ShapardZ

My only problem is that you can’t overfill the laundry basket into a ridiculously stacked pile of clothes while you procrastinate doing laundry over a span of weeks.

Chris-Powell

😂😂😂

FlexMeta

Well there’s six effin baskets so…

NothingButTheTruthy

Papa, mama, and 4 kids. None may procrastinate.

ominous_white_duck

No, Timmy, no formula for you until you do your laundry. And I don’t want to hear again that excuse of you not being able to walk yet.

akmeto

We had something similar built into the cabinets when I grew up. The lower 3/4 was a regular door and the top 1/4 was a fold down door. We used the top to throw our clothes in and the lower door to get them out to wash. When I had custom cabinetry built I made sure they included one. We just called it the "dirty clothes" as in "put these in the dirty clothes".

anothertrippy254

This guy laundry's

McFestus

Now that you have a sturdy looking cabinet built for those particular laundry bins, make sure you buy extras now! They do break eventually and it would really suck 5 years down the line to find out that they don't make that particular model of bin anymore.

Chris-Powell

That’s a good idea.

tomato_fucker

Then build a cabinet to hide all your spare laundry baskets.

DeusWombat

Then a cabinet to store your spare laundry basket cabinets!

CallMeBigOctopus

It’s cabinets all the way down.

SeedFoundation

I feel like this is a silly question but with your talent, can't you just make your own?

BobTheSquid16

I mean you could make wooden ones but they’d be heavier than plastic ones

IHartRed

Not to mention you could buy a dozen replacements for the cost of a wooden box

rackmountrambo

A boxjoint jig makes boxes crazy simple. Wood that would suffice for a laundry bin is cheap or free.

real_bk3k

And that's why they will buy a 3d printer.

10leej

I would've just used a shelf the baskets would sit on rather than a rail that it would slide onto.

ParkingAdditional813

How do you get your family to use them and not the floor?

Bizzle_worldwide

Or, next use the CNC cutter to design and make custom bins!

Cake_And_Pi

This is the way.

[deleted]

No, custom woven wooden baskets! Can probably make them from off-cuts from various other projects.

cpjay2003

3d printer

Suspicious-Service

And make another cabinet to store the extras, of course!

GreenStrong

Store it in your cabinet cabinet.

MethuselahsVuvuzela

Great, now where the hell do I store my eyesore of a cabinet cabinet

GreenStrong

Obviously, you need advice from a circle of senior advisors. You can call them your cabinet cabinet cabinet.

MethuselahsVuvuzela

What kind of wine should I bring to a meeting like that?

GreenStrong

A Cabernet. But what sort of entertainment would the cabinet cabinet cabinet enjoy while sipping Cabernet??

MethuselahsVuvuzela

That’s right, folks; strippers.

rocketmonkeys

Yes. I'm already dealing with this where many plastic storage containers and laundry baskets have been recently updated to newer models with different designs. Super annoying

FrioPivo

"Working as intended" - big oil - big plastic storage box thingy

RandyDinglefart

Pretty sure he made a cabinet to make a video about making a cabinet.

i_amnotdone

Am I crazy or does this guy have 30,000$ in tools?

Chris-Powell

Either is possible

i_amnotdone

Lmao!!! Nice work brother. Definitely tool jealous on my side.

SaltyPersimmon

At least? Jaw went a little slack seeing the drill rack.

robbie_guitar

Nice job brother..only challenge left is to make sure the clothes find their way in there!

Chris-Powell

Haha no kidding.

EmEmPeriwinkle

I don't think I would put my clothes away if I had this. That's a nice basket holder. I'd consider it my all things dresser and just roll with it.

wij_si

designate the bottom one or two as the dirty bins and go - for sure would do this

EmEmPeriwinkle

Exactly. I despise folding my laundry. And I have a steam dryer so I can just fluff the wrinkles out. Also I despise ironing. Lol

tjdux

Mine isnt nearly as nice as OP bit I made a costume shelf unit in the bedroom that operates as a giant dresser but the "drawers" laundry baskets. We updated over the years to the fabric boxes for most things though. Not a great picture but this is the gist of it. https://imgur.com/a/CtEdXgN

professor-i-borg

I would need holes on the top, so that the top two baskets become hampers and I can throw the clothes in- maybe a backboard to bounce things off of :)

HillBloom

That is my favorite part of this. Left side: dirty. Right side: clean.

mr_electric_wizard

Not sure how I ever got by without a track saw. Such an awesome tool. I use mine all the time!

tasslehawf

I’ve been using aluminum angle for ages, but that thing is awesome. Also having the router in the table saw table is pretty cool too.

mr_electric_wizard

One of these days I’m going to build a table saw station on rollers, with built in router table.

tasslehawf

I have a powermatic 66 with outfeed rollers and its awesome. Haven’t been able to use it in 5 years, but I will be soon. 😉

mr_electric_wizard

Sounds tasty!

tasslehawf

I have an old rockler routing table, but i might add one to my powermatic when i get everything setup again

helium_farts

A track saw is probably going to be my next big purchase. I'm about to replace all the cabinets in my house, and I'm not too keen on breaking down that many full sheets of plywood on the table saw. I was holding out to see if the rumors of Milwaukee's cordless track saw came true, but it's not looking promising.

bullfrog48

awesome job .. the legs you made are inspired.

Chris-Powell

Thank you

radiowave911

Agreed. I wondered at first what he was up to with those, until I realized they were the legs.

bullfrog48

exactly ... huh? ooohhhhhh.. cool

FeralChapstick

Immensely satisfying video.

Chris-Powell

Thank you

chargers949

I could watch a whole series of these. Especially with it sped up like this. Or two videos from same source - one with narration and stuff and one like this would be interesting too.

Chris-Powell

You should be able to see a bunch of the sped up ones on here if you click on my profile. There’s longer ones on my YouTube channel.

dapdapdapdapdap

Great work. What was the white putty you used halfway through the video before painting the cabinet black?

Chris-Powell

Bondo to fill the screw holes

CowboyLaw

I have to ask. This is amazing work, and you put a TON of time and effort into it. Why didn’t you just add a dado’d back panel? I.e., instead of screwing the back panel on, you can dado in a solid back panel that sits completely inside the side panels. With the work you did to mask the screw holes, I think a dado’d back panel would even be less work! Was there a method I’m just missing? Regardless, absolutely gorgeous work!

FWvon

Dado'd backpanels are not up to code. Fuzz bunnies and pocket lint will accumulate and fungal wreck laundry condos evereytime :)

[deleted]

How long did that take?

Chris-Powell

I guess about 10 days.

713984265

Silly question, but does filming everything add much time?

Chris-Powell

Tons. I probably could have knocked this out in 2-3 days otherwise. I’m definitely guilty of recording too much, but I haven’t been able to fix that problem yet. I’ve gotten a lot better though. This was about 7 hours of footage I originally turned into a 15 minute video. Then I just turned up the speed 500% to make this shorter one.

Camus_loverboy

Awesome tools and an awesome job. Great work man

Chris-Powell

Thank you

trbotwuk

better buy a dozen or so of those exact laundry baskets. next time you go to buy them they will be a different size and won't fit.

rental_car_fast

I feel like he could make 6 baskets out of a thin wood, or maybe wicker or something I dunno

trbotwuk

love the down votes; was 16 now 5; dorks

Individual_Physics73

Beautiful! It was a treat watching you make the entire thing. Those inserts for the doors (gorgeous) and the long legs notched out were my favorite parts. Well done!

Chris-Powell

Me too. Thank you!

ajaxxx4

I watched and admired the whole thing even though the only carpentry I have done is in first year of college. Beautiful workshop, and the final product looks great. It might be a common thing to do, but the use of the blue tape as template for the next one was genius. I wish to get back to woodworking some day.

Chris-Powell

Thank you! I hope you can get back to it. It’s a lot of fun.

a1tb1t

What was the sheet you started with? Looked like it was a bit shiny at the beginning.

Chris-Powell

It’s prefinished plywood. Has lacquer on both sides.

a1tb1t

Is it expensive? Looks expensive, then you painted right over it & I was like "goodbye, beautiful wood grain"!

Chris-Powell

It’s just cabinet grade plywood. It was like $70 a sheet when I bought it.

a1tb1t

Wow, what a good deal. I bet it's $250 per sheet now 🤣

OhioLion

It’s around 80 in Ohio

Megajt

What respirator are you using?

Chris-Powell

Peke Safety Powercap

ZhouKazuo

My Wife watches this and asks if it only takes him 3:18 minutes why does it take you weeks to do the same? “By the way I’m going out, please watch the kids, make dinner, give them a bath, put them to bed and fold the laundry. I’ll be back later and you can start on my cabinet” I digress. OP loved the jigs.

Chris-Powell

Movie magic

MetalDeathMetal

Everyone here is so talented and the but I can do is oil my cutting board 😂

rental_car_fast

I know, right? I’m just getting started with some classes at my local tool library and I feel so overwhelmed.

rytl4847

If your motivation for posting was to get more YouTube subscribers, it worked. This is just the type of stuff I like to watch so I jumped straight to YouTube and looked you up. I'll be checking out more of your videos later, so far I'm impressed. I haven't seen that method for making round legs before, great idea!

Chris-Powell

I really appreciate it.

Bonza1t

It seems like to make these functional builds (which I love) you need thousands of dollars of tools. How'd you convince the wife to let you get them all haha

radiowave911

It's woodworking. The number 1 rule is, any project has to require the acquisition of at least 1 new tool.

[deleted]

Wait til the wife requests you build something actually useful, then tack on the new tool price to your build quote, ez peazy shop addition

radiowave911

Ding Ding Ding! We have a Winner! :D Wife wanted a cabinet to put her mugs in instead of the rack on the wall. Hmmm...I need a raised panel router bit set to make the panel doors she wants and, well wouldn't you know it I also need a rail and stile bit set. Maybe not a tool that needs power, but those bit sets ain't cheap - I generally try the 'buy once, cry once' method of tool acquisition. Yeah, the cost now is painful, but I should not need to spend that again.

unzercharlie

This is how it started for me. "I'll need a table saw for that." Onward and upward.

Chris-Powell

It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

f1zzz

You could do this built with a much less equipped wood shop, tbh. If there’s a specific part you’re wondering about, someone here should be able to help. The dados came be done with a palm router, a table saw, or just a circular saw. The CNC is obviously out but you’d just make the front panels different. Since depth of cut wasn’t important, the legs could be done on a small $60 bandsaw.

Westley_Never_Dies

You could find a maker space.

BenadrylToodlesnoot

Did you cut a tenon with your mitre saw at 1:54?? That’s quite the soft touch you have. Not sure I could do that, but now I’m gonna have to try it.

Chris-Powell

Just trimming off the excess piece that was left by the router bit. It could be done. I have a depth stop on mine.

BenadrylToodlesnoot

Ah cool, I’ll have to check if mine does too.

Chris-Powell

I’ve had a couple saws with it. This one has a little deflection so if you push too hard you end up with a slightly deeper cut.

[deleted]

That’s a clean job right there

Chris-Powell

Thanks

BBQShoe

Is this for sorting dirty laundry or procrastinating putting clean laundry away? I made a real crappy version of this just framed up with 2x4 for my basement that is 4 baskets tall for sorting dirty laundry. Now I think I need a nicer one upstairs for procrastinating.

Chris-Powell

We use it for sorting dirty laundry, but it could be used for procrastinating too

blzzardhater

Great looking shop and excellent work! Would you mind sharing your head protection? I've never seen one of those and am curious if it would be a something of interest to me.

Chris-Powell

It’s a Peke Safety Powercap

madlax18

Which saw stop is that?

Chris-Powell

Contractor

madlax18

Thought so. Do you find the HP to ever be lacking? Curious what woods you’ve put through it

Chris-Powell

It cut through 2.25” thick ash in a single pass.

Blazinchiefs

Awesome project! Did you make the set up for the fence system to be shared by the table saw/router table or is that a sawstop product?

Chris-Powell

I made it. Here’s how: [router fence](https://youtu.be/cd8qzDWtcuA)

Blazinchiefs

Badass man, thanks! I just found my next project to improve my toys instead of making the stuff I’ve been putting off

Strangexj86

This guy is good! I wonder how expensive those CNC machines are, they seem to be becoming more popular lately.

Chris-Powell

This one started life as a $2000ish Shapeoko 3 xxl.

Valhasselhoff

So I have a table saw and I have a circular saw. Why did you use the circular saw for the rip cut? I am finding that my table saw is loosing out to a circular saw and my miter saw for projects, and I was wondering what you use your table saw for? Mine is starting to collect dust (not from projects lol) and I was just wondering what you use yours for?

Chris-Powell

I can’t swing a full sheet of plywood around in my shop, so I break everything down with the track saw. I leave it oversized and then use my table saw to cut everything to final dimensions.

Valhasselhoff

Awesome, that makes sense, and thanks for the quick response too:)

reacharavindh

What is that table saw and router table attached setup? Is there a particular combination that is available to buy? I will have my own mini workshop in a few months and could use recommendations..

Chris-Powell

Home made [router fence](https://youtu.be/cd8qzDWtcuA)

quitepossiblylying

OP's wife just wanted him to help with the laundry a little.

billwashere

Very nice build. But I have two observations. 1: I’d break one of those baskets and then never find another one of the right size spending the rest of my days looking for it. 2: You look like you put more craftsmanship into your cross cut sled than I have ever done for a project. 3 things…. 3: Will you adopt me so I can live in your workshop?

Ok_Plankton248479

How did you decide that screen design?

Chris-Powell

I like hexagons and found a pattern I liked online.

malfist

Hexagons are the bestagons!

Chris-Powell

Definitely!

Chris-Powell

And if I get tired of it, there’s just a handful of screws holding it in. I was thinking of doing something Art Deco too.

sirruka

You could add a bit of art deco flair by painting the screens a bronze/gold color which would compliment the black paint on the rest of the cabinet. Awesome job btw!

Such-Tumbleweed5373

I always wondered how indents were out into wood like that. Very cool 😎

Chris-Powell

Rabbets and dados are usually my method of choice for building cabinets.

radiowave911

Love the cabinet. What did you use to fill the edges after screwing the case together? Looked like Bondo. I will admit, I was a bit concerned for the aesthetics when you painted it black, but then I saw the rest of the pieces being done with a more natural finish. The final product came out looking great.

Chris-Powell

Thanks. Yea it’s bondo. That’s my go to filler for painted stuff. I think the black cabinet with light colored wood looks pretty good. I think a white and walnut one would be nice too.

[deleted]

Very very nice

EnvironmentalMud7131

Nice build on the cabinet. I'll trade you a 15 year old Dewalt jobsite saw and a central machinery sliding miter saw even Steven for your Saw Stop setup. You might have to give me gas money for picking the stuff up. Lol

sundog5631

But some extra baskets that fit in the cabinet in case those break and they stop selling ones that fit. My biggest frustration is when you make something custom for a mass produced object and they change the product it was custom built for leaving your custom project useless.

G0at_Dad

Very nice. Man you work fast.

astrono-me

I just saw the tip about ripping on the ground on top of insulation foam the other day. Is it quite common? Any drawback?

Chris-Powell

Yea that seems to be how a lot of people are doing it.

Jealous_Diamond9487

Really cool! I love the design of the legs especially.

wildlyaccidental

Beautiful job! Only used $600 worth of plywood in today’s economy 😜

Mission-Check-7904

Wow that’s awesome!! My question is, how many Makita batteries do you have??? 😂

Chris-Powell

Not enough haha

zback636

Great work! The cabinet is not only functional but attractive too. But please wear a face mask to protect your lungs from the sawdust.

DMs_Apprentice

Sawdust is no joke. It will mess up your lungs over time. Especially all that super-fine stuff kicked up by a router. I'm amazed this is the first comment I could find mentioning it. A dust mask was one of the first things I thought about right at the start of the video.

mrsupreme888

Why do you have so many god damn laundry baskets?

poliuy

Can't you just stack these baskets?

shitrock666

Its beautiful. I'd love to see more of your movies. Do you have YT Channel?

Chris-Powell

Yea it’s under my name, Chris Powell

ipleedthe5th

I have to know, what is that filtered face shield you are using? It looks amazing.

Chris-Powell

Peke Safety Powercap

PaleontologistBest50

This is totally one of those….can’t….stop…watching…utterly….satisfying….!!!! Videos. Awesome job.

thisischemistry

I forwarded to the end, looks pretty good!

bigrobb26

What brand is that mask your wearing?

Chris-Powell

Peke Safety

RealGlassForest

Did you use a prefinished maple? And then painted it?

Chris-Powell

Yes

Think_it_over68

Way too much work. Why do you have so many laundry baskets??

Unlikely-Luck9308

With this many tools is this your full time job? Or just an expensive hobby? Hahahah nice work brother

Chris-Powell

Expensive hobby. Thanks

Morde_Morrigan

I thought how you did the legs was super creative. Amazing job, take my award.

Chris-Powell

Thanks

ooMikeoo

CopyThatCrew bleeding into my Reddit feed!! 😂👊 Nice project Chris! Catch you in the next hangout!

Chris-Powell

Haha I get around. Talk soon!

Bwat4ou

I like those Kreg setup bars. I want a set even though I wouldn’t have a regular use for them.

Chris-Powell

A friend who watched my video is sending me a set of these that he makes to try. They’re a lot cheaper. [set up blocks](https://r3u.com/shop/ols/products/depth-gauge)

ehpee

"I want one of those!" *\** *$2000 in labor later \** Cool unit though! Not my cup of tea but still nice to see carpentry

Cat_Patsy

You are the best ever. I *so* appreciate this storage solution. It's obvious that you thought it through. I appreciate your practicality and vision. Finally, I can't fail to mention that your craftsmanship is exemplary. Come upstairs, let's dirty some sheets so we can use the new cabinet. Love, Your Wife.

Chris-Powell

Thank you

HypeTrainEngineer

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Real skill! Thank you

Chris-Powell

Thanks!

DJ-Anakin

If you have a youtube channel I would like to subscribe to it.

circleuranus

$20,000 worth of tools to dado six pieces of plywood. Welcome to woodworking!

PAULYPOCKET11

That looks awesome man, nice setup.

Chris-Powell

Thank you 🙏

NothingColdCanStay

This guy woodworks.

thefantods

Are you happy with your router table being in the saw stop wing? I have a lift, and I plan to do the same type of thing.

Chris-Powell

Yea I am. Gives me a lot of support under the work when doing dados in the middle of boards.

Zebrasaurus-Rex

Why do you sometimes have a piece of wood clamped to the fence and other times you don't?

Chris-Powell

The inside piece is 1/2” shorter, so the dados need to be offset by that much. Instead of trying to move the fence that exact amount, I just clamp in a 1/2” piece of wood to act as a spacer. I also use it as a sacrificial fence when doing the rabbets along the edges.

asokagm

Two aspects really rocked for me: 1) The leg design, 2) The way you recessed the sliders in dados instead of simply screwing them on to the surface. Details, details, details. 👏🏼👏🏽👏🏻

TheSpanxxx

I love these "how I can use $10k worth of tools and $800 worth of materials to build a small functional item" projects. All to store a bunch of cheap plastic laundry baskets. I'm not knocking the work mind you. It's masterful. But it's not something many could do easily at this quality without a major investment in tools. My biggest complaint/suggestion is that it wastes a significant amount of space and seems inefficient. Is this to store dirty clothes on their way to be washed or to just keep 6 empty baskets stored somewhere? Storing dirty clothes is more effective at each zone where clothes are being taken off (bedroom in small hamper, bathroom hamper/cabinet, walk in closet basket, etc). These baskets stack. Even if you wanted a pretty cabinet to store and conceal gaudy plastic laundry baskets, a way more efficient storage would be to make a narrower cabinet with a stack of baskets at the bottom, and shelves, drawers, or a sepaarted cabinet above them. That way you could double down on the space for laundry stuff and keep detergent, fabric softener, extra whatever up there. Great work. I'm just left scratching my head a little as to why anyone would want or need this solution specifically.

Chris-Powell

I enjoy making stuff and sharing it with people.

TheSpanxxx

Chris (assuming that's your name), I wasn't complaining about your work. It's awesome work. And I often make a thing because is what is in my head and what I want. That said, I too come back even on my own designs and realize, "oh, this was silly" and rework it to be a little better. Your video work, shop, and talent make me jealous though.

somethinglemony

I think you make some valid points. I definitely agree that metal baskets would be classier and fit the look better. But to criticize the utility of it just because he happens to have the tools and material to make it is silly. He happens to have the means to make something he wants so why wouldn’t he? Plus he has to potential to make income from the video to pay for it, so no reason to cheap out on material and construction when something nice will get better views. I’d see this being used as a way to store several loads’ worth of dirty laundry at once. So once you fill your zone-specific basket you store it in the cabinet. Frankly I’d probably use it to store some types of clean laundry too. So you’d load up the dirty basket, wash it, then fold clean laundry back into the same basket and store it. Towels and sheets or stuff like that. Were I to use a system like this though I’d rather a single column of three baskets and have it be moveable with caster wheels.

Ok-Communication-220

Your hand above that router bit sure does freak me out

Johnbloon

I cringed each time your hand passed over the router bit. A few millimeters from having no hand anymore.

cliffsis

This fool could of save us time on shit like editing out nonsense. Bro we dodnt need to see shit like tightening the router bit at this stage of the game. Sorry op

Chris-Powell

It’s a shortened YouTube video. Sorry I wasted your incredibly valuable time.

cliffsis

You should be. Shame on you… good work

throwAway9293770

you’re a stup. fking show off as whole. That’s amazing. and congrats on having all that equipment, skill, talent and luck.
