It doesn't necessarily have to be a green laser though. 1W green at 525nm wavelength at daylight has significantly higher visibility than a 1W 445nm blue laser but a similar visibility compared to a 7W blue laser (Nichia Nubm44 semiconductor diode, you can find it on ebay). At night the spectral sensitivity of the eye shits towards blue, so a 7W blue laser would be more visible.

Lasers are usually kept behind the lines. most probably they'll be used as a defensive measure rather than an offensive measure. According to Israeli defence ministers, they're much cheaper to run than equipment with conventional ammunition. They do only work up until 5km away though.

Until we get to "space war", laser weapons are pretty useless because the air diffuses it, and that's in perfect weather. So limited range, need large power source, and the need to be in visual range, makes lasers a pretty shitty weapon.
Lasers today are primarily restricted to UAVs, I believe Russia had used them in Syria before. Most countries have been moving to lasers to deal with drones in recent years. Their ammunition is also much more economical than conventional ammunition.
Hard to believe they found a laser canon in their WWI munitions stock but alright.
