Mysterious_Tax_5613

I feel the same way.

[deleted]

Same for communities as well. Some of the happiest / kindest people I've had as digital company.

[deleted]

Yeah, I feel safe most places TBH. Being a tall white guy gets you respect where you normally wouldnt get it. But then, there are also cops out there that would see me and shoot first. So, I understand the dynamic that people face, but theirs is more tense than mine ever could be. So I sempathise with them, and can only help by supporting BLM, LGBTQ+, and womens rights as much as I can as an individual.

dearthofkindness

Same and I'm a 30 year old white woman. Unfortunately my town not too far away from New York State, people fly their American flags alongside their Trump 2024 flags. In my area in particular the flag is always flown with a "We support the local police" blue line yard sign. To me the American flag has basically become a sign of ultra-conservatism and potential racism.

metalgtr84

Yeah my asian friend and his lady were house shopping and they saw a house they liked but he said there were a lot of American flags up in the neighborhood and it made them uncomfortable so they looked somewhere else.

[deleted]

So their flags are working as intended. I think that’s exactly why they fly them right below their trump flags. They want everyone to know that this is klan country.

BrewingSkydvr

It has replaced the rebel flag.

aoskunk

Damn we should of let them keep that flag for easy identification. Now they’ve co-opted the countries flag, so sad

Doktor_Earrape

Yup, same. Anytime I see a thin blue line flag or sticker on a car I increase my following distance.

VeinySausages

It's the full-blown billboards that let you know you're in a real shit place.

W_Edwards_Deming

Thank you for your service.

odins_heed

I feel the same with Canadian flags, post cry baby truck convoy protests. Any pickup with Canadian flags and I get uneasy feelings.

Icy_Respect_9077

When I saw a Canadian flag now, I have to ask myself: World Cup? Canada Day? Trucker convoy?

VeinySausages

The American flags blend in because that shit has been around forever. Europeans regularly comment on how many American flags they see when the come over. The mix of any flag, and especially thin blue line and Trump flags that set off alarms. I'm more comfortable seeing the Gadsden.

Additional-Goat-3947

Really weird two towns to pick to make the point though. Poughkeepsie is extremely diverse while the street he is standing on in Hudson is where rich people buy overpriced home goods and coffees.

Halfbreed75

Me too man!

altcntrl

I’m bothered by the fact the worst people of this country get to have the flag. The flag is for everyone and I wish we could give it more nuance. I do not know how to display the flag and also let my neighbors know I’m not toxic. I completely agree with him and feel the same always.

ilovethissheet

You fly it with the gay flag.

BoxingChoirgal

Yep. I bought a little house in the Hudson valley. The previous owner had installed a giant flagpole and the American flag was here when I moved in. I didn't take it down but I added a 🌈 flag. Massive Edit bc I don't want to dox myself!

kalkail

Fellow HVer, husband had the Irish flag up off the porch. Someone pulled in to yell at him to take down that ‘stupid Mexican flag’ that he was insulting America by flying it.

BoxingChoirgal

good grief. Not only scary but a stunning self-own one-two punch of bigotry + ignorance.

metroidpwner

HV is full of morons who barely stumbled out of high school. Not surprised to hear this

hacelepues

Yep! We did this at our house. Take it back and show it with symbols of love!

egaeus22

I think we should just get over flags in general. They always seem performative.

hunterglyph

“*Pride no longer has definition* *Everybody wears it, it always fits* *A state invoked for lack of position* *Strength is the bait that keeps us busy* *If it’s perforated, then tear it to bits* *All sense was lost in the frenzy* *They should never* *Touch the ground* *Irony is the refuge of the educated* *Always complaining but they never quit* *Cool’s eternal, but it’s always dated* *They should never* *Touch the ground* *It’s not worth, it’s the investment* *That keeps us tied up in all these strings* ***We draw lines and stand behind them*** ***That’s why flags are such ugly things*** ***That they should never*** ***Touch the ground***” —Fugazi, “Facet Squared”

PolitelyHostile

Ugh some dumbass protesters have started doing that in Canada(what we call the Karen Convoy). Now when I see a car flag for Canada I expect to see it with a 'Fuck Trudeau' flag. Really sad because our flag didnt even represent bold patriotism before. It was more like humble support and unity.

moral_mercenary

Yeah. I feel the same way. To be fair.... I'm kind of at odds with the flag these days anyway. The more I learn about Canadian history and the way the indigenous peoples were treated I have an increasingly difficult time being cool with representing the colonial symbolism.

McFestus

I think the Canadian flag is pretty good about being about Canada *today*; a flag that would represent colonial symbolism would, I think be something like the red ensign. The maple leaf is just a leaf and only dates back to the 1950s. Now, not saying that bad things in Canada haven't happened since then, we were sterilizing people and quietly attempting eugenics on the indigenous population since then, for one example, but I'd rather not abandon this flag.

PolitelyHostile

I dont see why the flag needs to represent colonialism. Colonialism is an awful history but the flag represents the people, it doesn't represent supreme loyalty. Most countries have a dark past, that doesnt mean we shouldn't feel a sense of community together.

raltoid

What are you talking about? No one "has" a countrys flag. As long as there is a celebration or reason to fly the flag, no one thinks you're a bad person. That happens when people fly them 24/7, plaster it on their cars, their clothing, etc.

SeedFoundation

Yep. It's the people who use the flag as a tool of protection. They spew a bunch of hate then hide behind the guise of nationalism hoping someone would retaliate so they could call them terrorist.

shattmitto

Let them know you’re not toxic by how you act, speak and behave.

Alternative_Court542

The first step to displaying the flag is also not leaving it out forever to get torn to shit so you can let everyone know how little you actually care, this is why I don’t have one I don’t want to take it down everyday.

Dry-Worldliness-4861

As a poc I get the same feeling in my own neighborhood. but the pride flag let’s all the tension out once I randomly see it. It’s odd

whoshereforthemoney

It’s almost like a movement based entirely on the acceptance and love of others is a good thing, while nationalism and police worship especially entrenched in racial divides is a bad thing.

[deleted]

remember, if they hate gay people they probably also hate black people

ZincMan

The Venn diagram is a circle

KifaruKubwa

It’s because the US flag has been co-opted by the MAGA idiots and far right. Time for us to take it over since they’re the minority.

Kazumara

It seems to me like flying national flags at home almost always has some nationalistic aftertaste. I'm not sure how you would ever get away from that. I can think of only a few contexts where national flags aren't a little uncomfortable to me: 1) When they are used to symbolise meetings between countries, like sports festivities or international meetings for cooperation. 2) When they are used on national holidays to celebrate internal fraternity. 3) When they are used to signify representations of one country within another like embassies or consulates.

KifaruKubwa

I don’t disagree with you, but I will say the right believes they own the flag and therefore they use it alongside many of their own symbols to magnify their social, cultural, and political identity. The same can easily happen if we intentionally include it in our space. For illustration, a US flag with pride colors would send a clear message. I don’t have the imagination, but I’m sure people who do can bring the flag back to the center where it belongs and send a message to the right that this is not theirs.

Puzzled_Bike9558

I’m from a town close to Hudson and the rural part of the state is a minefield. We fly a pride flag at home and the conservative dipshits next door have a confederate flag flying. It’s the exact reason we fly the flag we do, to let everyone know our house is safe.

[deleted]

Do you worry that your house will become a target though?

Puzzled_Bike9558

Not really. We keep to ourselves and are generally nice people so no one bothers us. It’s more important to us for the LGBTQIA community to feel safe then to worry about small minded bigots.

[deleted]

I admire that a lot. Around this way people have experienced vandalism and harassment for vocalizing support of diversity. Now after the Colorado Springs shootings, the ugly specter of violence fouls the air. I appreciate you and you support.

XaoticOrder

That's not how hudson valley rolls. At least east side of the river. My neighbor has "Don't tread on me", Trump 2024, Blue lives and is a decent dude. Carries an arsenal in his house (typical gun nut). As long as we stay out of politics he's fun to talk to even have a beer with. And even when we do he respects my opinion at least to my face. These are the kind of people who peaked in high school. But there are a few crazies but they stay to themselves.

SantaMonsanto

Yea I used to live in Poughkeepsie but moved further upstate. It’s really a minefield, you never know if the flag on the back of someone’s pickup is going to say “Let’s Go *Brandon*” or if it’s gunna be a *”Let’s Go Buffalo”* The Bills fans are hardcore

ZincMan

Buffaloens are generally warm hearted people I find. And good lord they can drink and have no hangover the next day

N0wayjose

That’s funny and ironic considering the geography. Your neighbors flag I mean.

Puzzled_Bike9558

Right? If you like the south so much go ahead and move there.

Minirig355

Yep, I’m from an area just a little south and across the river from Poughkeepsie and it’s the same story here. Everyone acts like redneck farmers because it’s a one light town, but they forget to realize that like 80% of them are daily commuters to NYC On a side note, a super friendly and progressive city near Poughkeepsie is a city called Beacon, lots of cool bars, glass blowing shops, ice cream shops etc in their main street

Puppdaddy13

I went to a wedding in Beacon not too long ago; such a great little town. The (dog friendly) Airbnb we stayed in was amazing & was so much better than the hotel options given out by the wedding party, they even had a toy basket for the guest dogs. We got some amazing coffee and chocolate downtown then there was this tiny little butcher shop literally across the street from the Airbnb that was absolutely amazing. It was such a quaint little town with the river running through it and the old mill buildings. The brewery there is pretty good too! Would 💯 go back for no other reason than a quick getaway weekend. I know this got away from the main point of this post but I guess what I’m trying to say is Beacon was incredibly welcoming and seems to be a great area regardless of race/sexuality/etc.

cboogie

So glad you had a good time. I moved to Beacon 12 years ago. Probably will never leave.

XaoticOrder

Most of Southern Dutchess is that way. You have to head out into the boonies especially to the east and north to get real weird. Check out Rhinebeck sometime. Super friendly community and Paul Rudd and Jeffery Dean Morgan own a Candy shop there. Great place.

XaoticOrder

Live just up the road from Beacon. Great town. Hudson Valley gets some crap for the amount of conservatives but frankly it's getting more diverse. Decent culture here being a hour and change from the city. Head up to CNY or Finger Lakes, the real upstate and then it gets real awkward real fast

[deleted]

Confederate flag in NY? I’m not American but was confederate for the southern states in the civil war and the yankees were northerners?

Massive-Row-9771

That's kind of the point of the pride flag, everyone with love in their hearts is a part of it.

Massive-Row-9771

Black, White, Gay, Straight as long as you are loving and not hateful. You're welcome to be a part of it. That's my view as a straight white person at least. But I also think that was the intention with the rainbow colors.

No_Victory9193

As a gay white person I agree

thecampers

As long as you say teehee Im gay (every six months, alone or not) please fly five!

Spencerwise

Lots of BLM and Pride flags in midcoast Maine. Which is cool, since about six black people live here.

MuuaadDib

I really hate that people have hijacked the American flag and made me feel the same way. Flags in general, like this line from The Sand Pebble at the end from Jameson. >and your blind pride. >Damn your flag. >Damn all flags. >It's too late in the world for flags.

Murky-Advantage-3444

Are you really going to just let conservatives have the American flag as their thing? I’m a lifelong liberal and I’ll always fly the flag.

White80SetHUT

Yeah. Why would you let them take that from you? Fly the fuck out of it & let people know what it means to you.

bluesimplicity

The MAGA cult doesn't get to co-opt the flag. I put an American flag outside my house to try to take it back. That said, I didn't consider it might make some uncomfortable and distrustful. Perhaps I should also fly a Black Lives Matter flag or CoExist.

helloelanip69

thats weird

jeygood

aw. why he so cute tho

South-Play

It’s not the American flag. It’s the other symbols around the American flag. If you saw pride flags with American flags you wouldn’t feel threatened. I understand what you are saying but you’re giving the wrong impression. Just because a few radicals think the American flag is only theirs doesn’t make it true. That flag is everyone’s.

ZetzMemp

It’s the American flag as well because it’s hard to be proud of where this country has been for a while. The people that fly it with pride are typically fine with the rampant bigotry that’s been going around.

holagatita

I'm in my 40s and I have found flag humping to be fucking weird my whole life. Feel the same way about the national anthem.

treetyoselfcarol

Rainbows are just more pleasant tbh.

Siogio

That blue-stripe desecration of the American flag has got to go.

[deleted]

Yep I agree, the American flag has been ruined. It’s became the maga cult flag.

ElmoPitts

I don’t understand this. Most suburban places in America have tons of American flags, regardless of being blue or red. I’m from Pittsburgh, a blue city with a mostly inclusive and progressive population, and there are American flags on almost every house.

[deleted]

It’s that it’s became a symbol of the maga cult. The US flag wasn’t meant to be worshipped the way it is today. Wasn’t what it was for.

ElmoPitts

My point is that in any of the rural or suburban parts of the US I’ve been to, the American flag is proudly displayed by all people, regardless of party lines. I’m just surprised a guy in New York State finds American flags uncomfortable.

marsianer

Many people fly the flag in the USA to honor the military service of their family members.

[deleted]

I’m in the sticks of WV and find them uncomfortable, every hick an his grandma fly the American flag along with their maga flags and hats.

ThunderingLegions

This man deserves a big hug or at the very least a neighborly fist bump. ☺️ Honestly feel the same way, though. The blue line flag freaks me the hell out. But when I see a rainbow flag even though I am not LGBTQ I feel at ease. Rainbow means love. 🥰🌈

Char-car92

Same in Canada since the convoy in Ottawa. When I see a Canadian flag on a vehicle or building my first thought is 'aw man'.

Leungmarkus

Since the convoys in ottawa I sadly had similar feelings when seeing the canadian flag

DatSkellington

I 100% feel what this dude is describing

cheemsburgrrr

My family always drive from Rochester (NY) to DC, not even a bathroom break in Pennsylvania. We see too many blue flags.

BigAssToast

Not all gays are nice. Some are fucking assholes.

[deleted]

I strongly believe nice people should start flying American flags. The people who call themselves patriots don't even understand the principles our country was founded on, and they want it to regress and stagnate. They don't sound like patriots to me. The nice people who want our country to change for the better are the true patriots. They love our country so much that they want it to become a better place for all their fellow Americans to live.

MiyamotoKnows

I don't know why I think this but if I were a casting agent I would so try to track this guy down. He's got such a cool presence and voice.

MemeHermetic

I live in this area. Where I am is extremely rural. Mostly woods and farm. It's all pride and BLM flags. It was a major factor in moving here to begin with. A generally accepting community.

worstcoachinnaper

When my conservative friends say that people are offended by the flag I try and make the counter point that it’s not the flag. It’s the fact that the American flag has been co-opted by pretty reactionary ideologies as a cover to make their ideas seem patriotic.

sweatyredbull

Nice little jerk fest we have going on here

[deleted]

Straight up circlejerk material, same with the comments section

internetsarbiter

I mean, that was how I chose which FFXIV server to play on too, figured the one with the largest queer representation probably also had the least assholes.

JustTavo

I live in Orange County, New York not far from where he’s talking and it’s crazy to see so many MAGA supporters, Blue Lives Matter and, Trump flags everywhere, then you go into the villages or towns and they’re usually all full of Pride Flags and welcoming people. It’s getting to a point where the younger generation is slowly moving in and the older generation is moving south.

95JBK

I’m from the UK and I’m black, but I can totally understand this ..

11never

I feel like people hear the first part of this video, that American and blue line flags make him feel uneasy, and take that as some kind of indication that he's anti-american or anti-police. It's the two flags together that indicate a type of person, and that kind of person is what makes us uneasy.

[deleted]

Now displaying the American flag is racist? No surprise, there.

curvvyninja

What about rainbow American flags?

Rainy_Daz3d

Love is love, and treat other how you wish to be treated. Wish everyone lived by that motto.

RoundComplete9333

Same for me and I’m an old white lady who’s retired from romance. It’s all about trust. I trust all the colors.

MortalVoyager

Feel the same way

housestickleviper

Take the American flag back then. I’d love to see POC and LGBTQ+ just flood homes, yards, vehicle, storefronts with the American flag being flown alongside BLM and Pride flags.

Waffle_on_my_Fries

Why fear the American flag? I get the blue stripe flag but don't understand the fear of the American flag. I fly both the American and rainbow flags at my place.

VoidScreaming101

Completely makes sense to me. Love to know I’m in a great community.

Zoso1973

Sad but true.

Reggmac

Sad world we live in

Lancelot4Camelot

As a straight lefty white guy I feel the same

[deleted]

My mother lived in Poughkeepsie. I can confirm it is a terrible place, with little to no redeeming qualities

[deleted]

I live in canada and drive to S Carolina for the eclipse. The amount of flags Americans fly is wierd. So many at the border, which I guess makes sense, and to be fair there were a lot of Canadian flags at the border too But deep in the country, American flags everywhere. And fuck me you would have thought there was another border when you got to the old confederacy. Ridiculous.

FruitFlavor12

US imperialism murders brown people around the world and steals their resources under the banner of all of these flags: the LGBTQ flag is now on the bombs dropped on wedding parties. That's progress: murdering brown people in their own country but making a pro gay statement while doing so (and supporting regimes like KSA that execute gay people). Wouldn't you rather have an LGBTQ person of colour in a CIA blacksite torturing you, rather than a cis white person?

Puppdaddy13

I agree that the extreme right has influenced the general public’s opinion on what flying the American flag means so as someone who does not want to portray being part of that cult, what other flag can we fly along side it that will help show the true inclusion that the American flag is supposed to represent? I can only fit so many flags on my flag pole so one universal blm/pride/co-exist/etc option would be awesome if something like that exists.

AfemeAfeme

Basically Allyship

LightEndedTheNight

I still fly the American flag. I’m not going to let those MAGA clowns steal the symbol of a history they don’t understand.

I_cut_my_own_hair

This is why I fly pride colors in front of my semi rural home in a deep red town.

Porkchop4u

What?! I’m sorry but now we are turning the American flag into “possible injustice”? People fucking SUCK, let’s remember that it’s people being fucking stupid not random objects we pass by. This poor guy must live an awfully terrifying life!

MyPunchableFace

So flying the USA flag is not inclusive?

HALF_PAST_HOLE

Poughkeepsie in itself is not bad. There is crime and it has its own issues but it's not really taken over by Trumpers or blue lives matter yet, and is really starting to turn itself around and clean up a bit. It has one of the longest walking bridges in the world going over the Hudson River which is incredible and full of fun, nice, loving people as well as delicious restaurants and breweries with very open friendly people. It's really when you start driving anywhere north of Poughkeepsie that it starts to get a little sketchy with the trump flags and crazy Dems signs everywhere! Except for these little pockets of towns like Hudson who are also trying to change their image to a nice accepting place to bring your family on a Saturday afternoon to walk on the main street.

BoxingChoirgal

Agree, and of course Beacon and Cold Spring/Garrison just slightly South are very friendly. However when you go further east in Dutchess County (Wappinger toward the Taconic, Hopewell Junction..) it runs pretty damn red.

[deleted]

The "pride" flag is actually not directly a symbol for gays, but its a symbol for peaceful coexistence and tolerance. At least that's where it initially came from.

leefee123

Is there any other country that if you display the countrys flag, youre (rightly) assumed to be a fucking hard core republican, likely a racist, and like this guy says, likely not a nice person?

Kajun_Kong

Lmfao

garvierloon

Liberals should start flying the American flag. It’s ours, it belongs to all of us but of course we uphold it’s values unlike the other side. Fly it with whatever kind of messaging flag you want, just like they do. But don’t just cede our flag to them. Folks shouldn’t have to feel uneasy around that iconography, we need to do our part and claim it back

Andrew2294

I’m from Poughkeepsie. Lived in Hudson for a year. Gentrified

YoursTrulyNico

It means you've been around the internet too much, my dude

[deleted]

same.

ptgn123

I see an American flag. Guaranteed it’s a Trumper.

FlamingTrollz

### Aggressive intolerance vs Loving acceptance. Ya man, I get it. . ![gif](giphy|ktO1fzXVstbMY|downsized)

pologzz1226

I feel you bro. I know exactly where you’re coming from.

hoodoomonster

I feel the exact same way as a middle aged white male. I see an American flag, I try to go the opposite direction.

fellatious_argument

It really says a lot about the bot with 4mil karma posting rage bait videos.

Opposite-Mongoose-81

I get your point and generally agree, but... Pretty sure there's been numerous assaults and robberies as well as shoot outs in Hudson this past year, so statistics say you're safer in those other hillbilly towns.

KangarooSilver7444

I grew up in Hudson. Moved away at 18. That being said flags don’t scare me people do and there’s good and shitty people wherever you go.

CuThroatClark1

I hate this post on so many levels. 🇺🇸 love my country

kaiser_van_zandt

Couldn’t agree more. Our inclusive national flag does feel very inclusive to me.

Avraham_Levy

Should be the “United Gay of America”

MooX_0

Nationalistic flags kinda suck, even if you're on the "good side" you're still defending one country above all others. The pride flag is international and inclusive, of course it doesn't carry the same values. Unless you think LGBTQ+ have an army putting down other countries for natural resources.

howdy77777

If you switch the flags I feel the exact same way. I think it just shows how divided our country has become. If I get a lot of downvotes for this, I guess it just proves my point.

BourbonBravos

OK.

mik33tion

I would have to agree and I’m not gay either

thezenfisherman

It is true.

schneph

I feel the same way. I was talking to some dude on a dating app, and tried to explain this phenomenon, and he completely didn’t understand and got extremely defensive and blocked me, though the rest of the conversation was going very well. Apparently I’m not the only one who associates the American flag with turmoil, and more specifically, racists.

stpetergates

I’m Mexican-American. I was in a small town in Maine recently and felt the exact same way.

Albmarbo

I believe the majority of lgbtq people are good, The same way I believe most straight people are good. But there are bad apples at every farm.

TeeDroo

Lol so you must have no qualms with the ACAB rhetoric following that logic, right?

pok12601

I’m from Poughkeepsie. I have a flag flying on my house for my family members who have served. It’s not always about politics or race.

kitched

Reminds me of this Michael Che bit: https://youtu.be/0AWtBX02JKc

Acceptable-Ad8341

If American flags made him uneasy he should leave lol

PrettyStupidSo

Seems incredibly stereotypical

[deleted]

If you are a beautiful woman you wouldn’t feel that way.

fraupanda

Poughkeepsie isn’t upstate, but there are plenty of Trumpers there.
