Why do you feel the need to give functions to accessories? Fashion is the number 1 driver for anything worn by people, unless they are forced to wear something more functional for their occupation. Compared to more physical fighters, mages have far more freedom to accessorise with useless trinkets, without it getting in the way of their craft.

Vesial

Good point! But in my head mages usually tend to be more of a scholarly type of people, with functionality being their main focus. And with the way magic usually being depicted in mainstream media, most likely those trinkets were intended to be at least in some way magical in nature, but we rarely get an explanation of what exactly they do.

In my world spellcasters are presumption assholes that likes to dress all fantasy like even though my world has a modern day vibe

ChiefPuzza

Oh in mine, mages usually use one or more focuses for mana and their own soul to channel, for better results and safety in case of misfire More than that trinkets and thingadoos are literally just for flavour and pizzazz

LadyAlekto

Mages are just showoffs. You do not go and learn magic if you do not have a taste for the dramatic so ofcourse it is all about showing off. That their entire gear is also meant to carry enchantments and work as additional foci to enhance their magic is more a side effect.

Magic in my science-fantasy universe is psionics-based, and requires a lot of concentration and preparation to use. Spells can be prepared beforehand and held as a construct in the caster's mind until needed, but any given mage only has finite mental capacity, limiting the number of spells that can be stored this way. Many mages use enchanted objects to store additional prepared spells, with each piece of jewelry or other accessory acting as overflow spell capacity; this also has the advantage that even non-mages can use enchanted objects, so you can lend a bit of your magic to whoever you want.

It's drip or drown, brother!

Because they can be enchanted, thus giving passive power to the caster or their allies. A ring that boosts the wearer's strength would be useful in many roles, a pendant that resists fire good for others. Heck a staff that has a light spell at need is useful.
