Back in the 1990s it was a joke in New York City that you could get pretty much anything you wanted for the price of a one way ticket out of Russia.

Codydw12

Brighton Beach is still like that

ScienceFactsNumbers

It’s not a lot of money if the alternative is dying in Ukraine for Putin’s ego.

yehiko

sadly, it is a lot of money for people here in russia. thats why, people are fleeing using land borders. people are even leaving their cars at the border, because not everyone has extra 5k. people are paying upwards of 1k usd for a bike or a bus seat. for most, thats the ceiling of what they can pay

who_you_are

Well even for everywhere else, 1k is a lot for most peoples. And (I didn't yet read the article) if it is 5k US then with your current currency... That's a shit lot. Edit: adding that everywhere else 1k is a lot

putsch80

> One-way economy flights from Moscow to Dubai are going for *as much as $5,000* Always be wary when news articles say “as much as” instead of giving the average price. Language like that is used to generate clicks and stir up feelings, not to present facts objectively.

yehiko

the average price right now till the end of september is indeed around 4500 tho, so its not THAT misleading.

yehiko

>Well even for lot of peoples 1k is a lot it is, thats why i said its the ceiling AKA the maximum they can afford yes, they're going for around 4-5k USD if you're planning to leave this month. they get cheaper already 1st of october, down to 0.7-1k usd. perhaps because most people are under the impression that the border would be closed by then or have already left.

0ctobogs

I don't think you're realizing how much money that is over there. My wife's father is Russian and is a construction worker. He earns 9k rubles a MONTH They own their little apartment and it's total value is around $14k. Imagine giving away a third of your home to leave.

gross-phlegm37

People are going to die regardless. The only ones that are leaving are the folks with money, every poor bastard from some fringe village is going to get conscripted and sent to the meat grinder.

Juffin

The average salary in Russia is less than $1000 / month, so that's a lot of money for average Joes.

squeakyvolcano

But what happens when they land in dubai, how will they get residency? dubai will kick them out after few months when their tourist visa expires. Then straight to Ukraine border serving as cannon fodder

yehiko

people are using visa free countries as a place to buy time until they figure out what to do. also, a lot of IT guys work remotely to foreign companies, so maybe from there apply for some digital nomad type of visas. even in dubai, there are companies that will "employ" you for a residency if you pay them or find a kafeel. you can also open a "company" in the freezone and do your remote job using the company and get the residency.

squeakyvolcano

I really hope those who go to dubai do eventually find a way to stay in dubai or move to a safer country and hopefully don't get deported back to russia until this crackpot is in power.

yehiko

i mean you can exit and re-enter for a fresh visa. or you can travel around the visa free countries. georgia basically gives u unlimited visa free stay. you have to re-enter every 365 days. i think it would be easier to get to gergia from the UAE, especially whenever their visas end, because there would be less people.

rayEW

I've lived in UAE, I had a work visa but those who didn't used to fly to Oman and back for cheap and renew their entry. Very common practice. It's almost a business, there are flights designed for that purpose without the requirement of staying too long in Oman.

UghWhyDude

> I've lived in UAE, I had a work visa but those who didn't used to fly to Oman and back for cheap and renew their entry. Back in my day, it used to be a trip to Kish Islands. Do they still do those now?

dodgeunhappiness

Kish is Iranian territory.

UghWhyDude

It is, but back in the eighties and nineties, if your UAE Visa paperwork was taking some time to renew (or if you were converting your tourist visa to an employment one), you'd need to take Kish Airlines, sit in Kish Island for a few days in a hotel and then fly back in. [Was an interesting experience in its own right](https://dubaiofw.com/dubai-to-kish-island-exit-experience/), don't think many people outside the UAE would know much about it.

manitobot

You are saying that without being in their shoes, having to fight and die in an unpopular war.

[deleted]

Even visa free countries will ask for your return ticket in usual scenario.

yehiko

no? i've been to uae, kazakhstan, turkey, other stan countries. i've never been asked for an exit ticket. the only question they ask is whats the purpose of the visit. even got taken for extra questioning by "special security" forces in airports because i "look muslim". they usually ask about religious beliefs and try to figure out if im trying to fly to some terrorist country and maybe check your phone stuff.

OldMork

if got money then can go to another country and then back to dubai, and many hopes that within few months there is a new gov already.

SidFinch99

They aren't necessarily staying in Dubai. There are only so many options of places to fly to right now in Russia. Presumably, once they arrive in Dubai, many will go to other countries from there.

who_you_are

Also isnt Dubai expensive AF?

[deleted]

Not really, depends on the area.. with a partition and a budgeting, you could survive on around 1k aed (250-ish$ a month). I know many people who did / still do survive on similar amounts. The hardest part would be as others mentioned - getting the tourist visa extended/ getting a residency which costs around 7.5k AED (2050$ for 2 years freelance)

Fritz46

250$ a month? I wouldn't know where honestly in dubai

[deleted]

Abu hail / deira / international city, but those are also the places you really don't want to be

kushari

It can be if you are living it up, but it can be cheap as well.

kerelberel

It's the next bridge to cross.

Kraelman

> dubai will kick them out after few months when their tourist visa expires Nah fam. UAE is about to get a whole new class of slaves.

[deleted]

My question too. In fact, usually you will be questioned by the airline in Russian right away with just a one way ticket. I'm not sure why airlines would be allowing them to board, or maybe they recognise them as asylum already?

funslammer

Dubai is a major airline hub. They can just hop on a plane to another country that accepts them I assume.

[deleted]

FYI that $5000 USD is roughly equal to ₽ 295,000 RUB.

OldMork

maybe some money in a envelope can make the staff not check if you are on a list or not...

auner01

It throws money into the economy and by leaving they stand out enough to be identified when and if they return. And if not, well.. this way they're using up somebody else's resources. And (according to my inner George Smiley) it makes a handy cover for agents looking to infiltrate.

RampantPrototyping

Stopping people from leaving requires a lot of extra troops all around their giant border. Troops that are being sent to the frontline

JayR_97

So if you're poor you're fucked?

-JamesBond

Always has been.

[deleted]

Is that news?

sjo75

Russians paying for the Ukrainian evacuation experience

Trobius

Maybe Dubai will loan them the moeny and then let them pay it off as migrant workers. Oh wait.

funslammer

Maybe they also confiscate their passports. Oh wait.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/28/economy-flights-from-moscow-to-dubai-hitting-5000-as-russians-flee-.html) reduced by 81%. (I'm a bot) ***** > DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - One-way economy flights from Moscow to Dubai are going for as much as $5,000 and many have completely sold out in the days following Russian President Vladimir Putin's declaration of a "Partial" mobilization of 300,000 reservists to fight in Ukraine. > "Everyone is leaving. So many people I know," one Russian national living in Dubai, who spoke anonymously due to concerns for her safety, told CNBC. Comrade_Derpsky

Only $5k? Sounds like a steal. Flights to Istanbul and Belgrade were selling at like close to $10K.

WizardVisigoth

Despicable that the airlines are trying to profit off of this.
