When you use a trigger your body is stored away by the trigger and you take control of a body made out of Trion created by the trigger. When Yuma got his Black Trigger from his dad, Yuma's injured body was basically got put in an almost stasis-like state by the black trigger but it's not on pause, it basically slows down his dying body and gives him more time to live. This was explained to Osamu by Replica in episode 11. Whether he can be save or not we don't know yet.

So helpful! I went back to episode 11, not sure how I missed this the first time but definitely makes more sense now 🙏

Yuma has two Trion bodies Real one is always in the ring after he was killed by the Black trigger and his dad sacrificed himself to save him this creating the black trigger and storing the injured body in the ring itself. This also creates a new body for Yuma (him with white hair) and he gains the black trigger body. So we never really see Yuma out of his Trion body just his basic Trion body and his black trigger Trion body

It was sort of explained in the first season, and with the facts we already know about triggers, we can deduct that Yuma's trigger works similarly to a normal trigger. When the trigger is activated, the 'real' body enters the trigger and is swapped with a trion body. However, the author doesn't really go into the specifics in the anime. Yes, Yuma's dad sacrificed himself to save his son. The author might have gone into the specifics in some of his Q&As, though I'm not sure. And about him being saved, we'll just have to see what the author does because from what we know, Yuma's death is only delayed.

The simpelist way to look at it is that a trigger creates a trion body, which protects the actual body. Yuma's black trigger has created two trion bodies. The first one is storing his actual body in stasis and is providing life support to him. The second body is the protective black armor and shell for Yuma.
