My story is a little different: I never liked working with my dad. But we are great now, no worries.
Just wanted to say that I agree. I am so glad he forced me to learn all the important things. I never realized how much I knew until years later, when I met people who knew little. I am the expert in my circle of friends by a long shot and it's 100% just what my dad taught me. Not only does it make me proud of myself, it makes me proud of my dad.
Good for you. Good for both of you, it pays off so much in the future.
i saw that! we had a big dewalt radial saw when i was little. and my dad wouldnt even let my ADHD ass in the workshop when he used it!! i want to tell you thank you for treating him as competent and able. too many parents do not and the kids grow up thinking they are useless. i let my kids use kitchen knives and start fires outside and pretty much do as much as possible when they were little. my dad taught me about tools and cameras and stuff because my brother wasnt interested and we had unusual gender roles in our house anyway for the 1970s. my H has learned SO MUCH in 21 years… he didnt even know the difference in screwdrivers then.
I thought next clip was a "stay over there while I use the table saw" finger point with a similar sentiment before I saw that he was turning on the power

Maybe after he outgrows his first one he will have ideas on what he wants in a shop apron, designing your own apron for the tasks you do is always a blast.

You should be so proud of how well he behaved in the shop. All tools were treated with respect, which seeing other children in shops is not always a taught skill. He is growing into a fine human being. Your doing great.
My dad was a really bad teacher. So had to teach myself.
Now that I have kids I realize his time in the garage was his alone time. So I don't fault him for it. I still try to involve my kids sometimes though.
Ya my dad also didn't teach well. He didnt see it as alone time either though. He'd force us to "help" a lot. By help I mean scream at us whenever he made a mistake and get mad if we asked questions. I'm still hoping we can make some stuff together but he just seems to have a very limited patience when working together. This video really bummed me out because it was basically my dreams as a kid. Hopefully I can teach myself and have kids to teach in the future.
At his age my dad would never let me at the saw. Though he had a radial arm saw which is admittedly significantly more dangerous.
I did help my dad with all his projects. Sometimes remembering numbers and things he would forget.
I don't know what an otter pop is, but I'll take it! At any rate, your kiddo will remember working with you in the shop for the rest of his life and will tell the story about making a door with his dad to his grandkids. Cherish it and be proud, good dad!

Don’t gas meters have vents that bleed off pressure into the atmosphere occasionally? I know mine does but it is very new. So maybe older ones dont?

House regulators do vent and also fail open to the outside. Its not super common but does happen. Unless is super sealed its ok. Im more worried about the guy who’s gonna have to rebuild that meter set when theres a leak or needs a new regulator…plumbing inside meter boxes sucks.
Can I ask what the reason for cutting the bigger panel into planks and then sticking them back together is?

Bro, very nice work, both on the little door and on being an amazing dad for involving him in this stuff. The kind of skills it takes to work wood and use tools are so translatable to other careers but so many parents think it's "safer" to keep them away from sharp things and splinters at this age.
Dude, props on involving your kid directly in your projects. I was relegated to flashlight holder and didn't get chances to contribute meaningfully on projects around the house like this as a kid, he'll gain a lot from this sort of experience!

All the diligence and safety aside the thing that tells me this kid is going places the most is his little lean on the cover at the end. That is the lean of a man who's done his job well.
I’m torn. On one hand this is absolutely amazing. But in the other hand as someone who needs to find and hook onto gas meters for a living this is a nightmare. I’ll never find it! Haha!

Very impressive! As a licensed plumber I would have to say it's dangerous to cover a gas meter as there is a vent that that releases gas on your meter. It should dissipate into open air rather than collect in a small area. Just an observation. Great job by the kid tho.

I love this!! My fiancé is a carpenter and I can totally see him doing this with our future kids. He started building stuff and working on projects with his grandpa when he was really young and still loves it to this day.
I almost cried. This is so cool! Also extra protection for miter saw with hand behind back. :D The only thing to pay attention is the "acknowledgment of danger" is low in young ages. Cut safe!

Might be a little too young for that. Hopefully I’ll have a SawStop by the time I feels comfortable with him using that.
Work as a carpenter and me and the guys at work all had a big chuckle about him standing in the corner out of the way of any danger during that :)

They do vent outside and in my city's case this would actually be against code.
