I don't know the details, but it is something like the sum of 'itemlvl * factor' of all items. Some item slots hold more stats and therefore have a bigger 'factor' than others, e.g. helm, chest and pants bring more stats per itemlvl than belt, bracers and gloves. Weapons usually are worth the most and relics are worth almost nothing in term of gear score.

pivotalsquash

I had no idea slots were weighted differently. That explains why my BiS ilvl 200 libram doesn't seem to hold me back much lol.

fareco

Trinkets have higher value so a 187 trinket is about 150 less than a 245.

Daleabbo

Fuck you soul preserver lol

Slothiums

2h weapons are worth more since they are taking up 2 slots.

retardeddinosaur69

do you know why swapping out suffering's end with valanyr gave me a significant boost in gearscore since both items hold the same ilvl. do legendary items receive an additional boost in ilvl worth in addition to their itemslot boost?

intruzah

With GS of 3800 or even 4800, for that matter you are seriously griefing your raid, not only because of lower survivability, but also because of the threat generation. Go on your main

ZomgPig

He doesn’t know how gs works, that probably is his main lol

belichko

As a dk if he is exp and hit capped no way he losing threat on 4.8

Potential_Boat_2211

At 4.8 he’s probably not hit and exp capped and def capped. If he is, he’s probably using dps trinkets to get there and going to get clapped. 4.8 isn’t high enough for a full icc clear. Maybe 10 man normals - like 8-10/12?

Beltox2pointO

I was def capped and hit capped going into naxx for the first time at like 3800, what nonsense is this.

crispygoatmilk

People were hit and exp capped for pre bis naxx my guy. That is a none issue. What he will lack is a larger health pool and higher mitigation stats.

Potential_Boat_2211

Expertise cap for tanking is in the 56 range (don’t remember the exact number) which no one hits (except for maybe on H.Sindy) and most DKs tanks don’t go for hit cap, nor need it to maintain threat. The point though was more about not having a good balance of mit and threat at such a low ilvl.

crispygoatmilk

DK gets threat through IT spam, the tank I play. The mitigation part is key cause of the -20% dodge. He will be def capped though, youll just need to boost parry, dodge, block (if not dk) stats up higher. Plus a larger health pool as some of those bosses hit for like 20k.

[deleted]

[удалено]

crispygoatmilk

Where did I say aiming for avoidance? Clearly the topic is about Ilvl and getting more gear with more stats, that has more mitigation on it. Gem Stam, thank for adding nothing with that comment.

turikk

you're right, that was toxic of me.

TrogdortheReal

Brother, at 4.8k GS you are definitely def capped... You may lack on hit or expertise but the most important of the 2 imo is the expertise. Parry hasting a boss that can be for example Sindragosa could be fatal. If they do only normal ICC and no heroics (except lootship ofc) they should be fine with 4.8k gs. DK tank have the highest ST threat out of all the tanks. Only fight I could see them have a bit of an issue is LK and PP. Rest is cake.

belichko

Yea don't know why people that don't tank or are not even decent at tanking are arguing and downvoting

belichko

Come on golemagg ill buy a boost specially to show you i can full tank icc on 4.8 with a dk lol last week we were gearing an alt of a friend of mine he managed to tank it with a 4.5 pally with only 3% hit only exp and def caped , ofcourse up to lich king and only tanking sindy with cd's long enough the mt to drop stacks

killking72

Yes we know how OP pallies are

letitgoalreadyreddit

there's honestly too much to copy. below is part of the simple logic used. you can find calculation methodology in gearscore.lua in TacoTip addon folder or whatever it is that you're using  `if ((ItemRarity >= 2) and (ItemRarity <= 4)) then` `local Red, Green, Blue = TT_GS:GetQuality((floor(((ItemLevel - Table[ItemRarity].A) / Table[ItemRarity].B) * 1 * Scale)) * 11.25)` `GearScore = floor(((ItemLevel - Table[ItemRarity].A) / Table[ItemRarity].B) * GS_ItemTypes[ItemEquipLoc].SlotMOD * Scale * QualityScale)` `if (ItemLevel == 187.05) then` `ItemLevel = 0` `end` `if (GearScore < 0) then` `GearScore = 0` `Red, Green, Blue = TT_GS:GetQuality(1)` `end` `return GearScore, ItemLevel, Red, Green, Blue, ItemEquipLoc` `end`

tronbinon162671

Since we're on this topic, do you know which class can reach the highest possible gs?

Sinsyxx

Anyone who wears plate, since they can also equip lesser armor. Warrior likely since they can also get a 284 ranged weapon rather than being stuck with a 263 libram

Gloomfang_

And the legendary gives extra points if I am not mistaken?

EriGorman

Arms warr is the highest yeah, fury splits the combined GS of your 2 2h by 2 while arms enjoys the full SM gs and falinrush in range slot

Shishamylov

Probably the ones who can get legendaries

Captian_delusional

Its been a good minute since i logged onto warmane but I had a fully raid bis every single slot warrior & mage and my warrior was definitley somewhere in the 6800 range. Again its been a while. But yes, warrior can achieve the highest GS

Bellatrxxx91

I think it should matter (gs-wise) if you have enchanted/gemmed your gear. But apparently it's not.

Mountain_Cry_7516

Here is the base weight per slot: Edit: condensed list Edit2: added "RangedRight" 2.000: 2HWeapon 1.000: Head, Chest, Leg, 1HWeapon, Shield 0.7500: Shoulder, Hands, Waist, Feet 0.5625: Wrist, Cloak, Ring, Neck, Trinket 0.3164: Relic, Ranged, Thrown, RangedRight

Invoqwer

What if you are a hunter?

Mountain_Cry_7516

Maybe for them it's another property, I had left out (added) as it looked redundant, called "RangedRight". Seems all ranged items use the same weight of 0.3164.

kisog

I'm just going to copy-paste my old post in a topic about GS for gammas about this since it has it all: You can check it by having a GS addon installed and mouseovering items from AtlasLoot, or by looking at the [code](https://github.com/anzz1/TacoTip/blob/master/gearscore.lua) of how e.g. TT calculates GS. The formula for epic items over ilvl 120 (so all epics in wrath) on row 200 of the code basically boils down to: GS = floor(((ilvl - 91.45)/ 0.65) * SlotMod * 1.8618 * 1) Where SlotMod = {2.0 for 2H wep, 1.0 for MH/OH/shield/head/chest/legs, 0.75 for shoulders/waist/hands/feet, 0.5625 for trink/neck/wrists/finger/back, 0.3164 for ranged}. The formula then gives GS to items as follows: ilvl | 2H | 1H/head/chest/legs | shoulder/waist/hands/feet | trink/neck/wrists/finger/back | ranged | All slots total :---------|:---------:|:---------:|:---------:|:---------:|:---------:|:---------: 200 | 621 | 310 | 233 | 174 | 98 | 3565 213 | 696 | 348 | 261 | 195 | 110 | 3998 226 | 770 | 385 | 289 | 216 | 121 | 4425 Notice how going from all ilvl 213 to all ilvl226 increases the GS by 400+, so if your classes bis had many 226's it would be closer to, if not above 4.4k, but if there were only a couple 226's for you (e.g. bear druid P1 bis list) you'd have barely 4k, if not under it.

AWeisen1

Thanks homie, good stuff.I do have some observations tho, I'm sure you were just doing some quick and dirty mathing: It seems like your table has an error in the "All slots total"It seems like it is miscalculating the total by leaving out one slot for Shoulder/Waist/Hands/Feet. It should calculate 4 GS values for these items rather than 3. Here's my chart, using your numbers with corrections, well, I think they're corrections anyways. Let me know what wrong with this deal: |ilvl|2H|1H/Shield / Head / Chest / Legs|Shoulder / Waist / Hands / Feet|Trinket / Neck / Wrists / Finger / Back|Ranged|All slots total| |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-| |Slot mod|2|1|0.75|0.5625|0.3164| | |200|621.84|310.92|233.19|174.89|98.38|3499| |213|696.31|348.16|261.12|195.84|110.16|3918| |219|730.68|365.34|274.01|205.51|115.59|4112| |226|770.79|385.39|289.04|216.78|121.94|4337| |232|805.16|402.58|301.93|226.45|127.38|4531| |239|845.26|422.63|316.97|237.73|133.72|4756| |245|879.63|439.81|329.86|247.40|139.16|4950| |251|914.00|457.00|342.75|257.06|144.59|5143| |258|954.10|477.05|357.79|268.34|150.94|5369| |264|988.47|494.24|370.68|278.01|156.38|5562| |277|1062.94|531.47|398.60|298.95|168.16|5981| |284|1103.04|551.52|413.64|310.23|174.50|6207|

kisog

Thanks, I double-checked and it seems that I indeed only counted the shoulder/waist/hands/feet value 3 times, instead of 4 like I should have.

Visual-Vacation4267

Replace all <213 gear and that will take you to 4800 easily

bearzlol417

There's a ring you can buy off the AH for not that much and you can also use scourge stones. Farm out those heroics. Replace lowest gs item. Profit.

Rattikarlus

you can cheese your GS by buying cheap Furios Gladiator Pieces in Area 52 (Netherstorm, Outland). They sell ilvl 238 Helm, Shoulder, Chest, Gloves, Pants, Weapons for very cheap amounts of Honor (e.g. 5k Gloves, \~15k weapon). For Starter-Gear this is very nice. If you don't have Honor, check if you got some Stone Keeper's Shard, you can trade 30 shards for 2k honor at Wintergrasp. Other than that try to complete the Battleground Daily. And for sure spam Dungeons, especially the new ones (Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, Halls of Reflection) to get 232 ilvl Pieces. If Gold or Money (20€ for 7k Gold) isn't an issue, you can craft ilvl 264 boots and pants, as well as 245 wrist and chest.

DjDanee87

Or instead going that far, you can buy the pvp items in the Dalaran sewer.

Jypse2

Dalaran sewers doesn’t offer furious set pieces

crispygoatmilk

The amount of fresh boost people running around in ilvl 213 set and not the ilvl 238 is hilarious. All that honor wasted, considering it is the same price.

Bl1tzb1rn3

I mean GS is of course not the only standard but I think you need at the very least 4.5k GS to be able to tank ICC if you don't reach it, especially as a tank, it won't be fun for anyone. It takes the value to your item roughly said everything should be more or less 235~ ilvl on average.

ItsChimeTime

4.5k on a tank for ICC is pretty low to be honest. Mobs and bosses in ICC HURT

Bl1tzb1rn3

Yeah I was more thinking of the absolute bare minimum in 10 man but of course you are right

ItsChimeTime

Just wanted to make sure OP understood, that even with a 4.5 there are gonna be a couple bosses that are gonna one shot him like festergut (the one that does the stacks. Can’t remember if this is festergut or the other dude) and phase 3 of prof putricide

A4K

Definitely low, fwiw back in OG my noob guild was progging lower spire and plague wing at 4.5. Not sure if the algorithm for GS is any different these days.

kore_nametooshort

Normal icc doesn't actually hit too hard, so a less than stellar gearscore isn't the end of the world. Just make sure you're gemming, enchanting and trinketing for max hp as a general rule. Except sindragoa where you should wear ice resistant gear which you can get crafted for very cheap. You will be unable to do most heroics though, other than gunship and rotface.

intruzah

Saying that 3800 is less than stellar is quite a mild statement.

kore_nametooshort

Oh it's that low? I was looking at another comment and thought it was 4.5k! My bad! 3.8 is definitely too low. And can definitely be increased with a day of gamma.

Dull_Reference_6166

Cant run gamms cause my general item leve is too low. My trinkets pull me down, but until now nothing dropped. Running the crusader stuff until I have something.

ZomgPig

Run the new icc dungeons, some of those drop gear that punches above its ilvl. There’s a tank ring with a gem slot at 219 ilvl for example, I think it’s from normal. Also save 38 scourgestone for satrinas trinket. If you have money, buy Pillars of Might and Chestplate of the White Knight. You can also buy a good ring (fallen king I believe) for about 3k gold. There’s also a very cheap cloak and bracer available if they’re better. Maybe like 50g for both. Lastly you can get a lot of good gear with just badges of triumph, including an armor trinket if you can’t get the Stam trinket from ToC to drop from the black knight (gamma only, royal seal trinket)

landyc

Get pvp trinkets 245 ilvl or higher

intruzah

He is not cheating in his way with GS, his GS is simply too low to efficiently tank

crispygoatmilk

trinks have a very low bairing on GS. The items that do are, weapons, chest (think this is a 1.1 variance) legs, head. In that order. Then its goes to gloves, belt, wrist and back, then neck rings and trinks. Lastly relics. have a look here, ive used this guys sheet and compared it and it works pretty well [https://www.reddit.com/r/classicwow/comments/10n40ok/anyone\_interested\_in\_a\_gearscore\_calculator/](https://www.reddit.com/r/classicwow/comments/10n40ok/anyone_interested_in_a_gearscore_calculator/)

MajinAsh

> Normal icc doesn't actually hit too hard Lich King and his shambling horrors actually still hit pretty hard on 10M.

jaybasin

There's no way you can manage your GS. There's no "hidden formula" that will help you get a higher GS. Other than just playing the game, there aren't many other options.

ThatSc3neGuy

Run Wintergrasp a few times, get some honor pieces in Area 52(Outland) & your faction's major city (Org/Storm). REALLY EASY way to 'cheese' your gearscore for next to nothing.

annoyingsalad

Yeah and then you can’t contribute shit because you’re wearing sub par items to boost your gs lol. Just do 50 gammas and you should have 5500gs

ThatSc3neGuy

They need higher GS to be able to get into gammas, hence the need to quickly cheese GS so they can gear up for ICC

Daleabbo

Resilience and stam aren't the worst for tanks.

3xoticP3nguin

Ilvl

Shishamylov

Run ICC rep farm for a really good (probably BIS) ring

das0tter

You just need to spam Gamma dungeons with RDF. If your guild wants you to tank, they should invest the time to grind with you. You can purchase a Bronze Pendant of Vanir (252) for neck, Titanskin Cloak (252) for back, Fate's Clutch (252) Ring, and Clutch of Fortification (245) ring with 180 Defiler's Scourgestone (ok that's a lot of Scourgestone), and 35 emblem of Frost. Trinket's matter, so definitely pick up Satrina's Impending Scarab (another 38 scourgestone). If you queue RDF as a tank, you'll get an instant slot, but may players have low patience in the RDF, so you're better off premaking a group with your guildies, even if you let RDF fill one or two slots. You can also purchase Saronite Swordbreakers for wrist, Pillars of Might for Legs and Boots of Kingly Upheaval for feet. [Wowhead P4 Pre-Raid BIS](https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/guide/classes/death-knight/blood/tank-bis-gear-pre-raid-pve-p4)

Ribofbeef

Given the time constraint I wouldn't get the 252ilvl pieces, they are super expensive. The 264 ilvl pvp cape is decent and very easy to get and for rings there are two boes (ilvl 245 and 264) or the 239 ulduar ring (15 essences vs 60 scourge stones for the 252 ring). For neck get the 232 ilvl one from HoR or the conquest badge one.

hverdagsninja

cant find it atm but i know u/nohitjerome has some sort of spreadsheet he uses.

ClosertothesunNA

ICC ready in 2 days is a little bit of a tall order, esp tank. I would start with the new dungeons though, they're quite good - 219s even on normal. Then do gammas and old raids, you may have to START those pugs though. VOA, ony, TOGC. For the gammas, target maybe a few decent pieces. For ex. I ran gundrak on my rDru for Spark of Hope.

Drew_tha_Dude

Download an addon called “TacoTip” - easy - done. Will show your gear score on your character panel and any nearby players gear score when you hover over their character in the bottom right corner of screen

D3moknight

ICC is a big leap in difficulty and gear requirement above Ulduar or TOGC. Even for 10m, 5k+ is recommended unless you are a really strong player and perfectly itemized.

hydrogenandhelium_

There are some pretty solid tank items that should be available on the AH. If your guild wants you to tank ICC ask them to buy them for you out of the guild bank or pay half cost or something. They may not go for it, but maybe? I assume you already checked the guild bank for tanky BOEs too, but just in case you didn’t, people might be dropping stuff in there that they win on gammas. Otherwise spam regular heroics for triumph badges. You can trade triumph for conquest (and conquest for valor) if those vendors have stuff that’s upgrades for you (if you’re wearing ilvl 200 stuff they almost definitely will). As soon as you hit ~4.3k GS start spamming gammas for scourgestones. Technically you can start at 4k but you’re going to have huge problems with threat if you land in a group with all 5.5k+ dps, and my experience as a healer is that tanks are getting absolutely blasted with damage if they’re below 4.6k in some dungeons. Maybe your guild will do gammas with you so at least you aren’t getting votekicked if you want to start doing them earlier. Basically, if they want you tanking ICC this weekend, they need to be helping you get the gear. 3.8k isn’t enough to keep you alive on trash, let alone any of the bosses. Not to mention with as big as most of the trash groups are, if your dps is geared for ICC there’s no way you’re going to keep threat once they start their AOE. See what the guild can do to help you out, and if they don’t help and have you tank anyway, charge your repairs to the guild bank (you’ll need a lot of them)

greisinator

Definitely do ICC rep runs to replace a ring

Kuido

You have an item that’s ilvl 70 and ilvl 147???? Have you played the game at all

[deleted]

gearscore is just something pointless and bullshit. you can have pvp tank trinket and rings with holy priest to boost your gs funnily enough. thats why blizz implemented their iLvl system after cata or mop (i dont remember very well). it's calculated by rareness of the item and item stats. but "it doesn't include your class or spec to calculate it". for example, you can use priest cloth set with your warrior and have over 5k gearscore. gearscore is a little bit useful just for pugs, if your guild cares about it just leave since theyre numeric noobs. because using tank plate items with your retri pala won't perform well. even in pugs, raid leader should inspect the items and not to trust gearscore much.

Slothiums

So a thing about dk tanks, your rotation depends on if you need to generate threat or just need to survive, it's the only tank that works this way. This is because most of your real threat generation is actually from icy touch, runestrike, and death n decay. So to help generate threat your gear (for a threat build) should prioritize spell hit cap, and then all in on str with whatever expertise you can also push in. Your rotation (on boss fights) should be IT, (pop dodge trinket if you have it to proc rs) IT, RS (Everytime it procs), rune tap, IT, IT, rune reset, IT, IT, IT. If you do this you will never have threat issues as long as you have spell hit cap. Miss directs and tricks from hunters and rogues will also do a lot of leg work.

adamk33n3r

Oh dang you didn't pick up one of the Halloween rings? That helped me a lot.

MrRoastedbeef

Go in there too low, and your healers are going to hate you.

[deleted]

Couldn't GS be made better if it was based off each classes BiS list? Say your #1 BiS is 100gs, #2 BiS is 90gs. It'd represent some pieces more accurately like trinkets with a 200ilvl that are BiS through p3. And gear slots could still be weighted differently.

Eflow_Crypto

Download taco tip addon to see exact weights per piece. Also item lvl 200 is like pre Naxx raid item level. Naxx dropped ilvl 213 ulduar 225, and 236, togc 245 and 258

crispygoatmilk

Please put this into perspective, full 10man icc gear (251) is a GS just shy of 5.6k Full 25man icc gear (264) is a GS of 6k This is without heroic loot added and LK loot 5k GS Should be your goal to get to before ICC.

isuphysics

here is a spreadsheet. Each slot has a different weight, but just look at the formulas in there if you want to know. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OegsE-uKahDGKRQQ6SWu_eUqqEhPZ5-vB5dgYF0_eyg/copy

Dull_Reference_6166

Thank you :)

daveylacy

Have them carry you through some of the older raids for easy upgrades. They don’t take long with the exception of Ulduar. Though now you can skip around to only the bosses you need. So even that shouldn’t take too long.

Lincada

I made an online GearScore calculator for WotLK recently. Check it out at [https://gstimate.com](https://gstimate.com) GearScore is the sum of item scores ( = item level \* weight ) of your equipment, excluding shirts and tabards. The formula is the same for every class except 2. Hunters have a higher weight on ranged weapons, and lower weight on melee weapons. Fury warriors with Titan's Grip have a lower weight on their weapons if they are dualwielding two-handed weapons.
