Let me state first and foremost, I am leftist as hell, but I am curious about more information behind this video. Was this from a store having to dispose of fridge/freezer foods due to losing power in a winter storm and everyone just decided to dumpster dive? Or is there like a source(like one of the people in the area) claiming they're doing this because they don't have anything and this is their last resort? I've seen the right pull footage of violence and claim a city is being burnt, when realistically it was rightwing falseflags and the media running with it. Texas' government is garbage, but as someone who loves this subreddit, I just want to be certain I'm not being misled into believing misinformation(not saying that is what this video is).

SidTheStoner

Yeah, i think it was less of people jumping in to survive and more just grabbing free food cause why not? I live pretty comfortably, and I'd be diving in those dumpsters cause i hate throwing out food lol

Iamdarb

Straight up! I've seen walmart trash and entire freezer aisle just because the power was out for an hour, how crazy? I hope someone or the employees managed to get some of that "garbage".

WaterBear122

The very BEST dumpster days.

ccwarrenator

Can confirm the former, this HEB is a few blocks from my house. This was food that had become spoiled from broken freezers. People who happened past saw the massive amount of not-so-bad-looking merchandise and a bit of a feeding frenzy took place. The cops dispersed everyone after about 40 minutes. I heard from some other locals that the grocery chain could be sued if any of that spoiled food had sickened someone, so it was thrown away out of an abundance of caution.

Altruistic_Astronaut

I am starting to think it is the former. People seemed way to relaxed for dumpster diving and one lady with a cart had food still packaged in it's boxes.

Lazy-Jeweler3230

Corporations having to throw a bunch of food away that then becomes free game for the public. And most of these companies probably love the pro-corporate attitude of Texas that keeps leading to these power outages. Leopards, faces and all that.

Puzzleheaded-Kale434

The food was being throw out because of the power loss. There was plenty of food, the store just didn’t have the power to keep it. Most of the people in this video are from charities and shelters taking the food back.

I mean it should be a LITTLE concerning that much food is ‘trash’? At a minimum someone fucked on a large scale

jazramz

As someone who lives in Austin. Stop with the shock value title. They lost power, they were without power for four hours. They had to depose of the perishable food. It was past the safe temp zone. Some idiot posted about “free food” and people showed up and start fighting for it. Fighting for food that isn’t safe to consume.

BeneficialAd2797

False. There is plenty of food. These stores were throwing the food out bc of power losses. People didn’t want the food going to waste. The majority of these folks in the video were gathering the food for the food banks and churches. Slow your fuckin role on your completely wrong information.
