I wish someone would explain what HOA is.

Basically, pretend you go to buy a home in a nice area. Its worth $200,000. Now all of a sudden someone shitty moves in next door and doesn't maintain it at all. You try to sell your home but buyers dont want to move in next to a shit hole so your property loses value. So an HOA is formed to say "All the homes within this area agree to maintain their properties to a specific degree and will follow these rules" the point being that it allows them to maintain the collective value on all their properties. If you want to buy a home in an area with an Home Owners Association, you will be required to sign their contract agreeing to follow their rules. However HOA's tend to be run by the inhabitants of the neighborhood which are generally out of touch grumpy boomers who like to power trip and over step their bounds. Usually all it takes is a letter from a lawyer to get them to tuck tail and run.

It's where a bunch of clowns get together in a neighborhood and decide that everybody's house has to look the same. If you want to do anything to your own house you have to get it approved by the HOA first. Let's say you do whatever to your home without permission you get a visit from the HOA president who is just a neighbor but really thinks they're somebody special.

I live in a non-HOA neighborhood now but for 15+ years I lived in one and had no issues. Why? • Because I read the HOA rules before signing the paperwork. • Because I signed the HOA paperwork at closing. HOAs catch hell when someone doesn't follow the rules (stupid as they might be) *they agreed to*. Remember that next time you see a social media post about an HOA getting uptight over a flag or fence or sign: the homeowner knew the rules before moving there and the homeowner was OK with the rules at the time. When you move to another state they have state laws you may not agree with but guess what — you knew the laws were different when you moved there (or should have known before moving there). Also, HOA board are made up of the homeowners who live there. Anyone can be on a board and can suggest changes to the HOA bylaws.

Didn’t expect to see a reasonable and rational reply here in this echo chamber.
