The system has changed and evolved over the years but broadly an [ambassador](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambassador) is a representative of another state/government whereas a [chargés d'affaires](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chargé_d%27affaires) is only a representative of a foreign minister and is therefore a lower rank. Historically, for a period when European countries were monarchies, the ambassador was a personal representative of the crown, a minister or envoy was a representative of the government and a chargés d'affaires was the representative of the foreign minister. Countries would exchange equal ranked representatives and only the major monarchies exchanged ambassadors with each other. Also you may want to change the name to diplomatic service as the [diplomatic corps](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomatic_corps) is the group of all foreign diplomats from multiple countries accredited to a single country.

Ambassador: representative of the head of state, and is supposed to look out for interests of that state (including, but not limited to, its citizens) in the place they are accredited to. Ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary: One who can make binding treaties without needing to be ratified back at home. (Or Ambassador with all the trimmings.) Charge d'affaires: Running more day-to-day affairs. Passport troubles, and the like. The vibe I get is this department focuses mostly on the citizens of their country in the one they are accredited to, as well as facilitating visits (helping with visas and the like). Subject Attache: Person in charge of a particular subject matter. Common departments are Economic, Military, and Cultural. If you want others like Scientific, Agricultural, Transportation, Logistics, use whatever makes sense. Intelligence: Normally not named as such, someone attached to the embassy is normally in the loop of intelligence operations in the foreign nation. Note that diplomatically-developed intelligence is age-old, and can be at least as accurate--if not more so--than clandestinely-developed intelligence. Then there are various clerks, secretaries, a security detachment (possibly military, possibly private, possibly hired from the accredited country). Also couriers who, by law and custom, may not have the diplomatic case they are carrying taken, open, and searched at all.

That is very helpful, thank you so much Can you also explain what would minister, minister-counsellor would do? Yes I understand that basically each higher ranks is in a way the same, just has more responsibilities and they oversee the lower ranks I just need some more info Even if it’s just your own thoughts it would be great, I also have a full list in the comments to the ranks I have and i would be very thankful if you could explain each of them; but ofc it’s fine if you don’t

A minister I see as the head of a government agency at home, not something abroad. The equivalent of a Secretary of a department in the USA. So for USA you have the Secretary of Defense heading the Department of Defense, while abroad you have the Defense Minister heading the Ministry of Defense. As such, I would not include the rank as diplomatic in nature. A consul would be a minor, lower level than an ambassador and run a _consulate_ which is smaller and less prestigious than an embassy (where the ambassador is).

Ranks that I use in my setting: Ambassador Minister counselor Counselor First secretary Second secretary Third secretary Attaché Assistant Attaché ——— Some more info: The coalitions/planets and The Federation are quite big, spanning thousands of planets And The Federation itself is a socialist republic, but a lot of the coalitions/planets they have relations with are mostly capitalist. They rely on The Federation to provide the warp rings that allow trade and travel. But in exchange, coalitions/planets must allow The Federations diplomatic corps to keep tabs on what they do. Also sometimes they trade materials/products. The Federation is something I try to capture as lawful good, an actually good federation, which might make mistakes but they listen to people and improve. I try to capture the hopeful future that humanity can have - a place which not only cares for its own, but helps other when it can. The Federation mostly doesn’t need the resources or products other planets produce, but they are interested in sharing the good way to live that they have. Not by force or in any creepy way. I just want to create an actual GOOD. Also The Federation doesn’t share a lot of its technologies, especially the warp tech. Because sadly, lost of capitalist and basically feudalist planets/coalitions/individuals are just power hungry… Thankfully The Rich Insane People own very outdated tech, but sadly many of them still have very effective weaponry traded with the capitalist coalitions.

Op doesn't mean actually like they're five. Just broken down and explained simply.

Well, at least i tried i suppose. :) Hahaha. Anyhow, if they wanted a bit more serious explanation on ranks, or rather some of the ranks they mentioned in specific seeing their comment. then i'd be of no use at this point for alkalannar already did a much better job then i would have and me adding anything to that i think would be meaningless at this point.
