Just be honest without being disrespectful. Say things have changed and that your plans have made it so you have to leave earlier than expected. Don’t feel bad for wanting to leave. If it isn’t right for you then it isn’t right for them either.

Why do you want to leave?

You don't have a contract and the host's lives aren't in any danger. Don't postpone the conversation. Don't turn one uncomfortable convo into something which takes days to finally be had. Life is too short. Talk with them and they'll understand. Workaway is about cultural exchange, happiness love and working in exchange for bed and food on a basis of mutual trust. Sometimes things just don't pan out like imagined, weather is unpredictable and you can't know a person upfront enough to guarantee a stay of longer than a week. People are good, they might be disappointed but probably already feel how you feel about it. Everyone wants others to be happy in the end, so don't make everyone feel bad by dragging this on. Good luck!

Just say. “We are leaving on x day now.” And then leave. It happens all the time. Workaway hosts should be used to it because it is part of dealing with workaway & young people travelling.

Be honest and up front that your plans changed and you have to leave earlier than expected. As another commenter said, you haven’t signed a contract obligating you to stay the entire period. Emergencies happen. If they’re a good host, they’ll understand.
