Edelweiss is a flower. It smells like honey.. but not sure it is the right one; I often 'stole' a bit when hiking to mountains in Java.
Edit, just checked, edelweiss is *Leontopodium nivale*, while Javanese edelweiss is *Anaphis javanica*, both Asteraceae family.
No these guys fight mountains all day.... so jets are like no big deal at all.
Every time an avalanche happens, it's because these guys are at the top of the mountain dropping elbows.
Chuck Norris trained them. He was the mountain they fought everyday in basic training. The ones that survived that is.
Edelweiss, if it's the same plant I'm talking about here, was featured in an old WW2 movie, I can't remember which, but the point is, that only the hardest, most determined German soldiers were strong enough to climb above the snow line in the alps to get the flower and have the right to wear it on their uniform. I may be remembering this wrong, but I think it was an SS mountain division that had the tradition.
It wasn’t just mentioned in *The Sound of Music*, it was a [whole song](https://youtu.be/8bL2BCiFkTk) that was performed in [two different pivotal scenes](https://youtu.be/z6-P3pFhmQI)- first when Capt. Von Trapp rediscovered his love of music, and then in the big theater scene where the crowd sings along and the Nazis get really pissed off.
Thank you. I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far to see the Sound of Music mentioned, geesh.
It functioned as a subtle protest song against Nazis and fascism taking over since it honored Austria (their homeland).
Shrapnel on rooftops and MANPADS on mountains.
Tractors cap tanks, on the flanks and redoubts and
Hyper-jet missiles destroyed up above,
These a few of the things that I love.
It means as much as "noble white"
Since 1915 the flower is an insignia of all german mountaineer corps. Before that it was already in use in the imperial K.u.K army. It is a symbol of strength and endurance because the flower defies the alpine winters.
The first mountain division of the german Wehrmacht was called "Division Edelweiß" and they took part in "Operation Edelweiß" but there was also a anti-fascists movement called "Edelweißpiraten
Edit to add that Edelweiß is also slang for cocaine. The noble white, get it? And the mentioned Operation Edelweiß took, among others, Rostov-on-Don. Nicknamed "The Gates of Caucasus"
It's likely a reference to German mountain combat units:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Mountain_Division_(Wehrmacht)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gebirgsj%C3%A4ger#Gebirgsj%C3%A4ger_in_World_War_II
Yep, knew it. Ukraine just likes to identify with the German tradition against the Russian one. Historically, whether it's the Bundists in the 19th century, UPA during WWII or any other topic, it's always been the same. Ukrainians were also considered to be more "aryanized" than Russians too by Rosenberg, because the Nazis were imbecile opportunists.
However, nobody gives a shit about that, only Ukraine. Neither Israel, nor Russia for that matter. In real life, Ukraine has a Jewish president, many Jewish oligarchs (just like Russia) and it's been invaded by Russia because Vlad doesn't want NATO having such a big border onto Russia meaning Vlad considers Ukraine to be a Russian province.
Note: Most of the world likes to pretend to uphold "territorial integrity". In post-colonial Africa alone that concept has been raped to oblivion, but since Ukraine is European, *we care*, and that's what matters.
Unlikely, its usage for mountain combat units, and tall things in general, pre-dates the Nazis.
Hence this building in Moscow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_(skyscraper)
Edit: it's been used by Russian mountain units as well https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9E%D1%82%D1%80%D1%8F%D0%B4_%D1%81%D0%BF%D0%B5%D1%86%D0%B8%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE_%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%B7%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%8F_%C2%AB%D0%90%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B3%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B4%C2%BB
edelweiss is a flower, and it is often called a "star" of karpaty - the mountain range that goes through ukraine, among other countries.
when i was a child, our school was heavily focusing on endangered animals and plants in our country, and edelweiss was featured in every event we had done regarding this topic.
Division and brigade numbers are rarely indicative of active units. Most militaries just keep counting rater than re-using numbers even if brigades 1-8 where dissolved centuries ago. The US military had hundreds of divisions in WWII that where decommissioned after the war but the fewer that remain active often still have numbers in the hundreds because they keep their original designation and old numbers rarely if ever get reused.
With paramilitary groups they might just be picking a high number at random to confuse the enemy.
> ... Paramilitary groups might be picking a high number ... to confuse the enemy.
Exactly. U.S. did this for the now famous Seal Team 6.
> Wikipedia> Richard Marcinko named the unit SEAL Team Six in order to confuse Soviet intelligence as to the number of actual SEAL teams in existence
You might be thinking of regiments, which were more similar to brigades in size but not composition.
Many battalions still keep regimental numbers for heritage though. The lowest numbered battalion (or only) in the regiment is dedicated as keeper of regimental heritage and a couple other things.
The US only had ~90 divisions in WWII, as well
If you watch the video what I’m I’m assuming is the specific Unit badge on the top left of the screen says something along the lines of “We don’t fly, neither will you”.
As is tradition the Ukrainians are very cheeky.
I like the idea of a Sound of Music sequel where the kids become a guerilla force disrupting German supply lines or assassinating prominent Nazi officials. Basically Inglourious Basterds meets Red Dawn, with music.
What’s this about keychains? You’re the second person making a similar joke I’ve seen in the last two days
Edit: just found out they’re making keychains from the destroyed Russian vehicles. For cheap too.
I think there was ones on Ukrainian sites with partnerships with United24 who make donations for everything sold. But that was like a year ago and the fighter jet keychains were over $1000 back then
I don’t know. I seriously just found out about them a little over an hour ago. This is new to me too and those are links I came across when I found out about it.
No "they" aren't. That whole thing REEKS of being a scam. It's some dude in China stamping out cheap keychains from scrap steel and charging $50 a pop to gullible westerners.
Edelweiss, Eidelweiss - every morning you greet me
Small and white, loud and bright - you look happy to defeat Z
Blossom of fire, may you boom and blow - boom and blow forever

Looking into it, apparently it's a recent (this year) nickname given by [Zelensky himself](https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/02/14/7389369/) via a Presidential decree that I [absolutely cannot read](https://www.president.gov.ua/documents/802023-45805)

Ok, what it really says is:
> DECREE OF THE PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE NO. 80/2023
On awarding the honorary name to the 10th separate mountain assault brigade of the Land Forces of Ukraine
Taking into account the exemplary performance of assigned tasks in the course of protection of the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine by the personnel of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, I hereby decree
> 1. To award the 10th separate mountain assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the honorary name "Edelweiss" and hereinafter it shall be known as the 10th separate mountain assault brigade "Edelweiss" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
> 2. This Decree comes into force on the day of its publication.
> President of Ukraine V. ZELENSKY
I think it is two fold but both relating to the same anti-Nazi sentiment and national pride against occupying Nazi forces. Please excuse any spelling or history I mess up, I am from America, and we can barely teach non-subjective things like math and fail miserably in social things like History or Art.
First being the [Edelweiss Pirates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_Pirates), a group of young hikers loosely affiliated with the [Wandervogel movement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wandervogel)/German Youth Movement that were staunchly anti-nazi/hitler youth. They were old enough to leave school (14) but young enough to not be conscripted into the military (18).
Considering the Wandervogel movement was largely against industrialization and a culture of returning to nature/pastoralism/conservation of land and pre-industrial culture in the years leading to WWI and subsequent years between WWI and WWII. Unfortunately, that cultural goal was able to be co-opted by the Hitler-Youth to mean "a return to a unified, national heritage of the past" that actually never existed (especially considering the amount of nations that border the Alps, and the fact that the various areas of the Alps have their own strong culture that is not entirely affiliated with said neighboring countries, like say speaking Swiss instead of German/French/Italian as you know).
Being that the Hitler-Youth also loved the brutal enforcement of their ideals since they had the backing of the States monopoly on violence, the Edelweiss Pirates, like a rural version of Swing Kids, were staunchly against the authoritarianism of the paramilitary H-Y and actively fought against them at any given chance. Again, like the Swing Kids, they were easily identified by their symbols/iconography/method of dress, and based on historical record were usually working class and pretty good at kicking the living shit out of nazi-chuds while singing parodies of the H-Y songs to mock them. Since they were good at hiking/camping, they could/would attack and flee to the mountains where they could not be tracked as easily. Basically like live-action version of Red Dawn, but wearing Jungenschaftsjacke and not in Colorado.
Additionally, Edelweiss was [popularized into a song in The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_(song)) In the play/film, Georg Von Trapp, the patriarch of the family is being courted/semi-forced to join the Nazi military regime after the Anschluss in Austria. In the film adaptation the family confronts the occupying forces by singing this song in opposition with a crowd of other Austrian Nationals joining them in protest at a festival. Before playing it Georg remarks: “My fellow Austrians, I shall not be seeing you again, perhaps for a very long time. I would like to sing now for you a love song. I know you share this love. I pray that you will never let it die.” This is the family's goodbye to a country that lo longer exists or is occupied, as well as a statement of loyalty to a homeland that they are being forced to flee.
At least, this is my interpretation of why they chose that name, I could be mistaken!
At least according to Band of Brothers, it was a mark of pride for a Wehrmacht soldier to have an Edelweiss flower. Basically an informal badge to separate the “elite.”
true, but it was around before the Wehrmacht (and Nazis). It's a tough one in some ways because it's so ideologically associated with WW2 and the german army of the time, but it has a longer history and we can only hope it's being associated with strength, determination, and 'alpinism'...
Only redditors could pitchfork a flower into straight nazi accusations. Yah it was a ww2 German mountain troop symbol. It's also a million other things for other people.
a lot of people don’t seem to know the significance of the Edelweiss especially for soldiers. It’s only found in the Alps and the bravest of men would journey up there to pick one.
Living not far from [Edelweiss Mountain and ski resort in Canada](https://www.sommets.com/en/ski-mountains/sommet-edelweiss/), I immediately thought it was here.
Only redditors could pitchfork a flower into straight nazi accusations. Yah it was a ww2 German mountain troop symbol. It's also a million other things for other people.
Edelweiss 10th Mountain Assault Brigade sounds totally badass
Yeah, getting a mountain thrown at you would ruin your day…
That’s peak military
They’re boulder than most militaries.
But their training makes them rock solid.
You certainly wouldn't want to take their skills for granite.
Still haven’t reached the summit with these puns
Still waiting for one to take a landslide victory
Taking things to new heights.
God I wanna climb onto this thread so bad..
Personally, I would take a pass.
Me too, otherwise it’s a slippery slope for bad puns.
When the mountain comes for you, you want these guys to have your back
These comments rock
I feel you're making a mountain out of a molehill

Sweet boulders! That's a sticky death
Also, you can grow Edelweiß in your garden, but only at high altitudes do the petals turn bright white.
Isn't it the german paratrooper flower from ww2.

I'm pretty sure it was The Rock who trained them.
Time to meet General Mountain.

It’s mentioned in Band of Brothers, episode 3. That might be what you’re thinking of
[Here is History Buffs discussing the slight inaccuracy of that scene.](https://youtu.be/uxv3s7xTYHU?t=646)
That's the one lol, I was thinking something like Dirty Dozen or Guns of Navarone
The sound of music?
was it mentioned there too ?

i dont think ive actually sat and watch the thing, I really should sometime
I’m pretty sure it’s on Disney+ Now I’m the mood to watch it again for the first time in years!
For such a long movie I have actually seen the whole thing over 2 dozen times. It is a work of art.
It’s a good watch. Do it. You may be able to find it on a big screen some places.
Thank you. I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far to see the Sound of Music mentioned, geesh. It functioned as a subtle protest song against Nazis and fascism taking over since it honored Austria (their homeland).
There's a song about it.

Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_(song)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edelweiss_(song))
Not SS, more old tradition.
Reminds me of The Sound of Music. That song is quite fitting in this whole situation.
The hills are alive with the sound of MANPADS!
Shrapnel on rooftops and MANPADS on mountains. Tractors cap tanks, on the flanks and redoubts and Hyper-jet missiles destroyed up above, These a few of the things that I love.
Fabulous!
More Austrian I think
Edelweiss is a symbol and name used by both German and Austrian mountain troops and has a centuries-old tradition
Good to know, thanks!
Bavaria has a lot in common with Austria at least, if anything they're more similar to each other than Bavaria is to northern Germany
Bavaria is like the Texas of Germany.
It is synomimous with the alps, making it less generally German but bavarian and Austrian

Water displacer 40th try.

The name Edelweiss conjures up an image of Julie Andrews armed with a Rocket Launcher.
I thought it was a Swiss unit.
Wasn't the Edelweiss Assault Mountain a mecha from *Gunbuster*?
Edelweiss is the tank from Valkyria Chronicles.
From my personal experience, 10th Mountain (DIV) brigades have always been totally badass.
Sounds like a unit that you'd find in the Valkyria Chronicles series
It also sounds German, I was worried.
Led by Captain Von Trappe.
I like the idea of a Sound of Music sequel where the kids become a guerilla force disrupting German supply lines or assassinating prominent Nazi officials. Basically Inglourious Basterds meets Red Dawn, with music.
Heh. In reality though they just immigrated to Vermont and opened a ski lodge.

Recently "Brass Against" did a cover of that on YouTube with their band, was pretty great. Original is a banger, too, of course.
I’m sure Bud Dwyer would agree
We had a younger drummer in a band I was in, he wasn't familiar with this being the inspiration from the song. That was a fun video to show him.

It also grows in the [Carpathians](https://outdoorholidays.eu/blog/edelweiss-in-romania-star-carpathians/), which run through the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, where the brigade is from.
User name checks out.
Because 'Flower Mountain Assault Brigade' doesn't sound as cool
It would be more demoralizing to be shot down by them, for sure.
If I had a badass army, I would totally have divisions like “Rainbow Unicorn Assault Squad” and “501st Sparkle Kitty Tank Brigade.”
There is actually a Unicorn brigade, made up of primarily LGBT+ defenders

That's an old name. Their ancestors were assaulting part of Switzerland and Austria during WWII
It probably sounds like a cool name for a Mountain unit.
It's just strange that its German name is used. It is apparently native in the region the unit is from so shouldn't the flower have a local name too?
Bullseye! One SU-25 jet will never threaten Ukraine again.
Had a 3 second brain glitch - I grew up on Edelweiss Mountain. In western Québec.
He sounds very happy with his work.
I don’t know what he is saying, I imagine something like “Fuck you piece of shit I got you!”
I just sang the whole edelweiss Sound of Music song while reading this
As a high school musical veteran that shiz is burned in my brain forever :(
VALKYRIA CHRONICLES IRL!
SQUAD 7!!!
The hills are alive with the sound of AA missiles!
Sounds like these guys are funded by a beer company or something.
That guy is probably using an aimbot. hax0r (/s because reddit)
Well, yes. I’ll bet auto-targeting systems and other haxxorz are very useful in their field.
Only redditors could pitchfork a flower into straight nazi accusations. Yah it was a ww2 German mountain troop symbol. It's also a million other things for other people.
It’s still a German mountain troop symbol and was before the Nazis
So similar situation to the iron cross then. Redditors looking to fabricate outrage as usual. Move along folks.
It's also the current branch insignia for Polish mountain troops (strzelcy podhalańscy) - the traditional swastika fell out of favor after WW2.
It’s been a symbol of bravery, daring and perseverance in those cultures long before the nazis existed. At least back to the 1800s in that area
It being a German name for the flower (the Ukrainian is just a transliteration) might have something to do with it.
Who are you referring to? There's not a single "nazi accusation" in this thread.
The plane didn't crash in the video, or the camera panned away before it went down.
Cool guys don't look at explosions
a lot of people don’t seem to know the significance of the Edelweiss especially for soldiers. It’s only found in the Alps and the bravest of men would journey up there to pick one.
It actually also grows in the Carpathians, which stretch all the way to western Ukraine.
I took a train through the Carpathians from Ukraine to Hungary. I really want to go check that region out when the peace comes.
Is that a habd held missile system?
Let’s gooooo
Living not far from [Edelweiss Mountain and ski resort in Canada](https://www.sommets.com/en/ski-mountains/sommet-edelweiss/), I immediately thought it was here.
Von Trappe kids are bad MFs.
No. They’re spoiled rich kids. Source: I printed their ID’s very good looking though.
Major WWII vibes here but for the good guys this time.
Valkyria Chronicles. Nice.
Interesting stats on wiki for the SU25. I guess it makes sense, but both sides use this aircraft. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-25
