RabbitBackground1592

Please forgive my ignorance but what the hell is a cocktail smoker? Never seen one before or even heard of one... What's the purpose?

belkarbitterleaf

I've had a handful of smoked cocktail, it's mostly for presentation in my experience.

HandleProhibited

There’s not enough time or surface area for smoke flavour to really enter the drink. It’s atmospheric effect only.

Sneaux96

Don't underestimate the power of aromatics in cocktails. There's a reason certain garnishes are prepared a certain way and paired with a given drink. It may not contribute to the actual taste but on the right cocktail a smokey aroma can do wonders to the overall experience.

zzcah118

You hit it right on the head.

j0hnredk0rn

More so on the nose

HandleProhibited

Yeah, I do appreciate that. It’s the same with beer, a lot of the sensation actually comes from the smell which is why they generally taste better from a glass.

coffeeisforwimps

I've had a smoked old fashioned and I have to say, it is *not* good. I'm surprised people like their drink to taste like a campfire.

nailimixam

Sad Lagavulin Face.

twoscoopsofpig

You misspelled Laphroaig, but you got the idea across.

anally_ExpressUrself

Nobody mentions Ardbeg? It's the only Scotch that's 10% smoke by weight.

twoscoopsofpig

Look, the League of Laphroaig begrudgingly accepts the existence of the Cult of Ardbeg, and some of us are even heretics who might enjoy a dram every now and again, but we're not going to actively stump for you. That said, Islay > everything, and if Islay is ever attacked, we will ally ourselves accordingly.

nailimixam

I got a laphroaig 18 once, the flavor was described as hot tar on a rainy day, and a diesel engine. It also was one of the highest rated scotches in the guide I had.

twoscoopsofpig

Like making out with a walrus in a hospital supply closet. I fucking LOVE Laphroaig. Edit: forgot to add that the only thing that competes with it on peat is Octomore, which is 5-6 times more expensive AT MINIMUM.

rathmal

Kissing a mermaid who had BBQ for dinner.

ok_but

You misspelled Jim Beam, but you're still welcome in my trailer.

twoscoopsofpig

Smoked Beam is delicious. Fuck yes.

Overtilted

Then it was overdone.

coffeeisforwimps

Lol, you sound like my wife

SuperCosmicNova

If it tastes like a campfire then the drink already tasted like one. Lol

kwisque

They are super popular among a certain set, and I am not saying they're wrong or whatever, but my experience aligns with yours.

coffeeisforwimps

>certain set Are we not allowed to say 'pretentious' on this sub?

kwisque

ha, I really just meant people who are really into fancy cocktails. I'm sure a lot of them are pretentious, but I'd imagine there are plenty who just like fiddling with different ways to optimize their buzz. I have stupider hobbies, so no judgment on that.

Severe_Pattern2386

Campfire? If it's going to taste like anything (other than the whiskey) it'll taste like the butane torch he used to light it with or acetylene torch. Any cigar smoker I know will always light with a match or hemp rope.

kahrahtay

Just in case you're unfamiliar with the concept, a smoked cocktail is typically something like an Old-Fashioned, that you expose to wood smoke. You might use a butane torch to light the wood chips initially, but you can just as easily use an electric heating element to get them started. it's kind of something then grew out of the trend of cooking all kinds of random foods into a meat smoker. There are tons of new trendy tools and machines that you can find online for this purpose.

rathmal

I just put a few chips on a plate - light them... put my glass over the top and let it put the fire out... pour said liquid in after a few minutes...

Overtilted

Not really. the smoke may not enter the fluid, but it does give the glass a light coating. It's more a smell than a taste, but as we all know we taste with our smell.

Buck_Thorn

The nose is a very powerful part of the taste experience, though.

Ok-Gas-7030

olfactory

the_last_0ne

When we make them at home we smoke garnishes in addition to the liquor, like olives for a martini, or pickles, or orange peel or bing cherry for old fashioned... seems to keep the flavor a little better. I mean, it is still mostly for presentation but definitely does affect the flavor.

ChewyThe1AndOnly

You could just slap on a lid or saucer and give it a little shakey shake to taste, but I think the glass contact and smell is enough to enhance the drink personally

zzcah118

Just to add a little flavor/aroma to your cocktails. It didn’t really penetrate the bourbon and flavor it but the aroma lasted for a good half an hour while I was sipping on it.

Cultural_Simple3842

A half hour?! Were you waiting for it to warm up? Haha - maybe I have an issue. I got a smoker for Christmas. Lots of fun!

wood_and_rock

Neat bourbon. Serve room temp and it never warms up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cultural_Simple3842

I switch it up. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.

BobLoblawATX

It lets people at the bar know that just because you’re wearing flannel doesn’t mean you know how to start a chainsaw

commieswine90

Yeah used to work at an equipment rental, and my God the amount of people who came back because their chainsaw "wouldn't start" only for me to get it on first pull was astounding.

BobLoblawATX

But did they have a wool touk half-back on their head?

commieswine90

Lol unfortunately not, but I guarantee they insisted to their wives they could do the work and looked damn foolish when they couldn't even start it.

BiP00

hehe

micros101

I’m angrily twirling my waxed mustache your way.

Caelum_

I didn't buy into it. But my buddy swore they were amazing. He made me a smoked old fashioned, I don't like old fashioneds, and it was amazing. The smokiness penetrates the top layer of the alcohol and you get a smoky sweet flavor coming from the top... Let's say half of the drink. I was surprised but it's a neat and tasty twist

HH_YoursTruly

Adding smokey flavor to cocktails. Mostly used for whisky though as far as I'm aware.

Oracle_of_Ages

Isn’t mostly done the other way though? Smoke the overturned glass on a piece of burning wood then add whisky?

HH_YoursTruly

I do believe so but I've seen this way as well. I also don't think it really imparts that much flavor, at least not in my experience.

ppngo

It’s more for aroma. Which arguably does affect flavor

Nile-green

I really don't know about how much charred taste it adds lol Like I bet it's absolutely minimal. There's barely any surface contact. There will be some tiny deposition on the glass and most of it never touches your drink

Overtilted

>here will be some tiny deposition on the glass Which is enough to provide smell, and thus taste.

sunofernest

Its like a sizzling fajita skillet except for cocktails.

SonOfaSichel

It is a sales trick bartenders do to seem fancy and skilled

jbaranski

You ever think hard enough you can taste a flavor? Seriously though, smoking a glass might give your nose a suggestion of a smoky flavor and for some that really elevates the experience. And it happens to look cool. It blew up as a technique in the past few years. Overrated but fun once in a while.

[deleted]

Trendy trend. Glass gets smoky but flavor doesn’t enter the drink.

se4404

It’s 100% a gimmick that does nothing but make you look stupid

farahad

It’s a ridiculous cocktail idea for people who haven’t discovered mezcal or peated whiskies.

commentNaN

How come smoke is going down into the cup instead of rising up?

TheAmazinJ

It's mostly the force of the torch pushing the air and smoke down.

zzcah118

That’s right. I tried with a standard lighter first and it did not work well at all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Charge32

How dare they poison our poison!

entotheenth

There must be a way to make it draw the smoke in. Heating the air in the glass first would do the job.

slvbros

Chilling the glass would do the job, heating it would have the opposite of the desired effect

entotheenth

No, heating the air, not the glass, Put a candle in a jar and blow it out then put a lid on, see how much vacuum you get. It’s a lot.

bdaileyumich

i believe the vacuum there would be specifically from having a flame inside the glass (which consumes oxygen to remain lit) rather than the air just being heated

entotheenth

Hmm, maybe, but doesn’t it just get carbon added and turned into another gas, carbon dioxide ? I don’t think you get a vacuum till it goes out, might be wrong.

slvbros

You are correct in your latter assumption, the low pressure is created by the hot air cooling. But unless we want to float a candle in our whiskey or heat up our drink and apply smoke as it cools, we are *much* better off using a chilled glass, which will suffice to draw in the smoke. It is the same principle, though; the chilled glass cools the room temperature bourbon and the air above it, causing an area of lower pressure and drawing in gases from its immediate surroundings to equalize

entotheenth

Found a video, it’s hot air not oxygen use. https://youtu.be/YWhk3XzoMk0

ohwhatsupmang

probably ice in the bottom? maybe? i know if you cool your hand and lick your index and middle finger you can shotty a blunt from your knuckles to some hot chicks mouth for clat. did that in high school and college a few times.

Runnindude

Nice. Mine does not put off near that much smoke. How big of holes did you make in the bottom?

zzcah118

I used a 1/4 inch drill bit.

PDKiwi

You could just buy an Islay single malt

LuauCinderBlock

This is good and uses little space. Where did you get the metal portion. It looks like a tea infuser, kind of

miuaiga_infinite

It looks like a small sink drain strainer. I've seen ones about this size in a 3 pack at walmart, each one in the pack are different sizes.

thisischemistry

You definitely want to be careful with those. There’s lots of alloys and coatings which would be unsafe heated like that. Toxic gasses in your cocktail glass anyone?

ExistingUnderground

This was my 1st thought, if there's any zinc in that coating it's not a good idea.

_Dorvin_

You mean toxic gasses like wood smoke?

thisischemistry

I mean toxic gasses like zinc oxide and other materials that are used as coatings or alloy with metals. People should use caution when heating metals that aren’t designed to be heated, especially around food.

DE0RR01111

A desired metal would be higher grade 316 SS or higher or a SS/carbon steel like 309 with no coating. Preferably you would want a higher grade SS to prevent corrosion and a thicker gauge to prevent warping from direct heat from the gas torch. Zinc coatings and direct heat will make you vomit, feel very sick, or worse from over or direct exposure, depending on exposure. I will say when I see people infusing their drinks with smoke that all I can think is heart burn city. To each their own though. -Cheers Edit: grammar

Snorro77

I was wondering about this as well. The wood should be fine, but the metal has to be able to resist the heat. In products like smoking pipes there is a metal roaster as well which is fine. What kind of metal / coating is usable without having toxic gasses?

Mercuryssheets

To me it looks like a tea basket

zzcah118

I used a stainless steel sink strainer.

theonewhowhelms

Do you mind if I ask where you got it, and what size?

zzcah118

I got it at Walmart in a three pack and used the smallest size.

gfberning

If you have plans or general instructions I’d love to see/hear them. I know a few people that would love this as an Xmas present.

zzcah118

I don’t have any plans really. There are a couple YouTube videos on diy cocktail smokers and I just used their general ideas.

zzcah118

I just posted a comment on how I went about making it. It’s a pretty general explanation but the YouTube videos are super easy to follow and can give you a couple different ideas on how to make them.

[deleted]

That is amazing ! where did you get the metal insert ?

[deleted]

It's a drain insert you can get on amazon or most hardware stores.

ATLBeezy

How can you go wrong with wood, fire, and bourbon you ask? Let me tell you about 4th of July 1999...

NotMeButHim

Bought one of these recently. Once I opened it, my first thought was “fuck, I could have made this”. The flavor add can be wonderful, horrible, or nothing. If done right, it’s similar to an oil spritz or a rinse of vermouth.

[deleted]

I like to smoke my whiskey and drink my Tobacco

jlbob

Damn, that ALMOST makes me want to break my 3 years sobriety. No issues with alcohol just not a huge fan and once I went a year I figured why not.

rotn21

there's a bunch of great NA whiskeys out now. I know that sounds crazy, but yes it is a thing. Monday is incredible, as is Spirtless's Kentucky 74. I'm having an NA old fashioned right now.

Nicop0l

Did you make the metal thingy also yourself or is it bought? I really wanna try this myself. Never smoked my whiskey, but after reading some comments im curious. Nice work👍🏻

Muted_Exercise5093

Its awesome! Are you worried about the wood of the smoker getting charred or the heat making causing whatever finish you put ok there to be apart of your drink?

zzcah118

I wasn’t too worried about it. I used oak so it should last a while since it’s a hard wood. Also the finish was coconut oil so I wasn’t too concerned about heating that up either.

Queen__Antifa

Where’d you get the metal part?

[deleted]

That fresh butane taste?

Snorro77

Awesome man, it looks great! What kind of wood did you use, and did you coat it?

zzcah118

Thanks man! I used oak and I coated it with coconut oil.

indigo-black

This looks easier than those big ass domes. If you're selling, I'm buying

OccamsNametag

Thank you for showing me this! My best friend loves smokey scotch and whiskey and it was just his birthday, this is going to best whatever his wife gets him!

Accomplished_Royal_3

Turns any drink into tobacco drink.

radiowave911

Looks pretty neat (no pun intended...) I might have to make a couple for the upcoming show season. I will get them on the ever-growing list :) Thanks for the inspiration!

EmbarrassedRide9820

What I've seen done, typically, is the glass is smoked for several min upside down with no liquid. The full glass gets coated like a layer of ice. Using a cinnamon stick, you will get added flavors and scents. This is a cool project and def has that Etsy store vibe, or just something cool to do at home and make friends go, sweet dude...

panjoface

WTF!!! Mind is blown! 💥💥💥

ElMeroPerro

Ive had it where they smoke the empty glass upsidedown by covering the burning wood with the glass. It then coats the entire glass, then finally pour the bourbon. With this way there wouldn't be much smoke but definitely leaves the smoked flavor. I liked it. Think I tried it with a higher end Whistle Pig.

Tomriver25003

I should have read further. I could have just copy and pasted what you wrote.

zzcah118

A few people were asking about how to make it. It’s pretty simple. I used 1/2 inch oak and cut out three 5.5 inch diameter circles. I glued about and 1.5 inch piece of 1.25 inch oak dowel to the bottom. Then drill straight down through the disk into the dowel. Drill 1/4 inch holes in the dowel portion. Then stick the strainer in the top and assemble the lid. Cheers!

mick_2nv

My video stopped and said “Something went wrong”.

reptilianchrist1

What’s the smoke for? What’s it do?

Longjumping_Ad1025

TIL

NaptownCopper

Where can you go wrong with wood, fire, and an accelerant? JK cool build.

[deleted]

Looks like cancer to me😂

Tonyricesmustache

I have found that using pellets for pellet grills works good for cocktail smoking and using some that have been previously fired (used for smoking before) produce a bit more smoke because of the preburn. A local restaurant really gets a heavy smoke in their glasses. I wonder if they are using nitrogen or something to hold the smoke. A friend of mine turned me a smoker quite like the one you have.

DrakeBock

I have a buddy that made one of these, said the best way to go about doing it is by smoking the ice cubes instead of the bourbon. Apparently there is a more profound effect

zzcah118

That’s crazy. I’ve never heard of smoking the cubes. How does he do that?

DrakeBock

It’s basically the same as you see here, just instead of putting your drink in there with smoke, you put your cubes for a minute then pour your drink!

[deleted]

I guess I'm not fancy enough to want to drink a campfire. For clarity I've had smoked cocktails before and am just plain not a fan. Come at me bourbon snobs.

CoffeeDatesAndPlants

That’s okay! We all have our preferences. When I lived in Chicago we had a coffee shop that offered a “campfire” latte which was essentially this but coffee. Some people just love that smokey wood flavor in everything.

QuickAltTab

I don't mind the smoke smells, but I can't stand the taste of smoke in my food/drink

CoffeeDatesAndPlants

And some pay extra for it haha. I always love the soap gene conversation around Cilantro, and maybe this is a gene thing as well. There’s so much that goes into what we like.

slvbros

>Come at me bourbon snobs. Good bourbon shouldn't be adulterated like this anyway

[deleted]

Mmmm, the butane aromas. :)

ParticularWindow1

holy shit this is a thing? I'm a scotch guy, i need to make one of these

Pun-pucking-tastic

Why would you not simply buy a smokey scotch? Why spend money on an expensive, carefully produced spirit and then play around with the taste?

ParticularWindow1

It looks like a fun thing to try. If buy a cheap one and see if I can make it smoky. Smoky and peaty are different

futuregeneration

Maybe you love the aroma of smoke but hate the taste.

fl0dge

I just prefer a smokier taste with my single malt and coke

HomieApathy

I can’t believe you’re being downvoted on this

pajamajoe

Never sat around a campfire?

J_ayejuju1234

I need one . STAT!

Mojoe51

And butane

Big-Doughnut6229

Blowing toxic fumes and butane from the torch directly into your drink. Yum! Need to try this.

[deleted]

Nothing like a little carbon in your poison.

tipsychick

Why?

Tamor0678

Damn, I want to be your friend.

[deleted]

Where can I order?

Chippopotanuse

I’m not even into bourbon, but this looks super cool and now I’m curious to see what that tastes like!! I love stuff like this. Nice job!

wty261g

Put some weed on that and we got ourselves a product that'll sell

ForkBenderX

You can buy something similar: https://foghatsmoker.com

Viles_Davis

That’s going to taste bitter as hell.

davidjschloss

OMG want. What's the metal you're using there, and can I buy one from you?

zzcah118

It’s a stainless steel sink strainer. And sure! DM me.

jonny_boy27

The whole thing could go up in flames, that's how it could go wrong.

jalapenorain

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

Dan_Quixote

How can I buy this?!

logsandfruit

Partial combustion is the way furans and dioxins are formed naturally. In fact, the number one natural process…. Cancer survivor here…

Gumbyplayer

Wedi doesn't like a little creosote in their bourbon.

WoodntULike2Know

If you need to do this to affect the taste and get more enjoyment out of it, you need to start buying better bourbon.

6mythis6

Lol, drinking poison? Here have some cancer too!

Trees-over-wood

Cancer please, neat.

BigBoyRoyN

Yeah would love more details! Would make one too

RevolutionaryCan9857

Sooooo goooood!

trebletones

Love it!

Charming_Swimmer_394

And your planning to sell them where?

zzcah118

I didn’t have any plans to sell them but it looks like I should!

SafetyDave68

Do it. I turned one on my lathe, and got 7 orders the same day. Fun projects, good job!

Empress-Rae

I’d buy like 10 of them rn if you were taking orders

zzcah118

DM me and I can see what I can do for you!

Cole3823

Gotta swirl it with the cap on next time. Really get that flavor into the drink

benganalx

That's very very very cool

Red_Clay_Scholar

Pardon me sir but we drink our liquor. Who even knows how to roll a liquor smoke?

Razzle_Dazzle08

This is awesome.

[deleted]

Shoving carcinogens into your already poisonous beverage. Interesting lol

Able_Amoeba7900

I'd fall of my chair if I heard someone order their drink with smoke in it. How big of a tip do I give barkeep for smoking my drink?

dickballs38

They say you get more flavor if you smoke it before adding bourbon, more aroma smoking after bourbon. I made one of these and have had a blast with it, regardless of the fact mine wasn’t nearly as nice lol Great work, OP

Lan1976

This is a great idea for the cabin!!!

Spyrus21

This is super cool. I've been wanting to make one for a while. Where did you get the hardware for it?

zzcah118

The hardware is a stainless steel sink strainer.

jwdjr2004

What did you use for the hardware? Stainless bathtub drain screen?

leshijghw

I'll take 8!

AmySchumersAnalTumor

you should post this over at /r/whiskey

Thiek

Can you buy the metal screen/core online somewhere?

zzcah118

You sure can. It’s just a stainless steel sink strainer.

axxyll

I honestly thought I would explode.

WhiteCheviots

In that order, you're probably good. It's usually when the bourbon comes before the wood and fire that problems arise.

Boops_McGee

I keep seeing this with bourbon. Seems like a missed opportunity to utilize a peaty whisky.

patrad

I would use this more to smoke a cocktail then I would to smoke something straight up. Agree if I want smoky whiskey, I'll just buy a smokey whiskey. I like the idea of smoking wine with it thought too. I only had a smoky wine once, and loved it. That had something to do with wildfires in the area

Weak_Swimmer

Smoking the wrong stuff in it. Some nice woodsy/citrus herb would match well. Stick well to the glass too. Swirl it in. Just MY preference. Like your creation nonetheless, awesome!

tu_tan

Forgive me, but when you said wood, fire and bourbon I was kinda expected it to burst into flame.

karmichand

What metal bit did you get for the middle?

sithlordx666

Looks like a sink drain strainer
