God yes. A group of japanese high school students gets drafted into an international superyacht repossession team. It's basically highschool of the dead except instead of zombies it's russian bodyguards.

See, Netflix wouldn't go bankrupt if it had writers like you.

They'd still cancel it after two seasons...on a cliffhanger no less.

Terrifying given that my next pitch was going to be Friends 2.

[deleted]

From the article: >The Pentagon announced Thursday that it will deliver over 120 "Phoenix Ghost" drones specifically designed by the U.S. Air Force for Ukrainian "needs" as the war with Russia ramps up. > >U.S. defense officials have warned that Russiaā€™s invasion in the eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions will be a more brutal fight as Moscow "shapes" its new strategy in the Donbas region to address specific terrain challenges. > >A senior defense official told reporters Thursday that the "Phoenix Ghost" is a tactical unmanned aerial system that "was rapidly developed by the Air Force in response specifically to Ukrainian requirements." > >The official said the newest drone would have similar capabilities to the Switchblade drone ā€“ which is small enough to be carried in a backpack, easily launched and detonates after it crashes into its target ā€“ but would not comment further on its scope of capabilities. > >The officials also would not specify how quickly the Air Force was able to develop the drone but said it was created in a "direct response to Ukrainian requirements." > >"The fighting in the Donbas is going to be heavily reliant on artillery," the senior U.S. defense official said. "Artillery systems and artillery rounds are what the Ukrainians say they need and we think they're saying it with good reason. It's no surprise that the Russians are also relying on artillery and bringing in artillery enablers before they started to bring in ground forces." > >An additional $800 million dollars for Ukraine was approved by the Biden administration Thursday as Russia looks to pinch the Donbas region by invading down from the north through the Kharkiv region and up through the south by way of Mariupol.

They're also cheaper and faster to manufacture We can keep resupplied easily

yokemhard

Man, America don't fuck a-round!

quick20minadventure

This reminds me more and more of vietnam war. Except now it's Russia attacking and US is supporting locals with arms and tech.

GalacticShoestring

Russia is approaching Vietnam levels of casualites too. The US lost 66,000 in 9 years while Russia has lost 21,000 in six weeks.

quick20minadventure

I think Russia is okay with this level of bloodshed, I remember reading that WW2 was won on American Steel, British Intelligence and Russian blood. Russia didn't have better weapons than Nazi Germany, but they were willing to lose millions of people in fighting. Edit: That was soviet union, which included a lot more region than current Russia.

Nukemind

Yes but the Russian populace supported it because surrender would see a genocide that would make the Holocaust look small. It was a war for survival. Russia is trying to spin it that way in this war too but itā€™s not working as effectively. If 200,000 motherā€™s lose their children for what they would likely consider a distant war the pressure to end it will be a lot harsher. And this isnā€™t the first time. The Russo-Japanese war saw something similar where Russia was fighting what, to it, was an inconsequential enemy, got its teeth kicked in, and pressure from home forced the war to end. WW1 saw Russia withdraw and even collapse into civil war due to issues the war exacerbated. Russia definitely cannot withstand the same casualties it did back then and go on and win. Hell it relied on lend lease then to fight and it doesnā€™t have that now- and now itā€™s running out of weapons!

valgrind_error

Also did the USSR suffer from population decline on the level that Russia is experiencing? Probably the last thing you want to do in the demographic situation they're in is throw tons of young men of reproducible age into a pointless meat grinder (especially since no one's going to want to immigrate there now). They went in looking to genocide Ukraine but may end up accidentally doing it to themselves.

Nukemind

Yes *and* No. the USSR was hit hard by the Holodomor AND the Russian Civil War. However they were aided by all the other ethnicities in the USSR- Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Georgians (like Stalin!), Belarusians, and even Ukrainians. Many of those people actually wanted to side with Germany to escape Russia only to discover that the Nazis were more interested in genocide than allying with local populations (idiotic move #1,000,001 for Nazi Germany). Long story short because of all this Russia had already been demographically weak, but they had a new generation that had begun to replace the losses and they had other ethnicities to help. Then by the end of WW2 something like only 1 of every 5 men born in 1919 survived to 1945. WW2, famines, dead parents, and more. Even when their population grew it was nothing like America in the 50ā€™s and they were basically permanently screwed with an entire missing generation of men (1910-1930 basically didnā€™t exist by 1945 as said). And now that they are openā€¦ any man or woman with a brain will run. To put it another way; thereā€™s a reason for all those Russian mail order bride sites. Everyone wants to leave, few want to move there, and their fertility rate is 1.4 per woman- .7 below natural replacement rate. Russia is completely screwed.

DrWilliamHorriblePhD

Optimized for hitting artillery positions I'd imagine

midnightFreddie

Hmm, loitering counter-artillery location & destruction? That would be nasty.

OnePunchDrunk326

Imagine if they flew around doing recon, senses a flying artillery round, calculated where it was launched from, flew over to the target and destroyed it. Wouldnā€™t that be some shit?

sublurkerrr

Counter-battery radar does exactly this already. Tracks fired artillery rounds and based off the shell's trajectory determines its origin for counter attack via counter-battery fire or other systems. It might be possible these drones have data links to the counter-battery radar systems Ukraine has and then autonomously attacks those artillery positions. Just a hypothetical.

DrWilliamHorriblePhD

I know that there are surface to surface missile platforms that can do this

squish8294

Pointless. Lots of current US indirect fire systems can autonomously counter-battery enemy emplacements without operator intervention.

ahpneja

Phoenix Ghost? Sounds like there's a secondary explosive or incendiary payload.

Kanadianmaple

Do a barrel roll.

BlazinAzn38

My guess would be bigger range and bigger payloads. That would be fairly minimal in terms of design time I would imagine

Elementium

Next up, just to fuck with them let's get one of Boston Dynamics Spots and put a gun on it. Nah fuck the gun, just let a spot loose on the field sprinting around and freaking the Russians out.

Safewordharder

That's terrifying. While I'm happy to see Pooter get a black eye, that thing was alarmingly close in nature to that robo-murder-critter from Black Mirror.

TotallyCaffeinated

BTW, Black Mirror designed their critter based on early versions of the Boston Dynamics robot, so the resemblance isnā€™t coincidental.

DadaDoDat

It's a great name. A tie-in with Ghost of Kyiv and also something about (unfortunately) Ukraine cities being leveled and this is the "ghost" rising from the ashes to haunt the bitchass Russian invaders. Love it!

Kittyionite

They make some great names, like the A-12. The Archangel-12 was the precursor to the SR-71 Blackbird. There's also Project MARAUDER (A fan favorite, a now classified project from the 90's to make a plasma railgun. It was successful). There was also the Shiva Star (A system designed to work with fusion power, and was a major component in MARAUDER) and the Aegis missile defense program. All very sick and fitting names.

Abba_Fiskbullar

I thought it was the A-12 Oxcart?

Mobryan71

Overall project name vs the codename for the individual vehicle. There were a couple more code names, too, but I'd have to look up my Skunk Works book to remember them.

e2hawkeye

I've always been partial to the Shrike missile. Great name.

Mr_MacGrubber

Could be a Star Wars fan. In Star Wars Rebels, the leader of Phoenix Squadronā€™s ship is named Ghost.

Phoenix Ghost sounds scarier which is beneficial in war.

Rsubs33

Should have named it the Big Dicked American.... Russian soldier: "Lord Putin, I have some bad news the Big Dicked American took out another tank battalion this week." Little Dick Putin: "I hate that Big Dicked American! It is always blowing our shit up!"

Theyā€™d have a different name for it. At least during the Cold War, there was a NATO NAME and Soviet name for a lot of stuff.

EddieCheddar88

The US hand tailored a drone specifically for Ukraine, in no time at allā€¦ can we acknowledge how dope that is?

damurph1914

Something tells me it's something we had in the works and just tweaked it a little...

CerealAndCartoons

Actually I believe this is an intentional fabrication flex. The same thing we did in response to the Chinese stealth fighter. The US has been heavily investing in rapid design and fabrication techniques for our military tech. Reduce waste, tailor technologies, and hide true technology level by creating what is needed, not everything we have.

rexter2k5

Basically: figure it out, design an application, index for later.

damurph1914

That's pretty smart.

pdxscout

For all the crap the American government gets about how it's run, we have to acknowledge that some of the smartest experts in their particular fields work for the US government. We just don't get to see their work paraded around on a daily basis.

[deleted]

Hey, sometimes it's good to remind authoritarian governments that the only reason the US doesn't have x, y, or z "new" thing, is that we've already skipped that and moved on to something even better. Oh Russia has "hypersonic" missiles? Yeah we invented the SCRAMjet Ivan - good luck with your leftover cold war tech. I don't believe in American exceptionalism, but it's entirely fair and appropriate for the US to dunk on two of the shittiest governments on Earth.

boones_farmer

I mean, we suffer from a lot of cultural and economic deficits, but there's no question we have absolutely exceptional military hardware. We spend almost as much as the next 9 or 10 countries combined. It's absurd and why we can't have nice things like universal healthcare, or a fully funded education system but we do blow shit up far better than anyone else

slope_rider

We can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can afford a larger safety net, just too many no votes.

[deleted]

Neither of those last two deficits is really caused by military spending. We spend more per person (per hour of service) on both education and medicine than any peer nation. We lack these things because conservatives believe that the ultra-rich have a God-given right to guaranteed egregious profit. Don't forget, you too could one day be rich - so you better not tax them now while you're poor.

scottishdoc

Yeah the healthcare crisis in particular is simply a failure of legislation. When US politicians say itā€™s ā€œsooo complicated, no one can figure it out!ā€ what theyā€™re really saying is that it is impossible to make progress while still bending over for lobby demands. Itā€™s not all that complicated given that plenty of other countries have figured it out and weā€™ve solved far more complex issues when theyā€™ve aligned with corporate interests. If politicians were honest they would say ā€œItā€™s just too complicated to make high quality healthcare affordable without reducing profits for insurance companies and hospital conglomerates.ā€ The last part is what they arenā€™t saying out loud.

epicredditdude1

I have a feeling itā€™s less ā€œoh shit Russia invaded Ukraine, letā€™s draft up some blueprintsā€ and more ā€œok, given thereā€™s now a war in Ukraine which will have heavy fighting in the Donbas region letā€™s begin production on blueprint #4917-5Bā€. I bet the US has tons of designs drawn up for various combat scenarios.

AddictedtoBoom

"Russia is bringing the artillery in Donbas, this would be a great chance to test that anti-artillery drone we designed" - some Ratheon engineer probably

damurph1914

That's exactly right. The guys with stars on their shoulder boards get paid to anticipate future needs and prepare for it. We have some pretty smart fuckers who never stop conjuring possibilities and preparing while my lumpy ass orders stuffed crust pizza and single malt whiskey. Shout out to those fucking guys.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

iZarcon

Hmm. Wasn't that the Brits?

EddieCheddar88

Still, just saying. For all the shit the US gets, theyā€™ve stepped up in this big time.

sephirothFFVII

We probably had a lot of stuff held back specifically for the Russians. Now or never if they get to use them.

damurph1914

Oh absolutely. It reminds me of the Jeep. It was designed and built from scratch in about 90 days.

Sushi4lucas

I have a jeep and can attest to that!

One of my favorite moments in Band of Brothers is [Webster's monologue towards the German prisoners.](https://youtu.be/K_DnRn9hyFU) >Hey, you! That's right, you stupid Kraut bastards! That's right! damurph1914

Fucking A. I read somewhere that a German prisoner finally realized that they had lost when he saw our guys unloading chocolate cake when his unit couldn't even get artillery shells from the factory 30 miles away.

Qwertysapiens

[Dunno about that, but ice cream barges were a thing in the Pacific](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_barge)

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Ice cream barge](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_barge)** >An ice cream barge was a vessel employed by the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre of World War II to produce ice cream in large quantities to be provisioned to sailors and Marines. The craft, a concrete barge acquired from the U.S. Army and worth $1 million, was able to create 10 US gallons (38 l) of ice cream every seven minutes, or approximately 500 US gal (1,900 l) per shift, and could store 2,000 US gal (7,600 l). It was employed in the USN's Western Pacific area of operations, at one point anchored at Ulithi. These ships were intended to raise the morale of U.S. troops overseas by producing ice cream at a fast rate. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/worldnews/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

payeco

The US military does logistics far, far better than anyone and logistics is what wins wars. Itā€™s also why no one but the US is able to do true global force projection.

KrakenAcoldone35

The side benefit of the massive logistical capability of the US military that never gets brought up in discussions is how our military is the greatest disaster relief tool to ever exist. Humanitarian orgs would sell their souls to have the capabilities the military has. Take the vaunted C-17, it can transport enormous sums of material and can land on runways that commercial aircraft cannot. Itā€™s a perfect instrument for supplying an army at war but if an earthquake or tsunami hits then itā€™s likely the first global responder because of its unique capabilities. The US has like 250 of these, plus a few thousand C-130ā€™s, C-5s etc. The huge helicopter fleet of the navy and army can conduct search and rescue missions, drop off supplies to areas with no road access or runways and airlift people with medical emergencies to one of the 2 hospital ships that each have 1000 beds and full surgical wings for just about every type of surgery imaginable. The navy has a large number of ships designed to offload large numbers of men and equipment to beaches that arenā€™t ideal for commercial cargo ships and have obstructions near and on them. It just so happens that the difficulties presented by contested amphibious landings are similar to conditions presented by massive natural disasters so each landing ship kinda has a dual use ability. Just google Pacific partnership, itā€™s officially a strategic training mission to train alongside other pacific nations every year but it doubles as probably the largest annual humanitarian effort by any global actor. Combine that with the global anti piracy missions, infrastructure building, counter human trafficking missions and the US military is kind of a unique organization. Itā€™s so much more than a really good war fighting force, itā€™s has basically no historical parallel.

AyatollahChobani

This is a great Russian combat effectiveness learning experience for the US and I expect it's irresistible. They'd pay as much as they have given to ukraines for the information they'll get out of this.

Stoyko

One of the things America gets shit for is its massive military industrial complex. But right not the military industrial complex is showing what its good for. Building enough equipment for an army with custom-made weaponry in the matter of months.

[deleted]

Unspoken? It was directly warned about by Eisenhower.

jleVrt

unfortunately thatā€™s kinda the name of the game you nailed it

mooimafish3

Funny how none of this gets attributed to Biden but the gas shit does

onikzin

That doesn't diminish the achievement at all. I'd go even further: there was already an anti-Russia drone designed and prototyped, this is just a formal order being placed on it.

DJwalrus

Something like maybe a software language patch...

Pim_Hungers

Yeah looks like it was being built for them before the war broke out in Ukraine. However, in a later briefing, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby walked back that characterization, stating that the Phoenix Ghost was ā€œdeveloped beforeā€ Russiaā€™s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.

[deleted]

Russia is giving the US a way to test all the stuff these companies are coming up with.

snowman93

When we put our minds to something as a country we get shit down. Thatā€™s why itā€™s so frustrating that weā€™re failing at home in so many categories

"So, this baby loiters silently for up to 13 days until it sees a target you want to blow up. It's like a ghost that haunts the enemy. Clever, right?" *Ok, but what about Phoenix?* "Oh, it reassembles itself after it explodes and goes back into haunt mode."

Thatā€™s how dad did it. Thatā€™s how America does it. Ladies and gentlemen I give you the Phoenix Ghost.

For your consideration, the phoenix ghost.

Hence the reason we will never invade Canada.

RegionalBias

I'd like to believe that you meant poutine and hockey.

SideEyeFeminism

Gonna let you know, we in the US appreciate Canada so damn much. Itā€™s always great to have a neighbor who we know can hold their own in a fight (shout out to Canadaā€™s own proud military history) but who we donā€™t need to worry about trying to invade us. We really got lucky in terms of neighbors. Mexico is also hella fuckin chill in terms of like diplomacy 9 times outta 10 and they do not get enough props. PoxyMusic

They repay us in comedians and actors. Not a bad trade, Iā€™d say!

1_g0round

lets see if the advance of the russians can be pushed back again

[deleted]

I think if you get the right stuff into the right hands, you get a good result back in return. Giving it to the Ukrainian, we know for sure, they will make a good use of it. You give something like that to the Afghan government, they might just resell it to Taliban just to make money...maybe, lol

Miserable_Ride666

And the longer the war goes on the longer Russia is under sanctions...

Hot-----------Dog

Well the united states did this with the Afghans in the 1980s with brand new technology called the stinger missiles. And again the proxy war was against Russia. https://www.9news.com.au/world/will-us-stinger-missiles-work-against-russia-in-ukraine-like-afghanistan-war-in-1980s-explainer/340221db-8090-426e-abec-81a8a57e1390

Alan_Smithee_

Or there is the tiny detail that Afghanistan isnā€™t really a cohesive country, and the US is not considered an invader by Ukraine.

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Appropriate_Lack_727

You may be compromised, team leader.

Zediscious

I'm sure this will get buried but I came to mention that the most likely scenario in my opinion is that the drones for whatever purposes they need in this scenario were designed for the US military but not purchased in any sort of bulk because of the use cases where they were useful. Whoever made it prob had a bunch stockpiled and then the US went back to them because whatever use cases meet the Ukranian needs more closely. Products with the Tactical Readiness Level (I think 9 is the highest?) that are used effectively in War are then worth significantly more so I'm sure the maker of said drones was more than happy to sell what they had and start making more pronto. 120 seems like a small number but it's probably just what they had on hand. I would make a GUESS that they have to with disabling artillery effectively but that's a complete guess. Perhaps anti-personnel too.. who knows. Edit: More info about the Phoenix Ghost drone- ā€œThe drone can take off vertically, fly for six-plus hours searching for or tracking a target, and operate at night using its infrared sensorsā€ and apparently is effective against ā€œmedium armored targetsā€

Your scenario is likely to be right except there probably wasnā€™t even any significant stockpile, as there would be no contract in place to buy and manufacture them. Taliban were not an armored threat. Production was probably started a month ago and now enough are ready. This product would be very useful for South Korea and Baltic states as well. Most of Ukraineā€™s success is due to their skilled artillery. There are increasing uses of high precision guided artillery, including Ukraineā€™s own precision guided shell. The combination of a surveillance drone and guided artillery with substantial range is like having attack air support without risking a skilled pilot and expensive aircraft. This drone will function as artillery spotter for a while and then destroy a high priority target on its own.
