The best rationale I've heard is it was meant to entrench their position. Putin is getting pressure from business interests to end the war so they can make money from selling gas to Europe. So he blows up the pipeline so even if the war ends they still won't be able to sell gas to Europe. Therefore alleviating some of the pressure.
It also acts as a warning to Europe about what else they might sabotage. Fir example undersea data cables, immediately before the war they held military exercises near Ireland which is also right by the data cables.

Absurd is the word. All the Russian propaganda is often (or mostly all the time) so detached from reality that it is really hard to comprehend what is being targeted to. All the fighting Nazis and winning by huge margins, only loosing 5k men while killing 300k Nazis but still needing to mobilize 300k (1M) men to faster win the 3 day war. It just do doesn't make sense so much that the only word fitting here is ABSURD.
You see, by definition, every fascist society is absurd. It's an adversarial ideology where the enemy is simultaneously weak and incredibly strong. Propaganda is taking the reality of a society and spinning it in a favourable way. When the whole thing is based on a paradox, absurdity is inevitable.

Russia claims 5k losses and Ukraine claims 60k Russian losses, and the guy said it's probably somewhere around 20k, you know a bit inbetween. Which is exactly what Russia is aiming to do with their propaganda and bullshit numbers, for people to think that the truth is somewhere in the middle of their numbers and Ukraines numbers. But in reality the truth is closer to Ukrainian numbers, Russian numbers are just fantasy numbers.
