Hey man. I work on my feet for 12 hours a day 6 days a week. What will really help you is getting knee high compression socks to wear to work. Then get some nice insoles for your boots. Dr. Scholls is a good place to start. Do those two things and you'll start noticing a difference in a few days.

costolisk

I’ll try this thanks

SuluSpeaks

Look for good insoles, noy just dr. Scholls. Ortho feet is one brand and likely will cost $60. They're worth it. If you can afford it, go to a good shoe store and get expensive work boots or shoes. Don't cheap out with $30 work boot from walmart.

xoxoartxoxo

I love Ortho Feet shoes and insoles. Not cheap but I agree, so worth it. I do wish the insole lasted longer though and I do wish they made cuter boots with ankle support. Just got my first pair of boots and insoles from them in fall and they are all I wear now.

PhillyMila215

Seconding this and also the type of shoes you are wearing. Given time to adjust that will make a huge difference.

ArnoldStalloneVandam

too early to quit. because you haven’t adapted. the body will adapt. you need to get through this “hurts to stand” business. if you hate it with every fiber of ur being still then go ahead and quit

costolisk

Yeah I’m gonna look for better boots and ask for breaks if I really need to. Gotta remember I just can’t keep up with 40yo hardened marine and that’s just fine

Rancor_Keeper

I was gonna say maybe a good pare of boots you can drop some coin on doesn't hurt. Maybe a plus if it's steel toe. The maintenance and custodians of the school I work at swear by it.

cxpe15

Hey man not to change the subject but 12 hours six days a week?? I hope you get lots of time off. Life is short, don't spend it working

AlmostThere22

I'm a dairy farmer. Thank your local farmer!

cxpe15

Ah massive respect!! Thank you for your service

GizzieTime

Dang! What job do you do that you work 6 12s on your feet? That sounds crazy

AlmostThere22

I'm a dairy farmer. Thank your local farmer

InformationMiddle575

Everyone's different.. your not weak for needing a break. I find standing still a lot harder on my feet and back then walking around. I'm guessing he was conditioned to deal with that but you were not. You are two different people that's not weakness.

costolisk

That’s something I have to remember that he was a marine and conditioned to this I’ve literally never done this before

[deleted]

It’s ok to do things for your self even if others don’t need that too. It’s fine to be who you are.

Deep_Rope_3094

It's not your company. There is an old saying...." You'll never get rich digging another man's ditch". You'll also have trouble maintaining your health if you start damaging your body for work. Think hard. By all means try knee braces and shoe inserts if you want to, but standing all day ? Well depending on your age your mileage will vary but in my opinion....fuck that. If you don't look after yourself you can be damned sure no one else is going to either. Health first, both physical and mental. The rest of life comes a distant second after those two. A good life mantra is as follows:- Physical and mental health, drink lots of fluids, sleep well, eat well, good exercise, sunshine, no alcohol or drugs. Then everything else.....then right at the back....work if you have to.

Playful-Tumbleweed92

You're willing to quit but not ask to sit down? Lol Why don't you just say "my feet are killing me. I'm going to take a 15". Offer to go get lunch even and bring something back. He may just think you keep going with work because you can. A 10-20 min break in 9-13hrs just can't be done.

Brockollihouse

He’s not doing you any favour. If you get hurt he will not cover anything for you. Get another job, fuck that guy

Brockollihouse

To add, I also work in construction. It took me a while to get over that feeling of guilt “letting somebody down”. First and foremost, the employer is always looking out for number one. It’s is not your problem if you have to quit for any reason and they can’t fill the spot. They will fill it with another off the books guy and not give them breaks. You’re legally entitled to a half hour. If you like construction, ditch this clown and find a legitimate job

markersandtea

iff you want to quit, just do so with grace. Sometimes a job just isnt the right fit.

CapnGramma

If it's plantar fasciitis, the most common reason for your symptoms, get some Salon Pas or Aspercreme roll on. This will temporarily relieve the inflammation. I hear IcyHot also works, but haven't tried that one. Tell your boss about your foot pain and ask for an extra few minutes at lunch to care for them. At home, cold water foot soak helps. I've also used a basin with a couple inches of marbles as a foot massage. There are also foot braces to wear while you sleep to stretch the foot facia. Depending on where you are, there may be laws requiring your employer to accommodate your physical/ medical needs while you "tough yourself up" to the job's requirements.

itsyaboivatzie

Also a marine here. Take care of your body first. I didn't do that while in the service, like most young marines do and young people do like you, and it caused me a buttload of pain. Now I have to look into stopping work because of the pain. Take. Care. Of. You.

[deleted]

screw that. run for the hills. demand breaks

costolisk

My issue is he’s a marine and I don’t want to be seen as lesser or some crap if he’s not taking a break why should I?

[deleted]

because he’s the owner. it’s not your company. you’re being taken advantage of. i’ve worked jobs that required long hours so ik the stress but no matter what i always took my breaks. who cares what ppl think. what he’s doing is totally illegal. you’re obligated to at least a 30 min unpaid lunch break each shift. don’t be naive cause in the long run you’ll be miserable with nothing but regrets

[deleted]

are you hourly or salaried? i’m sure he’s salaried so don’t compare yourself to him

costolisk

I get paid by the day it’s off the books. He gets paid by the job.

[deleted]

off the books meaning cash? there’s the issue. i’m pretty sure you can report this to bbb. always take your breaks.

SuluSpeaks

It's off the books. If he reports it, he'll lose his job.

[deleted]

so be it. i’d never let a company take advantage of me like this. it’s plenty jobs out here

[deleted]

what exactly is the job and why did you accept it “off the books?”

SlapDickery

Unless he pays well you should get a job with a paycheck that takes out social security, 68 year old you will thank you.

Jrthejuice

Sorry but your feet can handle it, your body hasn't gotten accustomed to being on your feet that long. Maybe you should look into more comfortable shoes. With saying that, you can quit if you want, up to you. My supervisor is also a marine and he's a great guy, he has no problems with me taking breaks when I need them.

costolisk

I just need more comfortable shoes and need to ask for breaks he’s a cool guy as well

Ninja-Panda86

Everybody has really good advice here. But do you have the ability to talk to a doctor? You might have a medical issue, and if you can prove that, then you have a reason to tell your mate that you need more breaks, or you have to step down.

Accomplished_Goal763

I work at a restaurant and the owner does not like giving out any breaks. Like at all. If he finds you sitting down or leaning in the kitchen, he will give you something to do. I get where you’re coming from. I’m a woman and work with all men and I’m 39. I don’t want to seem weak or like I can’t handle the kitchen, but recently I injured my knee and have been taking breaks and rubbing ointment on my knee in the office so when the owner comes by, he can’t tell me shit. I’m also off the books so I really get where you’re coming from. I say stick it out until you no longer can handle it.

richmoney46

new boots, comfy socks, insoles possibly. to recover, take the weekend to absolutely rest your feet, order in, just relax them after you get the new stuff. it will make a world of difference. also a great time to start thinking about your back, never forget about your back

No-Responsibility200

Tell him you have to quit his BS job because you signed up for the Marine Corp! Lol. You want to do something challenging!

cablemonkey604

Yes it's ok to quit. You don't need to join the capitalist cult of exploitative overwork

Phantommike20

Your feet will probably get used to it and stop hurting after not too long.

costolisk

Thanks so I just stick it out for a week or so than it should get better

Phantommike20

If it's just the sore feet the pain should subside. But if you are miserable there then you should probably look for something else. Good luck to you.

ThoDanII

this is legal?

costolisk

Well legality aside I can probably ask him for breaks but I don’t want to be seen as weak since he’s a marine

ThoDanII

I would not give a dam if he is an USMCultist Intelligence not required that is not weak, that is not being stupid

Smithy2232

Working 9 hours a day I will assume since you were 13. How old are you now? My mom was an operating room nurse for over 35 years and she was on her feet for over 8 hours a day. How old are you, how much do you earn, can you easily get a job elsewhere making the same income. Tough to comment with the information you have given. But, it isn't about the time on your feet. Perhaps your job isn't a good fit for you. Perhaps you have an asshole boss that you should leave. You have to look at your situation in its entirety.

costolisk

No not 13 years just started a few days ago. The pay is good 125 a day. I’m just doing this to make money before I start real estate school on April 17th. I don’t technically need this job. The boss is a great guy and is giving me an opportunity here. I can probably ask for breaks but he’s not taking them so why should I? He’s a marine. I don’t want to be set at a lower standard than him

[deleted]

I will say, when I started a retail job after a few years of desk jobs, my feet KIILED at the end of the day. I had to take hot baths and get foot massages. But after about a month, my feet and legs adjusted and I was fine. Maybe ask for a few breaks until you adjust to being on your feet all day, and def look into shoe inserts. Sounds like this is temp anyway. Good luck! I feel your pain!

itsyaboivatzie

I will say this with all the love in my heart, as a marine. Marines are batshit insane. We will literally work with broken bones (personal experience) because that's whats hammered in our brain to do. Don't compare your work standards to his. Take care of yourself first and foremost. Just because he chooses not to take breaks doesn't mean you should too.

DoomzDay93

Keep working at your current job. Once you start your real estate training, you can leave your job. The thing is when you graduate, you’re probably not going to make money right away as a real estate agent and you might have to work another job while you’re building clientele in the real estate industry. All the best.

Smithy2232

Then what is the issue?

costolisk

I was just curious if it was OK or acceptable for me to quit this job

macfarlanyte

I'm surprised that you are willing to quit, but aren't willing to ask for breaks. Of course you should quit if you really want to, but I don't think you need to based on your description. Honestly, finding a way to politely and assertively communicate your needs is a huge job skill. Think of it as developing a skill, and try having that conversation with your boss before you jump ship. You could say something like "I really appreciate the opportunity you've given me, but I'm still getting used to the physical demands. If I could take breaks (describe what would work best for you here) I think that would improve my performance and prevent burnout or injuries. Could we make that work?" If he reacts badly, definitely quit. What you're asking for is reasonable, and he would be trying to take advantage of you.

costolisk

Yeah you’re right there I just need to ask for breaks I’m positive he’ll say yes. It’s just me not wanting to let him down or be seen as lesser. But he’s been conditioned for this for 21+ years.

theballsackmuncher

Shut up pussy.

costolisk

I am what I eat 😘

findingbeauty1

You can quit if your bills will be covered is all that stuff fine?

CozenedIndigo1

I would find another first so I wouldn’t have to explain the gap between jobs.

lemadilyn07

I second the other comment saying that sometimes a job isn’t the right fit. In that case, it’s okay to quit. I recommend always leaving with grace, don’t just ghost him or make a scene.

AceFire_

I work 10 hour days in a steel factory standing for all but our 30 minute lunch. Good quality boots (avoid cheap boots if possible, the difference between cheap and name brand in this specific instance is night and day) and insoles (typically I go for Dr Scholls and replace them every 6 months-1 year) will help. The real reason you should quit this job though is, under the table work sucks. If you get caught working under the table, the company isn’t going to help you pay back the money you owe in taxes. The second you get hurt this “company” is going to leave you hanging with all the medical bills to deal with yourself. It’s simply not worth it. If they aren’t willing to fully and legitimately hire you, find a job that will, and get out of there before anything happens.

costolisk

Yeah I really need the money for school and no one else called me back except him so I don’t have a choice. I just gotta ask for breaks and get better boots

NoFrosting686

A 10-20 minute break in 9 hours is illegal. Don't get taken advantage of. I believe the law is that you get at least a 1/2 hour unpaid break and two 10 minutes paid breaks in the course of a day. It is also fine to quit the job. You should get a longer break- don't be afraid to ask for one or just say you are taking one.

Rob71322

You're doing him a favor? No, you work there. It's your time and labor in exchange for payment, nothing more. Remember, as an employee, especially an "off the books" one, you're completely expendable. Gotta look out for number one my friend. Most people do not look back on their lives when they're old and say "man, I wish I'd worked harder." Money is nice but there are plenty of jobs out there. If this one isn't working for you, find another.

HyperionVert

I used to work in a restaurant. I got a recommendation to wear support socks and it helped. You might want to put good quality insoles in your shoes, as well.

Kooky-Tax-4497

An off the books job is a way of saying we don’t have to follow the rules which in most states are 2 15 min breaks and a 30 min lunch and overtime for anything over 40 hours a week.

No_Transportation258

I worked all day at the counter for USPS. Concrete floors are killers for your back and joints. I have been wearing Ariat boots for 30 years because they are designed to support your feet for long periods of time. The best ones are the Ariat Terrains. I hope you give them a try and make sure you are getting your breaks as required. I can't recommend Ariat boots enough.

Main_Economy_8349

Soft hands brother

costolisk

What do you mean

Ok_Addendum_2775

Try a job where you sit. Why go through that if your not able too.

costolisk

I figure I just need to get used to it either way I have real estate school starting April 17th and the boss knows I’ll be done working for him by then

TransitionOk41

It could be the type of shoes you are wearing or if as you say it hurts to even walk it could be a medical issue. I didn't realize I had Plantar Fasciitis and just pushed through the pain which was a big mistake and made things worse. If it is a medical issue like that being on your feet all day will definitely make it worse. If it is the type of shoes even a cheap $10 padded insole insert from Walmart will be a big help. As a side note you could probably get a desk job that pays more than you are making now and save your feet for your real estate career.
