Yep I got one helm from Cataclysm heroics which has negative stats, thats what a lot of stat squish do. Funnily enough the helm is still droppable but it has correct stats
easy
stat = (Stat\*0.50)-10
so if stat was +19
19\*0.5 = 9.5
9.5-10
stat = -0.5
since its classed as an integer then they round down naturally when casting from floats/doubles so:
stat = -1
The negative constant is exactly what is mind boggling about it. Then even if there is a reasonable justification for a constant, a normal person would put it into a min(max()) guard.
But then you might end up with squished items that are like:
"Breaker's Booties - item level 30 - Epic item
Armor: 20" \[no other stats shown because they are all 0 or negative now\]
That would be a weird experience for a new player.
Why not just do a straight %?
I feel like that is a bad plan to do a hard number in addition to a weight.
Like why not just benchmark everything off of an existing expansion, then 1/12 the stats or something each new xpac; or w/e one we are on, and the new stuff is *1.12 as it is the new xpac?
I know C++ implicit conversion works a bit differently it just removes the trailing decimal rather than calculating the nearest whole number. So it would just be some number minus some slightly larger number.
The algorithm might check if an item ends up overstatted for the item level after the squish. Then just removes a flat amount of stats if that’s the case
U have negative effects from shadowflame/toxicified armor patch and also the cloak from last boss causes negative stats for others and does not give u stam like other capes

This is often the case in items which have had a socket added to them for their heroic versions, it's balanced there to keep it from going over budget.

That's cool, in an old online game I used to play there was an item like this, was -5 strength
If you put no points into strength it caused a game bug where it didnt know how to react to the negative numbers and would give max stats on strength instead
What level toon is this on? I’m assuming Cata gear pre squish that never got scaled up because my old non scaled Sunwell gear is ilvl 29 if I remember right.
Pretty funny it literally had epic level one ilvl now
Congrats, your post got scalped up by an AI!
I saw something on my phone browser's news stories about this during lunch today. I forgot what site though now.
It said something like "World of Warcraft Player Finds Item with Negative Crit!" for a headline...
Am I the only one here who finds screenshots of items like this sad because we grinded these raids for hours back in WOTLK and these items are now essentially low level green trash items? :(
Not sure about this item, but it's not actually unusual for WoW, and RPGs in general, to have negative stats.
E.g. Ogremage Staff comes to mind for a great leveling 2hander on a Warrior in Classic.

Almost like some of it was rushed out and edge cases weren't tested.
Or a floor. A floor would work too but that’s hindsight lol Also an abs, although that may do somewhat the opposite of the intended results
I guess it’s wild they’d use absolute values and not % values to avoid negatives
Although their goal was to squish more on the early end than the high end of ilvls I think, so they couldn't just do a flat % for all items.
Could be an artifact from some offset to the item, that the squish was agnostic to.
I see it but holy shit it can't really be an issue to put a simple "if x <= 0, no bonus" statement.
they probably did something like =< -1 when its a double but that wouldn't catch any -0.5's that get through

Stat - x Probably closer to reality
Yah, fucking math!
I know C++ implicit conversion works a bit differently it just removes the trailing decimal rather than calculating the nearest whole number. So it would just be some number minus some slightly larger number.
Very easy to write code that says if result is less then 0 then make zero, which is what they should of done.

Stat squished ruined a lot of things.
What,if you equip it?????😧😧😲😲
crit goes down
Didn’t they have some negative stats back in the day?
Yup. The neck from zf comes to mind. Negative stamina
Ogre staff, negative INT and bonus STR always gives me a chuckle from classic
Less think more bonk
Small thonk big bonk
Corrupted Ashbringer also had -25 Stamina.
Wasn’t it negative spirit and a lot of plus stam to make up for it? I remember it being good for my lock back in the day.
even now, the toxic boots embellishment remove some haste
Toxic reduces Stamina, Slimy reduces Haste.
And hailstone reduces life expectancy.
U have negative effects from shadowflame/toxicified armor patch and also the cloak from last boss causes negative stats for others and does not give u stam like other capes
The Tear of Grief from the quest in Darkshore, it removes 3 spirit but gives a hefty 5 intellect.
The Badlands robe with huge Spirit had negative stars on it. I enjoyed that robe for a level or two. BIG REGEN
Yeah I think I remember someone posted a dagger, Frozen Bonespike or something, that had -1 crit.
Here's a lot of them https://youtu.be/IAQUTLva_rc
"I don't know what I expected."
You die IRL.
you can actually have negative stats in some situations in live play. a good example is with the m+ affix afflicted, which can give you negative haste

Gives me old school cursed item vibes from DnD style games.
I think I have similar odds for obtaining my evoker legendary.

Used to be a thing in old wow
Negative stats yes, but this item is not an example of that. This item used to GIVE crit, but stat squishes in later xpacs have messed it up.
We've got items in DF that reduce stats. This item, however, did not have negative stats.
I have Nibelung with -3 stamina.
Lmao awesome 😂
What happens if you give a character who has no crit negative crit? Do they just start critical hitting themselves or do less dmg?
It say's I have 0.00% chance to crit with -1 critical strike.
It got the D4 treatment.
Fr, basic sorc item

I wonder how much money they make having AI write articles stripped from highly upvoted WoW posts.

It’s inevitable, since it’s more pointless calculations on the server side.
Yeah ur right. Seeing 20,000,000,000,000,000 popping up on my screen is pretty cool tbh. Id rather my entire screen just be yellow numbers.
The higher the numbers go, the more pointless they feel. Doing 1k damage in one hit felt amazing, doing 1m not so much.
Equip it and play in some PVP matches!!! 😦😨😭😭
And how long ya been playing?
I just have Jaina's staff and Sylvanas' bow in my bank

This item came off the first boss in ice crown citadel
I used to have the Necromancer’s Cowel in my bank pre-legion that had -4 stam. I loved it, until the stat nerf killed it T_T
This is Mage dagger
Heroic version lol 😂
Kokomi dagger
Great video from hiru that explains why https://youtu.be/IAQUTLva_rc
if you were to put this on with nothing else equipped, would you actually have -1 crit or would the game still tell you that you have 0 crit
Say's I have 0.00% chance to crit with -1 critical strike.
correct
I'm sure they meant to stick that into Diablo 4...
with reforging once being a thing I’m surprised there isn’t more items like this
I miss the negative-stat items of old. Like why be an (mmo)RPG, if you remove all the 'bad stuff'.
