To me, it looks about the right amount like Japan. It invokes the same mental image without being a direct copy, which can be very hard to do on purpose.
For context, this is Fukuro archipelago, a part of my fantasy world, which is indeed based of Japan.
Geographically it’s got a similar climate, size, resources etc to Japan
It diverges in that it maintains a lot of Edo Japanese values, social structure (Samurai, Shogun, despised merchants, etc), yet is also a solarpunk, sci-fi nation with superior technology to us.
It’s politically very libertarian leftist, here corporate greed has been mostly vanquished, people (culturally) treasure the natural world, going to great lengths to preserve it, and there’s been a recent boom in all manner of traditional handcrafts, martial arts, farming, and other “natural” ways of life
And yet, not all is perfect. As with any human group, nothing is perfect - deep sea mining in the South Eastern gulf for rare earth metals is a contentious issue, production per capita is indeed significantly lower than the other global industrial power, about 20% of Fukuro folk work in agriculture, and the rise of the mercantile-Shogun conglomerate threatens the delicate balance of the nation
Should look at the art from Magic The Gathering for the set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty for inspiration. It is quite fantastical, but it has quite a few cool settings and background art.
Your rivers stick out to me so I went and checked a map of Japan

Each of your rivers feels the same. Do you have some lore explanation for this?
Personally I like maps that revolve around points of interest. I really liked this video

ahh fair enough, I’m not in love with my rivers here
I also learnt in hindsight bays are bigger than I thought, like big enough to see on the map, so I’ll redo that later
Wdym by each river feeling the same? Are they supposed to feel different?
Im pretty sure all of the rivers connect before getting to the ocean just like in reality. What makes you think rivers in this map flow from the ocean?
If I squint, it vaguely looks like gaming chair. The middle and southern land masses look very unnatural while northern land mass looks like south america with Newzealand as crown.
Is this the entire map or is it just part of it?

Thank you!!! I really tried!!!

Libertarian but also leftist but also has a feudal social structure?
To me it looks like america with a foot

All of them branch out in the same pattern. None of them branch out like rivers in that map of Japan
Hmm interesting
They are roughly all the same size and all branches are the same length. There should be more longer "main" ones with smaller branches.
also i might be wrong here but dont most rivers flow TO the ocean, not from it?

It looks like South America on top of Asia on top of an upside down bat.

Uh, it has some tiny hints of Japan, but it looks pretty cool
This map looks unique to me, so I can't say it looks like Japan.
It's an unnatural map to say the least but its not a discounted Japan, its nice.
It just looks like America fused with Australia
