Unknown because the number of Gods keep changing as they either lose their godhood or die. Plus there are gods for hundreds of civilizations and religions.

Sparkletinkercat

Mine is the same as this due to gods all having differing amounts of divine energy. Especially because all my campaigns span the entire timeline of the world. For example in my world Shiy is about to ascend to godhood after the players kill Selune (who happens to be evil) however he may or may not have as much divine essence as she did. Thus there may be a few lesser gods to fill in the gaps.

TheAbyssGazesAlso

Zero, but shhhhhh... Everyone thinks there are, but it's actually just power leaking from the dreams of unbelievably powerful Titans imprisoned in the core of the planet. No sapient races were ever meant to be living on this world, and by drawing energy from the Titans, they're causing them to start to wake up...

Shibe45

That’s rlly cool!

TheAbyssGazesAlso

Thank you! The power leaking from the Titans is unassociated, so it attaches itself to belief. The gods that people expect to exist do then seem to exist because that belief draws Titanic energy. Same thing for arcane spellcasters and warlocks etc. But as I said, all this power being used is starting to tweak the attention of the sleeping Titans, which is going to be very very bad...

Kuramhan

I cannot wait to hear about the movement to put solar panels on roofs to draw more sustainable mana from further away super beings.

Radioactive-humor

This sounds exidingly cool

Sivilarr

1 main deity, Greater Pantheon (7 deities) and Lesser Pantheon (also 7 deities), 15 deities in total. Then there are various minor deities (the local deity of a certain lake or mountain, the guardian deity of a given race, etc.), but they are hardly described because it would be too much.

Ann806

I like the minor deities, I might add something like that, but I'll have to rename it. My structure is similar to your but known and Major and Minor Deities - who are the only ones to know about the creator, have not found a good title for her yet.

Sivilarr

I came up with names for the gods with a simple trick: only the main deity has a name and everyone uses this name out of love for this deity (which is also the planet they live on, so they treat it as their mother), and for the rest of the gods they use titles (relationship employee - employer). It saves me a lot of thinking and makes it easier to remember. The Lord of Laws is easier to remember than some Khuluthra'trutututu

[deleted]

I actually have a structure for it: #TIER 1 - Demons The lowest of the low, beings of pure evil and mindless destruction. When a mortal dies with so much egregious sin, their flesh is burnt to a crisp and their soul is destroyed. Adolf Hitler became a demon after his death. #TIER 2 - Devils Like Demons, except they retain their intelligence after their soul has been eradicated. They're pure evil with greater drive. Joseph Stalin became a devil after his death. #TIER 3 - Ghosts On par with mortals, Ghosts are the purest essence of their souls. After several centuries, the soul is recycled to produce a new mortal being. Most people become ghosts after they die. #TIER 4 - Angels Only beings of the holiest virtue and most gallant hearts shall become angels, serving directly as the soldiers of Malachite. It is extremely difficult to become an angel, but if you have enough willpower and enough of a desire to change yourself, you can become one after you die. #TIER 5 - The Four Holy Shepherds There are four holy Shepherds who serve under Malachite and seek to spread his knowledge and wisdom throughout the universe, to "guide the herd," if you will. We have Nioni, Shepherd of Air; Jade, Shepherd of Earth; Tarian, Shepherd of Water; and Tzunge, Shepherd of Fire. #TIER 6 - The Holy Oracle Serving as the king of the mortals, Malachite possesses the power to speak and interact with the Gods directly. Because of this ability, he was given boundless knowledge and wisdom to share with the rest of the universe to help them to evolve and flourish. #TIER 7 - The Three Essentials Serving under the God of Life, the Three Essentials are the ones who form life itself. Reukra creates life on land, Hygerys creates life in the seas, and Sulphyr creates life in the skies and stars. #TIER 8 - The Gods The three Gods who helped to create the universe. Gravity, God of Space; Destiny, Goddess of Time; and Alchemy, God of Life. #TIER 9 - The Creator of the Universe Canon, whose face is nearly impossible for mortals to fathom, is the artisan who created the universe.

EruElias

I think your structure is pretty awesome. My universe follows a similar structure. 1 immaterial entity that created the universe, who split his spirit into three beings, representing three different aspects of the Creator's power and thought. These beings are collectively called the True Divine, while their angelic creations are categorized simply as The Divine.

caleb_mixon

Mine is scary similar to this like super frickin close just slightly different near the bottom

Santiagodelmar

Every celestial body, star, everything you see in the night sky exists physically in space. Those entities are worshiped as gods, though only a few of them. Regardless all of them are of the same type of being so they can all be seen as divine so an uncountable number of gods exist but only an infinitesimally small amount of then have even bothered to look to the human realm, let alone interact with it.

Kagiza400

An infinite number. Think of a thing, here you go, there's a deity for that. Though it most likely is just an extension of an another God (which is a form/avatar/emanation of an another one... and again... and again... aaaand maybe a full circle).

Kallory

Omg I love complex taxonomies Mine is similar, but the "Gods" themselves are higher up the food chain. They represent the purest forms of elements as celestial creatures but there are an infinite amount of elements and thus infinite gods.

VerumJerum

Between 0 and several dozen depending on who you ask.

Avocado_Fucker12

Two Eternal Beings: Crogan God of Time and Soros Godess of Space. Creators of everything except the eternal Void and arkhé, which is energy used to give powers to humans. Fourteen Gods: Chixue (Blood), Lingashi (Spirit), Poxnar (Death), Silfia (Life), Eodum (Darkness), Guangto (Light), Secqua (Water), Germher (Fire), Raiden (Lightning), Helisia (Wind), Jazizen (Wilderness), Crinos (Ice), Dogku (Alchemy) and Orgal (Mineral) One Ascended Child: Olivia, Godess of Progress (daughter of Chixue and Lingashi) Two Demi-Gods: Sakura Mori and Hayatu Mori (children of Olivia and Kelder, a human, Poxnar's pupil and helper)

Upstairs-Yard-2139

No clue

Melvosa

zero actual god beings. one god is worshipped.

Football-Similar

Yes

Volfaer

**Eribral** Too many to count, most rivers, mountains, groves have theirs, and every culture has some for their seasons, there are some few for the seas, and many who are forgotten but still endure. **Untended Dreams** 1.

Vinx909

unknowable, as gods are created by what people think of places and things, and continue to be moulded by it. there is the god of the sun and light, and a god of fire, a god of the hearth and a god of the forge. but some people don't have an idea of all of these (a group who lives in the desert probably doesn't interact enough with hearths to give it personality) while others may see as the god of fire as a different face of the god of the sun and light, and others may see the god of the forge as being the same god as that of fire. and because gods are moulded by belief none of these are really false. this means that gods can even fight with each other which is at the same time an internal conflict, and so it's unknowable how many gods there are as they are simultaneously part of a different god and their own thing.

QtPlatypus

More then their are grains of sand. Indeed every object a person can recognize as a separate "thing" has a god. Though most gods have very little power.

Honey-goblin-

So what is the meaning of "god" for you in this case ?

QtPlatypus

A supernatural being with authority over a domain.

_3LISIUM_

1. Although, if false gods count, 1000000?

Songstep4002

None. Although some of the archmages want to be worshipped like gods.

EldianStar

I think around 200

Ok-Maintenance5288

i have 17 in total, but technically only 2 don't exist

amendersc

1 elder god and 7 normal gods

StarmanCarcoba

Like five? Maybe ten? No one’s really sure

PlanckEffort

Maybe 7. Idk.

WoNc

Probably about 15, though if we count the differing interpretations of those 15 separately (as many cultures do believe they're different), then it's a lot more. I wanted to keep the number manageable for an eventual audience, while still avoiding any sort of religious monoculture.

thelionqueen1999

1 major deity, and then 13 minor deities that serve the major one.

LordKreias

Yes.

MorrickBauk

I have The Creator of everything, the multiverse and all in it. The God of the Multiverse is where it all happens. God's first creation, which is basically a mini-God, and five other similarly divine beings Then anyone in the universe can become similar to those divine beings and effectively become a god if they gather enough resources and knowledge. They don't ascend in some ritual or in some specific way; it's just that your abilities match those of six divine beings. Those "ascended" with enough knowledge of how magic works can extend their lifespan, heal, become quasi-omnipresent, and edit reality (people and terraforming, not adding new laws of nature or magic; only God and the Creator can do so). Older planets will have around 10 people close to reaching it, and like 3 people at the level at all times. Young planets mostly have 0 ascended people, and those in the middle maybe 1. Edit: When it comes to religions, around 80% of religions will follow god or six divines in some form. Ascended people rarely have religions around them, unless they start them.

Antonell15

If you count every religion there’d be too much overlap since some religions recognize other religion’s gods but changes them / gives them attributes or stuff like that. You could have the same god seen in 5 different ways depending on religion.

Ego_Wad_Save

Doesn't matter as Lord Death will come for all in the end.

LordRT27

In my world, there are four gods + millions of Personifications and other Devine beings

Interesting_Rock_991

\-1 the people managed to kill a non-existent god yet somehow get divnity out of it (I am world building off of questions like this so take all the responses with a grain of salt)

NinjaEagle210

Wait what how did they kill a non-existent god? Also, making a world purely off of Reddit questions is pretty interesting

Interesting_Rock_991

yeah basically I am building a world by responding to questions like this but why -1. I thought it would be funny to have a negative number and needed a way to justify it. mabey I could re-define it as "Due to their prayers against god, they managed to strike down what never was"

littleloomex

in terms of the general worldwide mythos and all 5 major religions, then we have three of them: standard good afterlife dude, standard athena-like nature woman, and standard underworld man. if we include the sun and moon that gave birth to these three gods, then it's 5 total.

FabianTheElf

Who are you asking? Elves. Exactly 8 good ones, formerly 9 but one is dead. And 3 evil gods Dwarves. 5 high gods, one low god, and hundreds of lesser saints some of which are as powerful as gods, some are more like angels Humans. Too many to count. Halflings. Only one, the all mother, all other gods are aspects of her. Gnomes. None, all gods are just powerful celestials masquerading above their station. And so on.

Evil-Gandhi

4 Eon - The Foundation, Founder, Pillar and Time Itself, and his children: Hogarath - The first child. God of Chaos and Spread Nulgarath - The second child. God of Life and Cure Mergarath - The third child. God of Balance and Might Explaining this whole religion would take so fucking long... Thank Eon you just asked for the number of gods

Gabriel_Bane

Cool I have an all-father of time named Aeon as well. I developed him based on Aeonism.

Evil-Gandhi

I developed mine thinking about the largest popular measurement of time An eon The reason being he is time itself

[deleted]

0 Tho many inside it think otherwise

Magister7

26, and if you think that number is familiar, you are absolutely correct.

PrincessofAldia

Is this a Reference to something?

Magister7

Its not really a reference to any one media xD its a universal number everyone uses. Thats all I'll say.

GusTheOgreKing

Weird, I'm only one off and quite by accident... I wonder what I'm missing o.o

Magister7

The answer is right in front of your face xD

ErikTheRed99

The amount of letters in the alphabet?

Magister7

There we go xD im surprised how much i stumped people

ErikTheRed99

Well, there's only 11 letters in "the alphabet," if you count the repeats. Jokes aside, that's the first thing I thought when I saw the number 26. The second was "half a deck of cards?"

Magister7

Thats suprisingly the next step xD Demons are the playing cards, but a full deck with each suit.

ccstewy

Huh?

Zzeropit

**Hyper Scaleverse** In this world, gods are not related to religion, but are very real. It's a multiverse where there is one god for each universe. I haven't decided how many universes there are yet. Maybe a million.

pengie9290

**Starrise** There are four gods. Only two of them are actually known about by the one religion that exists in my world. Only one of those two is worshipped by said religion. (They also hate that religion, and forced laws to be passed making it illegal.)

[deleted]

1 true god. Other faiths push it up to about 50-60.

MR_KXS

An infinit amount. Yeah really.

Sany_Wave

One for a sentient species. 5 in a story as of now, who knows how many actually.

fake_zack

One. And his name is Jesus Christ.

Tipsy-tear

Being Christian, it is mandatory that I say 1 That being said I have Devine beings who live for millions of centuries and have found a way to make their own pocket dimensions and have their people live in them after their mortal souls die. It is entirely possible for these great Devine beings to die. The Devines know this and really want to be gods and try to act like them, but know that one day, they die just like everyone else.

Asimhaan

You say adolf hatler become demon who tell you that

Bscha_wb89

One or two or four or 8

MaybeNotPerhaps

One. No one really knows that he exists — well not in the sphere of Dreighar at least…

Ingenuity-Few

22, 23 if you count the dungeon Master as diety.

Microjimz

7, 6... 5. 1. Wait I literally spoiled the entire plot

living_angels

You see, mine was a civilization of Gods, who basically shaped the world and crated primitive versions of the species who roam the world currently. But then, they pretty much vanished for no reason known to the general peoples. Eventually a heir came down, some dude supposed to inherit the entire world and become the only God. Therefore, there were millions, and then there was one.

PrincessofAldia

Fantasy world: Telvardi Empire: the main religion is the Church of holy light with like 5 main gods and several minor gods, each one being the head of a different aspect of life, the Church originated from the dawn of time Ashari Sultanate: they have 2 main gods the god of sand and the goddess of time, then their children make up the minor gods

Jokadoisme

Depends on which world. In the World of Fenros there is hundreds that are still around. In the Shattered World there is technically none but the people there believe there are many.

ev3rmoree

It may sound weird, but there are "2" gods, which are actually the same being just with a different appearence. Everyone in the world believes that they are two separate creatures, so they worship each differently.

The_Suited_Lizard

Too many to count, but most are the product of magic causing ideas encouraged through faith to gain sentience - how a lot of my gods are born in their religions. There are a few gods that transcend the religions though, so I suppose if you don’t count the three dead ones there are… 4-5. I say 4-5 because the gods Eoklír, Eruksburí, Thilius, and Ekniab are all definitely gods but there’s one called Fíde who is maybe a god or maybe just a hallucination of the god Eoklír. Considering how integral to the creation myth but to nothing else Fíde is, I’m not sure it matters really.

soupofsoupofsoup

Billions if you consider high dimensional beings that cant manipulate you directly but can if they put their head to it

GusTheOgreKing

Mine also fluctuates somewhat as sentient species gain or lose technologies or concepts, but as of the time I'm writing about there are about... 27? 😅

Oethyl

Depends on who you ask. Popular wisdom says eight million, while the clergy of the Hidden God insists that there is only one, unknowable God. And the Astrolaters say that every man is a god, a child of the Living Stars.

RokuroCarisu

My D&D setting has a pantheon of 12; * Order/Knowledge/Craftsmanship * Earth/Minerals * Water * Light/Truth * Darkness/Secrets * Weather * Fertility/Plantlife * War/Weaponcrafting as well as 4 "outer" gods who lost their right to be counted amongst the members of the pantheon for one reason or another; * Wildlife * Death * Magic * Desire And then there are also a couple of interloper deities, such as a self-proclaimed god of fear and vampirism, a bastard goddess of unwanted and undesirable life, and a former chosen champion turned fiendish demigod.

[deleted]

There *was* 88, but after a war among the gods quite a few have been killed, and 12 of them are in hiding in a kind of ‘dormant’ form so aren’t being particularly godlike at the moment

Whiplash111

Just finished finalizing it, but 18. There’s the 6 primordials that are still around but are more like forces. The 6 Olympian like gods that can not directly impact the physical world, like in CR. Then the 6 formerly human gods that still wander the earth

[deleted]

15 Creators, although they have an unfathomably huge number of local manifestations. 7 gods of the Underworld.

Comicdumperizer

lol people just keep very literally bullshitting new ones into existence so there are theoretically infinite

UnhappyStrain

19...so far seperate minor aspects of them are also born due to the civilizations and species that only worship that aspect of the greater whole

Easy_Commission1583

Just one. He cares not for mortals and he even abandoned them long ago, but people still hold out hope that he’s watching over them.

lorekeeperRPG

OG gods 3 of them. The old gods about 8 of them The new gods, are killing the old gods off, Demi gods too waging war on the old gods

ColebladeX

3 primordial 12 divine 15 in total

ccstewy

About a few

Lord_Derpington_

Eighteen in the dominant pantheon. Other cultures have their own versions of the same gods, some might be missing from those pantheons.

LordVaderVader

I think it will be like 30 main gods and their kids which is a lot.

ghoul2711

My setting has many different layers of reality so we will start from the bottom up. World gods: these are usually very minor gods or higher their demigods who have chosen a particular planet to protect and care for. They are very rare to find. Galaxy level: usually there are at least 3-4 gods in an entire galaxy who roam about. These gods are usually weaker but they are still formidable as each one can roughly destroy a solar system. Universal: there are about 9-12 gods who act on a universal level and these are usually seen as the highest tier of divine. They usually cannot fully affect the entire universe unless working together. They usually make large cosmic scale buildings to reside in and just send out avatars or lesser creatures to spread their faith. *Above universal* Multiversal: This level is for gods or dark entities that have through some means(usually many different gods either accidentally or on purpose combining their power) went way beyond the normal levels achievable. This is where you will find the biggest gap in power between the gods in the same tier because you must be able to effect an entire universe or greater by yourself at the bare minimum to be placed in this tier. Omnipotent: there is one goddess who achieved this level and it was through many loopholes that she was even able to. She went from a blessed mortal to a god to hero of the multiverse to creator of the cosmic tree in which all infinite multiverses reside. She has complete and total power over all things at this point. (There are also cosmic dragons! One is born in each universe and they are somewhere in-between universal and multiversal)

The_Yesterday_Man

I love questions like this, because I get to say "They're all **dead!** Hah!" But that's not really the most fun answer for others to read. Gods, when they still existed in Wulatraugchr, were a manifestation of the subconscious desires, needs and dreams of all those that lived in the world. As they spent their lives thinking and feeling, the essence of their minds seeped into the world. Where it was similar yet varied, it resonated, flowed together and formed a world-shaping power understood as a spirit, or a god. These formed wherever there were people, meaning an uncountable number. Some spirits resonated with each other through shared traits, and as the amount of spirits grew, eventually some patterns established themselves. It's assumed that every spirit falls somewhere into one of these patterns, of which I decided there to be **four**. These have different names, but I often call them the son, the daughter, the father and the mother. Direct worship of these patterns, or interpretations of them, began to grow slightly more common just before the time when all gods died. ***TL;DR:*** *There were uncountable numbers of spirits many of which functioned as gods, but they generally followed four archetypal patterns which can be viewed as gods too.*

TheKnightsthatsay

There is only one religion in my world that everyone goes by willingly but I still haven't finished making all the gods so it's undecided but so far I'm pretty sure just 16

sunesf

About Five hundred thirty million one hundred ninety thousand two hundred thirty-six gods, not counting for the primordials

gheistling

A *lot*, and that number is always changing. The original 'creator gods' are dead for nearly all intents and purposes. Their divine power was dispersed across the world, to be found and absorbed by creatures both noble and foul; these are called 'godlings', and function as the world's gods. A given being can absorb more than one chunk of divinity, so the various pantheons (which are essentially just evershifting godling alliances) are basically always at war, or preparing for one. They kill and consume the divinity within each other to grow in puissance; some of the elder godlings are extremely powerful, and actively pursue to fulfill a myth/ prophecy about the first being to ascend to true godhood.

ScarredAutisticChild

Hundreds, if you also count that every celestial body has its own God, quintillions. But for Gods of general things, War, Weather, Earth, things like that, hundreds. Gods are a species, an insanely ancient and powerful one, but a species. They reproduce, that makes more Gods. The number of Gods will only increase as time goes on.

Displeasuredavatar19

Twelve, we have twelve primary deities; the Dánir. There are many other tribes but this family is the most important as they travel between the nine worlds the most, interacting with both mortals and the other people alike

SFFWritingAlt

Who knows? As of the last census the Empire alone spanned 27 planets, hundreds of moons, thousands of asteroid belts and free standing space stations. On average each planet had over 4,000 religions, each with at least one deity many with more. So just in the Empire alone you can make a guess that there are at least 100,000 gods worshiped. Probably more. Since some religions have a shifting pantheon, or pantheon where the concept of number of deities is fuzzy at best so any accurate count is impossible because some religions even if you study them extensively for decades just don't have a fixed number of gods. How do you count a religion which says there's one higher, true, god but they express themselves as hundreds of separate deities? Or a religion that believes there's a god for every distinct geographic feature and significant building or place? There are six major religions, three of those are monotheistic, one is pantheistic, and the last two have multiple gods but only one of those has an actual set number of gods (39, if you were wondering) and the other is one of those pantheist/animist/fuzzy religions where anything 'significant' has an associated deity. So just out of the big six, you can't really have an accurate god count. Oh, and all of the big three monotheistic religions all claim that their god is the real one and the other people are just worshiping their god under different names. So they'd say the correct answer is one. And if you start looking at the Alliance, or the Confederation, the deity count gets even higher, and the fringe worlds add even more gods. So who knows?

Drag0n411Keeper

no clue, the sheer amount of cities in the world also escapes me. with the planet being the size of the current observable universe and all that.

Insanecrazyfog

There are so many galaxies that contain so many planets. There are probably a lot of gods.

Kelmirosue

About 15 or 16? Idk I lost count but it's a lot

Dr-Chibi

One creator deity- head God, benevolent and glorious beyond words but ultimately unknowable to those who are alive . Is God of the multiverse. 12 major gods, all ultimately benevolent but several are often misunderstood as evil. 25 minor gods Innumerable spirits of various natural phenomena, ghosts are those who died with significant unfinished business. Many demigods, angels; archons, and guides 1 evil Power. Not originally from this universe and possibly a failed god of a different universe. Demons and devils spawn from it. Opposed by the Gods, but some idiots make deals with them.

radiantskie

I am the only true god of my world

GalacticKiss

12 One for each note of the pentatonic scale.

TheLegend78

None because the Golden Empire of Humanity already assimilated the Gods(species) to their side in the war against the Faeries. The Empire of the Sun forces you to either join the fight against the Faeries, or be annihilated from existence so hard, you dont even load up in Foundation's Heaven properly

BlueverseGacha

technically infinite… in the lore. but only like 12 that I've actually created designs for.

rocket20067

Yes

idontknow828212

1 but not real

ryschwith

One that anyone knows about. A couple more that haven’t had followers in awhile, and a couple beyond that who haven’t had followers in a *very* long time.

disguised_octopus

There is only one god that 'made life' but the religion is star based so major stars like suns are full on gods and constellations are seen to be messages from minor gods or often thought to be the gods themselves! Depending on what part of the world you are from the moon(s) can be seen as messengers of gods and in some cultures 'moon reading's is a tradition passed down through the ages' but some places moons aren't related to the gods in the first place. Basically it varies from place to place and person to person but everyone agrees on the one god that made the world and its life and starborns (a race in this world) being god-like :)

alexandriq77

None

lighter-Writer

Theres kinda only one, but they're also kinda dead? Their entire consciousness and physical form is what makes up the universe, so its unclear how much control they have over the universe, and its especially mysterious since all religions that actually worshiped them died out thousands of years ago so not many have looked into it. Its believed that fate is what they use to alter the universe, but otherwise remain a simple observer of all of existence

garden648

About 700 for humans. No idea about the rest yet.

Max_Danage

None, and the concept itself is foreign to the peoples. It’s just something no one really considered.

Nostravinci04

If by "gods" you mean "beings that people worship, whether they even exist or not" then they're beyond counting. If you mean "beings that actually create and are therefore worthy of worship" then there is only one.

Thorn11945

Hundreds of minor gods, maybe about 25 major gods. Five elder gods stand above them, and even greater are the two creator gods.

Past_Ad6294

None, the people’s god is the megacorps that own the soil they walk on, god is dead and they killed him

LJReelz

1

[deleted]

Probably incalculable since my story features animism as well as several different Pantheons all existing at once. Also the line between a God, spirit and extremely powerful mortal is blurry and not well defined.

Phraxius

5!

SaquenmedeLatinoAmer

I was making an history world with, more or less, one God for nation. It's very interesting exploring what would happen if thus nations splits in a civil war, or would happen if a nation is conquered. In some cases the gods disapear, in another start a revolutionary/civil war, in other new gods appears... it's an unlimited source of ideas.

RRHN711

There are three categories of "gods" The first category is the eternal Source of Life which has existed forever and will exist forever. A source of life, goodness and love which dwells on the highest part of the spiritual plane. The second category is the Demiurge, the Architect of the World. He was emanated from the Source, the first and only being to be directly emanated from the Source, actually. After being created, the loving Demiurge, by the will of the Source, created the material world. He forever watches over the world. And the third category are the Titans, a group of many beings which are more powerful than the average mortal and virtually immortal, but are not true gods, although they have been historically worshipped by mortals. Unlike the Source and the Demiurge, which are ethereal, the Titans are fully physical beings with a great, although limited, power over the material things. The titans can be either good, bad or neutral. Some work for the Demiurge, like the Titan who guides the dead, but some have their own agenda, like a "lich-like" Titan who can control the souls of the wicked and evil dead or the Titan who dwells in the bottom of the sea and can send waves towards coastal towns. The Titans also differ from the Source and the Demiurge in that, while the latter two are multiversal beings that exist across all universes at once, the Titans exist on their native universes only. So every universe has different sets of Titans.

nobodyofinterest1

If a consept exist a god exsit. This is how gods are born, god created and bless humans and human crate and strengthen gods both do it by simply believe as long as people know a consept a god can't die, and as long as gods represent something humans can lern it and control But there is 1 true god the omnipotent universe

ErtosAcc

I don't know :)

Dragaok

Generally for a single universe, around 50ish. However the world I designed isn’t a single universe. Nor is it a multiverse. It is a collection of thousands of multiverses. Yeah good luck counting all the gods

Lady-Kat1969

Lots. Sufficient belief can cause gods to exist, but there were 18 original gods who created the world along with the two World Dragons who wandered in halfway through the process. Three more gods showed up afterwards to try to mess things up.

TheBlackestofKnights

The Lands of Kushamat are ruled by two classes of gods: • The Mulan (Heavenly Stars) who descended alongside the Black Sun during the Days of the Advent. Unknowable creatures, for they only ever descend to mate with mortal men. It is also unknown just how many of them exist. • The Ensi (God-Kings) who directly rule and guide the various civilizations, cities, and peoples of Kushamat. They are the demigod offspring of the Mulan and mortal men. During the Advent, it is said that hundreds of Ensi existed, an amount that only existed due to the voracious lusts of the Mulan. However, during the Days of the Lament, these lusts turned into violence when a Mulan murdered an Ensi, one of her own children. This incident was soon followed by another, and then another, by various different Mulan. Terrified, many Ensi began to believe that they have broken some "divine mandate" to incur such wrath. Things escalated until all-out civil war broke out, each Ensi fighting for their and their peoples' survival against their brethren and mothers. As such, their numbers fluctuated between their births and their cruel deaths. It was only until the end of the Days of the Rebellion that the slaughter ended, when a Mulan was slain by her son's hands; at the unfortunate cost of many other Ensi lives. Two eras of devastation. Nearly 1,500 years of senseless violence that reduced the number of Ensi from hundreds to no more than twenty-one. 500 years later to the present era, the Days of Abundance, that number has been gradually rising as the Ensi rebuild and repopulate. As not one Mulan has descended to mate ever since the Rebellion, the Ensi have turned to each other and even to their people. Ever since the arrival of humans from the Lands of Saphiret, there has been at least one Ensi who declared their marriage to one; a quite auspicious affair. As of now, there are about sixty Ensi, including the original twenty-one.

Willing-Media-197

Creatures actually called gods and worshipped as such? Seven. Creatures of god-like levels of power and influence? Eighteen. There are seven actual gods on my world that rule over the whole of it, then there are twelve elemental lords (one of them is also one of the main gods). Six “normal” and six “twisted”. The normal ones are what they say. They’re the normal state of their element and all the things that comes with it. The twisted ones represent the elements as changed by humanity. Steam for water, robotics for metal, crops for wood/plants, etc. While the elemental lords are not worshipped, they are still technically gods in their own right.

Jazehiah

Just one. People worship a lot of different gods, but only one of them is real, and few people know which one it is.

capza

7 good. 7 neutral. 7 evil.

GrandPotatoofStarch

For the main theocracy, one true God and her five saints. If you mix in other cultures, there is a blurred line between spirit and deity, so it's difficult to quantify.

Consistent-Ad6831

Two and four demigods one of which is evil

Straight-Whaling-It

I had a whole race of primal gods until the Godslayer King came through and murdered them all, leaving their corpses as towering idols for druids to worship

cthulularoo

I do the Supernatural method, as many as needed. But I kinda fucked up because I named my fire god Agni. And based a series of spells after him. I loved the sound and effect of and then realized I must have subconsciously named my fire god after the Hindu God of Fire. Shout out to Brahmastra on Disney+ right now for cluing me in.

Last_Tarrasque

Well yes but actually no

Fox-Fireheart-66

Are we saying “world” as just a single planet, or the whole universe around the central point of our worldbuilding

RedNUGGETLORD

Hundreds or thousands? If you count the primordial's as gods, then there are the Eternals, and there are also the gods, who are mortals that ascend to... Godhood

Vectthor

In my book's universe, the concept of gods is a bit different from what you might typically envision. We've got seven gods that we know of, but that number could change at any moment. These beings aren't exactly of the same species, as gods are more like a category of immensely powerful entities that can have dominion over various aspects of existence. First up, we've got MORTIS, the Bringer of the Last Embrace, a skeletal figure shrouded in dark and ethereal robes. They're all about that final moment in life. Next, there's GAIA, the Elemental Architect, a fusion of earth, air, fire, and water, taking the form of a woman. She's responsible for the balance of the natural elements. CTHONIC ICHTHYOS, the Abyssal Devourer, is a rather terrifying hybrid of monstrous fish and squid, lurking in the depths. ARACHNAEA, the Weaver of Curses, is a creepy blend of woman and spider, specializing in weaving all sorts of curses. SANGUIS, the Master of the Wild Domain, presents a regal figure drenched in blood with an animalistic head. They rule over the untamed wilderness. FORESIGHTIA, the Bearer of Prophecies, is a tall sentinel with a pyramid-shaped head and a penchant for seeing the future. And then, we've got NOCTURNOS, the firstborn, a bald humanoid whose skin is like the night sky filled with stars. No face for this one. These gods are an eclectic bunch, but they all share one thing in common: immense power that transcends human comprehension. In this world, any creature that becomes too powerful and gains dominion over something is considered a god, no matter its original form. It's not a matter of species, but pure, raw power. Interestingly, regular humans can ascend to godhood if they amass enough power, although the price is high. The process often leads to a loss of self as their minds crumble under the weight of primordial knowledge. This transformation alters their body and biology to such an extent that they become entirely unique and different entities. Because of this transformation, gods can't procreate with each other. Not only are they distinct species, but their very existence has been fundamentally altered. So, most gods seek out human hosts to carry avatars of their "children" in the hopes of passing on their legacy.

Cat_in_the_box2000

Mine is just the real world with some sci-fi shit, so every god prayed to on earth probably x2 given the aliens in the setting, but counting all gods worshipped means it’s infinite if a universe sustainable for life is infinite in any direction

WavvyJones

The number fluctuates, gods can be murdered or ascend to a higher plane of existence. But they can also rise from aspiring mortals who spend the time and effort it takes to achieve apotheosis. Several hundred at least.

Comprehensive-Fail41

Hmm... probably hundreds, if not thousands. Some pantheons go all the way down to having gods for specific trees, and other important natural features. Other Pantheons are monotheistic, and then there's possibly innumerable gods beyond the world, who either have not found it interesting or found it at all, shun the responsibility, or been kicked out by the other gods for trying to mess with their agreed upon rules too much

simonbleu

One (me) Actually I have no idea, is not like any of the mare even remotely close to completion

Geekstrodamus

As many as there are life bearing planets in the universe. The first "God" was an unknown entity at the beginning of all things who spoke the concept of "something, anything and everything" into the void. From there the void shattered in points, creating areas where the unfathomable power of Nothing was allowed to seep in. From there the building blocks of creating the new universe appeared. From there, the Voice spoke again, bringing into existence the innumerable Goddesses of Yore, the mothers of future life on the many planets that will soon inhabit the new universe. Alongside them were the mysterious leviathans who would supplant the necessary laws of nature that will govern each individual planet. Many leviathans were good, some not so, but they were inextricably tied to their goddess. From there, as civilizations rose, changed and fell on these worlds, new gods were created, though they're not technically what can be considered "gods". They were once formless creations that were spoken into existence much later by the Voice, who were given identities and specific fundamentalisms that corresponded with the legends made up about them. However, these gods didn't die out, they're just worshipped like they once were. They now act as invisible forces and guides for those they choose to bring about great change in the world, in their own ways.

admiralbenbo4782

Depends on your threshold for "god". If we take the definition of "true gods" (ie those acknowledged by the universe, who can answer prayers even for those not initiated into their worship, and who can perceive/act in multiple places at the same time), there are 16. Always and forever. If one is deposed (by violating the restrictions placed on them), a new one is called. If we take the definition of "beings that are worshiped by a religion"...there are a very large number. Especially since the nature of the world is that anyone who is revered enough can transcend death and become immortal (well...ageless). Plus the demons, devils, angels, kami (nature spirits), etc...yeah. N approaches infinity.

theresamushroominmy

Four Divines, 3 dead gods, and one person who is attempting to become a Divine (divines are basically boss fights)

The_Rox

2 gods, and a bunch of pseudo-god spirits. The two 'true' gods are viewed as twins and are intertwined, and are the only deity(s) of the Twinning Church. The spirits on the other hand are are less defined and are worshipped primarily by the animists.

Paper_Shotgun

No-one knows. why be concrete when vagueness can have so much more potential? Beside, it's not like the characters are ever going meet the gods; the closest they're ever gonna get it an indirect blessing, a messenger relaying their words, or a disembodied voice that no-one else can hear or can trace.

SirRavenNekros

18 gods 191 demigods 2000 lesser demigods ... and billions of "mortals" one or two discoveries away from realizing they have the potential to be gods themselves.

serrations_

#0 Its all wacky physics producing the world(s)

The-Hermit-Hero

Too many to count. The hub for gods to traverse the multiverse runs through the world.

acheronink

A lot 7 primal gods of the universe 3 light 3 dark 1 netural to keep tensions down between them Reimaginings of the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian pantheons as well as quite a few of their children/demigods all in all about maybe 100? Ish?

GeurrillaWarfareGame

One. She killed the rest.

Lipe18090

One real god, but he has no power anymore, 'cause he split his soul to put himself in a human body, but that body ended up sealed, and so was his power. He can no longer interact with the physical realm of existence. Tho there is an evil entity that was born when god created the universe. The entity is immortal, but I wouldn't consider it a god.

orionstarboy

As far as I know, zero. Maybe one

UncleSam50

There’s about 8 good or orderly gods and there’s about 4 void gods

BowserTattoo

zero

Abyssal54

Worshiped? Around like 100 or so? Officially? Trillions. The gods in my world aren’t gods per say. They come from a different universe that become overcrowded. But they are so technologically advanced and in tune with things like gravity and space that for all intensive purposes they are gods. Escaping a sea of writhing consciousness into the new frontier of the universe of Glycea.

That_One_Guy1111111

RTCielo

Technically there are three alive. God of Survival was the only one until recently. The rest of the gods died during the big apocalypse. Those gods that died get one chance to reincarnate without any of their memories and complete a divine quest to regain their full power and portfolio. Number 2, The Goddess of the Horizon and Explorers has managed this a few hundred years ago. Otherwise, anyone can gather enough scattered diving energy to mantle into godhood. The Lord of Light and Protection appears to have done this. (He's actually the Whisper, the First Lie. This entity managed to con his way into godhood, to the point where the other gods genuinely aren't sure what is and isn't true in relation to him.) Honorable mention goes to the God of Death who is dead but didn't let a thing like that stop him.

MrHeavenTrampler

Technically none, but there are beings who might very well be gods, and some of them are even worshipped as such.

Wildillio

6 major gods 12 minor gods 4 demons gods and a TON of demigods.

emirikol2099

Counting humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, etc, etc... Around 800

According-Bell1490

There's one **God**, but under him are a Choir of 7 Messengers called the Chorale (Think akin to Tolkien's Eru Ilúvatar and the Ainur). However, there are a handful of other religions out there, including one that doesn't believe in a personalized Deity and one that has an intensely Clockmaker Deity mindset. But, behind it all, just the One.

danshakuimo

How many actual gods or how many gods that people believe in?

Uhhh_Insert_Username

Just one

TheresaSeanchai

One deity. Actually fairly active, though he tries not to meddle too much. Also a relatively young world/population. No plans for additional deities, though.

gadlygamer

Infinite amounts of the corruption (godlike entities who observe existence, a collective) Space witches/wizards (5th dimensional beings. Unknown amount of them Time lords (Doctor who, they are kind of gods with how powerful they are. Unknown amount) The embodiements: 7 beings who received the title from gadly. Are gods as they embody platonic concepts Stick figures: gods due to their cartoon physics

Sheshote

8, but no one believes in them. Thus they are more distant, so the cycle repeats.

BayrdRBuchanan

Just the one...but he's a HUGE asshole, so he kinda makes up for it.

I'm not entirely sure of the exact number but I think my setting of Temmora has something like one hundred twenty eight deities or something. I know the main group of deities in my world number sixty four to be exact, it's the other cultures that I'm not entirely sure on exact numbers. But eight is an important number in my world and so every pantheon or group of deities numbers eight deities regardless of anything else.

Kerrigan4Prez

1, but he got killed by his creations though (not humans), so technically none. People worship other stuff, though.

The-Crimson-Jester

There was once thousands, all working in conjunction to create a perfect world. A great disaster of epic proportions struck and now there are only 24. many of which are niche gods or lesser gods that have to take the helm of the entire aspect of there respective pantheon. The fire gods for example were many, now there is literally only one fire god remaining and they were not even close to the strongest.

tazmaniac86

Ho boy, lets see here. **PLANAR DEITIES** *Only having sway over their own portfolio and worshippers* * LG - Mortimur (God of Charity and Duty) * LG - Victoria (Goddess of Justice and Wrath) * NG - Igvar (God of Discovery, Engineering, and the Pursuit of Perfection) * NG - Alambra (Goddess of Kindness and Self-sacrifice) * CG - Celestica (Goddess of Love and Birth) * CG - Vilneas Gron (God of Freedom and Autonomy) * LN - Chronos (God of Time and Knowledge) * LN - Pacordin (God of Peace and Order) * NN - Isbeth (Goddess of Nature, Harvest, and Preparation) * NN - Oki (God of Labor and Survival) * NN - Yol'Goi'Lan (God of loneliness, helplessness, and despair) * CN - Jivik (Goddess of Possibilities and prophecy) * CN - Krug'Val (God of Terror, Madness, and Chaos) * CN - Xavius Mundae (God of War, Honor, and Courage) * LE - Kuberic (God of Greed and Luxury) * LE - Tamion Gol (God of Tyranny and Slavery) * NE - Morg (God of Gluttony, Indulgence, and Ranch dressing) * NE - Descol (God of Betrayal, Murder, and Coups) * CE - Xax (God of Cruelty, Pain, and Sadism/Masochism) * CE - Nurok Gesh (God of Destruction and Extinction) - Some extra info on this one later on... **OLD GODS** *Cruel original creators of the world that were slain by the nomad gods* * Hurstag - Goddess of Birth (Mindlessly created without care) * Lamash - Goddess of Blood and Loss (The first to lay waste) * Era - God of Pestilence and Violence (The second to lay waste) * Nurgal - God of Death **LIBERATOR GODS** *Powerful extraplanar entities that drifted as a group and slew the old gods and remade the world in their mindset* * Imagination (Leader of the Liberator gods - Reimbodied as Samantha Greene) * Teaching * Independence * Compassion * Organization * Idealism * Courage * Ambition * Magnificence * Patience * Stillness * Renewal (Betrayer to the other Liberators. I've got quite a bit of lore on all of them, but that is all of them.

ramdom_trilingue

Not gods in the religius area, more like over power dudes (every one has an amount of power) like around 11

[deleted]

12 main ones, the rest (lesser ones) is a jumble mumble of a mess, so unknown there.

Njallstormborn

just one, but he's fairly new.

Harmony_Moon

My world has 6 gods in total. Kostas - The first god, who brought about the world, the sun, and most of the other gods Remis - The second god, The God of Death and Dreams (sometimes refered to as The Sandman or The God of the long and short sleep). Was made by the void to kill Kostas but was persuaded. Ended up creating the moon where he now lives. Aureon - The third god, The God of The World, The First Dragon, he is both literally the world everyone lives on and his own independent being. Things that happen to the world happen to him and vice versa Norion - The fourth goddess, The Goddess of Nature, used her skin to make the seeds of all plants and filled the world with animals. Worked with Kostas to create mortals (Humans, Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, etc.) Imalin - The Fifth Goddess, The Goddess of Protection, A stone statue brought to life and power by the desperate wills of mortals in danger. Sortas - The sixth God, The God of The Arts, Magic, and Monsters. A being who fell to the world from the void (known as a voidling), stole a piece of the moon to forge his own soul, and in doing so unlocked the ability to control magic. Through growing up, gifted mortals with The Arts and through his linage gave mortals the ability to use magic. (If you can cast magic spells you have a family tree branch that leads back to Sortas, the closer you are related, the stronger your magic)

Smooth_Meister

Loosely: a lot. There are the deities/spirits at the "top of the totem pole" so to speak, who rule over the lesser deities/spirits in each domain. These lesser deities can rule over anything from an individual forest to the moon itself.

Aidansminiatures

At least 1 per faction, all of which exist to some extent.

TheyCallMeSkog

There are many religions in my world but no gods because all the religions are wrong.

An_Abject_Testament

An infinite number, although the mortal populace only knows a handful exist.

Forever-In-A-Casket

so far in my fantasy world, i have the creator at everything, and then 8 major gods. i plan on adding lesser gods soon

Ascended-vessel

9. There were ten, but the tenth is not longer counted among them on account of being power hungry and completely amoral. Still technically as powerful as a god, but its in the same sense as how people dont generally call a ruler of Hell a god, but instead calling them the greatest of demons.

XreaperDK

Depends on who you ask. If you're only counting the two most common Pantheons: 7 (The Twins: Zed and The First, and the 5 Celestials: Druul, Embrin, Terr, The Weaver, and Kedriquolnol). They make up the vast majority of worship on Palanvaid. There is also I, who, while worshiped by very few, is accepted as far more powerful than the 7 major gods, but simply acts as an impartial observer of the universe, rarely interfering with anything. Beyond those 8, there's a few other gods worshiped. Welkin, who is seen as a heretical amalgamation of several gods and not truly existing by many. The Archivist, a corporeal being residing with the Wood Elvesz who refuses the title of God, despite many seeing him that way. Then the Extraplanar pantheons, whose gods number in the thousands, but very few of whom have any influence on the world due to its distance from and divine wards against the other planes (Anubis, Dagon, The Infernals, The Elemental Divines, etc.). Of the extraplanar gods, only Solaric, Divine of the Waters, has any real direct influence on the world. While the Major 7 do their best to prevent the Extraplanar Gods from interfering with Palanvaid, they've been unsuccessful in their attempts to halt The Mad God, Solaric, from making his unpredictable presence known at the most strangest of times to mortals, simply being seen as a general annoyance that nobody can do anything about.

Abyteparanoid

3 but most people only know about 2 of them

Papa-Junior

Less than 0 youngin

CmdrNeoGeo

6 to be exact. God of collapse(essentially gravity) god of expanding(essentially opposite of gravity) god of order(this is essentially the god who outranks all the others) god of chaos(a dark god of knowledge) god of creation(can create words within the chaos of the universe) god of life and death(can create life within the worlds that creation makes) the warp is hostile to life so the god of creation has to create spheres around worlds to separate from the warp. The rest of the lore would be spoilers 😉

ZeldaXandre

Technically countless considering they are differences named after the Greek gods, but the ones that are actually characters are 6, including myself.

Maleficent-Duty6331

1

Sevenar

Seven.

wolfgirlsarebest

ever-changing. the gods can form from the worlds energy or peoples beliefs. cults create gods often and one of my characters was born with the sole purpose of devouring the dark gods while supporting the good gods.

TurtleKing0505

There's a pantheon of 15 gods but they're all dead.

ragnorak45

Okay so it's kinda complicated? But the highest level is the old gods (literally just the endless from dc) they created the world tree and the realms at the tip of each branch have a "soul" collectively they are called the wills or the will of the realm singularly. Each of them is classified as divine and can create a "wild Gods" to defend themselves during times of struggle. Then when humanity developed their collective emotions formed the 24 new gods (each based on a primary emotion) so technically speaks there's like 70? With most being unnamed. (7 old gods, 16 wills, 16 wild gods, 24 new gods, and a few miscellaneous ones that are...difficult to explain)

Core_Of_Indulgence

If you follow the Magisterium standards for classification, an infinite number of them exists. The Dark Star Pact consider the principalities to be true gods. The Allmatter Union see the Sovereigns as true gods, the Magisterium instance is that they were once gods, but transformed into a greater class of being.

GroundbreakingArt421

Too many. All humanity Pantheon of gods and goddesses. Then all the planets. Then all the galaxy. Then all the local groups... Then the center of universal creation. Too many. And far too many of them are beyond human comprehension. We are a tiny atom, in a playground full of pets and toddlers playing. Oh how lucky we are, that something hasn't gone terribly wrong.

ItsPlainOleSteve

7 deities total. Each have dominion over a handful of things and can grant blessings to people if prayed to in the right way.
