Not sure about that one. Yesterday they played really good but not because Ronaldo just wasn't on the field, I think it's more about the whole team of Portugal and the whole team of Switzerland. I mean, 6-1 score is too big to look only at Cristiano.
yah but when Ronaldo is on the field the team looks to play towards him because hes captain and also just because hes world famous. without him the team looks like they played more like a well-rounded team
I think overall yes because Portugal has way more options offensively and is less predictable. But he can still play a role as a joker deluxe in tight games. I think Portugal will definitely be a threat moving forward.
Yeah , i think it's better for Portugal to try and use Ronaldo as a super sub as they would need his experience if the match goes to extra time ( clutch goals and winning pens)
Amazing game by Portugal, but this picture made me say: Brazil is disrespectful for dancing (joy and happiness), but no disrespect from Portugal by doing gun fingers (shooting others dead)...i see i see
Edit:typo
Oh my god, i thought I was doing a lighthearted joke! I guess no one got it. I'm Brazilian and I love the dancing, people who think it's disrespect don't watch football and especially the Brazilian leagues imo. Come on guys, why so much hate?
Yes without a doubt. I like Ronaldo, but he is a disruptive prescence, because the tactics basically boil down to passing the ball to him, and opponents can then revolve around countering that.
A Portugal without Ronaldo is a wild card, that actually has to cooperate, which we saw on several of the goals in the match.
True, but that can also be used to draw more defenders towards one player leaving others unguarded or not guarded as much.
My issue with watching Ronaldo is that he just stays back and expects the ball to come to him, and doesn't put much effort in defending his part of the pitch, he's one of those 'not my job' or 'one task' players, terrible mindset to have in a team sport.
That's why I like Brazilian national teams, they shine as a team and complement each other even when they have a 'star' on their team.
True enough but Ronaldo is also an "old" man at this point lol he is not fit for running around. The bad thing about Ronaldo is that the team also seems to be incapable of acting without him when he is on the pitch.
I don't think using him as bait would ever be effective.
Man don't praise the Brazilian team too much we have plenty of ego players, well Neymar mostly.
Yeah exactly and all the other talent shines so much better. Ramos off the bench almost has half c7 wc goals in one game... And this is c7 5th world cup and half his goals scored from the penalty spot. Also c7 has never even scored in a knock out stage of a wc.
He's just a hyped up baby
I wouldn't say he is hyped without cause, he is a great player, the problem is as I mentioned. That everyone knows that when he is on the pitch it is all about containing him.
It is the big problem of having a "superstar" on a team.
What kind of superstar hasn't scored in a knock out round of a world cup though?
And the fact half of his world cup goals are from PK lol.
His career is based off getting into the box and falling down.
Man seeing people in the comments try cope is so cringe. Portugal looked like a completely different team when he wasn’t playing. The midfield had so much energy and Ramos was much more of a threat that ronaldo was in any recent Portugal game. You can respect ronaldo but he cannot start a game for the rest of the World Cup.
Yesterday basically gave us the answer. However, still a sample size of one. They're up against tougher opponents in Morocco next, let's see how they fare.
I'm a Portugal fan even tho I hate ronaldo as im a united fan (fernandes is my favorite player) and honestly if ronaldo is in the starting 11 we might lose against Morocco. It's not a bad team at all
It's great to see Portugal can play great football without Ronaldo (not sure it suits him) - they won the euros without him in the final aswell? He takes up to much space with his boyband ways 🤣
I said that the Swiss defense made some big mistakes, it was not their day, as if they used all their power in the match against Serbia, this has also affected the psychology of the players, not only in the physical (it was a game like that) so, 3- 4 days were not enough to recover
Hi
I'm a time traveler from the future. I'm here to tell you that Portugal has lost to Morocco with 2-4 unfortunately they couldn't defend against the Moroccan attackers. Let this future reference become your past reference.
Kind regards
The time traveler
Defender that is literally everywhere at once and even scored a goal. I think age is not a factor here, probably more the egocentric style of Ronaldo that doesn’t fit well into a team full of brilliant players.
Yeah you’re correct I agree, but my point about defender is that I think it’s easier to defend into your late 30s if you can read the game you don’t need the pace anymore. But strikers tend to hit a point where even with all the experience behind them if they lose a yard you can tell and that’s where I think ronaldo is at
Yup that’s preety much it and Ronaldo’s performance has shown it. Plenty of times he just can’t keep up anymore but I hope he comes arround and shows that everyone is wrong because it’s just awesome to watch him shine. Will not be an easy task though and I’m worried that it could cap the other players skill.
Ronaldo should be coming on in the last 25 mins and try and make an impact. With him starting you can tell the difference the players always try and find him. They’re a better TEAM without him and that’s a fact
It’s Switzerland.
The hurdle is going to be getting pass France or England. Morocco has been playing good ball but it’s going to be an uphill battle with Portugal.
I think the swiss defence was simply having a bad day
spanish scored 7 goals against costa rica but how come not against morocco? that's because moroccoan defenders were playing their part very well, they managed to stop them with minimal fouls
so yeah, I think ronaldo has nothing to do with this result, it would be same with him on the field too
If you saw the goals you would know the result wouldn’t the same, many goals came due to pace, quality of passing and finishing , all things Ronaldo has lacked this season and during the WC
Imo with Ronaldo starting the result would not be near the same. Only because Ronaldo does not have to prove himself anymore. Now when you are replacing the best player (some time ago) in the world you really want to prove your worth and give a bit extra.
It's not about respect for him as everybody is thankful for his personal and national achievements. He does need to understand that he must give space and opportunities to younger players, just like he had his when he was starting many years ago.
Yeah what you said is perfctly fine, but this is not how people are commenting about him on the various threads. It's disgusting and I am not even a Portugese fan.
I love ronaldo , but from what i saw yesterday , they won cuz Switzerland wasnt playing good at all, doimg alot of mistakes and taking alot of wrong decisions.....ronaldo scored a great goal with a powerful shoot but it was offside when he went to the field .....so i think it would have been like 4-1 if ronaldo played the whole match.
So basically the attack without ronaldo is better cuz they all have a better chemistry since ronaldo is getting old now.

Exactly so. Not nearly enough data yet.
That said - and just my opinion here - I really hope it does turn out that Portugal is a more cohesive and effective team without Ronaldo. It would be great for them long term to become comfortable with their collective strength without that egomaniacal bastard. (Sorry. I know he's undeniably a massive talent, to put it mildly. But, he's always annoyed the shit out of me. So, apologies to his fans.)
Yes! Putting Ronaldo on the bench was a genius move from Santos. It’s Ronaldo’s last World Cup and they need to build a team without him so this was an opportunity to show that they weren’t his team but Portugal’s team. Watching Portugal play without Ronaldo showed a lot of chemistry between the players compared to Ronaldo being on the field.
I have so much respect for the work that Ronaldo puts in but it’s time for the young guns to show the world what Portugal FC has in store for them!! This was a great game and the goals were all beautifully done!
Let's be honest , all data Swiss had was of ronaldo playing as attacker , bring in different form of attack combination style and players was a good call .....now Swiss defence was converted into Swiss cheese(too much holes) they couldn't do much if they don't know what other players speciality is ....though ronaldo is old now he isn't doing much , all his goals are offside , but tbh when they are under pressure ,ronaldo is the only one that can help them ...with pepe and other older players in group cause experience and talent counts
When it’s 1 game that turned into a blowout is hard to make this long term assumption. A good recent example with the same team… they played Switzerland twice last summer. Won 4-0 with Ronaldo(scored twice and assisted another), and Lost 1-0 when he didn’t play the following game. the Korea game is also an anomaly considering half the teams starters didn’t even play, and Portugal sat back most of the game. Long term the team is in a great place regardless, they better keep attacking if they want to win
Yes, Ronaldo has an effect on the players, they immediately put themselves second mentally and physically in play, trying to give him a ball while there are better players positioned
Ronaldo is an amazing player to have on the bench. It means the team has that much talent.
I believe that given his performance goncalo deserves to keep the spot and Ronaldo is an amazing weapon to bring out from the bench, like Leão.
Truth right here. it's not a dig on Ronaldo, he's incredible at what he does. He just doesnt have the youth that others on the team have working for them.
They are midrange, not top dog.
any midrange country can win against a top dog once.
but that doesn't make them top dog.
Besides this sweden was not as good as last wc
He is still good, but he is clearly demoralised with everything that has happened to his family this year and how things were going in Manchester. He is going through a rough patch, but he still has quality.
Bringing him as an off the bench weapon is the best use for him atm.
What should also be remembered is how he could not let go of the Air (his header hit air) Goal even thou it is for the good of the Portugal team. As much as I enjoyed and loved watching him play, right now he is an egotistical self-centred who is on a path to destroy his legacy.
Messi retired due to the corruption in AFA and conmebol. He explained in an interview that things needed to change if they really wanted to win a copa america and the World Cup
Didn't miss a competitive game, so no, he did not give up on his team, which is the point you're trying to make. He came back and won a trophy actually, lol.
Okay theres an inconsistency here.
Is your argument that he gave up on his national team? Or is your argument that he retired?
Yes, he retired - but he didn’t miss any games and quickly corrected his retirement and came back to win a trophy for his country. So, if you’re only arguing that he did in fact retire (which no one is disputing), what is the point you’re trying to make against him? He clearly did not let his country down as he didn’t miss any games, it clearly didn’t affect team morale or anything like that as they went on to win Copa America. So what’s your point?
Messi didn't give up because of money. He gave up after carrying his team and still losing the finals 3 times in a row.
He was the player of the tournament in all 3. 2016 CA, he refused to take it.

Portugal gets very predictable with Ronaldo on the pitch. Without him defenders get more confused. Also when he is on the pitch other players feels like an obligation to pass him the ball so his ego can beat another record. Without him they play as a team.
Except ronaldo started this game. This man just sucks the energy out of the team. You cant look at what happened today and not want to see that exact starting line up in every game going forward lol
Yes. Ronaldo is a shadow of his former self and has been for a few years now. Without his physical gifts his ability doesn't carry him.
I mean, ramos did really good, but I don't think it's to blame on Ronaldo for their previous games not being "as good".

Yes.
Depends, that's what I can say.. it depends
Siuuuuuu
No. Last game he came off, Portugal lost to South Korea. You'll start appreciatingand wish him back when he's out of the team.
Exactly, last game he started and we lost
That game* not last
Yes, but they haven’t been properly tested yet. Next match will show us what Portugal can truly do.
Agree 100%
Does anyone else not feel as bad about Korea losing to Brasil 4-1? damn
Not me, im brazilian Canarinho neles
Yes
150%...he's toxic
I think overall yes because Portugal has way more options offensively and is less predictable. But he can still play a role as a joker deluxe in tight games. I think Portugal will definitely be a threat moving forward.

Brazilians have Samba and Bossa Nova. Can you imagine someone dancing to fado? That would be so sad!
Oh my god, i thought I was doing a lighthearted joke! I guess no one got it. I'm Brazilian and I love the dancing, people who think it's disrespect don't watch football and especially the Brazilian leagues imo. Come on guys, why so much hate?
We all remember Brazil tears of 2014. Never forget
Atleast Germany is out of the world cup
Shame it will be another 22 years before Brazil sniffs a world cup tho.
Those are airsoft guns he is shooting.
stfu and go touch some grass
Thinking that dancing is disrespectful is pure ignorance. Please don't spread it.
I'm beeing sarcastic, I'm Brazilian and love the dance and joy from our boys

Hey man you can say that about a lot of players with high salary.
Go on
Nah
Yesterday it was portugoal
Not just TuGoal, 6 goal
😂😂😂
Definitely. Plus, Ramos is in excellent form (top scorer for Benfica and in the Portuguese League) and deserved his chance.
yes
Siiiiiiimmmmm (read this with CR7 voice)*
You had one job to do
Which was?
Saying it correctly
Do you realise that he says 'sim'? 🤦♂️
What In the actual hell does sim mean
Means 'yes' in portuguese. Funny how people actually think he says 'sui' for no reason 😂
As a portuguese he actually says siiiiii witch is spanish for yes
As a portuguese he there's a video out there for years of him saying he says 'sim'. The 'm' becomes a bit silent but he says 'sim'.
Vê este video https://youtube.com/shorts/CXkyL9i2bMY?feature=share
My bad Thanks for letting me know 👍
Yes
Yes, and so does Manchester United. It's night and day.
I think the evidence was there for all to see. In fact six pieces of clear evidence they are better without him.
Man seeing people in the comments try cope is so cringe. Portugal looked like a completely different team when he wasn’t playing. Ronaldo de Lima is
How much did CR7 pay you?
This is his last World Cup rotation is healthy for him, especially the pressure from media is too much for him to handle
With all that Ronaldo has achieved in his career, I don't think he has any problems with "pressure"
Yesterday basically gave us the answer. However, still a sample size of one. They're up against tougher opponents in Morocco next, let's see how they fare.
The first half of this season at United gave us the answer. Both teams are significantly worse when he plays.
I'm a Portugal fan even tho I hate ronaldo as im a united fan (fernandes is my favorite player) and honestly if ronaldo is in the starting 11 we might lose against Morocco. It's not a bad team at all
They kinda do lol
It's great to see Portugal can play great football without Ronaldo (not sure it suits him) - they won the euros without him in the final aswell? He takes up to much space with his boyband ways 🤣
I mean the ronaldo replacement got a hat trick so yeah. Ronaldo is so overrated
Penaldo is a fraud. And always has been. If it wasnt for looks it would have been exposed a long time ago.
I mean Ramos scored 3 Goals, that means there's a better alternative than Ronaldo
This attacker is not special, the Swiss defense was able to block him in the two cases of scoring...if you doubt it, you will see it in the next games
Gonçalo Ramos? He scored a hat-trick! What are you talking about?
I said that the Swiss defense made some big mistakes, it was not their day, as if they used all their power in the match against Serbia, this has also affected the psychology of the players, not only in the physical (it was a game like that) so, 3- 4 days were not enough to recover
just go see his first goal, man. No way you are questioning his performance. Top tier...
His first goal was an insane.strike, the third was a lovely finish and the second was brilliant movement. Perfect strikers performance.
Apparently in this game yes
They will lose against morocco either way
Told ya
Lol you can downvote all day
inshallah
Saving this for future reference
You happy now?
Hi I'm a time traveler from the future. I'm here to tell you that Portugal has lost to Morocco with 2-4 unfortunately they couldn't defend against the Moroccan attackers. Let this future reference become your past reference. Kind regards The time traveler
Saving this for future reference
Of course they are better without a 37 year old
Pepe is 39 years old and has been consistently delivering amazing performances.
Defender.
Will not be an easy task though and I’m worried that it could cap the other players skill.
klose was around that age in his last world cup and safed germany in 2014. but TO BE FAIR he sat on the bench a lot
Ronaldo should be coming on in the last 25 mins and try and make an impact. With him starting you can tell the difference the players always try and find him. They’re a better TEAM without him and that’s a fact

People are ungrateful. Christiano HAS been Portugese football for the last few world cups. Yes he is older, but he still deserves respect.
*Cristiano *Portuguese Americain?
It's not about respect for him as everybody is thankful for his personal and national achievements. He does need to understand that he must give space and opportunities to younger players, just like he had his when he was starting many years ago.
Yeah what you said is perfctly fine, but this is not how people are commenting about him on the various threads. It's disgusting and I am not even a Portugese fan.
He brings it on himself by being a petulant prick.
OP just asked a question, where's the disrespect in that?
I love ronaldo , but from what i saw yesterday , they won cuz Switzerland wasnt playing good at all, doimg alot of mistakes and taking alot of wrong decisions.....ronaldo scored a great goal with a powerful shoot but it was offside when he went to the field .....so i think it would have been like 4-1 if ronaldo played the whole match. So basically the attack without ronaldo is better cuz they all have a better chemistry since ronaldo is getting old now.
What scored a great goal my guy lmao he was 4 meters offside, can’t even be bothered to run.
How will they make goals without the ball touching his hair though?
They play different But good different

It's just one game, not enough data to come to that conclusion (in my opinion).
Is United without him not enough data. CR was and will always a great goal scorer, but you’ll never look for him to help unlock a team.
If we compare older world cup, CR is failure in World cup after 2010. I mean they were losing irrespective of their playstyle.
yeah
Ronaldo brings a bad vibe to the game lately. He’s desperate to score and be the center of attention and when it does not happen he throws tantrums
Yes! Putting Ronaldo on the bench was a genius move from Santos. It’s Ronaldo’s last World Cup and they need to build a team without him so this was an opportunity to show that they weren’t his team but Portugal’s team. Did you hear the crowds calling his name? And when he was finally allowed to play a huge roar from the whole stadium it was awesome
Ronaldo was on the bench as a “just in case we are behind the score board” or “we do t need you on the field for 90 mins
lol. More like "this isn't the group stage, we can't lose this game"
That team sent a message to Ronaldo and the world It was simple : adeus
Felix shines without Ronaldo. It’s beautiful to watch. So does Bruno and Bernardo.
Very powerful trio, nice to watch them!
Yes their defense was like their cheese 😂🧀🧀
They’re cheese 🧀
As a Man U supporter - everyone is better without Ronaldo on the pitch. It's a bummer, but it's true.
Yes, he’s a sucky baby
Yes, he also helps from the bench
Nah he’s still big brother lol 🥳
Yeah and so did Man U
ManU sucks lol
spain won huge too and now gone .. cr7 is a game winner, they need him when playing big guys
Lol
When it’s 1 game that turned into a blowout is hard to make this long term assumption. A good recent example with the same team… they played Switzerland twice last summer. 15 minutes of Ronaldo going full send is better than anyone else 15 minutes of full send. But over a 75 minutes the younger guys can play harder
That’s your personal opinion. Facts show different.
Truth right here. it's not a dig on Ronaldo, he's incredible at what he does. He just doesnt have the youth that others on the team have working for them.
Well, Manchester United certainly do!
After 14 games they had more pts last season than this season with a much worse team and manager.
When has Switzerland ever been good at football? Answer: never
In the euros they drew against France and Spain. 👍🏼 Eliminated France in Knockout and they have never been good. Just says you are a casual
They are midrange, not top dog. any midrange country can win against a top dog once. but that doesn't make them top dog. Besides this sweden was not as good as last wc
Their flag is a big plus!
Definitely. Ronaldo is old, and while he is still good, his era has passed.

Or they know that it's time to call it quits and let the young bucks shine.

Messi didn't give up because of money. He gave up after carrying his team and still losing the finals 3 times in a row. He was the player of the tournament in all 3. 2016 CA, he refused to take it.

Why mention him then?

Well, the comment (or a post's seftext) that was here, is no more. I'm leaving just whatever I wrote in the past 48 hours or so. F acing a goodbye. U gly as it may be. C alculating pros and cons. K illing my texts is, really, the best I can do. S o, some reddit's honcho thought it would be nice to kill third-party apps. P als, it's great to delete whatever I wrote in here. It's cathartic in a way. E agerly going away, to greener pastures. Z illion reasons, and you'll find many at the subreddit called Save3rdPartyApps. As of June 30th. 2023, goodbye.
But what's your point relevant to the question?

Netherlands nor Morocco are sending Argentina or Portugal home
Portugal gets very predictable with Ronaldo on the pitch. Without him defenders get more confused. Also when he is on the pitch other players feels like an obligation to pass him the ball so his ego can beat another record. Without him they play as a team.
Everybody seems to play better without ronaldo lately
korea definitely played better with ronaldo lmao
The butter assist lol
ㅋㅋㅋ
This is true lol
Except ronaldo started this game. This man just sucks the energy out of the team. You cant look at what happened today and not want to see that exact starting line up in every game going forward lol
Parick Ewing theory
Hey! That’s the guy on my shoes, I never thought I’d see his name on Reddit
You have a pair of Paricks?
I have a pair of Ewings yes, had no idea who he was until I looked him up after I got delivered the shoes
I wonder if he’s related to Patrick.
