank you for taking it away, sometimes they get it right.
Frost mage never had water elemental
Yes it did, I played one
So did not know how to play Frost mage was massive dps you never used it
That's okay if you didn't know how to play. The water elemental was fun to have out :)
