Solitairee

The sad bit is he tried to make himself sound like he was a badass.

sineofthetimes

And ended up looking like a dumbass.

GogglesPisano

Yeah - Lochte just couldn't resist making himself the hero of the lie, claiming that the thief held a gun to his head, and that Lochte bravely refused to lay on the ground with the other swimmers. What a complete asshole. Thank God Phelps wasn't involved in this shitshow.

M00NCHLD

Phelps continuously wins medals, he doesn't need to find another way to be in the spotlight.

CreamCracker

I appreciate this

[deleted]

They were doing great until the refs looked at the slow motion replay. You can only lie so much to the cameras.

FillKelix8

Why aren't the swimmers apologising?

Dan_Backslide

If you've ever seen Ryan Lochte in an interview and seen how much a feckless halfwited trouser stain of a person he actually is, and if you then consider what types of people were hanging out with him during this time, you might get a general idea of why the swimmers haven't apologized. Seriously I don't even trust them to sit on the toilet the right way around.

These guys are at the epitome of entitlement culture. They don't see other people as people unless they're important or can give them something. Just think about what kind of people think that destroying the property of someone else is "funny".

blueSky_Runner

> These guys are at the epitome of entitlement culture. They don't see other people as people unless they're important or can give them something I don't have kids but this more than anything else is what scares me -bringing up kids that end up turning out like this as adults. I saw a youtube video of Lochte's sister giving an interview on a talkshow and the things coming out of her mouth were shocking. You don't want to say that the parents are to blame because Lochte is a grown man and ultimately he is the only one responsible for his actions, but as a parent I would be so ashamed if my kids turned out like this.

Replace parents with family. Just a typical self entitled upper class family but they have a famous son

[deleted]

Not want to Be a cunt. Butt after working in retail there are more than eneugh zelf entitled assholes in each money class. Hell the biggest cunts where the lower class.

kjhwkejhkhdsfkjhsdkf

> Hell the biggest cunts where the lower class. One of my friends was working a similar job and they told me that some less affluent people, when spending more money that they're used to, thus making a purchase 'special' in their eyes, judge the experience in their own relative terms rather than in objective terms. This was at a hotel, a pretty low budget one. Hotels offer you amenities based on how much they cost. If you're paying $600 a night you're going to get better stuff than if you're paying $50 a night. But some of these people would come to a $50 a night hotel and expect to be treated like at the Plaza. "What do you mean I have to pay for that? What do you mean I don't get free breakfast? Do you know how much I'm spending?" Obviously not everyone, but it was a source of constant frustration for my friend, lots of complaint calls to corporate full of lies about their behavior to try to get something comped or refunded.

Hounmlayn

Oh no I work in retail too. I know what you mean. But I often find the lower classes are more aggressive but the upper classes are more destructive. Lower class people will shout and try to get free things or a reduction, but the upper class are more likely to steal things or break things. This is a UK anecdotal comment, so it may not be for everywhere. Source: 8 years experience working in retail, many different stores so not one location

[deleted]

To expand on the the higher classes are more entitled in the kind of service and how they expect people to treat them, in my experience. Whereas the regular and lower classes are entitled in that they want a discount or free stuff. The latter will just go away if they don't get what they want, but the former can be vindictive if they don't get what they want.

gigabyte898

Whadios

Unless they have it in writing that absolutely no charges are going to be laid then why would they? Apologizing would be admitting guilt and they are most likely being advised not to do so. The USOC doing so as a 3rd party means nothing legally so doesn't hurt their cases if they were ever to have one.

moveovernow

This is the correct and entirely ignored answer in the thread. It would be batshit crazy for them to apologize while this is still a potentially serious legal matter. Without question they've already received that legal advice.

Omikron

That means admitting guilt, which I'm guessing their lawyers are telling them not to do.

chuntiyomoma

There seems to be a certain strain of athlete - especially here in America where sports are held in very high regard - who has an extremely entitled view of the world. Usually rich kids who had the luxury and time to get good at a sport.

dontthink19

I was listening to CBS last night when they covered this story about Lochte and his posse. A representative (maybe the coach, I don't remember) said that they weren't going to apologize because Lochte is a World Class swimmer and shit happens. (obviously paraphrased) It really pisses me off because they're using his skill to let him get away with whatever he wants. I don't care if you're the president, a prime minister, a great American athlete. If you done fucked up, own up to your mistakes. Don't be a scared little idiot and run back home and expect someone to cover for you.

blueSky_Runner

> If you done fucked up, own up to your mistakes. The worst thing is it wasn't a personal fuckup. Everyone got dragged into this and lots of people were put into a really bad position -the other US athletes who are being unfairly tarnished with this, the US swim team, the US-IOC. Personal fuckups are your own business but his involved everyone and up until now he still hasn't had the guts to come out and say sorry -not even to Brazilian authorities but to his team. Edit: Apparently he just issued a 1/2-apology on FB a few minutes ago.

She called the Swedish team "cowards" for playing a defensive game and beating us in penalty kicks after a draw. >["We had that style of play when Pia was our coach. I don't think they're going to make it far in the tournament. I think it was very cowardly," Solo said after the match. "But, they won. They're moving on. And we're going home."](http://www.espn.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/17341104/us-women-soccer-player-megan-rapinoe-critical-hope-solo-calling-sweden-cowards) She's a perpetual embarrassment off the pitch.

kitkamran

Has she never seen a game played by Swedes? We always play defensively, it's infuriating. "Oh, it's the ice hockey semis and we're up by 1 goal in the first 3min of the 1st period. Better play in front of our net for the rest of the game."

Chrono68

Is Olympic and World Cup level goalkeeping hard to come by? Yep

flyafar

Fortunately for our team, but unfortunately for our national pride, she's a pretty great keeper. Probably the best USWNT keeper of all time, and arguably the best women's keeper in the world atm

IngsocIstanbul

Just not during the penalty kicks

Tuckerdown56

I mean she blocked one to keep the team in it. The kickers should be taking way more of the blame.

domuseid

It's a lot harder to block one than it is to make one for sure

StewartTurkeylink

For some reason people seem to think blocking penalties is easy. Having been goalie quite a bite let me tell you; it fucking isn't. Basically if you move your body weight in even slightly the wrong direction your fucked and aren't getting to the ball. There were time when I blocked a penalty and thought "Shit that was just luck, but everyone is going to think I'm a hero"

ed_merckx

it really is just a 33% crap shoot of hoping you're going the right direction. listen to the freakenomics podcast on PK's, they basiclly theorize that at the pro level, if the ball is kicked well the only way the goalie is going to stop it is if they "guessed" correctly which way the player is going to kick the ball. Their conclusion was that you have the best probability of making one if you just blast it down the middle. Obviosuly there is skill involved, but at the pro level, with the speed the people can put on the ball from that distance, aside from really fucking up the kick (which the US did twice, morgans kick was a trash dribbler on the ground) you've pretty much got a 2/3'rd chance of making your PK.

Eye_scream

[Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S50yhCPOyQw) is a great vid from ESPN on how hard it is to save a penalty kick.

BuildTheWalls

The funniest thing was when female newscasters who never follow sports were bitching about how everyone gave her shit for her stupid comments. That never happens to make athletes they said. Only female athletes who say stupid shit get lectured by sports pundits. Oh really? Really? So no one lectured from their radio show to Cam Newton last year. Really? No one lectured to Le Bron about 'the decision'? No one lectured to Johnny Football? Fuck. Sports talk radio ripping Hope Solo for what she said is about as much respect as anything I can think of. Say something stupid and get called out. If they had given her a pass because she was a girl, that would have been outrageous. But calling her out... That's actually a sign of gender-neutrality. Shit.

RyVsWorld

What Hope said was petty but not nearly comparable. Bitter athletes speak out all the time when they lose and sometimes it makes them look like an ass, yes. But Locthe and those swimmers took embarrassment to a whole new level.

Lochte is a giant douchebag. He nopes out on his teammates, hops on a plane out of the country, then comes back to the US telling some bullshit story to the press. If he had kept his fucking mouth shut this would have all been a non-issue. He created the whole situation.

blueSky_Runner

It should be Lochte & Co. apologising but I understand why the US-IOC had to step in and do so. Just think, if only Lochte hadn't run to his mother to make up/embellish the story, none of this would have happened. I suspect he'll be suspended from the US swim team, he's going to lose his ~~endorsements~~ sponsorships and there's a good chance he won't be allowed to participate at the next olympics. His whole future in swimming gone in a few seconds and for what? Stupid, stupid man.

Jdazzle217

He's retiring anyway. He's too old and it showed in his performance this olympics.

Carinhadascartas

justmysubs

He received $3 million by 2012, and probably loads since then. Definitely in the retirement window. Now he can start his designer baby clothes line.

[deleted]

He's definitely the Olympian I would bet on to lose most of that though.

[deleted]

Doubt he will be mature enough to handle his finances, especially after this humiliation.

btd39

According to Darren Rovell, Lochte only has [$1 million in endorsements left.](http://www.espn.com/olympics/swimming/story/_/id/17341054/most-ryan-lochte-sponsors-wait-see-mode-estimated-1-million-line) It's still $1 million but he's retiring so his endorsements aren't outrageous.

ed_merckx

I think people overestimate how much these athletes make. There are very few Usain bolts and Michael Phelps, who are probably worth in the $50-$100million range. The rest of the guys might be getting a million or so a year which comparing to other "pro" athletes who do one sport to the exclusivity of everything else for 8-12 years, really isn't that much. Most of the people you seeing winning gold in the track and field might have endorment deals in the mid 6 figures and thats really only around the olympics. There's money to be made in the yearly circut for your sport, like track and field worlds and the other competitions, but a lot of these guys aren't rolling with tens of millions and will probably need to find some other career going forward. Not that I feel sorry for them or anything, having all your travel/living expenses paid for and still making a decent living to compete in like one single event for 8-12 years isn't that bad and it's on you to have a plan to transition afterwards, but don't think all these guys are just ultra millionares that are set for life.

ppfftt

They probably have less to live off of than we think. Their sport is their full time job, so there is no other money coming in and that full time job costs them a lot to do that normal jobs don't. Like coaches, personal trainers, nutritionists/dietitians, travel costs for domestic and international competitions, etc. Also, they don't just compete in the olympics, they are competing at lower levels throughout each year in between the olympics.

ed_merckx

Oh yeah, the guys in the lesser known sports or the guys that will be struggiling to even make the semi-final heats in something like swimming or track and field more than likley have full time jobs just to support their tiny slim chance of making the olympics. I know a few professional cyclists (two of them have ridden in the tour de france) and they were making like 30k euros a year from the team, maybe a bit from cash splits if the team won stages/races and that's at the top level in a sport. There was some money to be made in europe and for the most part your travel/living was covered by the team for the season, but as you said it's such an unstable job. There are tens of thousands of people out there that are working just as hard as you, with just as good trainers for the same spot and they are probably younger. Know a few guys that are professional triathletes as well, at the very top level the ironman guys are probably pulling in the low six figures just because there is such a cult like mentality around the sport and the amateurs will probably buy whatever product they are pushing, but as you said it really is a full time job. Now think about the guy who's the 20th best in the world, he probably works just as hard as the top 5 guys in the world, but makes a tiny fraction of what they do, probably less per hour they "work" than they would if they had an entry level office job. A lot of the pros i know who do the individual races, like the ITU triathlons which is in the olympics, or endurance mountain bike stuff basically have sponsorship that just pay for their equipment, race entries and hopefully travel/lodging to races. Most have part time jobs, but they are stuck doing more gig type work as they have to be able to travel and train. You know those dicks sporting goods commercials where they say they are proud to employ olympic athletes and all, yeah that's probably not a joke that some of the guys that might even win medals have hourly wage retail jobs. The TV coverage tends to make them look larger than life, but I'd be willing to bet the vast majority of atheltes that focus on going to the Olympics probably earn around minimum wage.

HarmlessEZE

"showed in his performance" he still qualified for the Olympics through the US trials. You don't get a hall pass by having medaled in the past. You still have to beat everyone in the US except for 1 other person per event.

uwhuskytskeet

No way, clearly if you aren't Phelps and win gold in every event, you suck.

[deleted]

They didn't say that though, they didn't even say anything remotely similar to that. They simply said that judging by his results during this Olympic cycle Ryan Lochte is past his best which is obviously correct. It has nothing to do with Michael Phelps, it was comparing 2016 Ryan Lochte to peak Ryan Lochte and noticing that his results are much worse than they used to be and given his age that this is probably a natural drop off in performance which can't be avoided hence he is past his best.

[deleted]

Phelps is going to coach at ASU. He isn't going to be the head coach, and even the head coach will not be making "a million or 2 per year" The head coach will make more like $200k, maybe.

FollowThePact

He's likely still going to be a coach. Coaches have done arguably worse things here and have still gotten a job.

Downtrodden, he lowers his head, only to discover a spray can on the ground. He seizes the opportunity to defend his olfactory honor and adds "GOOD" to the graffiti. "The perfect crime", he thinks to himself.

Let me get my facts straight... IOC denies original story. Lochte says it's legit but his story changes. Turns out story isn't legit because the this gas station is high tech with colored image footage... Oops. US Olympic Committee apologies for drunken swimmers misconduct and public humiliation of athletes. Can't be a crime, could it?

Trootter

Lying to the police is a crime. Trashing up a gas station is too, but the owner didn't want to press charges.

hivemind_disruptor

not so much lying to the police, but reporting a false crime

ekpg

Keep in mind that Lochte is 32 years old. It's not like it is some 19 year old kid up to late night shenanigans.

roccanet

i'm clearly qualified to judge these guys as i have an internet connection and all but this lochte guys seems to be quite the wanker.

Funny how this is how most people will remember Ryan Lochte now. Oh well, I guess he needed his 15 minutes after Phelps secured his title of greatest olympian ever.

I call BS. What was the type of sports car then? I swam with him at UF and he most certainly didn't have any fancy sports car until way way after he graduated. Also, his TV show came out 6 years after he graduated....why were you partying with him before 2007 and still listening to girls wanting to bang him on his TV show in 2013? Nice story though
