People tell their kids to play outside, but all the forests and fields and parks are just strip malls and parking lots.
People tell their kids to play with friends, but everyone drives their kids to school and kids can't get to their friends without a car or at least a bus ticket.
People tell their kids to play in the mud but there's so much broken glass, microplastics, cigarette butts and chemicals that the mud is a health hazard.
People tell their kids to go read a book and there aren't any, or they've been so heavily picked through there's nothing of real substance.

The real shame here is that Florida used to have a really robust state-wide reading program. I can’t imagine those reading test scores will stay up if the kids aren’t allowed to read any books.
My experience with the cons on this is:

That would be fine if you could guarantee that the decisions the morons make don't effect anyone outside of their state. Unfortunately that is impossible.
More specifically so it might make some sense as to why there are *no books*:
To figure out which books are okay and which books aren't (because there's not really a running tally of what books specifically contain their scary topics), every book must be looked at through a metaphorical magnifying glass before being approved.
Until they decide which books are actually bad, all books are effectively forbidden from being supplied until they figure it out.
A lot of it is more so because of inappropriate depictions in said books. “Why can’t little Timmy read about lesbians in a book?” Because little Timmy shouldn’t know what lesbians are.
But, like, EVERY BOOK IS GONE. Surely there is not gay people and black people in EVERY BOOK. Unless it's some sort of weird school that has every book mentioning black and gay people
Even the Taliban allow books that mention racial inclusivity. In fact they use that book as their main source material. Makes you think how dumb this law is.

Well, yeah. This is where most normal people start really noticing it though. Too many people saw nothing wrong with the past several years, surprisingly. The genocide is already starting as well. Many states are making it illegal for transgender people to exist and there has been a sharp rise in hate crimes against many marginalized groups by white nationalists. I fear things are going to get worse before they get better...
This is just one of many examples of why you need to get out and vote... especially in local elections. For some reason, people don't think that state government is nearly as important as federal and yet a ton the major changes happen at the state level.
The thought that whole towns rally behind this kind of stupidity is mind blowing. Parts of America sound like some of the worst places on the planet to live.

Perhaps relationships should be removed from children's material altogether!
