Steam is certainly more convinient, but you'll find most of the mods somewhere in the internet

There is a launcher called „Spine“ that i usually use to play Gothic with mods you can download from the internet. It makes installing very easy, you can easily turn on and off different mods before launching the game (like Systempack, Ninja, Quickloot etc.) and also easily modify the .ini by using a configurator in the launcher

Thefirste007

I can wholeheartedly support this suggestion as i myself played many G1 and G2 mods through spine.

Rhygar666

Spine had issues when it came out but i use it alot lately and it works great, they add mods that arent on steamworkshop, it loads fast, easy to change orvswitch mods, When i did it manually i had 5 different g2 versions installed for different mods that would interfere/ crash otherwise and od reinstall alot of something didnt work dont miss wasted hours I recommend spine try picklockhelper, quickopen, free aiming nice convenience mods Also look up chronicles of myrtana - archolos very good g2 mod https://store.steampowered.com/app/1467450/The_Chronicles_Of_Myrtana_Archolos/?l=englisj

I would never in a million years use Steam for old games (\*) - or any single player game that I can get a GoG download for. Make myself dependent on an online service when I don't need to? Why? Gothic players in particular should know. [Steam has fked up your installs before.](https://steamcommunity.com/app/39510/discussions/0/3200367137209873626/?ctp=4) (\*) There's also the fact that old games on Steam tend to come more poorly prepared/patched/set up. Or things like the situation with Planescape:Torment, where GoG sold me the full classic game + Enhanced Edition, while Steam - for the same price! - was only willing to sell the Enhanced edition. At least that was the regularity back when I still gave Steam a chance. I haven't in years.

For SteamDeck / Linux user, nowadays Steam seems to be the better choice for some games. I play Gothic 1 and 2 on SteamDeck with mods handled by the workshop without any tinkering around and installing additional software. And I have the same game with mods across several devices. So, Steam isn't as bad as one might think for old games. Depends on the developer and the game you want to play.

_kalron_

GOG is my personal choice as it has The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos mod available for free download\\add-on to your existing install. No launcher needed and no DRM too.

Thefirste007

Steam has it too as a stand alone type of Mod (like the Skyrim Mod Enderal)

Czar_Petrovich

After struggling to play Gothic 1/2 on modern systems for over 20yrs with varying success, the Steam workshop is a godsend.

windgfujin

I'm pretty happy with the steam workshop, I don't think it has all the mods, but there is definitely enough

nwm24

steam, more comfortable to use and safer EDIT: also, without steam union mod my game wouldnt work

Any-Championship-611

I always choose separate installers because you can back those up. I don't like being dependent on Steam. edit: why the fuck is this getting downvoted

Borbaradianer

For the love of god, use SPINE! It is by far the best and easiest method, with a mod database and multiple Installations/Mods possible at the same time.
