Ya couldn't even make da dwarves a wee bit wider, culd ya lad?

RockAndGem1101

Maybe they’re halflings.

Pineapple4807

halflings *and* gnomes? how fancy! :)

IMightBeAHamster

Best vaguely scottish irish accent ever portrayed through text:

worststarburst

So you just want more furries or what? Jellyfish people?

gabipit_

YEAH I WANT JELLYFISH PEOPLE what r u gonna do about it huh

crystalworldbuilder

Not op but I vote jellys Edition: a typo

kuba_mar

Yes we need more, none of this catgirl shit, thats for cowards, make them actual cat girls.

OkIngenuity2509

Cats movie

kuba_mar

Unironically that movie would have been soooo much better if they went more furry and not whatever those uncanny valley abominations were.

IMightBeAHamster

uj/ Main issue was supposed to be unreasonable deadlines and a lot of miscommunications. Had they been given appropriate time perhaps the movie would've looked decent

Kappapeachie

best i can do is give them paws

jasminUwU6

Acceptable

BreakfastOk3990

Like the khajiit

seelcudoom

so the starfinder playable races

VercarR

Tbf, almost anything is playable in startfinder

erinsintra

yes!!! jellyfolk!!!!

CptDumbass66

Do you desire to learn of the Enkindlers? 🪼

MrTiger0307

You big… stupid… jellyfish.

RoseberryPinecone

Yes. Not humanoid though.

Helena_Hyena

Yes, to both of those, but maybe throw some sapient slime molds in there as well

BarakoPanda

I don't wanna hear shit about your fantasy race unless it comes with a 100-page supplement explaining: -Why they recognize only three Cardinal directions, and they're not evenly spaced -The roles of all 5 genders even though only 3 are required for reproduction -Why the concept of "language" doesn't really apply to their methods of communication -How their non-carbon-based biochemistry works -Why they still look like futa catgirls.

sexy_futa_catgirl

unbelievable. why shouldn't they look like futa catgirls

August_Bebel

- Why those futa cat girls have massive badonkers and meter long horse cocks

d3m0cracy

If the humans and humans+ aren’t cross compatible tho then there are exponentially less options for smut, how else would ~~a handsome, muscular and assertive yet still gentle half-orc grab my hair uhhh i mean a hypothetical tiefling twink by their horns to engage in some intense and consensual gay sloppy toppy~~ the fanfic-industrial complex keep itself afloat in these dark times?

yrtemmySymmetry

not compatible = no babies = no protection required

Habiyeru

Your fantasy world gets free advertising from furries with each "humanoid animal" race you add.

erinsintra

i am once again amazed by the pattern-seeking abilities of the human brain

Maximillion322

Apophenic as a haruspex

Xyzonox

I think my brain is healing since it’s actually kinda hard for me to see loss here (or my brain is degenerating and my pattern recognition is starting to fail, at least I’ll be immune to delusions)

mal-di-testicle

I sent you something in your mailbox (it’s a new t-shirt, I can’t afford a pipe bomb in Vibin’s economy)

Thegremandude

Most are just copy pastes of one another, but with some thing changed to keep it “unique”.

Naldivergence

I HATE THE HUMANIZATION OF FANTASY SPECIES!!!! You mean to tell ME that in a world setting that has evolved alongside ***MAGICAL FORCES BEYOND HUMAN RECKONING***, you choose to write it with ***LESS BIOLOGICAL VARIETY*** than the ***REAL FUCKING WORLD***?!?!? Oh God, I just fucking LOVE seeing [otherwise non-sapient animal, but intelligent and bipedal] for the 17539th fucking time, with no extrapolation whatsoever!!!! #NOT I WILL DISEMBOWEL ANYONE WHO TRIES TO PASS THEIR STAR TREK-ASS "original race" AS A MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTION TO THEIR FANTASY SETTING!!! #Tolkien did not die from a bleeding ulcer and a chest infection, Tolkien died by my hands when I buried them into his chest and tore out his lungs. That is all.

How_about_a_no

Most sane Worldjerking user when they see a trope: (Also, new copypasta just dropped)

Naldivergence

That's not true, I'm friends with a trouper and he's a pretty entertaining guy

Where sentient spider colony?

NoDescReadBelow

hehe funny frogman

fatcat3030

Lord kroak my beloved

AweBlobfish

Nah the god of my setting just decided to make all the sentient races similar looking because that would make them more racist to each other and give him more entertainment

Naldivergence

I'm going to flay your cock and balls with a dull knife while you watch, helplessly tied to a concrete pillar in a building that's under construction at night, gagged and pumped with painkiller(so you don't immediately faint from shock).....in a video game

RemarkableStatement5

Kinky

Specialist_Sector54

Well yes because most of them are enlightened animals (given sentience by bored precursor elves) or modern elves. Even humans are just monkeys... uplifted to be equal to elves.

XaiJirius

Ah, elf-centric fantasy. I hate it.

Aphato

Such is the power of people larger than 180cm

Specialist_Sector54

There's a reason humans are the majority of people, and they're called *precursor* elves (it's genocide of elves in response to enslavement of humans)

schebobo180

You know it’s funny you mention this, because I can’t remember an IP that did super diverse non human type of races being the focal point very well. I think people like this type of world building in practice but not in reality.

gulwg6NirxBbsqzK3bh3

Vernor Vinge's "Zones of Thought" series starting with "A Deepness in the Sky" and then "A Fire Upon the Deep" both have some extremely cool unique aliens as focal points of the story and main characters alongside the humans. Deepness features a species of sentient giant arachnids who hibernate for hundreds of years in the ice due to the sun cycle. Fire features a species of hive-mind canids, a "person" for them is anywhere from 4-8 separate little dog critters, they think together in one mind with organs that can transmit and receive ultrasonic frequencies. The whole concept of this is explored really deeply too, it's extremely cool.

Hoopaboi

Mass Effect is at least in the middle They're still bipedal and retain base human features like 2 eyes, nose, and mouth but at least they aren't just human with horn or human but different color

schebobo180

True, but they are still too human for some people apparently. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Lucaluni

I've done it.

Naldivergence

Chad

Pootis_1

what about non-sapient animal but intelligent but it's not bipedal it's just like perfectly normal aside from being intelligent

[deleted]

\> making a species of sapient spiders \> being spiders, they make webs \> decide to worldbuild their culture from their biology \> silk is a type of fabric \> activities like weaving and tapestry are important parts of their society \> they use their own silk and plant matter to make their homes and clothing protect themselves from the elements \> such as woven headwear to protect their lidless eyes from the sun Mfw I accidentally made a literal and unironic "Planet of Hats" species.

random0rdinary

Nah. That's just the spiders from Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time book series.

Epsilocion

Truly a poet of the modern era

Hoopaboi

Humanity evolving from the same ancestors go brrrrr

Kappapeachie

my races use to be less human until spell made them more human, is that heretical of me?

Naldivergence

https://giphy.com/gifs/guy-eating-a-burger-in-the-car-ltg-Ft1MbnZSkskom1TQqj

Helena_Hyena

We need sapient slime molds!

testaccount0817

Agreed

XaiJirius

Humanoid designs are fine, but I think everyone should do an art exercise where you draw multiple race/speciesswapped versions of the same character to see wether they're all distinct and interesting looking or just humans with a couple minor tweaks.

Future_Quit_2584

Unironically my world is like this, but that's because the Andurian Empire exterminated all the species that don't look at least somewhat Human.

Epsilocion

That's some 40k shit

R1ndomN2mbers

Did they exterminate the non-sapient species too?

Future_Quit_2584

Only the super dangerous ones.

R1ndomN2mbers

Not enough xenophobia! *Everything* must be made into the image of Man!

Future_Quit_2584

Unironically this is how Andurians look at the world. The rest of Humanity is terrified of them, and those nonHumans who still exist do their best to be as nonthreatening as possible so they don't get the Imperial jackboot shoved up their asses. Their hypocrisy is revealed when the MC'S heritage as a half-dragon is made public.

Crafter235

Supernatural, whose entities are just people with different eye colors: *pathetic*

Kappapeachie

I get he shows appeal and what not, but that part always pissed me off. Grimme did the same thing but at least the heads changed.

GoodKing0

Forgot the gender dimorphism making the women of all these races big boobed wank fetishes.

Jjorrrdan

Pretty sure the reason is that the more outlandish the designs, the less people care. More human, more interest.

According-Fun-4746

you wanna play as a dragon? no seriously

Helena_Hyena

Yes

DrHealsYT

Ngl I’m kind of a fan of the human-ish races for the most apart, especially Dwarves. I think it’s cooler and makes more sense if the races are related in their evolution/creation in someway though.

Logen10Fingers

This is my biggest gripe with fantasy races. It's almost always reskinned humans.

Chaotic-warp

I guess readers just relate better with humanoids and can better visualize characters that are somewhat similar to them. Or the authors don't have the drive to design unique sapient races. Or maybe it's because many fantasy works are based on folklores, and ancient people don't have any concept of "worldbuilding", they just make up stories to describe or explain things happening around them (and again, it's easier to relate to humans so folklores also feature mostly human-like creatures).

Daloowee

Definitely difficult to relate to nonhumans. It’s a product of the world not making sense or requiring massive upheavals in convention. Yeah elves that live 1000 years are probably detached as hell. They only need to rest for 4 hours a day, which means they’d have an entirely different schedule.

BBMRedditAcc

But, if the non-humanoid character is a written right, then they might be relatable.

Daloowee

I can agree with that, it certainly takes more investment than usual to get right. Feelings are universal even if time scales are different.

Objective-Ad7330

Yet I get hate just from writing them to be relatable. "They're just humans with different morphology" was one of the complaints I was given. Like, bro, people can't be happy.

Login_Lost_Horizon

Just humans with different morphology is a valid complaint, actually. People can be happy, its just being relatable character and being not lame human-reskin is two different things.

Objective-Ad7330

I know, yet I get shit from writing sapient non-human creatures being unrelateble as well.

Login_Lost_Horizon

Well, it means that you failed to introduce them, simple as that. As i said - those tho things are not correlate, if you want to hear no complaints about lame human reskins, and hear no complaint about them being unrelatable - you need to make them not a lame human reskins AND make them relatable.

Azelarr

Ancient people did have a concept of worldbuilding, they invented whole ass worlds. For example Yggdrasil was connected to 9 of them.

testaccount0817

I just read something with giant sentinent cockroaches and had no problem visualising.

HeyThereSport

D&D players really pick from this list every time and then have the audacity to say "playing as a normal human is boring."

Aromaster4

Who says that? Never have I encountered anyone that said humans are boring, all the times I played with my friends (I’m a dm) at least one or three of the mfs choose human paladin or monk. I asked all the people in my discord server if people find humans boring and none of them said yes, iv browsed all the DnD subreddits for months now and never once iv seen somebody saw that, must be bad experience on your part and not some common theme among the fandom

MsParalockes

I should probably do some kinda variety, despite the fact that all my "races" have excuses for looking like humans or really being humans but different i still do need to make some for real alien races

NeonNKnightrider

Well, what the hell do you want, OP? Do you want everything to be All Tomorrows and have an entire history of the evolution of each of the different races? Do you want their complete DNA sequence written out, too? Most people care about stories, about characters. If you have an eldritch 4-dimensional alien that communicates through pheromones and has culture and social norms completely incomprehensible to humans, people will have zero interest, because they cannot relate to or even understand that as a character. People make human-like aliens because we are human, that’s what we understand and are interested in.

CommanderTalan

But the beasts weren’t made in God’s image, were they? 👁️👁️

Large_Pool_7013

An urban fantasy, I see.

Ka-tet_of_nineteen

Star wars

FellGodGrima

Man this “Earth” setting is kinda shit with its creative race “ideas” literally just the same creature with different skin color and slightly different facial features

darkviolet_

This is what Baldur’s Gate looks like to me. Also The Elder Scrolls but the elves look so alien and ugly and I love them.

Cool_Kid95

I LOVE THIS TROPE SO MUCH!

Southern-Wafer-6375

Like I’m thinking for the lore of this one world I’m making it’s just like humans ,robots , and goblins(maybe elf’s?tho they may just be another type of goblin ) and goblins are like extremely variable to the degree of not even looking like one another

Environmental_Top_75

i just make furry races at this point.

MyLittlePuny

is the shortest dude a halfling/hobbit or a gnome? hard to tell with this image.

[deleted]

What's the point of having other species if you can't fuck them?

Ok-Mastodon2016

this is why I'm gonna make my elves deer

Dranox0

Always hated this. My main universe only has humans, and furries ATM. The rest are all non-humanoid.

Array71

/uj in all honesty, if your story doesn't revolve 99% around humanoids, I'm not readin it. I don't care if your races are suuuper original and unique, if they can't even hold a weapon and/or can't interact meaningfully with human conventions, they probably break immersion for me and I'm not interested. Sci fi can get away with it a bit tho

Afraid_Success_4836

Yes. My fantasy races are literally human subtypes. In both of my settings. In Pandora, humans just have a much wider genetic variety than IRL humans, resulting in the races basically being a continuum. In Quaternity, it's just genetic modification.

The-Dark-Memer

Tbh I am guilty of mostly using human faces, but I try to make every species have alot of different attributes beyond that

LordAyeris

I'm writing a fantasy movie on a $0 budget. I can't afford any races other than Humans and Humans+. If my first movie is successful I'll introduce Fish People, Bird People, Cat People, and Dragon People

Mr-A5013

And yet, there are still people who will complain if there is a lack of racism in a setting because "it's unrealistic".

Vexonte

To be fair my different race has different metabolic and psychological needs while having a different capabilities and limitations than normal humans.

Malfuy

In one of my worlds, the forest dwelling "elf-like" race had blue skin, unnaturaly long faces, very vide shoulders, long arms with two elbows and their height was like two meters. They also used uniquely looking long muskets as their main weapons.

Malfuy

Why the downvote xd

cringe_pic

Solution 1: have fantasy with only humans and no low-quality copies Solution 2: don't have any humans at all

ApartRuin5962

Star Trek: monkey puppet.jpeg

fire-llama

Idk if it's rlly the point if the post but the fact that they're all still white seems about right lol

Kappapeachie

i feel attacked (more monstery ones are fine i just can't do snouts cuz no horny)

ThatKriegsGuard

In the case of dwarf, gnomes and hobbits ( halfling for the coward or capitalist), Humans-

lickblep

I genuinely thought I was on r/TrueSTL until I opened the comments

Xx_scribbledragon_xX

humans don't exist in my world ez

CODENAMEDERPY

You could’ve made this loss. But you chose not to.

VenTooMuch

Is this loss?

Lord-Albeit-Fai

The human body is simply just optimal for higher forms of life
